I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

We cannot walk alone.

And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.

We cannot turn back.

There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by a sign stating: "For Whites Only." We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream."¹


I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. And some of you have come from areas where your quest -- quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I ain't gon lie a nigga kinda teared up fo' that one...but it's coo doe lol. Wow man I can wait till I get off work so I can kiss my son. I know now that he REALLY be whatever he wants to be and not lie to him or have doubts like so many of our past generations parents had to do or did just to push their children. This is the greatest accomplishment I have seen in my 27 years of life. I just have that so many who put lost their lives are not here to see it. (CNN) – According to exit poll results released thus far, Latino voters voted for Barack Obama over John McCain by a more than a 2-1 margin nationally: 66 percent to 31 percent. The proportion voting for the Democratic candidate is up sharply from 2004, when 55 percent of Latino voters supported John Kerry and 44 percent voted for President Bush.

Latinos are responsible for Obama's victory in New Mexico and contributed strongly to his margins in Nevada and Colorado. In New Mexico, Latinos constituted 41 percent of the electorate and voted for Obama by a 69 percent to 30 percent margin; white voters in New Mexico supported McCain 56 percent to 42 percent.

In Colorado, Latinos comprised 13% of the electorate and broke for Obama 64% to 34% while white voters split evenly. In Nevada, Latinos comprised 16 percent of the electorate and supported Obama 78 percent to 20 percent. Fifty-one percent of Nevada's white voters went for McCain.

I was told (10yrs ago, damn) by my poly sci professor that we (Dems) would never get anything done in the White house because there would always be opposition. He said  the only way we would make change would be to have the Senate, and the two houses. Now years later, we have achieved the unthinkable. Not only have we swept, but we have not just a man of color, but a man of the people in the White House.  Next we have to understand that he can't change things over night. It will be a process cleaning up the mess this administration has made.  We have to keep the faith in our choice. They tried to paint Obama as dis honest during the campaign, but never could they come up with anything sneaky. We see his character. We CAN NOT put too much pressure on this man and flip when his plan aren't instant.  He still has to do this fairly. He still need to propose an dideas and let it follow it's path. My hope is this will inspire of all us to step our games up. My grandmother would have been 98 this years. Mother was old enough to pick cotton and drink at the 'BLACK ONLY' fountain.  We would listen to those stories and shake our heads........no knowing how she went through it all. I truly wish she could have seen such a thing as a black president.

I gotta agree that again this is just monumental on so many levels. I too like any person from an African American family who has or had older relatives who would tell them stories about how it was in their day around my age. All the things they witnessed especially in Arkansas where sometimes race is still divided even to this day. My grandfather just passed away in August and he would have turned 83 a week later. He was very heavy into politics and he said in the beginning that Obama would win and he did. I only wished he was here to see this but i know that he is just as excited as we are here right now! I will be so proud to one day tell my kids and grandkids that i was able to be apart of electing the first African American president into office. I'm still trying to grasp that but that statement alone is right up there with people who to this day are very proud to say that they marched with Martin Luther King back in the 60s. Even though Jessie Jackson seems to put his foot in his mouth sometimes i still felt overjoyed watching him get emotional as Barack was named President of the US for 08. It just goes to show how far we as a people and nation has come and even though i wasn't watching every debate and before now wasn't heavy into politics, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice that Obama was definitely about the people in the very beginning. All i wanna say is that even though i was never a McCain supporter he did bow out gracefully and was probably sleep before Obama even made his speech and Mrs. Palin is probably somewhere kicking Bristol out!

My aunt is 71 years old and last night she said she just clapped at the tv. She said that she just ran back to her car and cried. She told me that she never thought that she would see the day. They used to spit at her & my momma for tryin to go to school after de-segregation...I wish my grandmama could have seen this! She started the 1st chapter of the NAACP round here. man this is singlehandedly the proudest moment of my natural born life.  as soon as the polls closed in california, I held my breath and then when they said that obama won, I just cried man.  at the beginning of the day I was nervous because I heard all kinds of bullshit going on at the polls with machines being broke, and ballots not being counted and people who were registered whose name was not on the list at polling places.  the first thought that came to my mind was not this shit again, but the more and more I watched CNN that whole day, my nervousness turned into joy, every hour the polls closed in the east, midwest, mountain ranges and the west.  this win wasn't for black people, this win was for all people.  if anything it was a moral victory to blacks, but it doesn't stop here.  we gotta support and help this man for the next four years cuz bush fucked us all over.  it didn't matter who won, whoever was going to win was going to have to deal with a lot of bullshit starting day one.  so everybody rejoice and lets change the world one step at a time.  OBAMA!!!

