Red Summer of 1919

Red Summer, coined by author James Weldon Johnson, is used to describe the bloody race riots that occurred during the summer and autumn of 1919. Race riots erupted in several cities in both the North and South of the United States. The three with the highest number of fatalities happened in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Elaine, Arkansas

According to a period analysis of the events, there were 26 separate riots in communities and cities across the United States where blacks were the victims of physical attacks.[1]

The riots were sparked by postwar tensions of racism, unemployment, inflation, and violence by radical political groups. In 1919 it was estimated that 500,000 African Americans had emigrated from the South to the North and Midwest industrial cities for work during the period bookmarked by World War I.[2] During the war, African-American workers filled many jobs left empty by whites who had joined the military, or new ones created by the war mobilization. In some cities, they were hired as strikebreakers, especially during strikes of 1917. Some disaffected black workers joined radical political organizations such as the African Blood Brotherhood or the Communist party, which targeted blacks for recruitment. All of these actions increased resentment and suspicion among whites, especially the working class. Following the war, rapid demobilization and a lack of price controls led to inflation and unemployment. The resulting competition for jobs between whites and blacks was fierce. European-American workers resented displacement by less expensive laborers, including the many new African-Americans added to the rapidly growing cities.

The unrest was intensified by anxieties about changing attitudes brought by recent European immigrants, some of whom were members of radical political or labor organizations, including communists, the I.W.W., and anarchists such as Luigi Galleani, who openly advocated the violent overthrow of the government and 'propaganda by the deed'. This was the time of the Red Scare, after the Russian Revolution and rise of the Bolsheviks. African Americans who were attracted to the idea of an independent African-American government based on Marxist principles, such as Cyril Briggs, those who were attracted to socialism or communism as a political philosopy, such as W.E.B. DuBois, and even those who advocated racial equality, labor rights for African Americans, or the right of self-defense were all branded as radicals or revolutionists. The Jamaican poet Claude McKay, then a Communist, wrote his poem "If We Must Die" in response to the situation.

Unlike earlier race riots in U.S. history, the 1919 riots were among the first where there was an organized black resistance to the white attacks, in part due to the rise of the "armed resistance" movement led by the African Blood Brotherhood. The Elaine, Arkansas riot was less typical of others; it took place in the rural South and violence was directed not against black industrial workers, but agricultural sharecroppers.

Red Scare 1919

Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer Makes
“The Case against the Reds”

The climate of repression established in the name of wartime security during World War I continued after the war as the U.S. government focused on communists, Bolsheviks, and “reds.” This anticommunist crusade climaxed during the “Palmer raids” of 1919–1921, when Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer’s men, striking without warning and without warrants, smashed union offices and the headquarters of Communist and Socialist organizations. Palmer believed that communism was “eating its way into the homes of the American workman.” Palmer charged in this 1920 essay that communism was an imminent threat and explained why Bolsheviks had to be deported.

In 1919 Woodrow Wilson appointed A. Mitchell Palmer as his attorney general.

Worried by the revolution that had taken place in Russia, Palmer became convinced that Communist agents were planning to overthrow the American government. Palmer recruited John Edgar Hoover as his special assistant and together they used the Espionage Act (1917) and the Sedition Act (1918) to launch a campaign against radicals and left-wing organizations.

7th November, 1919, the second anniversary of the Russian Revolution, over 10,000 suspected communists and anarchists were arrested. Palmer and Hoover found no evidence of a proposed revolution but large number of these suspects were held without trial for a long time.

In January, 1920, another 6,000 were arrested and held without trial. These raids took place in several cities and became known as the Palmer Raids. Palmer and Hoover found no evidence of a proposed revolution but large number of these suspects, many of them members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), continued to be held without trial. When Palmer announced that the communist revolution was likely to take place on 1st May, mass panic took place. In New York, five elected Socialists were expelled from the legislature.

When the May revolution failed to materialize, attitudes towards Palmer began to change and he was criticised for disregarding people's basic civil liberties. Some of his opponents claimed that Palmer had devised this Red Scare to help him become the Democratic presidential candidate in 1920.

