GONAIVES, Haiti - Haitian police found 495 corpses when muddy floodwaters began to recede on Friday from the port city of Gonaives following days of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Hanna, the town's police commissioner said on Friday.

"The weather is calm now and we are discovering more bodies. We have found 495 bodies so far and there are 13 people missing," commissioner Ernst Dorfeuille told Reuters.

"The smell of the dead is very unpleasant in Gonaives. The death toll could be even higher."

Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1856 - August 4, 1931) was the first African American heart surgeon.[1] He was known as one of the most skilled American surgeons of his era.[citation needed] Williams is known today for performing an early surgery on the pericardium, repairing a knife wound with the use of sutures. He performed this surgery at Provident Hospital,[2] Chicago, on July 10, 1893, a hospital which he founded, and one of the few hospitals that welcomed African-Americans. During the administration of President Grover Cleveland, Williams was appointed as Surgeon-in-Chief of Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C., another of the few hospitals that would admit African-Americans. In addition to organizing the hospital, Williams also established a training school for African-American nurses at the facility.

Williams was a teacher of Clinical Surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee and was an attending surgeon at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He worked hard to create more hospitals for African Americans. In 1895 he co-founded the National Medical Association for black doctors, and in 1913 he became a charter member and the only black in the American College of Surgeons. Williams died of a stroke on August 4, 1931 in Idlewild, Michigan.

In 1898, Williams married Alice Johnson, daughter of the sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel and a maid. .[5]

The first surgeon to successfully perform open-heart surgery was a Black man. Yessir!!!  Wadn't no successful open-heart surgeries before that. The local newspaper honored Daniel Hale Williams, that is, until they found out he was Black.

Some more facts:

When he was bout 17, DHW goes to sea for 2 years..sees the midwest, Winsconsin..he encounters Midwestern immigrants & becomes a handyman/janitor for a white immigrant, who is a doctor. Since he's an immigrant, he didn't have any of the racist American ways, so the physician mentors and encourages him.  DHW sleeps at the medical office at night but starts skipping sleep to read the medical books.  He applies for the Chicago School of Medicine (Chi-Town stand UP!!) & is admitted.  He becomes the first Black to graduate and is a founding physician of Provident Hospital.

Meanwhile, a man named Samuel Cornish worked in a warehouse and went straight to bars after work to drink nickel beer.  In 1892, he gets in a HORRIFIC bar fight w/ someone who drives a knife in his chest.  His friends pick him up and & carry him 4 blocks to Provident Hospital.

Of course he lands on DHW's table, who w/ no anesthesia, no x-ray machine, no anti-coagulant drugs to keep the blood from clotting, etc.  (Good thing dude was drunk off his ass!)  DHW opens him up, extracts the knife from his heart, sews his heart up, and successfully saves his life.

They called him a "Miracle Doctor" till they found out he was Black but that aint stop the Republican president from calling him to Howard University to ressurect their medical facility.

He makes a medical school out of a trash dump, literally, takes objects from a trash dump & creates the necessary tools & objects.

He returns to Providence Hospital 10 years later and triples the size of Provident.  He becomes a member of the NAACP, and goes back to Howard every 3 years until his death in 1931.

Now, that's some dedication for yo ass!!!

Inglewood officers identified in fatal shooting

The eight were involved in the death of a homeless man who had a toy gun in his waistband. Two of the officers participated in other fatal shootings in recent years.

After days of delay, Inglewood police officials on Friday identified the eight officers involved in last weekend's fatal shooting of a homeless man who had a toy gun in his waistband.

All of the officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation into the shooting, police officials said. They will also be required to undergo "supplemental training" before being allowed back into field assignments.




Full coverage of Inglewood police....Those identified were: Officers Max Koffman, a 17-year police veteran; Loren Robinson, a 10 1/2-year veteran; John Baca, an eight-year veteran; Caroline Amezcua, a five-year veteran; Christopher Anderson, a one-year veteran; Ryan Green, a one-year veteran; Zerai Massey, a 5 1/2-year veteran; and Sgt. Matt Hart, a 20-year veteran.

The officers fired as many as 47 rounds at Eddie Felix Franco on Sunday after he appeared to go for a gun in his waistband, police said. The object turned out to be a realistic-looking toy gun, police said.