So I'm on my way to work this morning and I'm still trying to absorb all of the events from last night.  Had it not happened before my very eyes, you would not have been able to convince me that I would live to see a black president.  As I am analyzing what has transpired, 2 words keep flashing in my head.  Symbolic Perception.  Let those 2 words marinate for a second and think about this.  No matter what you believe to be the true nature of things or if you take interest in conspiracies, religion, politics, etc............none of it changes the underlying SYMBOLIC nature of this moment.  Barack Obama should stand as the ultimate symbol of what is attainable w/ education, hard work, perserverance, understanding and the ability to manipulate how the world PERCEIVES you.  From this point on, all of our EXCUSES are null in void.  I am not saying that the obstacles will magically disappear because they will always exist.  What I am saying though is that for decades race and the associated perception/stigma attached has been our greatest psychological crutch.  

Our people have been on a self destructive auto pilot.....condoning/co-signing a PERCEIVED predictament/fate that only serves to further poison our minds.  We have been our own worst enemies.  We have tried to justify our own negative actions by placing ALL of  the blame on "the system", "the man", "the next n***a", etc.  Even when these arguments have validity.....that still does not change the end goal and what has to be done to reach it.  Obama has been called a lot of things, but the only thing, imo, that really matters is that he is a SYMBOL.  

With that said, he has played his role up to this point...but at the end of the day, him being elected president doesn't change any of the underlying problems in our country.  There will still be gangs, violence, drugs, poverty, homelessness, etc.  In his speech last night he said that he would need our help to make a change.  In all honesty....we are the only ones that can make that change.  The problems in our communities are our own responsibility at the end of the day.  We cannot sleep on this symbolic victory and go back to our day-to-day bullshit.  Your whole perception of what is possible should have changed last night.......regardless of how it came to be.   The same unity that everyone has shown during this election process should not fade away tomorrow or be taken for granted.  Nothing of value is achieved w/o hard work and knowledge on how to pimp the system to work in your favor.  Congratulations to Obama and fam.  History has been made.

He falls in love and marries Michelle Robinson an educated black woman who understands the same struggles.  She is a black woman that has the same Christian faith and values.  Barack and Michelle had two beautiful girls and are determined that their daughter’s generation has the same opportunities that were given to them.



It was God’s plan to educate this young brother in preparation for what was to be his future.  Barack had to understand where he had come from before he could be productive moving forward.  He was driven by his passion for civil rights to improve social justice.  His Christian faith taught him to help others help themselves.  His dream was to be about something larger than himself.  He was actually preparing for the battle that was before him. And he is driven by the blessing of his own children to make sure they have a better life and future.  God’s assignment for his purpose and destiny.



Barack meaning “Blessed” (his middle name is Hussain and his last name rhymes with Osama; people in foreign lands may identify with the name) accepted the nomination for the President of the United States on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech.  This brave soldier is going to lead this country just as Nehemiah led the laborers in Jerusalem.  Barack Hussain Obama is our Nehemiah of this time.  He believes in God, country and moral values.

Change can only come from us, which is why I haven't really gotten that excited over thise election...change should be a part of your daily life. At the end of each day you should ask yourself how you can make the next day even better than the previous one. If you put all of your hope in a person other than self or a vote that's only made every four years then you lose!

It DOES feel mighty good to have a Black president! Never saw that comin' when I was young. Too bad BIG, Pac, Aaliyah and many others aren't here to see it. At least they exist in our memories.... So this was King's dream huh? I went to work today and this white coworker of mine was like, "So you heard the good news?" with a wide grin on his face and a thumbs up.

At the same time, we Black people gotta step our game up. TRY to get rid of certain community problems such as drugs and violence and ensure that our children will live with much less worries and troubles than we had. That's the goal of life....

The fact you were "afraid" you would vote for someone who would let you down is cowardice, in my opinion.  You need to be man enough to vote for who you believe in, and if they fail, be willing to deal with the consequences.  It's almost like saying I'm not gonna vote, so if stuff is f*cked up, I can't be blamed for it.

Leaders do two things...

They not only lead from the front by being the first in battle, but during times of duress, they go to the back to push those who need help up.

Its been a long time coming that we had a minority persident period not just a black one because it was alot of other minorites that went threw hard times like us. Lets keep the historical event and the actions that need to take place seperate. Nothing has changed yet. That black man will have to work double hard to maintain his crediability.