The charges are based on written answers Burge gave in a civil lawsuit against him in 2003, 10 years after he was fired from the department. Burge insisted he never observed nor used any torture techniques - including cattle prods, bags over suspects' heads and a "black box" that administered electric shocks.

The D.C. commissioners, charged by Congress with building the new city under the direction of the president, initially planned to import workers from Europe to meet their labor needs. However, response to recruitment was dismal and soon they turned to African Americans – slave and free – to provide the bulk of labor that built the White House, the United States Capitol, and other early government buildings.
A major concern in the construction of the new public buildings in this remote location was the acquisition of building materials, such as stone, lumber, bricks, hardware, and nails. Black quarrymen, sawyers, brickmakers, and carpenters fashioned raw materials into the products used to erect the White House. Master stonemason, Collen Williamson, trained slaves on the spot at the government’s quarry at Aquia, Virginia. There slaves quarried and cut the rough stone that was later dressed and laid by Scottish stonecutters to erect the walls of the President’s House. Sawyers listed on government payrolls, such as "Jerry", "Jess", "Charles", "Len", "Dick", "Bill" and "Jim" undoubtedly were slaves leased from their masters. Free and slave blacks burnt bricks used to line the stone walls in temporary ricks on the President’s House grounds. Often working seven days a week during the high construction summer months alongside white workers and artisans, black laborers proved vital to the work force that created both the White House and U.S. Capitol.

The White House is a large structure and from its earliest days domestic operations have demanded a general manager. The domestic "offices" and servants’ quarters were located in the rooms of the basement. Kitchen staff, directly under the Entrance Hall, cooked busily all day providing food for servants, staff, and any guests who might be visiting. Jefferson’s style of living was simpler than that of many rich citizens along the eastern seaboard. His one concession to grandeur was to dress his menservants in livery, knee breeches, and gilt or steel-buttoned blue coats with crimson trimmings and lace edging. Although Jefferson wrote his daughter that he preferred white servants so that he could dismiss them when they misbehaved, he did care for his slaves. When a sickly child was born at the President’s House (11 months after Jefferson’s own grandson, James Madison Randolph) to slaves Fanny and Eddy in 1806, he provided for the nursing care of the baby and mother. The guests remembered a simple, cordial evening. The next morning following a news release of the White House guest list, the event sparked the hottest news since the McKinley assassination. Editorials in the South–but not only the South–were harsh in their criticism of Roosevelt. The furor over the dinner–the first time that an African American was entertained at the White House–revealed the structure’s symbolic power and the bigotry then at large in the nation. When John Adams moved into the White House in November 1800, one-third of the capital city’s population was black. Few of these African Americans were free. However, with the end of the African slave trade in 1808 and the depletion of lands and decline of Tidewater tobacco plantations, free African Americans became more common and soon outnumbered the city’s slave population. On the eve of the Civil War, the census recorded that the city of Washington had 9,029 free blacks and 1,774 slaves. Although free blacks outnumbered slave residents, slave sales were still common, and Washington became a flourishing center for trade in slaves bound for the lands opened by the Louisiana Purchase. The slave pens of traders were located near the Mall and at Lafayette Square within sight of the White House. The trade finally was outlawed by the Compromise of 1850 and abolition of slavery in the District came in 1862.

For free blacks in Washington, D.C. life was better than many places below the Mason-Dixon Line. Formal education was easier to acquire (black-established schools dated to 1807), property ownership was possible, and some government jobs (usually messengers and doorkeepers) were open to blacks. Most found work as laborers, servants, barbers, cooks, maids, and gardeners. However, municipal codes placed late night curfews on blacks and required them to register and to carry a certificate of freedom. Without this proof a black could be jailed as a runaway slave. The registration certificate was a precious document as it checked the over-zealous slave traders and kidnappers in the city. Although it was a hard life, free blacks persevered and by the time of the Civil War had established a flourishing African American community.

History of the Nation of Islam

The original Nation of Islam was founded in Detroit in the United States of America in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad. Wallace Fard Muhammad (1877, 1891 or 1893- 1934?), is believed by the NOI to be “the long-awaited Messiah of the Christians and the Mahdi of the Muslims”. [1]

One of Fard's first disciples was Elijah Poole, whose name Fard later changed to Elijah Muhammad (1897-1975). Elijah Muhammad deified Fard by preaching that he was literally God in person.

