Iraqis rejoice as U.S. troops leave Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – U.S. troops pulled out of Baghdad on Monday, triggering jubilation among Iraqis hopeful that foreign military occupation is ending six years after the invasion to depose Saddam Hussein.

Iraqi soldiers paraded through the streets in their American-made vehicles draped with Iraqi flags and flowers, chanting, dancing and calling the pullout a "victory."

One drove a motorcycle with party streamers on it; another, a Humvee with a garland of plastic roses on the grill.

U.S. combat troops must pull out of Iraq's urban centers by midnight on Tuesday under a bilateral security pact that also requires all troops to leave the country by 2012.

All had left the capital by Monday afternoon, Major-General in Staff, Abboud Qanbar, head of Iraqi security forces in Baghdad, told Reuters.

Another Iraqi official who would not be named said some units in cities outside Baghdad would leave at the last minute. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said 30 bases remained to be handed over. There are still some 130,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

Addressing military leaders in Baghdad, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said: "Our sovereignty has started and ... we should move forward to build a modern state and enjoy (the) security which has been achieved."

Many Iraqis were elated even though they feared militants might use the withdrawal as an opportunity to step up attacks.

"The American forces' withdrawal is something awaited by every Iraqi: male, female, young and old. I consider June 30 to be like a wedding," said Ahmed Hameed, 38, near an ice cream bar in Baghdad's upmarket Karrada district.

"This is proof Iraqis are capable of controlling security inside Iraq," added the recent returnee from exile in Egypt.

The government has declared June 30 a national holiday, "National Sovereignty Day."

"BIG JOY"

A spate of bombings in recent days, including two of the deadliest for more than a year that killed 150 people between them, have raised fears militants will try to step up the pace of attacks.

Yet few Iraqis see that as reason for the Americans to stay.

"It is a big joy to see them leaving," said Abu Hassan, 60, a shop owner. "There might be some more attacks because of struggles between the different parties, but Iraqis are controlling security now. It's up to our forces now."

At a ceremony outside central Baghdad's old defense ministry building, the last Baghdad location to be handed over by U.S. forces, a military band played while soldiers and army college students paraded through a square festooned with Iraqi flags.

"Baghdad is safe, Iraq is safe. We are moving to sovereignty in secure steps," Qanbar said at the ceremony, which unusually was not cordoned off, despite the presence of the commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, Major-General Daniel Bolger.

U.S. troops will remain at two giant bases near Baghdad airport that are defined as non-urban, in case the Iraqis need to draw on their firepower.

"They'll ask us for help whenever they need something but they've got a lot of capability. This is their country. It only makes sense they should secure their own cities," Bolger said.

Ultimately, Iraq's future depends not on U.S. firepower but on efforts to reconcile fractious ethnic and sectarian groups.

In an interview with Reuters on Monday, the new U.S. ambassador to Iraq Chris Hill said the U.S. did not seek a long term military presence in Iraq, contrary to the fears of some Iraqi political groups, only a long term diplomatic presence.

"But at the end of the day the Iraqis are going to have to work out the political problems themselves," he said.

More than six years of U.S. occupation and the orgy of sectarian violence it unleashed have left most Iraqis feeling at best ambivalent about U.S. forces.

Many complain their lives have improved little since then, with daily struggles caused by power cuts and water shortages.

"They did a good job getting rid of that tyrant, Saddam, and we thank them for that, but it's really time for them to leave," said Talib Rasheed, 70, sitting outside in one of Baghdad's leafier suburbs. "Maybe they could leave us some electricity?"

Well Jay meddled with MTV in '04 when he prevented Sean Paul (ni99a was watching from his seat!!!!!!) from performing with Bey, so its possible he prevented Breezy from taking his shine (the DOA video premiered immediately after the awards ceremony). Jay is literally a dictator right now (too much money and power). He sets the trends and destroys them.

I think CB would have been the best person to honour MJ after his VMA performance last year. No one does it better than CB right now in R&B.

I think because of the rescheduling of the awards, the quality was poor. Jamie did his thing though.

As the NBA draft approached, the grim truth about Yao Ming’s(notes) broken left foot hung like an anvil over the Houston Rockets. The fear isn’t that he’s just lost for next season, but longer.

The Rockets and Yao’s reps are frightened over his future, and the concern is the most base of all: Does Yao Ming ever play again?

“The realization has hit them that this is grave,” one NBA general manager said.

For now, the Rockets have privately told league peers it could be a full season before Yao might be able to return to basketball. Multiple league executives, officials close to Yao and two doctors with knowledge of the diagnoses are describing a troubling re-fracture of his navicular bone. Three pins were inserted a year ago, but the foot cracked in the playoffs and isn’t healing.

