WASHINGTON — Fear and uncertainty were hot commodities in global markets Monday.

Stocks plummeted and currencies fell as shock waves from the Wall Street meltdown continued to reverberate across financial capitals.

The Mexican peso plunged to its lowest level in years. Its stock market dropped 5.4 percent.

Brazil and Russia temporarily halted trading after a series of steep drops on their exchanges.

Meanwhile, Sweden , Denmark and Austria joined Ireland and Germany on a growing list of European countries that have pledged to guarantee bank deposits to tamp down consumer worries.

"This is a stampede," said Valerie Plagnol , chief strategist at CM-CIC Securities in Paris .

On the very day that Washington began to unfold the $700 billion economic rescue mission, foreign governments and investors seemed resigned to a long period of tight credit and turmoil.

Russia suspended its benchmark RTS stock index twice on Monday, as it fell 19.1 percent, its worst ever one-day drop. It had already halted trading three times last Friday, hoping to slow sliding shares and capping the market's worst week in nearly a decade.

Russia on Monday also shut down its second major market, the Micex, three times. It had fallen nearly 19 percent.

The global credit crunch has compounded Russia's financial woes. It's already reeling from the one-two punch of falling oil prices and the loss of billions in foreign investment after the August war with Georgia .

In Latin America , the U.S. financial crisis caused trading on Brazil's stock exchange to be halted twice on a day when the value dropped by 8 percent.

In Argentina , stocks fell 10 percent, and currencies across the region tumbled against the dollar.

"The turmoil is really starting to hit Latin America ," Jane Eddy , a senior regional specialist for ratings agency Standard & Poor's . "You have stock market drops, currencies weakening and credit really drying up. Everyone is on hold waiting to see what will happen over the next two weeks."

The uncertainty comes at a time when Latin America has been enjoying its strongest sustained economic growth in 25 years. The region grew by 5.7 percent in 2007 and was projected to grow by about 4.5 percent in 2008.

Thomaz Teixeira , a stock analyst at Socopa Corretora in Sao Paulo , said investors were not necessarily in a "panic."

"But they're selling for the sake of selling at whatever price," he said. "In time, though, we believe that the market will heal."

In South Africa , the stock market hit its lowest mark in more than eight years. Banks in Zimbabwe ran out of cash after depositors tried to pull out their money.

In Pakistan , already embattled on the political front, the rupee hit a new low against the dollar. With its currency having lost 21 percent of its value already this year, Standard & Poor's warned that the country was close to bankruptcy.

Next door, in India , stocks fell nearly 5.8 percent, the lowest close in two years. The index has shed more than 42 percent of its value this year, with foreign investors leading the retreat.

In response, the capital market regulator lifted curbs Monday on overseas investors to halt record sales by offshore funds.

In the Middle East , Kuwait pumped $374.3 million into the banking systems Monday and Saudi Arabia injected more $26 million into its stock market, local newspapers reported.

Apparently immune to all the turbulence was Iraq . The government has little if any investments in the institutions affected by the crisis and a barely functioning stock market. Most Iraqis keep their money in their homes rather than trust banks.

"We don't believe it will affect our bank balance," said Minister of Industry Fawzi Hariri . "In the short term we'll be one of the least affected nations."

The Iraqi government has more than $25 billion in cash reserves. Even with oil prices dropping below $90 a barrel, the Iraqis forecast oil revenues to be in the neighborhood of $80 billion .

Someone posted earlier and made a great point about how folks on here are biased...I hate using the term "hate". But anyways, a lot of folks on here do always seem to find something wrong with an artist just because they don't like their music, he's not "gangster" enough to their standards. Fuck outta here with that shit. Like for instance, the comments about Pharrell and the Neptunes breaking up. His ego was the reason, them not having any hits. I coulda sworn they produced majority of Madonna's latest LP, coulda sworn it was at least Platinum in 20 countries by now. Ego-wise nobody even hears nothing about Pharrell to even say that. Exactly. Not only that, but you have impressionable minds who will do ANYTHING to mimic the behavior of these individuals. I could be wrong, but I attribute alot of our modern infatuation with materialistic lifestyles to this sort of imagery that is so prevalent in OUR music, t.v., sports, etc. If nothing else, such unnecessary flaunting of wealth is like high profile coonery to me. When was the last time you saw Bill Gates w/ an iced out Windows Pendant? Better yet, tell me when was the last time you saw Bob Johnson or Quincy Jones flashing their ice and pouring champagne on strippers? There is a difference between classy and trashy wealth. Just my opinion though.