Elijah Muhammad was born in Georgia, but later moved to Detroit, where he came into contact with Fard Muhammad through his wife Clara Muhammad and accepted his teachings. He eventually traveled the country, setting up mosques, and named them according to his sequence of arrival. In New York to this day, the mosque there is still referred to as Mosque No. 7, because it was the seventh mosque Elijah Muhammad visited. Over time, Elijah Muhammad's followers spread his teachings, from streets and meeting halls to correctional institutions.

One of the Nation of Islam's core beliefs is that the so-called American Negro has been miseducated by public schools with the express intent of preserving a system of white domination. Highly critical of the facilities and quality of education available in the nation's public schools, which were segregated at the time, the NOI established an independent, parochial school in various cities, calling each one the University of Islam. This move led to confrontations with the authorities. In Detroit in 1934, a squad of police officers raided the NOI school and arrested 12 teachers for “contributing to the delinquency of minors.” Because students were not enrolled in a state-accredited school, legally, they were considered truants. According to reports, Nation of Islam members demonstrated for the teachers' release, asserting their support of the NOI private school in front of Detroit Police headquarters. Commenting on the confrontation and the Nation of Islam's decision to set up independent schools, Elijah Muhammad said,

In Detroit, Michigan, where we were first attacked outright by the Police Department in April 1934, we were also unarmed. There were no deaths on the part of the Believers, however. They fought back against the policemen who attacked them for no just cause whatsoever but that they wanted our Muslim children to go to their schools. We refused to let children take their first courses in the public schools, although the high-school children in their upper teens could do so. But let us shape our children first. (Elijah Muhammad, Message to the Blackman in America, Muhammad's Temple No. 2, 1965)
One follower who was to become one of his most well-known adherents was Malcolm Little, later to become known as Malcolm X. While serving a prison sentence for robbery, Malcolm was introduced to the Nation of Islam by his brother Philbert. Upon his release from prison in 1952, Little joined the Nation of Islam and, in the custom of the Nation, became known as Malcolm X. NOI doctrine explains that because in mathematics the X represents an unknown variable; followers use it to represent their lost, unknown African surnames. The followers accept this “X” as a symbol of the rejection of their slave names and the absence of a “proper” Muslim name. Eventually, the “X” is replaced with an Arabic name more descriptive of a person’s personality and character. Eventually, Malcolm X took the name El-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz after rejecting the Nation’s beliefs and accepting traditional Islam.

1955 brought the arrival of future NOI leader Louis Eugene Walcott, later to be known as Louis Farrakhan. A calypso singer and violinist, Walcott first became acquainted with the teachings of Elijah Muhammad after attending the NOI's annual Savior's Day convention in Chicago. Walcott accepted Elijah Muhammad's teachings that day and became Louis X before being renamed Louis Farrakhan by Muhammad years later. After the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965, Farrakhan became imam of Mosque No. 7 and the official spokesman for the Nation. In the wake of a doctrinal schism in the organization after Elijah Muhammad's death ten years later, Farrakhan would become the leading voice of a “purist” faction, which sought to adhere to Muhammad's teachings and the black nationalist dogma.

One day after Elijah Muhammad's death in February 1975, the succession of his son Wallace was approved unanimously during the annual Savior's Day celebrations February 26. Wallace Muhammad was suspended from the NOI for “dissident views” and ideological rifts with his father over religious doctrine, but had been restored to the organization by 1974. [1]

By the time Elijah Muhammad died in 1975, there were 75 Temples across America. [2]

A new NOI: 1978
At the outset of Wallace Muhammad's leadership of the Nation, many members were disturbed at the movement's new, moderate direction; and a minority of them years later formed more doctrinaire splinter groups. The most important of these was Louis Farrakhan, who, in a 1990 interview with Emerge Magazine, expressed his disillusionment with the changes and decided to "quietly walk away" from the organization in 1976, rather than cause a schism among the membership. In 1978, after wrestling with the changes and consequent dismantling of the NOI, Farrakhan and his supporters decided to rebuild the original Nation of Islam upon the foundation established by W. Fard Muhammad and Elijah Muhammad.