“It sounds like he’s missing most of next season, if not the entire 82 games,” one league executive who has had recent discussions with the Houston front office told Yahoo! Sports. “That’s all that [the Rockets] will concede quietly, but they know it’s probably much worse.”

Houston general manager Daryl Morey refused comment on Monday and a team spokesman said the Rockets will not have further comment until Yao undergoes additional medical tests.

There’s no reason for the Rockets to disclose the severity of the injury, nor the uncertainty over Yao’s future. Before the Rockets go public with a dire diagnosis, they plan to send him to three more specialists this week, a source said. For now, the Rockets have season tickets and sponsorships to sell. For now, the Rockets will publicly decry these doomsday revelations as premature, but this is the reality that they’re working under within the organization.

This has turned into an impossible situation for the Rockets’ capable GM. Even if Yao plays again, Morey knows it’s just a matter of time until his lower body breaks down. His feet and ankles just can’t support the mobility of his 7-foot-6 frame.

With four surgeries in three years, the Rockets worried they were reaching a breaking point. Well, it’s here. After missing 86 games in the previous three seasons, the 28-year-old Yao missed a mere five this past regular season before injuring his foot during the Rockets’ second-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

It wasn’t until last week when Houston issued a statement saying Yao’s fractured foot hadn’t healed properly, that he would be unavailable “indefinitely.” Prior to Thursday’s draft, Morey tried desperately to trade into the high lottery to take Spanish prodigy Ricky Rubio(notes). Houston needed a young star, but had too few assets to make a deal with Memphis or Sacramento. It seemed odd to teams that Houston had thrown Shane Battier(notes) and Aaron Brooks(notes) into offers within weeks of pushing the NBA champion Lakers to seven games in the Western Conference semifinals.

Now, the Rockets have tough decisions to make: Do they keep pushing Tracy McGrady(notes) and his expiring contract on the market or let the $22 million expire next summer? So far, Morey is getting offered bad contracts and junk talent for him. What’s more, does Houston re-sign Ron Artest(notes) to a $40 million-plus contract when contention is no longer viable? Why not create cap space for the summers of 2010 and 2011? Why not get younger now? Yao could opt out of his contract next summer, but odds are that Houston won’t be so fortunate.

The Rockets should do themselves a favor and just start over. That isn’t easy in a sophisticated and rabid NBA market like Houston, but what everyone long suspected has reached fruition: Yao and McGrady are no longer a faulty foundation, but a collapsed one. Houston needs to proceed with an understanding that they’re no longer chasing the Lakers, but beginning again.

Rest assured, Houston has long been fearful that Yao’s responsibilities to the Chinese national team were rapidly contributing to his breakdown, and perhaps they’ve finally been met. Yao wouldn’t have missed the Beijing Olympics for the world, but it was clear he wasn’t fully healed in those Games. The Rockets paid a price for his nationalism, his obligation and now the darkest fears are close to confirmation: It isn’t just a season on the brink for Yao Ming, but perhaps a career.

-I agree, I like Lil Wayne's music and all but that performance was out of place and frankly just plain terrible. How the @#$% you're going to drop the N-word on BET?

-Beyonce is STOOPID fine, has a beautiful voice, KILLED that purple skirt she had on, but her performance (and that tooth fairy outfit) was kinda disappointing. I'll give her a mulligan on that one though.

-Jamie Foxx, as much as I like dude, was at times annoying last night and lack class at times in making jokes about about MJ but did okay

- I'm not big enough to do it, but Ving Rhames needs his azz whooped for that ignorant "Baby Boy" display

- I already had respect for his talents, but it went up a notch after Neo's "Lady in My Life" performance

- Alicia Keys is unbelievable beautiful inside AND out. Glad to see her representing INTELLIGENT black women the way she does

- The Ojays still got it...Aaron Hall does not.

- I'll be so glad when Souljha Boy's career ends...I can NOT call what he (and Hurricane Chris) does talent no matter how many records they sell

i lost some respect for tmac. i know you cant control injuries but even when healthy he dont inspire much confidence.

1 thing i can say about yao is i know when he's not hurt, the effort is always there. i feel bad for him. this s'posed to be his prime right now but he catchin all the bad breaks and setbacks.

he gon go out like arvydas sabonis. international basketball legend but only a mediocre nba career. i thought he would get at least 1 ring but now im not so sure.

they took us to Tommy T's, its a comedy club n steakhouse out here.

im sure most folks from the Bay been b4. but im late, never have. its a small venue, real intimate. it was nice.

the comedian was Cheryl Underwood. we was so close she was talkin to us n shit.

that shit was hella fun. n she a damn fool talkin bout givin my colleague head n shit. wow.