Franco's death was the fourth fatal shooting by Inglewood police in as many months. Three of the four killed were unarmed, police said.


Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks drew criticism this week for failing to publicly address the shooting or to release details quickly. When she spoke out Thursday, four days after the shooting, she said she withheld the officers' names so that investigators could make certain they knew which officers at the scene had fired their weapons.

Among the department's recent critics, Donald Nicholson, vice chairman of the city's citizen police oversight commission, said that releasing the officers' names was "a step in the right direction."

"Change starts from the bottom up and not the top down," Nicholson said. "I think our city government, our city administrators are reacting to the community asking for information."

Police said that none of the officers involved in Franco's shooting participated in the three other shootings, the first of which occurred in May.

Two of the officers, however, were involved in other fatal shootings in recent years, according to law enforcement records reviewed by The Times.

In May 2007, Massey shot and killed an unarmed man, Richard Tyson, records show.

According to a memo by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, Massey and another officer had seen Tyson riding a bicycle on the sidewalk and ordered him to stop.

The officers recognized Tyson as a gang member, the memo said, and later told investigators they saw him reach for a bulge in his waistband and believed they saw a gun.

After a chase, Massey found him hiding behind a bush. The officer said he shouted at Tyson to stay on the ground and show his hands, but Tyson advanced toward him and moved his hands toward his waistband and started to tuck them into his sweat shirt. Massey fired six shots, hitting him in several places, including his back and torso.

No weapon was found on Tyson. Instead, officers discovered a packaged T-shirt in the front center pocket of his sweat shirt.

Tyson's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Massey and the Inglewood Police Department, alleging that the shooting was unprovoked.

In April, prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against Massey, concluding that Tyson's actions were "consistent with a person who was armed and dangerous" and that the officer's "response with deadly force was reasonable under the circumstances."

In a January 2004 shooting, Koffman was among nine officers who gunned down Robert Michael Robbins in the parking lot of a motel.

District attorney's records show that Robbins was wanted in a double slaying in Ventura County that occurred a year earlier. Sheriff's homicide detectives there sought the help of Inglewood police to arrest Robbins and warned officers that he was probably armed.

The officers attempted to arrest Robbins as he left the motel and climbed into his GMC Yukon. They opened fire when Robbins reversed the vehicle toward officers. After one volley of shots, an officer repeatedly said, "He's still moving!" and officers opened fire again. Robbins was struck three times in the head.

A district attorney memo makes no mention of a weapon being found on Robbins. But prosecutors concluded Koffman and other officers "fired their weapons in self-defense and the defense of each other."