In 1979, the Nation of Islam's newspaper, Muhammad Speaks was reestablished by Farrakhan under the name The Final Call.

In 1981, Farrakhan publicly announced the restoration of the Nation of Islam and went forward with Elijah Muhammad's teachings.

In 1988 the resurgent Nation of Islam repurchased its former flagship mosque and headquarters in Chicago and dedicated it as Mosque Maryam, the National Center for the Re-training and Re-education of the Blackman and Woman of America and the World.

In October 1990, a 2,000-member delegation from the United States traveled to Accra, Ghana, for the Nation of Islam's first International Savior’s Day convention on the African continent. Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings officially opened and closed the five-day convention.

In December 1997, the Nation of Islam sponsored a world tour referred to as the World Friendship Tour III. [2] A delegation of Muslim and Christian clergy from America, led by Minister Louis Farrakhan, visited the Caribbean and almost 40 countries as well, including Canada, Mali, South Africa, South Korea, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Russia, Arabia, Libya, Cuba, Egypt, and the Philippines. Using the themes of the Million Man March held two years earlier, Farrakhan declared the mission of the tour to “spread the message of atonement, reconciliation, and responsibility.”

Marking 70 years since the Nation of Islam was founded in America, in 2000 Imam Warith Deen Mohammed and Minister Louis Farrakhan publicly embraced and declared unity and reconciliation at the annual Savior’s Day convention.

In comments to the audience, Imam Warith Deen Mohammed said,

"Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, it is not difficult for Minister Farrakhan and Wallace D. Mohammed to embrace each other. That’s easy for us. When I first met him in the early ’50s, I liked him on first sight, and I became his friend and his brother. And I have not stopped being his friend and his brother. Maybe he has not understood, but I have always been his friend and his brother. For me, this is too big a cause for our personal problems and differences. Allah-u Akbar (God is great). October 23, 2008. NORMANDY, Mo. (AP) — Officials plan to start HIV testing at a suburban St. Louis high school where as many as 50 students may have been exposed to the virus that causes AIDS.

St. Louis County spokesman Craig LeFebvre said Wednesday that the mode of transmission in the scare at Normandy High School could include sexual activity, drug use, piercings or tattoos.

The St. Louis County Health Department said last week that a positive HIV test raised concerns that students at Normandy might have been exposed.

The Health Department is not saying whether the infected person was a student. Testing at the school is beginning this week.

What The Muslims Want

This is the question asked most frequently by both the whites and the blacks. The answers to this question I shall state as simply as possible.

1. We want freedom. We want a full and complete freedom.

2. We want justice. Equal justice under the law. We want justice applied equally to all, regardless of creed or class or color.

3. We want equality of opportunity. We want equal membership in society with the best in civilized society.

4. We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves, to be allowed to establish a separate state or territory of their own--either on this continent or elsewhere. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and minerally rich. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20 to 25 years--until we are able to produce and supply our own needs.

Since we cannot get along with them in peace and equality, after giving them 400 years of our sweat and blood and receiving in return some of the worst treatment human beings have ever experienced, we believe our contributions to this land and the suffering forced upon us by white America, justifies our demand for complete separation in a state or territory of our own.

5. We want freedom for all Believers of Islam now held in federal prisons. We want freedom for all black men and women now under death sentence in innumerable prisons in the North as well as the South. We want every black man and woman to have the freedom to accept or reject being separated from the slave master's children and establish a land of their own.

We know that the above plan for the solution of the black and white conflict is the best and only answer to the problem between two people.

6. We want an immediate end to the police brutality and mob attacks against the so-called Negro throughout the United States. We believe that the Federal government should intercede to see that black men and women tried in white courts receive justice in accordance with the laws of the land--or allow us to build a new nation for ourselves, dedicated to justice, freedom and liberty.

7. As long as we are not allowed to establish a state or territory of our own, we demand not only equal justice under the laws of the United States, but equal employment opportunities--NOW!