The Arabs and Turkmen of Kirkuk fear the Kurds will seize control of the northern oil hub after the US pullout from Iraqi urban areas unless their power in the security services is curbed.

"The Arabs of Kirkuk fear that the province's security services who work for political parties will take control of the city after American forces withdraw," said Mohammad Khalil al-Juburi, head of the city's "Arab Bloc."

He was referring to the 8,000 "asaysh," or security personnel, who are linked to the main Kurdish parties and dominant in several districts of the city of 550,000 residents.

"Even if the situation is stable today from the point of view of security, there is no equitable participation (by the different Kirkuk communities) in this sector, and that's what worries us," Juburi told AFP.

He said that Arab residents wanted the US military, before its pullout due to be completed on Tuesday, to cut back the Kurdish participation and allow for a fairer shareout of responsibility for security duties.

Rich in black gold, the Kirkuk province of some 900,000 people is a microcosm of Iraq's problems.

It has several communities vying for power: the Kurds who want to attach Kirkuk to Iraqi Kurdistan, the Turkmen with historical claims to the area, Christians and Arabs, many of whom were settled in the province under ousted dictator Saddam Hussein's policy of Arabisation.

On June 24, Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region approved a new constitution in which it formally laid claim to Kirkuk province.

The province's Turkmen advisor, Turkan Shukur Ayoub, wants the Iraqi government "to reinforce the army in Kirkuk after the US pullout because the police is weak and lacks equipment".

"We hope they will listen and send extra troops," he said.

According to the security services, Kirkuk has 11,500 policemen, with 35 percent of them Arabs, the same percentage Kurds, 28 percent Turkmen, and the remainder Christians.

The province's 12,000 troops are concentrated outside of the city, a military commander said.

Ahmad al-Askari, a Kurdish advisor for the province, has no qualms about security responsibilities. "The Kirkuk police, made up of Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen and Christians, is capable of taking care of security," he said.

"And there are dozens of Arab officers in the force."

Fellow Kurdish advisor Azad Jbari argued that "members of the asaysh must be involved in security because they have the competence and know how to fight terrorism."

Despite the deep ethnic rifts which have delayed the holding of provincial elections in Kirkuk, both the Iraqi and US militaries have been putting on a brave face.

"We are all set (for the withdrawal) and, if the need arises, we can call on support from US forces," said General Abdul Reza al-Zaidi, the Iraqi army commander for Kirkuk.

The US army says Iraqi forces have made the necessary improvements in recent monhts to be ready for the US pullback from urban areas, as agreed by the two governments last November.

Wyclef Jean has entered the dismal political reality of Haiti, a direct result of Bush administration policy in overthrowing a democratically elected government, by echoing the U.S.-installed government's position recently that ousted president Jean-Bertrand-Aristide is responsible for the latest round of violence. Wyclef is quoted in Reuters, "Those guys really believe in Jean-Bertrand Aristide. They are not going to stop unless Aristide says the word".

TRANSLATED: Aristide is behind the violence and all he has to do is give the word and the violence would end tomorrow.

Peacemaker?

With all the aura of a superstar aside, Wyclef's assertions that he can now play the role of "peacemaker" in Haiti might conjure illusions of a Nobel Peace prize in his mind but it does little to match the current reality on the ground. If he really wanted to bring to peace to Haiti he would start by checking the unlicensed hatred his own family bears towards the majority political party of the ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Actually, he was quite lucky that Lavalas militants did not remember his own statements before he recently entered the pro-Aristide slum for a photo opportunity. Many in Lavalas promise this won't happen again.

Family Ties

Wyclef's uncle is Raymond Joseph, the highest-ranking official abroad representing the U.S.-installed government in Haiti. He is the un-elected government's representative in Washington. Wyclef's uncle, who he has often praised, is responsible for fomenting outrageous lies about Aristide and members the Lavalas political party that has contributed to the current climate of witch-hunts, arbitrary arrests and murders in Haiti today. Wyclef's uncle is also the co-publisher of Haiti Observateur, a right-wing rag that has been an apologist for the killers in the Haitian military going back as far as the brutal coup against Aristide in 1991.

On October 26th Haitan police entered the pro-Aristide slum of Fort Nationale and summarily executed 13 young men. Wyclef said nothing. On October 28th the Haitian police executed five young men, babies really, in the pro-Aristide slum of Bel Air. Wyclef said nothing. If Wyclef really wants to be part of Haiti's political dialogue he would acknowledge these facts. Unfortunately, Wyclef is fronting. There is nothing substantial in his offer until he proves otherwise. HIP wishes Wyclef the best for his next concert in Haiti. We all want peace in Haiti. Most of us want peace with justice.