In America's ongoing culture wars, once the race card gets played, it's only a matter of time before hip-hop comes under fire. Last year, shock jock Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers' women's basketball team somehow morphed into a sensationalistic national debate over rap lyrics. This year, the controversy over the Reverend Jeremiah Wright has led, perhaps inevitably, to a right-wing hissy fit over presidential candidate Barack Obama's hip-hop constituency.
In a recent article for right-wing web site HumanEvents. com, entitled "Obama's Other Jeremiah Wrights," former New York Post staffer Evan Gahr reported that high-profile rappers like Jay-Z, Ludacris, Q-Tip, and Will. I. Am are "gaga" over Obama. Gahr called the Democratic front-runner "an apologist for their 'music'" — downplaying the fact that Obama has expressed concern about the lyrical content of mainstream rap in the past, while hinting at the genre's underlying social issues.
A self-described "liberal-basher," Gahr is peeved that Obama's links to hip-hop artists have gone "entirely unnoticed" by media attack dogs who have made Reverend Wright a defining issue in the 2008 election. Gahr's main criticism seems to be rap's questionable language: "Where else but rap do people talk so openly about n-----, b-----, and hoes? What other industry makes millions of dollars from these words?" Gahr blustered, like a Bill O'Reilly wanna-be.
Yet while Gahr accuses Obama of "moral hypocrisy" for being down with hip-hop, his beliefs don't seem to apply to himself. In a 2004 interview on LukeFord. net, Gahr repeatedly used the phrase "dumb cunt" to describe his former co-worker Mona Charen, whom he also described as a "bigger bitch than Lillian Hellman." If that's not moral hypocrisy, what is?
Curiously, Gahr overlooks the important fact that Obama's support in the hip-hop community hasn't just come from mainstream artists. Dozens, if not hundreds, of underground rappers from all over the country have strongly resonated with the candidate's message.
The Bay Area hip-hop community in particular has been solidly behind Barack, as evidenced by the popular "Obizzle Fa Shizzle" T-shirts seen around town. Artists such as Zion-I, Blackalicious, Martin Luther, D'Wayne Wiggins, and Goapele have all been featured performers at "Barack the Vote" rallies, while Kev Choice and D Labrie have gone a step further by recording songs inspired by Obama's historic candidacy.
Despite being featured during CNN's Super Tuesday coverage, Labrie's "Vote for Barack" apparently escaped Gahr's rap radar. The song — which jacks both the beat and cadence from Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot" — offers lyrics which build on what Obama has called "the audacity of hope": Vote for Barack/Not because he's black or a Democrat/But because he kicks the facts/'Bout reaching the youth, ending the war/We really need a change in the US for sure.
Initially, Labrie says, he was skeptical of Obama's sincerity, due to what he calls the "Condoleeza Rice factor." But "when [Obama] reached out to the hip-hop community, it felt like a validation," he says. "I felt no one had reached out to the inner city. Because he reached out so hard to the hip-hop community, I just decided to put my name on the line and just do it."
The rapper posted "Vote for Barack" on MySpace and blasted it via e-mail to fellow members of the Hip Hop Congress organization. "The song just took on a life of its own," he says. He's been in contact with Obama campaign staffers, but "the craziest thing to me was how the 'hood cats was feelin' it," he adds.
Choice's "Obama Song" is also a far cry from the ignorant rapper stereotype hip-hop critics have stubbornly clung to. Updating Sam Cooke's civil rights anthem "Change Gonna Come" with a sped-up vocal sample (à la Kanye West), Choice explains why Obama is his pick for president: He's the only candidate I feel really represents/A new direction, a fresh perspective/These politics is full of so much deception/I listen to his message/His views on the issues/He stands firm trying to make it better for the people.
Choice also posted his song on MySpace, and got an immediate response. "I got more hits than I've ever had. People were loving it. They started posting it on their pages ... They can really relate to it. It kinda keeps them motivated," he says.
Neither Choice nor Labrie are surprised that race has become such a prominent issue in the 2008 campaign. "As the election gets closer and closer, the attacks are getting harsher," Choice says. "They're bringing up the Jeremiah Wright thing and the black church every day. That's like the main issue."
Labrie says Obama is being "demonized" over Jeremiah Wright and hip-hop, adding, "there are historical issues that do need to be addressed. It scares people that someone that's black has that platform to speak on it. With things like the Sean Bell [acquittal] happening, [race] comes back out."
Choice feels "it's a good thing anytime someone from the hip-hop generation gets involved in the political process. A lot of people in that age group don't really care who's the president," he explains, adding that he recently attended a Jay-Z concert at Oakland's Oracle Arena where the rap superstar put Obama's face on a big screen TV as 13,000 people cheered.
Last year, when the issue of hip-hop lyrics came up amidst the Imus controversy, Labrie noted Obama's disapproving yet not entirely unsympathetic response. "I get that same talk from my aunties," he says, adding that most mainstream discussions involving hip-hop lack proper context.
Indeed, blasting hip-hop for glorifying stereotypes while exploiting those same stereotypes is nothing new for conservatives. However, using hip-hop as a vehicle for social change is a marked improvement on apolitical, morally dubious sentiments, just as Obama's candidacy represents a shift from the same ol' politics that got us into this mess in the first place. That's why folks like Gahr should check themselves before they wreck themselves. After all, if you're going to play the race card, play with a full deck.