We do not believe that after 400 years of free or nearly free labor, sweat and blood, which has helped America become rich and powerful, so many thousands of black people should have to subsist on relief or charity or live in poor houses.

8. We want the government of the United States to exempt our people from ALL taxation as long as we are deprived of equal justice under the laws of the land.

9. We want equal education--but separate schools up to 16 for boys and 18 for girls on the condition that the girls be sent to women's colleges and universities. We want all black children educated, taught and trained by their own teachers. Under such schooling system we believe we will make a better nation of people. The United States government should provide, free, all necessary text books and equipment, schools and college buildings. The Muslim teachers shall be left free to teach and train their people in the way of righteousness, decency and self respect.

10. We believe that intermarriage or race mixing should be prohibited. We want the religion of Islam taught without hindrance or suppression.

7. WE BELIEVE this is the time in history for the separation of the so-called Negroes and the so-called white Americans. We believe the black man should be freed in name as well as in fact. By this we mean that he should be freed from the names imposed upon him by his former slave masters. Names which identified him as being the slave master's slave. We believe that if we are free indeed, we should go in our own people's names--the black people of the Earth.

8. WE BELIEVE in justice for all, whether in God or not; we believe as others, that we are due equal justice as human beings. We believe in equality--as a nation--of equals. We do not believe that we are equal with our slave masters in the status of "freed slaves."

We recognize and respect American citizens as independent peoples and we respect their laws which govern this nation.

9. WE BELIEVE that the offer of integration is hypocritical and is made by those who are trying to deceive the black peoples into believing that their 400-year-old open enemies of freedom, justice and equality are, all of a sudden, their "friends." Furthermore, we believe that such deception is intended to prevent black people from realizing that the time in history has arrived for the separation from the whites of this nation.

If the white people are truthful about their professed friendship toward the so-called Negro, they can prove it by dividing up America with their slaves. We do not believe that America will ever be able to furnish enough jobs for her own millions of unemployed, in addition to jobs for the 20,000,000 black people as well.

10. WE BELIEVE that we who declare ourselves to be righteous Muslims, should not participate in wars which take the lives of humans. We do not believe this nation should force us to take part in such wars, for we have nothing to gain from it unless America agrees to give us the necessary territory wherein we may have something to fight for.

11. WE BELIEVE our women should be respected and protected as the women of other nationalities are respected and protected.

12. WE BELIEVE that Allah (God) appeared in the Person of Master W. Fard Muhammad, July, 1930; the long-awaited "Messiah" of the Christians and the "Mahdi" of the Muslims.

good morning back to ya, but to be honest, i aint let my son's dad see my son for about 5 mths, reason being is because, first off the nigga was not paying child support nor was he coming to see him for about 2 mths straight, no calling nothing..so to me, i was like oh ok, he acting like he aint even got a fuckin son so thats how imma carry it then.. now i know alot of peeps may think that shyt was wrong but my son's dad has a habit of being around when da fuck he wants to be around and paying child support when its convenient for him. Now what i did was more so to teach his wack ass a fuckin lesson..now let me say this, my son is 12 years old, he has his own cell phone so therefore his dad never has to call me directly to speak with his son, so there should be no reason as to why his dad shouldn't call him. By the way, i dont even wanna hear his fuckin voice so he dont need to call me period...ok so why his dad for whatever reason asked me for his son's cell number about 3 fuckin times...like wtf are u retarded...ok, so my son bday come around he called but it was later that night, so he tells my son that he can't get him anything because he is trying to save..like wtf again, ok as if i aint tryna save either...and u know what my son accepted that shyt, but let me say that shyt, he lookin at me like i then tripped fell and bumped my damn head. so anywho, when i took his visitation rights away from him because of his inconsistent behavior as a father, he got his shyt straight. My intentions was never to be one of those chicks that deny a man from seeing his son, but since he was parading around like he aint have a son or gave a fuck about whether his son was eating or had clothes on his back, i had to show him who da fuck he dealing wit, i aint one of these chicks that gonna beg a nigga or stalk a nigga to take care of their own fuckin seed, i aint gonna keep running up to the courts and shyt, because in the end the only person that is really suffering from it, is the child. i mean as a mother imma do my damnest to get and provide for my kids with or without daddy's help. Y stress myself out arguing over shyt that sum mofos just aint gonna get anyway, so therefore i had to teach his ass a fuckin lesson..now that nigga is on time with his payments , he sees his son on a regular for the most part, but as for the callin his son, he still refuse to call him on his cell phone..i be like nigga, stop calling me, call him directly, i dont wanna hear ur fuckin voice..period...sorry for the long ass comment, but i had to explain my actions in regard to ur comment about women playing those types of games...and for real, who really knows what type of games he was playing also. Just sum thing to think about.