Side note, its good to hear alot of people saying "We Did it". Now lets see how long this last. The whole Unity thing. Ive never heard so many black people say "WE" then I have in the last 10 hours. Man, Ny was festive as hell. I was at an election day party and EVERY TIME THEY BROADCAST THAT bARACK TOOK A STATE, YOU HEARD CHEERS IN THE WHOLE VENUE. The first place I went to I couldn't get in. The line was down the block. So I went to BK. I was one of two Black people there. I didn't act up the way I wanted to, but I licked off some shots, West Indian style. While we're building, just wanna say something. Yeah we have a Brother in the white house, but he couldn't do that without the Black Woman. Good morning to you also. 1st i'd like to say i feel you on what you said. But there's one thing you didn't mention, what are WE going to do to make sure Obama doesn't "bleep up"? Me personally i am into politics because it affects me and my children's lives. I agree with you, so many people are saying "we did it" and that's peace. I just want to see how many keep up the United front and roll with him till the end, onto a possible next term.

Plain and simple it's going to be tough times ahead, one man cant' change it by himself. If we keep having his back like we did during this election process and not turn our backs on the 1st decision he makes we dont' like, I think Obama will help the process of Change that's coming.

For me it was beautiful to see all the younger people out there celebrating and working to help make this happen. I've been voting since 18. I've knocked myself up the head trying to get my people to see that there's powers in numbers and to hold your city reps, counselors, governors, senators all of them accountable.

Trust and believe things are rolling in the right direction. now it's up to all races to be patient and have Obama's back and let's get this movement going.

I feel you bro, today I got up early and started to embrace the whole attitude of change.  I got my son up and saw him out the door to school and took with me something Barack spoke on during the run for the Democratic nomination when he spoke to minorities and said we must have a sense of responsibility.  He said what needed to be said, I took that as him telling me that I need to try harder, make better decisions for my son and show him what being a man is all about.  Hopefully others do the same, if we all embrace that mentality and stop all the dumb ish, makin it rain for no damn reason, etc.........  we as a country may start to improve rapidlly.  I feel where you comin from and feel the same way, hopefully Farrakan can have another million man march and speak to us black men as a whole and get it threw to the few who aren't on track that we must do better as a whole to help bring Barack's vision of change to life.  The winning of the election was just beggining.

This has to be one of the biggest breakthrough in history making and I have to say I'm proud to be part of making history in doing my part by voting!

I can now say that my son has witness a black president in his time, not only my son but my daughter as well, more important for my son who will be able to say one day anything is possible for a black man's dream to be reality.. They are now capable in turning dreams into reality with the help of motivation from Obama. He gave hope to the hopeless and I can't feel but be overjoyed with sarrow for those who really needed to witness aren't here.

Overall we did it..we did it folks.. neverless did I see this comming, it's clear theirs hope for unity in all colors of mankind..

I'm just as happy as ya'll are in making the biggest history making...this is a moment that will never be forgotten..

if a country is based on the miseducation of everyday people, how can we expect these same people to grow into intelligent human beings capable of running an efficient economy? its just not possible. if you give a man a fish he will eat that day and be hungry the next... if you teach a man to fish not only will he eat that day, but on the days following as well...

i'll stop talking in metaphors now lol but what i'm saying is if we put the "proper" education of all people 1st and foremost, then we can expect great turn around when all those educated make educated decisions for our economy..... my mother was a teacher for 20 years my father was a professor @ a college here in arizona for 10+ then started to head the deparment he was under after that... education has always been a force in my household, and i look around at some people who only had the means to receive the education handed out "freely" ha @ school.. not saying monetary but the means, if you have an uneducated parent, you will only be as smart as them or smarter if you're in the right district..and unfortunately funding is not distrubuted fairly to inner city schools so resources for those children are slim.... so if you go to an underfunded school, come from a household learned on basic education, you are doomed from the start.. UNLESS you find it in yourself to realize your potential and UNDERSTAND learning is only what you make of it... the more you read, the more you know... IGNORANCE MAY BE BLISS BUT KNOWLEDGE IS POWER..

yea i agree, no doubt.  Im a firm believe that education is the key to everything.  I threw the economy in there, simply due to the fact that they go hand in hand.  Both breathe life into the other.

thats why really if you think about it.  You almost never see one with out the other.  Most good economies are accompanied by good education systems, and vice versa.  but there are some exceptions.  I agree with your post fully tho.