Obizzle Fashizzle feat. DLabrie

In America's ongoing culture wars, once the race card gets played, it's only a matter of time before hip-hop comes under fire. Last year, shock jock Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers' women's basketball team somehow morphed into a sensationalistic national debate over rap lyrics. This year, the controversy over the Reverend Jeremiah Wright has led, perhaps inevitably, to a right-wing hissy fit over presidential candidate Barack Obama's hip-hop constituency.
In a recent article for right-wing web site HumanEvents. com, entitled "Obama's Other Jeremiah Wrights," former New York Post staffer Evan Gahr reported that high-profile rappers like Jay-Z, Ludacris, Q-Tip, and Will. I. Am are "gaga" over Obama. Gahr called the Democratic front-runner "an apologist for their 'music'" — downplaying the fact that Obama has expressed concern about the lyrical content of mainstream rap in the past, while hinting at the genre's underlying social issues.
A self-described "liberal-basher," Gahr is peeved that Obama's links to hip-hop artists have gone "entirely unnoticed" by media attack dogs who have made Reverend Wright a defining issue in the 2008 election. Gahr's main criticism seems to be rap's questionable language: "Where else but rap do people talk so openly about n-----, b-----, and hoes? What other industry makes millions of dollars from these words?" Gahr blustered, like a Bill O'Reilly wanna-be.
Yet while Gahr accuses Obama of "moral hypocrisy" for being down with hip-hop, his beliefs don't seem to apply to himself. In a 2004 interview on LukeFord. net, Gahr repeatedly used the phrase "dumb cunt" to describe his former co-worker Mona Charen, whom he also described as a "bigger bitch than Lillian Hellman." If that's not moral hypocrisy, what is?
Curiously, Gahr overlooks the important fact that Obama's support in the hip-hop community hasn't just come from mainstream artists. Dozens, if not hundreds, of underground rappers from all over the country have strongly resonated with the candidate's message.
The Bay Area hip-hop community in particular has been solidly behind Barack, as evidenced by the popular "Obizzle Fa Shizzle" T-shirts seen around town. Artists such as Zion-I, Blackalicious, Martin Luther, D'Wayne Wiggins, and Goapele have all been featured performers at "Barack the Vote" rallies, while Kev Choice and D Labrie have gone a step further by recording songs inspired by Obama's historic candidacy.
Despite being featured during CNN's Super Tuesday coverage, Labrie's "Vote for Barack" apparently escaped Gahr's rap radar. The song — which jacks both the beat and cadence from Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot" — offers lyrics which build on what Obama has called "the audacity of hope": Vote for Barack/Not because he's black or a Democrat/But because he kicks the facts/'Bout reaching the youth, ending the war/We really need a change in the US for sure.
Initially, Labrie says, he was skeptical of Obama's sincerity, due to what he calls the "Condoleeza Rice factor." But "when [Obama] reached out to the hip-hop community, it felt like a validation," he says. "I felt no one had reached out to the inner city. Because he reached out so hard to the hip-hop community, I just decided to put my name on the line and just do it."
The rapper posted "Vote for Barack" on MySpace and blasted it via e-mail to fellow members of the Hip Hop Congress organization. "The song just took on a life of its own," he says. He's been in contact with Obama campaign staffers, but "the craziest thing to me was how the 'hood cats was feelin' it," he adds.
Choice's "Obama Song" is also a far cry from the ignorant rapper stereotype hip-hop critics have stubbornly clung to. Updating Sam Cooke's civil rights anthem "Change Gonna Come" with a sped-up vocal sample (à la Kanye West), Choice explains why Obama is his pick for president: He's the only candidate I feel really represents/A new direction, a fresh perspective/These politics is full of so much deception/I listen to his message/His views on the issues/He stands firm trying to make it better for the people.
Choice also posted his song on MySpace, and got an immediate response. "I got more hits than I've ever had. People were loving it. They started posting it on their pages ... They can really relate to it. It kinda keeps them motivated," he says.
Neither Choice nor Labrie are surprised that race has become such a prominent issue in the 2008 campaign. "As the election gets closer and closer, the attacks are getting harsher," Choice says. "They're bringing up the Jeremiah Wright thing and the black church every day. That's like the main issue."
Labrie says Obama is being "demonized" over Jeremiah Wright and hip-hop, adding, "there are historical issues that do need to be addressed. It scares people that someone that's black has that platform to speak on it. With things like the Sean Bell [acquittal] happening, [race] comes back out."
Choice feels "it's a good thing anytime someone from the hip-hop generation gets involved in the political process. A lot of people in that age group don't really care who's the president," he explains, adding that he recently attended a Jay-Z concert at Oakland's Oracle Arena where the rap superstar put Obama's face on a big screen TV as 13,000 people cheered.
Last year, when the issue of hip-hop lyrics came up amidst the Imus controversy, Labrie noted Obama's disapproving yet not entirely unsympathetic response. "I get that same talk from my aunties," he says, adding that most mainstream discussions involving hip-hop lack proper context.
Indeed, blasting hip-hop for glorifying stereotypes while exploiting those same stereotypes is nothing new for conservatives. However, using hip-hop as a vehicle for social change is a marked improvement on apolitical, morally dubious sentiments, just as Obama's candidacy represents a shift from the same ol' politics that got us into this mess in the first place. That's why folks like Gahr should check themselves before they wreck themselves. After all, if you're going to play the race card, play with a full deck.