St. Louis County spokesman Craig LeFebvre said Wednesday that the mode of transmission in the scare at Normandy High School could include sexual activity, drug use, piercings or tattoos.

The St. Louis County Health Department said last week that a positive HIV test raised concerns that students at Normandy might have been exposed.

The Health Department is not saying whether the infected person was a student. Testing at the school is beginning this week.

I think part of the problem is that schools and parents aren't teaching them. Unfortunately I don't think that is the entire problem. Nowadays, the information is everywhere....t.v., internet, billboards, etc...so the reason of "not knowing about protection" is sounding more like an excuse. The other day, somebody on the I.C. made a thread talking about "When was the last time you went raw dog". You wouldn't believe the number of people admitting to that shit or their reasoning behind it. And, these are people who are in the 21 and up age range. If that was any indication of what's happening on a larger scale, I can't feel sorry for these people.

Greenspan: 'Credit tsunami' to have severe impact

AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told Congress in prepared testimony Thursday that the current global financial crisis is a 'once in a century credit tsunami' that policymakers did not anticipate.

Greenspan was to be the leadoff witness at a House hearing lawmakers called to question past key financial players about what they felt caused the most grave financial crisis since the 1930s. The witnesses were also expected to be asked how they thought the government would deliver the nation from the economic turmoil.

Greenspan was the chairman of the Federal Reserve for 18 1/2 years. In testimony prepared for the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee, he voiced shock over the present turn of events and called conditions deplorable. He said that he and others who believed lending institutions would do a good job of protecting their shareholders are in a "state of shocked disbelief."

And Greenspan also blamed the problems on heavy demand for securities backed by subprime mortgages by investors who did not worry that the boom in home prices might come to a crashing halt.

"Given the financial damage to date, I cannot see how we can avoid a significant rise in layoffs and unemployment," Greenspan said. "Fearful American households are attempting to adjust, as best they can, to a rapid contraction in credit availability, threats to retirement funds and increased job insecurity."

He said that a necessary condition for the crisis to end will be a stabilization in home prices but he said that was not likely to occur for "many months in the future." When home prices finally stabilize, Greenspan added, then "the market freeze should begin to measurably thaw and frightened investors will take tentative steps towards reengagement with risk."

Greenspan said until that occurs the government is correct to move forward aggressively with efforts to support the financial sector. He called the $700 billion rescue package passed by Congress on Oct. 10 "adequate to serve the need" and said that its impact was already being felt in markets.

In his written testimony, Greenspan did not specifically address the criticism he is receiving now as being partly to blame for the current crisis. Greenspan's critics charge that he left interest rates too low in the early part of this decade, spurring an unsustainable housing boom, while also refusing to exercise the Fed's powers to impose greater regulations on the issuance of new types of mortgages, including subprime loans. It was the collapse of these mortgages and rising defaults a year ago that triggered the current crisis.

In his testimony, Greenspan put the blame for the subprime collapse on overeager investors who did not properly take into account the threats that would be posed once home prices stopped surging upward.

"It was the failure to properly price such risky assets that precipitated the crisis," he asserted.