Especially because it directly appies to me.  I grew up in that inner city school system you speak of.  The one that recycles the same books for decades to these kids.  And purposely grooms inner-city youth to be blue collar workers.  They run them like bad day care facilities more than actual schools.

But I stand as a product of the inner-city public school system, the state college system, and currently a grad-school student a non-traditional school.  There are some perks to coming  from the bottoms though and getting good grades ironically.  my undeergrad education was paid for.

but wiht a ratio of 1 out of every 10 minority students actually making the best of public schools.  They mos def need some serious restructuring.  Starts with the district superintendents now being wardens though, and actually caring about the youth.

yea i agree, no doubt.  Im a firm believe that education is the key to everything.  I threw the economy in there, simply due to the fact that they go hand in hand.  Both breathe life into the other.

thats why really if you think about it.  You almost never see one with out the other.  Most good economies are accompanied by good education systems, and vice versa.  but there are some exceptions.  I agree with your post fully tho.

Especially because it directly appies to me.  I grew up in that inner city school system you speak of.  The one that recycles the same books for decades to these kids.  And purposely grooms inner-city youth to be blue collar workers.  They run them like bad day care facilities more than actual schools.

But I stand as a product of the inner-city public school system, the state college system, and currently a grad-school student a non-traditional school.  There are some perks to coming  from the bottoms though and getting good grades ironically.  my undeergrad education was paid for.

but wiht a ratio of 1 out of every 10 minority students actually making the best of public schools.  They mos def need some serious restructuring.  Starts with the district superintendents now being wardens though, and actually caring about the youth.

Wow! This is by far the realest post I've read today!

History was made, people united, which is great and I was VERY happy that I was able to witness history along with my 5 month old daughter sitting with me watching the Obama speech but how long will this unity last? Will we go back to the same ole same ole Monday once all the hype/hoopla dies down? Have we placed so much hope in Obama & his flawless image that when he makes a mistake/bad decision that we will throw him under the bus?

I believe Obama is what America needed. Hope for the people, inspiration for the youth BUT the only thing we have won is a MORAL VICTORY! Our work along with Obama's has just begun. I'm glad to hear we are on the same page. Let me ask you, have you ever visited Obama's  homepage? He has given some of the greatest speeches and he's also explained a little bit about how he plans to make changes. To be honest alot of the minorities and middle class wont like some becuase he's going to be holding us accountable. For example,  you see how Bush cut the Head Start budget in half? Okay Obama proposes to add $$$ to that budget, but also for moms who are not working and just sitting at home, well he's asking that they get involved with their kids school. Volunteering, parent council. These are women who are home collecting checks, and some who are home just becuase of circumstances.

How many women do you really believe will step up??? Half will, and the other half will bitch and moan about getting involved. Like you said, stop letting your kids do grown things and think it's cute. The men on this post that stated they want to show thier sons this history, that's peace. I can honestly say that WE as a race need to call each other out. Me personally i plan on making sure my neighbors know who their city selectmen are. U know what they say right? Money talks.. I'd have to do some researching within that sector.. But 75% they do make most of the financial and corporate decisions within they own sectors.. But somehow they manage that we us citizens pay for their bs mess.. U know with the whole financial crisis.. If anything we should be upset with federal reserve because they the one that print money..

What happen is they printed to much money and loaned them to banks.. In return banks gave these loans to folks who will never pay back.. That's why the economy is an a turmoil because when the federal reserve loaned all these banks money they hiked up the interest rate.. In return the bank gave loans to these folks that will not pay back no loan with a 12% interest rate or higher.. And now we herd some of these banks merging with other banks selling out.. Because the couldn't afford to operate with a high % of customers that arent paying their loans.. Just a few weeks back we herd federal reserve cutting interest rates.. And the interest rates stay fluctuating and the markets keep reacting when they fluctuate..


Anyways enough of that.. I don't wanna feel like I'm in my finance class or reading a text book.. Just wanna give my perspectives on money now and corporations.

When he ran for Senate a people in power told him not too including prominent Blacks.

Basically the trouble we have is due to Banks not diversifying their investments good enough and lack of regulation.

We didn't regulate the banks for creating loan with dangerous consequences.

And the banks saw all the money being made in real estate so they all dumped too much of their stock in real estate.

So when the boom slowed values plummeted and loans couldn't get paid.

So out wit all the money, cuz stocks failed.

And places like Aig who deals with insurance mainly, lost they ass cuz they had no bizness putting that much of their investment in real estate.

Then gas prices brought consumer spending to a slow and trickle down works both ways good and bad.