Forgotten woman: But despite all her problems Carol McCain says she still adores he ex-husband

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator’s presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain’s three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain’s first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later. Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. ‘I have no bitterness,’

she says. ‘My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.

‘My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.’

Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

McCain was then earning little more than £25,000 a year as a naval officer, while his new father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was a multi-millionaire who had impeccable political connections.

He first met Carol in the Fifties while he was at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was a privileged, but rebellious scion of one of America’s most distinguished military dynasties – his father and grandfather were both admirals.

But setting out to have a good time, the young McCain hung out with a group of young officers who called themselves the ‘Bad Bunch’.

His primary interest was women and his conquests ranged from a knife-wielding floozy nicknamed ‘Marie, the Flame of Florida’ to a tobacco heiress.

Carol fell into his fast-living world by accident. She escaped a poor upbringing in Philadelphia to become a successful model, married an Annapolis classmate of McCain’s and had two children – Douglas and Andrew – before renewing what one acquaintance calls ‘an old flirtation’ with McCain.

It seems clear she was bowled over by McCain’s attention at a time when he was becoming bored with his playboy lifestyle.

‘He was 28 and ready to settle down and he loved Carol’s children,’ recalled another Annapolis graduate, Robert Timberg, who wrote The Nightingale’s Song, a bestselling biography of McCain and four other graduates of the academy.

The couple married and McCain adopted Carol’s sons. Their daughter, Sidney, was born a year later, but domesticity was clearly beginning

to bore McCain – the couple were regarded as ‘fixtures on the party circuit’ before McCain requested combat duty in Vietnam at the end of 1966.

He was assigned as a bomber pilot on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin.

What follows is the stuff of the McCain legend. He was shot down over Hanoi in October 1967 on his 23rd mission over North Vietnam and was badly beaten by an angry mob when he was pulled, half-drowned from a lake.

Over the next five-and-a-half years in the notorious Hoa Loa Prison he was regularly tortured and mistreated.

It was in 1969 that Carol went to spend the Christmas holiday – her third without McCain – at her parents’ home. After dinner, she left to drop off some presents at a friend’s house.

It wasn’t until some hours later that she was discovered, alone and in terrible pain, next to the wreckage of her car. She had been hurled through the windscreen.

After her first series of life-saving operations, Carol was told she may never walk again, but when doctors said they would try to get word to McCain about her injuries, she refused, insisting: ‘He’s got enough problems, I don’t want to tell him.’

H. Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, future presidential candidate and advocate of prisoners of war, paid for her medical care.

When McCain – his hair turned prematurely white and his body reduced to little more than a skeleton – was released in March 1973, he told reporters he was overjoyed to see Carol again.

But friends say privately he was ‘appalled’ by the change in her appearance. At first, though, he was kind, assuring her: ‘I don’t look so good myself. It’s fine.’

He bought her a bungalow near the sea in Florida and another former PoW helped him to build a railing so she could pull herself over the dunes to the water.

‘I thought, of course, we would live happily ever after,’ says Carol. But as a war hero, McCain was moving in ever-more elevated circles.

Through Ross Perot, he met Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California. A sympathetic Nancy Reagan took Carol under her wing.

But already the McCains’ marriage had begun to fray. ‘John started carousing and running around with women,’ said Robert Timberg.

McCain has acknowledged that he had girlfriends during this time, without going into details. Some friends blame his dissatisfaction with Carol, but others give some credence to her theory of a mid-life crisis.

He was also fiercely ambitious, but it was clear he would never become an admiral like his illustrious father and grandfather and his thoughts were turning to politics.