@ the BET awards, it was....ehhh. but the thing everybody gotta remember is everything got crazy cause of the whole thing with MJ. so you kinda have to accept how it went because it wasnt the worst awards show any of us ever seen. with that said i aint about to deny there were some "wtf moments". like the baby boy scene, it was cool when tyrese came out, as for ving rhames dude shouldve just sat out on this one.

@ the soulja boy performance...ehhh. soon as he hopped out the bed i was just waiting for him to bust his ass. cause ya'll know like i do that wouldve made the show lol.

@ tiny--yeah shes ghetto but what can u do. on the positive side at least u know she still the same person from when she didnt have tip.

@ bey--wtf @ the performance. she looked good dont get me wrong but it made me change the channel. also i heard alotta hate going on when she won....c'mon ya'll. like ya'll remember how big single ladies and that diva song was when they came out. how many females was using those songs for they anthem? lol.

@ wayne & drake--......next (with all them young ass little girls on stage with them lol).

@ keri--thick and fine as hell. she did her thing too. @ the constant cussing--i agree @ whoever was in charge of bleeping them out needs they ass fired lol but they were funny especially when the ojays was giving their speech.

@ mary mary-- that was crazy hot. they killed that.

@ jay--say what ya'll want but he shut shit down with his performance. he didnt have to go all out and do something different. dude kept it simple and still had that arena hyped up. though he didnt do no MJ tribute but he did say r.i.p to king. Ne-yo forgot to do it after his performance and had to do it when he won the award. did ya'll expect him to sing a MJ song or do a dance (no cause that wouldve been on Ill's epic fail the next day lol).

and @ this chris brown thing-- ya'll right by saying he shouldnt have the power to do something like that and it is fucked up if he did do it. now put yourself in his position lol. this kid just whooped your artists/ side girls (cause as fine as rhianna is you know jays tearing that up) ass. knowing you had the power to do something like that would you do it too or something worse. dont lie and say ya'll would ignore that shit cause some of ya'll cant be in the same club with ya enemies without starting some shit...especially you females lol. on top of that what do ya'll think wouldve happened soon as he got on stage. someone from the crowd wouldve snatched him up and whooped that ass cause not everyones ready to forgive him yet

@ jamie and ne-yo--the held it down like no other. yes i said ne-yo cause how many times did ya'll see him out there? AND JAMIE MOONWALKING IN THE BEGINNING!! i def thought he was gonna fuck that one up lol but he did his thing.

and to close it all up with janet was beautiful. it was sad but it was the right way to go out. and SMH @ joe looking like a mississippi pimp smiling in front of the cameras and shit like nothing ever happened

This cat, Dr. Murray or what not, was supposedly a friend. I guess Mike met him in Vegas in 2006 or some shit. He apparently treated one of Mike's kids there or something. But of course, that only last a month and 25 days. He got a "shady" past, and now he lookin hella sus with this situation...

And then they finally call it at the hospital...

But they say Mike was really dead at like 12:30 or 1:00 or something...

That's why I always tell people to never go to bed MAD...especially with FAMILY or LOVED ONES (friends, significant other, etc...)...

Because you don't know...that time you speak with just might be your last.

One day, it definitely will be...for you, or for them, and you want to leave a positive lasting impression.

I saw a Janet Jackson interview from the 90's the other day...Oprah asked her when was the last time she had spoken to her brother, and she said 2 yrs!

I was like WTF!?

She had called him twice, but he was on a world tour at the time, and his number kept changing. She left messages, but he never called back.

Of course, they talked eventually, but imagine if something happened!? I'm trying to get ahold of my bro and sis I haven't seen in 19 yrs right now...we just found each other last year on MySpace (different Moms)...

But, yeah, even when I argue with my Mom, I always call back and say I Love You...cuz you never know...

as for jay "blocking" chris brown, to be honest, he may have helped cb. coming off all the heat with ri-ri and the court case, it's not a good look to try and repair your rep on mike's death. it would've looked a lil bit insensitive on his part. like trying to sneak in the backdoor, and take away the focus from mike. the majority of media and many fans would've felt that wasnt the proper place for hit "debut".

and lastly, i expect the proper tribute and end-all,be-all performance tribute to be at the 2010 grammys. that way you could include people currently on tour(usher), people currently in poor media light(cb), and preparation time for other acts to polish up their acts for the show in february/march. you have to know the grammys are being prepared now, and it will be show WORLDWIDE so every mike fan could see the tribute. sorry to say but mtv and bet just arent doing it that big worldwide. and before anyone says, "but wait, mtv is all over", that is true. but its not the american mtv. they show their own programming and award shows. and the grammys hit many many more countries. like the ones that mike frequented.

On the subject of us leaving Baghdad I must say that i'm torn...I'm happy because this means my husband, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, cousin, and countless friends won't have to go back over there, at least not for 12 months at a time.