New Panthers On TV Tonite
On Harlem 5 To Obama

On Thursday, October 23rd, the New Black Panther Party will be spotlighted on The Florence Rice Show on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network station.
The show will be aired at 7pm. on Channel 34 in Manhattan. You may also watch it online at mnn.org.
The focus of the show will be the infamous attack on the Harlem Day Parade by the New York City Police.
“We supremely appreciate our elder Florence Rice for having us on.
“Other than Naya Arinde’s story in the Amsterdam News no Black media has seen fit to even address this racist brazen attack on our people by the police, and you wonder why our youth don’t look up to these cowards calling themselves ‘leaders,’” exclaimed an angry Zayid Muhammad, who will be on with Sharif Amenhotep.
The show can also be seen online at www.mnn.com.
On Sunday, October 26th, the Harlem chapter of the New Black Panther Party will begin what it is calling Mind Flix Revolutionary Cinema Showcase with a showing of the insurgent classic ‘The Spook Who Sat By The Door.’
The showing will take place at 12 noon at The National Black Theatre, 5th Ave. at 126th Street in Harlem.
Showings will be every second and last Sunday.
On Wednesday, October 29th, the New Black Panther Party will host an important pre-election screening of the moving documentary American Blackout. The film details how both the 2000 and 2004 national elections were stolen by isolating and discounting Black and Latino votes in Florida and in Ohio respectively, and how outspoken former Atlanta-based congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was “sacked” or “de-elected” through loopholes in the Georgia primary system that many feel violates both the letter and the spirit of the Voters Rights Act. Pathetically, a federal judge upheld the legality of the loophole.
Ironically, McKinney, formerly a lifelong Democrat, has reemerged as the Green Party’s candidate for the Presidency.
Leading up to this election, featuring Barack Obama’ s historic run, several hundred thousand voters have already been purged from voter rolls in Ohio and Florida, the two states who staged the highjacking of the Black vote in 2004 and 2000, as well as in Nevada, Michigan , Colorado and Georgia.
Those purged or having difficulty registering are again predominantly Black and Latino voters who are likely to vote for Obama.
This special showing and teach-in will take place at Waset Kommuniversity at 6:30p.m…
Looking ahead in other matters, on Monday, November 3rd, Black Solidarity Day, the day before the election, the New Black Panther Party is initiating a united march ‘In Defense of The Black Vote,’ with hope of preparing new young voters for possible corruption in this historic election.
Participants will assemble at 11 a.m at Broad and Market and will march to the federal building and then to City Hall steps around noon.
“We are calling on all of our allies to be with us and we are specially calling on our youth organizations to be with us because this really about preparing them to take their place in our struggle as our next line of leadership,” explained Zayid Muhammad.

After hosting a powerful youth and community rally on September 30th in the struggle to prevent an unwanted liquor store from disrupting the community, the Bergen Street coalition which includes the New Black Panther Party, has learned that there will be a hearing on the matter of this controversial business before Newark’s Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Board on Monday, November 17th at 5:30p.m. in Newark City Council chambers, located in Newark City Hall 920 Broad Street.
Rodriguez, the prospective owner will likely be heard first, then representatives from our community will be heard.
This is a very legal technical process.
“It may require more than one hearing,”according to the community’s attorney J.Edward Waller.

The Battle for the Soul of Harlem continues…In addition to continuing developing their support for the Harlem 5, referring to the five men, four of whom were Panthers, who arrested trying to defend the community against the unwarranted and totally unprovoked recent attack on the Harlem African Day Parade by the police just this past September 21st, the Harlem chapter of the New Black Panther Party is continuing its investigation into the scope of police attack. It is believed that perhaps several hundred Harlem youths were harassed and arrested on that day.
“To verify this information , we need to hear from people who witnessed the harassment or who were themselves arrested,” explained Shaka Shakur, chairman of the Party’s Harlem chapter.
Some observers believe that the police used the parade as a pretext for a broad sweep of the neighborhood as well as to demoralize area youth from getting involved.
“Nothing could have been more racist and disrespectful of our community. Here our community is showcasing all of its positive traditions with a highly respected parade, and the police use that time to conduct a sweep of our youth,” said an angry Zayid Muhammad, the party’s national minister of culture.
“Black leadership should be in Bloomberg and Raymond Kelly’s faces demanding that heads roll for that dangerous brazen disregard for our community,” he finished.

I was thinkin the same thing but 1 million people bought C3 the first week. Out of those 1 million copies bought, how many people are over the age of 25. The new consumers in hiphop embrace everything. Men are walkin around in stretch jeans for goodness sake, so with that being said anything is possible.
