Spirituality, not Religion, makes kids happy
Relationships more vital to tweens' emotional health than going to church

The link between spirituality and happiness is pretty well-established for teens and adults. More spirituality brings more happiness. Now a study has reached into the younger set, finding the same link in "tweens" and in kids in middle childhood.

Specifically, the study shows that children who feel that their lives have meaning and value and who develop deep, quality relationships — both measures of spirituality, the researchers claim — are happier.  


Personal aspects of spirituality (meaning and value in one's own life) and communal aspects (quality and depth of inter-personal relationships) were both strong predictors of children's happiness, said study leader Mark Holder from the University of British Columbia in Canada and his colleagues Ben Coleman and Judi Wallace.


However, religious practices were found to have little effect on children's happiness, Holder said.

Religion is just one institutionalized venue for the practice of or experience of spirituality, and some people say they are spiritual but are less enthusiastic about the concept of God.

Other research has shown a connection between well-adjusted and well-behaved children and religion, but that is not the same, necessarily, as happiness.

Spirituality trumps temperament
In an effort to identify strategies to increase children's happiness, Holder and colleagues set out to better understand the nature of the relationship between spirituality, religiousness and happiness in children aged 8 to 12 years.

A total of 320 children, from four public schools and two faith-based schools, completed six different questionnaires to rate their happiness, their spirituality, their religiousness and their temperament. Parents were also asked to rate their child's happiness and temperament.

A child's temperament was also an important predictor of happiness. In particular, happier children were more sociable and less shy. The relationship between spirituality and happiness remained strong, even when the authors took temperament into account.

However, counterintuitively, religious practices — including attending church, praying and meditating — had little effect on a child's happiness.

And therein may lie some useful information for parents.

"Enhancing personal meaning may be a key factor in the relation between spirituality and happiness," the researchers stated. Strategies aimed at increasing personal meaning in children  — such as expressing kindness towards others and recording these acts of kindness, as well as acts of altruism and volunteering — may help to make children happier, Holder suggests.

These findings were detailed in the Dec. 11 online edition of the Journal of Happiness Studies.

More on teens and spirituality
Another research project recently added weight to previously known links between spirituality and happiness among teens.

This researchers compared teenagers with the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with their healthy peers. The analysis showed that while spirituality helped all the kids cope, it was especially helpful for the ones with IBD (which causes abdominal pain and other nasty symptoms, as well as higher risk for psychosocial difficulties and mental health problems; it is more serious than and not the same as IBS or spastic colon). The exact cause of IBD is not known, and there is no cure.

The researchers, Dr. Michael Yi and Sian Cotton at the University of Cincinnati, defined spirituality as one's sense of meaning or purpose in life or one's sense of connectedness to the sacred or divine. Again, they weren't talking about religion, church, temple or mosque.

Teams led by Yi and Cotton collected data on socio-demographics, functional health status and psychosocial characteristics as well as spiritual well-being for 67 patients with IBD and 88 healthy adolescents between the ages of 11 and 19.


One of the most important predictors of poorer overall quality of life for both the healthy and the sick teens was having a poorer sense of spiritual well-being, Yi said, although personal characteristics such as self esteem, family functioning and social support were similar between adolescents with IBD and their healthy peers.

Less depression, more well-being
Cotton's analysis of the same 155 adolescents found that higher levels of spiritual well-being were associated with fewer depressive symptoms and better emotional well-being.

"However, even though both healthy adolescents and those with IBD had relatively high levels of spiritual well-being, the positive association between spiritual well-being and mental health outcomes was stronger in the adolescents with IBD as compared to their healthy peers," Cotton said, noting that this indicates spiritual well-being may play a different role for teens with a chronic illness in terms of impacting their health or helping them cope.

The results were detailed in recent online versions of the Journal of Pediatrics and the Journal of Adolescent Health. Yi's and Cotton's research was funded by career development awards by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Memorial Service for Dontaze Storey and Other Victims of Police Murder Set For January 10th



Los Angeles – Family and friends of Dontaze Storey, a 29-year old unarmed Black man who was killed by LAPD officers Oliver Malabuya and Daniel Bunch on Veterans’ Day, will have a memorial service on Saturday, January 10th, at KRST Unity Center (7825 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles). The service will start at 12 pm.