In 1979 – while still married to Carol – he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage.

Carol and her children were devastated. ‘It was a complete surprise,’ says Nancy Reynolds, a former Reagan aide.

‘They never displayed any difficulties between themselves. I know the Reagans were quite shocked because they loved and respected both Carol and John.’

Another friend added: ‘Carol didn’t fight him. She felt her infirmity made her an impediment to him. She justified his actions because of all he had gone through. She used to say, “He just wants to make up for lost time.”’

Indeed, to many in their circle the saddest part of the break-up was Carol’s decision to resign herself to losing a man she says she still adores.

Friends confirm she has remained friends with McCain and backed him in all his campaigns. ‘He was very generous to her in the divorce but of course he could afford to be, since he was marrying Cindy,’ one observed.

McCain transferred the Florida beach house to Carol and gave her the right to live in their jointly-owned townhouse in the Washington suburb of Alexandria. He also agreed to pay her alimony and child support.

A former neighbour says she subsequently sold up in Florida and Washington and moved in 2003 to Virginia Beach. He said: ‘My impression was that she found the new place easier to manage as she still has some difficulties walking.’

Meanwhile McCain moved to Arizona with his new bride immediately after their 1980 marriage. There, his new father-in-law gave him a job and introduced him to local businessmen and political powerbrokers who would smooth his passage to Washington via the House of Representatives and Senate.

And yet despite his popularity as a politician, there are those who won’t forget his treatment of his first wife.

Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans’ rights, said: ‘I have been following John McCain’s career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is – deceit.

‘When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.

‘Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.

‘This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.’

One old friend of the McCains said: ‘Carol always insists she is not bitter, but I think that’s a defence mechanism. She also feels deeply in his debt because in return for her agreement to a divorce, he promised to pay for her medical care for the rest of her life.’

Carol remained resolutely loyal as McCain’s political star rose. She says she agreed to talk to The Mail on Sunday only because she wanted to publicise her support for the man who abandoned her.

Indeed, the old Mercedes that she uses to run errands displays both a disabled badge and a sticker encouraging people to vote for her ex-husband. ‘He’s a good guy,’ she assured us. ‘We are still good friends. He is the best man for president.’

But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.

‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’

Alaska is no high-tech haven, so it's understandable that Gov. Sarah Palin is a little-known quantity when it comes to tech policy and renewable energy.



In a surprise move Friday, presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain chose Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Palin, 44, was elected two years ago, becoming Alaska's youngest governor and its first female governor, and hasn't established a long public record.

What is clear about Palin is that like many Alaska officials, she heartily supports onshore and offshore drilling in the state, particularly for opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. That policy doesn't differ too much from McCain's--he reversed his position on drilling this summer, but he is still reticent about tapping into the ANWR. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama opposes drilling in the ANWR, and has instead pushed the development of renewable sources of energy. Obama has said that he could be open to investigating some areas that are currently off-limits. Palin's support of ANWR drilling isn't surprising given that the state's economy depends heavily on the oil and gas industry.



Still, she's not entirely beholden to Big Oil. A fiscal conservative, Palin voted in December to raise taxes for oil companies by $1.5 billion, according to the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank that issues a biannual state governor report card based on tax records. Cato typically excludes Alaska from its report card because the state's budget swings so widely on fluctuating oil prices based on world demand.



Chris Edwards, director of tax policy at Cato, called the governor's record on energy "uninspiring" because her tax increase didn't result in significant tax cuts elsewhere. Instead, in June, she proposed suspending fuel taxes for residents for a year, a move that would save Alaska residents an estimated $40 million.



Edwards added that despite the lack of a major software or Internet industry, Palin has not issued any tax breaks for technology companies or technology initiatives as an incentive to bring such businesses to the state (an admittedly difficult thing to do).




On the tech policy side, Palin has almost no record on issues such as Net neutrality, data privacy, and wiretapping. But there's one exception that's sure to pique the interest of privacy advocates: on May 28, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin signed a bill that would make Alaska the ninth state to not comply with the Real ID Act, a federal law requiring national identification cards.



"It's something to reflect on as far as caring about people's privacy," said Cord Blomquist, technology policy analyst at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a libertarian think tank in Washington, D.C.



