On Sunday, July 5th, the New Black Panther Party, along with other organizations and activists are hosting what they are calling ‘500 Strong’!

This is an effort to continue to build a local grassroots movement around peace and justice and the scourge of street violence. Initiated and organized by Divine Allah, the Party’s national youth minister and candidate for the north ward city council seat, the effort takes on a new urgency in the wake of the tragic and senseless killing of young Tamrah Leonard.

Leonard, a bright and most beloved junior high school, was killed in a driveby at a block party organized by Allah and others on June 7th.

Participants will assemble at 12 noon at Martin Luther King Blvd. and Rosselle Ave. in Trenton, the site of Leonard’s tragic death. The event, a daylong event, will begin with a moment of silence for Leonard.

The call includes a demand that local media print more stories surrounding united efforts such as these and a contract for the participants.

“The call was was born out of the overwhelming calls of support for us to continue our efforts in stopping the violence, and bringing unity to the community,” explained Allah.

HANDS OFF ASSATA! HONORING OUR OWN HEROES!

On Wednesday, July 15th, the New Black Panther Party’s Hands Off Assata Campaign will host a birthday teach-in on exiled freedom fighter Assata Shakur and a lifetime commitment tribute to Black Panther elder MA Smith. Both share July 16th birthdays. Elder Smith will observe his 75th birthday.

This special event will take place at Waset Kommuniversity, 271 So 9th Street, Newark at 6:30pm.

Shakur’s case was in the news recently as the Obama Administration modified historic travel restrictions to Cuba several weeks ago.

The NJ Attorney General requested that the Obama Administration make Shakur’s return to NJ be a necessary prerequisite for any modifications of relations with Cuba. Her supporters have instead called for the freedom of The Cuban 5, five Cuban intelligent officers who were sent to prison in America after alerting American intelligence circles of pending U.S.-based terrorist attacks against Cuba, and that the government convene national hearings on COINTELPRO, the FBI’s covert war on the Black Liberation Movement that forced many activists like Shakur to go underground and railroaded many into prison. This call also includes a demand that all COINTELPRO targets still incarcerated, most of whom had ties to the Black Panther Party, be released immediately in the interests of justice.

“Congress exposed COINTELPRO years ago during the paranoia in those circles set in motion by the corruption of the Nixon administration,” explained Zayid Muhammad, a longtime supporter of Shakur. “They outlawed the operations, but they left its targets to languish in prison. So now we political prisoners who have been wrongly incarcerated from anywhere from 30 to nearly 40 years with no legal relief in sight for any of them.”

MA Smith is an extraordinary veteran of these battles. Not only did he survive combat in both Korea and Vietnam, he survived what former Panther leader and political prisoner Dhoruba Bin Wahad called “the war against Black revolutionaries,” his reference to COINTELPROs particular attack on the Black Panther Party. From 1967, when he joined the Party on up until this very day. Smith, affectionately known as ‘Smitty’ to his comrades has been an important grounding influence on activists of all stripes.

He will be feted by his comrades from the Party and from younger activists who also cite him as an important influence.

Organizers are calling for a march in Newark in solidarity with Shakur and her codefendent Sundiata Acoli in November on the 40th anniversary of Black Solidarity Day, the day Shakur was liberated from a New Jersey prison in 1979. Acoli, now 72, has been imprisoned for the Turnpike Incident since 1973.

Admission to this gathering is free, but there will be a donation taken for the elder.

ZULU RETURNS TO NEW YORK!

On Saturday, July 18th and on Sunday, July 19th, the New York Organizing Committee of the National Black Power Conference Movement and the Harlem chapter of the New Black Panther Party will present what they are proudly calling the 1st Annual RB & G Love Peace and Unity Weekend!

This will take place in Harlem at PS 76, 220 West 121st Street, between Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. and Frederick Douglass Blvd., from 12 noon to 6pm on both days.

On the heels of the National Black Power Conference, this weekend will include two days of workshops around local issues. The theme of the first day’s workshops is ‘Reclaiming Our Community & Saving Our Youth.’

The second day will be highlighted by young scholar, Dr. Wesley Muhammad, better known as ‘True Islam,’ who will do a presentation on ‘The Afrikan Origins of Islam.’ Dr. Muhammad received a lot of attention at the recent National Black Power Conference in Atlanta after making a similar presentation.

The Party’s national chairman, and principal convener of the Atlanta Convention, ‘Attorney at War’ Malik Zulu Shabazz, will make a special keynote after Muhammad’s presentation. His theme ‘A Message To Black Leadership.’

“On the heels of the historical Black Power Conference in Atlanta, the call for unity has been ringing all over the U.S. and abroad,” Shaka Shakur, one of the principal organizers for the weekend.

Organizers are laying the groundwork for a National Black Power Convention in Harlem in October.

NATIONAL RALLY AGAINST HATE CRIMES IN TEXAS!

On Tuesday, noon, July 21st, Black Power forces in the south will unite to rally against hate crimes in Paris Texas, the site of the recent lynching of Brandon McClellan.

This rally comes on the heels of the special prosecutor on the case dropping charges on the two principal subjects, Shannon Finley and Charles Crostley.

McClellan was lynched on September 16th. He was killed in the same fashion that James Byrd was lynched in Jasper, Texas in 1998. He was abducted by several white men in a pickup truck, chained to the back of the truck and dragged for miles until his death.

“Let us be clear, that while our people and many here and around the world rejoiced in the election of Barack Obama to the presidency, there are many who are violently angry about that achievement. There has been a rise of hate crimes all over the country, and as this case illustrates, the government, or certainly many in government, may lack the proper will to check these racists at the door,” said Zayid Muhammad, the party’s national minister of culture.

“That is why being organized to defend ourselves is absolutely necessary. That is why a new Black Power movement is absolutely necessary, all due respect to those who naively think our struggle is now over,” he finished.

Organizations initiating this united rally include the New Black Panther Party, the Nation Of Islam, the Tarrant County Local Organizing Committee among others.

The rally will take place at noon at the Lamar County Courthouse, 119 No. Main in Paris, Texas.