Organizers of the memorial, which include Storey’s family, Coalition for Justice Against Police Murder and Mothers In Action, are also inviting other families of police murder victims to attend and provide testimony. Elected officials and community leaders are being invited also.



“While we are grieving about Dontaze, we know he was not the first unarmed victim of police murder” stated Atun Re Baker, Dontaze’s uncle. “Hopefully, we can work to make sure this doesn’t happen ever again.”



The officers that killed Dontaze Storey were from the Rampart Division, which has been involved in several incidents of murder and malpractice over the years. Some of the examples include:



1.     1996 – Rampart Officer Perez shot 19 year old Javier Ovando in chest and head while he was handcuffed. Mr. Ovando became paralyzed

2.     1997 – Testimony revealed that Rampart officers were involved in the shooting death of Christopher “Notorious BIG” Wallace

3.     1998 – Rampart CRASH officer Brian Hewitt beat a handcuffed Ishmael Jimenez – making the victim vomit blood. Hewitt was later fired

4.     2007 – Rampart officers shot and kill 24 year old Matthew Powell while he was face down in a fetal position

So I will break down the point I was making yesterday, free of cuss words, so that it's clearer.

I understand a few ppl's sentiment on rioting. I saw a few posts on the news board the other day on the subject, and there were some valid points made. We shouldn't burn down our own communities, I receive that. However, I wadn't against rockn the police car and pushin the burning trash dumpster @ the police car cuz it still was a rebellion against the police.

But, I wont discredit the outrage of the youngstas in Oakland, or sleep on the fact that some ppl simply don't know how to organize and need leadership. I think it's kinda uppity to downtalk them, like what they feeln aint valid, or like a revolution don't need them. Yes, it does need ppl who aint scared, and a constructive type of recklessness, if u can follow me. Bring the knowledge and the zeal together and u gotta force to be reckoned with. Neither side should downtalk the other.

I think the question of 'So what we gon' do now?' is burning in everybody's mind. Some say, 'we gon do just like the Panthers' and I aint mad @ that, but let's not forget how the Panthers ended while only remembering how they began. Eldridge Cleaver said 'Eff the leadership, we gon' bust @ these cops tonight' and Lil Bobby Hutton got killed. I think everybody wants the movement, unity, progressiveness, and strength of the Panthers, but are tryna figure out how to go about it w/out it ending w/ everyone in jail, dead, or on drugs.

That junk was traumatizing to ppl in Oakland, to see their hero Huey end up dying in a drug deal, not for the struggle, but 'prolly for a few bucks. I don't think it tarnished Huey's legacy, I just think it spoke volumes to ppl. There was such a spirit of defeat and discouragement after the way the Panthers were dismantled and I think it still lingers to this day.  

With that said, I don't disagree w/ Fizzroy sayin we need to organize like the Panthers, but I do disagree w/ him disrespecting the family in the low way he did, which is worse than racist red necks, IMO.  

The Panthers were organized, disciplined, knowledgable, but they had a certain 'constructive recklessness' that separated them from all other organizations in the Movement. Gave them an edge, and chapters sprang up all over America.

Nevertheless, the Panthers helped victim's families get a lawyer, confront police/police chiefs, and navigate through the legal process of seeking justice. They would have assisted a family with suing, I don't care what nobody say, as well, Oscar Grant's family didn't say 'drop the charges, just get the money,' the way Fizzroy portrayed them.

For him to say the victim's family aint doin nothin, except tryna win the 'dead man lucky bucks lottery' was disrespectful on so many levels, and very hurtful, coming from another Black man.  His opinion is that the cop shouldn't be breathing right now and that he aint gon put his life/safety/freedom on the line and ride on some crooked cops when the family themselves aren't doing the same. Which was an assumption. B/c, no one in the family would make a Public Service Announcement that they planned on murdering cops to seek their own brand of justice.

Fizzroy cut them down to being materialistic, sayin that they gon' be takn trips overseas w/ luxury cars in their driveway. And that when someone asks how they became successful, they gon 'point at a dead nigga picture on the wall.'

PAUSE. THINK ABOUT THAT, THOUGH. SMH...