Mead Treadwell, a technology-focused venture capitalist and chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, a federal advisory commission to President Bush and Congress on Arctic research issues, said he met Palin when she was the mayor of Wasilla, a small town in Alaska. Treadwell said that she has long been open-minded about the need for technology to solve problems.



"We're a natural energy economy and you can't drill on- or offshore without bringing the best technology, like 3D seismic technology to find areas for drilling, directional drilling to exploit it, and satellites. She's supportive of new tech," Treadwell said.



Palin's father-in-law was at one time staff officer at the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation, the state's seed capital fund for technology. According to Treadwell, she was critical of her incumbent Republican rival Frank Murkowski in 2006 when he shut the foundation down. In her inaugural address as governor, she emphasized the value of research into science and technology.



Despite Alaska's absence of a big tech industry, the state's chief industries, oil and gas, as well as some telecommunications, require cutting-edge technology. Treadwell said that in discussions with Palin about balancing development vs. the environment, she typically points to technology as a solution.



In her time as governor, he said she has created a Climate Change Sub-cabinet with two advisory groups, examining how to mitigate and adapt to climate change as well as research energy issues. That research hasn't happened yet, according to Treadwell. She's also proposed an investment fund of several hundred million dollars to finding new energy solutions that would help Alaskans' reduce their dependence on expensive oil and gas, he said.



"I haven't asked for support for the tech industry, but she has seen the writing on the wall and Alaska's need to diversify its energy supply," Treadwell said.



Other tidbits from her record:

• Palin has voted to improve aviation safety with the use of technology. On April 9, Palin signed a bill for a $4.8 million loan program that helps state aircraft owners that install digital link technology known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, according to the Alaska Journal of Commerce. The technology, which is purportedly 10 times more accurate than radar, uses an ultra-high-frequency radio to send and receive information about other aircraft using the technology. It's supported by the Federal Aviation Administration.



• Last year, Palin made deep cuts in Alaska's budget that affected many local projects, among them several renewable-energy initiatives. Palin's reasoning was to put a cap on cuts, but she vetoed money for a 50-megawatt Fire Island wind project, as well as funds for the Healy Clean Coal Project, a 50-megawatt new-technology coal power plant, according to the Alaska Journal of Commerce.



• In the same budget, Palin upheld a $46.2 million appropriation to finish a 57-mile transmission line to bring surplus hydro power from Lake Tyee to the electricity-hungry Ketchikan, according to the paper.

Freedom of speech is going and gone in the Republic. What will Christians do about this? I hear so many in today's society seperating themselves into sections and sectors. Giving into the status quo's of self-suppression. Like those whom consider themselves to be 'Hispanic' and have no descendants from Spain. The birth of a new Generation calling itself the Hip-Hop Generation. And they are actually applying the standards thereof to what they believe to be a culture. Or even morality.






Having been born in the 70"s. I too was labelized by the world as being a part of 'Generation X'. But today's society is taking on a new labelism 'The Hip-Hop Generation'. Not knowing that Hip-Hop has as much to do with their culture as 'Michal Jordan tennis shoes'. On the streets in my youth, the older people would call us the 'Gymshoe Kidds'. I thought it to only be humorous. But today many tend to believe that all they're culture has to offer is Hip-Hop.






Not understanding that sin entered this world through the corruption of the eargate in Genesis 3:4.And later on affected the eyegate as seen Genesis3:6. By excepting the stigmas society hand feeds us, our eyes tend to affect our moral personalities. We then allow our children to be taught in a manner displeasing to our Heavenly Father. And choose not to give Him the reverence needed for the foundations of parenting and/ or the individualization needed to build personal character. The assurance or self-perception of being the man or woman God created us to be.






Instead we carry these labels around us and tend to take pride in them.....hindering all of the God given talents God has embeded and hand-crafted into each unique individual. Living in the Boxes of garbage music and labelization with no insight or determination for reforming. We become a self-oppressed people. And God truly can't bless mess. Wherever there is bondage man finds himself searching for something that is almost not there at all. Because God stands firmly on liberty and the liberation of His children. He can not truly bless those who refuse to be free. Or search for true morality.





MLK had so much to say about these issues in the Sacredness of Human Personality. I'd like to share that with those who dare to hear.