It's true. Talib said in an interview that he spent $600 on books. Now that's something that should be in magazines, not how many inches your rims are. I'm not 100% on this, but they were saying that anything over 21 inches is bad for your tires. I could be wrong on that. You want to impress someone with the money you've made through Performing and getting in the booth? ( because it's not rhyming a lot of them do) Open up a grocery store, or buy a House and make sure it's paid for.

Don't get me wrong playboy. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your labor BUUUUUT......when you're at the bottom of the economic, educational, political, industrial, informational and ownership totem polls in this country....collectively as a people, you would think niggaz would be more focused on establishing themselves with something other than liquor, jewelry, cars, rims and clothing. You asked HP about being a Obama supporter yet stating that politics is a tool of destruction. Can't speak for him but personally I don't trust anybody w/ a suit on.....lol...politician, preacher, salesman...whoeva...lol. I agree that religion and politics are arguably 2 of the largest arenas for generating divisive attitudes in society. If Obama wins, he is not going to wave some magic wand and all of our problems will be gone. He is nothing more than a pawn in the grand game. The reason I want to see him win is because 1.) it gives young black men something to aspire for other than music and sports and 2.) if all was legit...there is no way in hell McCain/Palin should win given everything that has occured in this election. Now, will Obama bring about any real change? I think he'd be more effective if this were a dictatorship.....but unfortunately, even w/ good intentions, he would still have to rely on congress to back his agendas. Unfortunately, the powers that be have their own agendas and its going to take more than a well dressed figurehead to solve this countries TRUE problems.

thats a legitimate question worthy of explanation. so here goes:

religion and politics are two of the most powerful, deadly, manipulative vices ever know to man.

can they be used effectively by intelligent people
(ie: people in touch with there higher conscious selves)

absolutely.

religion appeals to one side of the brain. politics to the other.

thats why they are so appealing to the human mind in general.

now if the right people used those to vices to uplift society instead of degrade and control, I wouldnt have nearly as much of a problem with them.

most religions are mythological and extremely exaggerated, which is the problem I have with them. It should be used much more conceptually.

politics dont necessarily have to be a bad thing. If you get down to the bare bone of it. Its not a bad thing. politics are used everywhere, everyday, by everybody, on large and small scales.

there are a lot of politics that go on on this board for example. Just not in the conventional sense.

Now with that said. the word "politician". aka, one who uses and is exceptional at "politics"

again there are a lot of unconventional politicians on this board, for example.

the word has been so demonized (and sometimes rightfully so), and its employment has been so abused, and manipulated for unethical purposes. That can be viewed as a very bad thing.

so when you see me critical of politics and religion, I am critical of them in their conventional and currently applied sense.

But not in the sense of hoe they could be in an ideal situation.

because ideally, they both can be very fruitful. makes sense?

and i dont support barack because he is a politician or because i love conventional politics.

I support him for the implications of him being elected. also, because I like the way he presents himself. I like the thought of an educated black man being charge of the single most powerful position across the globe. feel me?

but like chris rock said. voting for him because he's black is an exaggerated claim. because would flavor flav have the same support if he were running for office?

i think thats a legitimate assertion.

As far as the money these artists spend on they jewelry and such....it's sad. I wouldn't be spending that ish like that, but to each they own. They earn it, so I say they do as they feel. I know when I get my money, I don't want anyone telling me how I shouldn't buy this or buy that when I choose too. have ya'll ever considered this...

Many of these artists are SOLE PROPRIETORS, or better put, they are their OWN business...So, technically, some of that jewelry they are buying is a TAX WRITEOFF...for IMAGE purposes or what not... Real talk...writeoffs:)

Case in point...

One of my business mentors received a phone call from his accountant telling him he needed to go buy a truck. Not a car, but a truck, because he could write it off as something he uses on his property, ya dig?

So, there might be more to the jewelry than we even know. I know for a fact that some artists write their clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc....off for tax purposes. It's a part of their "image", or what they use to sell music, make videos, etc...

It's deep folks...it's called business ownership...