Now, don't that sound like the words of some racist redneck:

His words were the equivilent of a racist redneck, but we expect hateful words from them; not another Black man, and especially one who speaks as though he desires progression for Black ppl in America.

How do u know what they would use the money for?

*Funeral

*Make sure that Oscar's daughter is set for life: clothing, shelter, food, land/property, college education, car, etc.

*Organization to fight police brutality

They could sue and do anything w/ the money and he cuts them down to a chain and some rims, as if they're HAPPY this happened, moneyhungry pirhannas grateful for the opportunity to sue.

And further, instead of stating his opinions on why suing isn't a good route, he disrespects them, which is why I disrespected him.

So, yup, Dope is an emotional, highly passionate person. In all levels of life, I love hard, I go hard, I'm honest and I don't hold back. I'm one of the most sincere ppl u ever gon meet in real time. But most o' ya'll don't know me in real time, now do u?

I know what we been through, and I happen to be extremely passionate about it. I got Black Pride tatted on my arm as soon as I hit 18,  just on some 'Eff the police' ish, the day they was harrassing my brothers w/ 9 cop cars for 3 Black men chillin on they own front porch.

I know what Europeans have done.

But, I don't agree w/ the answer to all of our questions on how we should move forward being:

HATE ALL WHITE PPL.

And IMO, there's a few ppl on the board that sit behind their keyboards in their respective comfortable places and try to rile up ppl to hate/attack all white ppl. From Hollywood to New York. Rally and Rage Over BART Police Murder of Oscar Grant On January 7th at 11am, a memorial service was held for Oscar Grant at Palma Ceia Baptist Church in Oakland.

In the early afternoon of January 7th, it was announced that officer Johannes Mehserle had resigned from the BART police force so he would not be forced to testify at an internal hearing.

Later in the day, a rally was held at the Fruitvale BART station. Protesters gathered at 3pm and by 5pm the crowd had swelled to over one thousand people. Organizers noted that they intend to build a movement against police brutality and plan to hold several other demonstrations in the coming weeks. After dozens of speakers addressed the crowd for about 2 hours, a march began. Hundreds of protesters marched up International Blvd towards downtown Oakland. As the crowd passed the Lake Merritt BART area, there was a brief confrontation where a police car was attacked and a dumpster lit on fire. Within minutes, riot police arrived and shot tear gas into the crowd. The protest continued into the night as dozens of protesters took over and blocked the intersection of 14th and Broadway for over an hour, with chants of "We are Oscar Grant." A line of riot police then moved in to push the crowd out of the intersection and down 14th Street toward Lake Merritt. The protesters ran down 14th where dozens of car windows were broken and an SUV was set on fire. Police forces charged toward the group a few blocks later, and as protesters dispersed, windows were broken at a McDonald's.

About 9pm, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums appeared near the Lake Merritt end of 14th Street and began walking back towards Broadway passing the damage along the way. People confronted him regarding the BART officer still not having been detained or even questioned one week later. Once Dellums, and the growing crowd following him, arrived at City Hall in Frank Ogawa Plaza, he addressed about 200 protesters from the steps of City Hall. He told the crowd to be respectful. He said the killing was a homicide and that he had ordered the City of Oakland to investigate the BART killing. The crowd interrupted much of his speech, expressing their displeasure with the situation.

As Dellums finished talking to the crowd and headed into City Hall, the crowd starting booing and then many people chanted "Round 2" and rushed toward San Pablo Ave. breaking more car windows. Tear gas was again fired by police. Protesters moved towards Lake Merritt down 17th Street. More windows were smashed and more dumpsters were set on fire. Another car was burned. At about 10pm, police in gas masks in police cars swooped in on protesters at 17th and Jackson. At that point, the crowd of protesters split up again and headed in several different directions. After a sizable crowd began to reconvene at 15th and Broadway, many headed up Telegraph, pulling objects into the road and breaking more windows. Just before 11pm, around 50 people were surrounded by police across from the Paramount Theater on Broadway. Many protesters lay down on the ground as police moved in to arrest them.

Oakland police are reporting that they arrested 105 people for a variety of offenses. Many have been released but some are still being held at Santa Rita jail or the Glenn Dyer County Jail.

BART Police Shoot and Kill Man at Fruitvale BART Station UPDATE: January 7th, 2009: Rally and Rage Over BART Police Murder of Oscar Grant
Fruitvale BART Station Rally Followed by Riots in the Streets of Oakland

In the early hours of January 1st, BART police shot and killed a 22 year old man, Oscar Grant, on the platform of the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland. Witnesses report that Grant was "lying on his stomach with his hands out in a non-threatening position when he was shot". Police have confirmed Grant was unarmed and have suggested the shooting was an accident. Grant lived in Hayward and leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter.

BART officials have not released the name of the officer who shot Grant. After the shooting, BART police seized several cell phones from people on the platform who said they had used the phones' cameras to record what happened. For the first two days BART officials told the mainstream media that surveillance cameras at the station do not record, but then corrected themselves Friday night saying the cameras did record but didn't show the incident.

On January 7th, a memorial service was held at 11am at Palma Ceia Baptist Church and then a rally to protest the shooting began at 3:00pm at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland.

The wall of silence around the identity of the Bart Police Officer who shot Oscar Grant, an unarmed Black Youth pleading for his life, a son, a father of a 4 yr little girl has become intolerable, as well as futile, since the BART officer's face has now been displayed on National news through many witnesses videos.

Confiscating cell phones of witnesses at the shooting scene is a flagrant violation of Constitutional Rights.

As you un-mistakingly know, private US Citizens have the
Constitutional Right to OBSERVE and take pictures of any interactions between other US residents and the public servants whose salaries are paid by our tax dollars to SERVE and PROTECT.

We respectfully but instantly urge you to do the following without any further delays:

1)  The officers involved in the Death of Oscar Grant must be immediately
taken off duty without pay, charged and fully prosecuted;

2) Launch an independent investigation of the shooting
that includes a review of training and hiring practices;

3) Establish an independent residents' review board of BART Police


The Bay Area, National and International Community is watching.

This week, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights joined the call for justice in the shooting of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year old unarmed man shot dead by a BART police officer on January 1st, 2009, at the Fruitvale BART station. As an organization that has tackled the issue of police brutality and accountability for the past 12 years, we share in the anger, sadness, and frustration this tragedy has stirred within our community and beyond.

Several Ella Baker Center staff members -- and many of you -- attended the January 7th rally at the Fruitvale BART Station. We were joined by hundreds of other activists from all over the Bay Area, a crowd that mirrored the incredible diversity of our region. Youth read poetry inspired not only by their pain, but also by their hope for justice; elected officials stood with the community; activists led chants and local performers shared their souls through song. It was a sight to behold.

Specifically, we demand:

*A thorough, independent investigation into the training, supervision, and arrest procedures of BART police.

*A full criminal investigation to be conducted by the State Department of Justice of all officers involved in the shooting that evening.

In addition, we're joining forces with the Courage Campaign and ColorOfChange.org to support a bill by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and Senator Leland Yee that would create a civilian oversight board for BART police. I watched Obama on that show just now and I didn't get the impression that he felt like America is fucked. I keep trying to explain to people that the last time the American economy was really in trouble was during the great depression because at the time the world economic system was based on hard money.

Today the world economic system is based on fiat money, and there will never be another great depression. It simply cannot happen. You can't even really have a bank run anymore because the government will simply give people their money back if a bank fails and they lose their deposits.

The average American with money in the bank does not have a quarter of a million dollars. Those limits are there for businesses, not individuals. There may be protracted recessions and that is just a corrective process of writing off bad debts. People will lose jobs but that is by design. If you want to cut costs, employee expenses are one of the largest costs a company has to pay.

For example I just recently got a Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO with the HSA option. All of the money I put in my HSA is completely tax exempt up to the limit. This is in addition to my Solo 401(k) account. I will never work for another person as an employee ever again in my life! :-D There are always loop holes. They have a fancy title for the study of these booms and busts, "business cycle theory".

it actually made me much more interested in watching the movie they got coming out.

Following on from Dope's "The Arrivals" series, here are those Islam videos I was threatening to post. Better late then never, if you get a chance have a look and tell me what you think. The narrator is an Arab; well versed in Monotheism, Hebrew and Arabic. I think he rides a bit too hard on Muhammad and the Quran, but ARABIC is his culture so I have to respect his views on Arabs. Its interesting listening tho fo sho.
