TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: Bow Wow

The moment you have been waiting for!

The Top 5 Dead or Alive according to Bow Wow!

Bow Wow has been doing this rap stuff since he was a mere babe of 5 years old under “Uncle” Snoop Dogg. Since then, he’s grown up into a major megastar that has endured for several “rap generations.”

But who were his influences to help his make it to his current position as an artist on Cash Money Records? His choices may shock fans and haters alike.

Look no farther than Bow Wow’s Top 5 Dead or Alive.

The Notorious B.I. G

“When you mention Hip-Hop you think of Big. For a guy to have only two albums and be put at the place he is should only be looked at as amazing. He is undeniable, especially as a lyricist.”

Big L

“He’s just a dope lyricist. He is someone that I have just always respected as an MC. He’s someone I feel gets looked over or overshadowed. He is one of New York’s finest.”

LL Cool J

“He is my idol. Just period. I see a lot of similarities between his career and my career. We both have a strong female fan base. He’s still here. I’m still here. He does movies. I do movies. He got ridiculed a lot for doing girl records but then he came hard when he dropped “I’m Bad.” I feel like “Fresh Azimiz” is my “I’m Bad.”

Tupac

"--

What a lot of people don’t understand is I grew up in HipHop. I feel like I’m the son or the baby brother of HipHop. I feel like that because I got into the game so early. I was young and around Death Row. People talk about Tupac…I was around Pac back in the day. When he was doing the Me Against the World album I actually witnessed him in the booth. I like him for his realness. You can feel his passion in the music. He was motivated and he truly cared about the world.”

Special Ed

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

“He’s always been one of my favorites because of his lyrical ability and the way he put words together. I redid his “I Got It Made” for a mixtape. I have always had a female fan base so I like him because he had that but was still respected as a lyricist. He gained respect but was also a dope lyricist.”

Okay, this seems a bit fake to me.  For one...and correct me if I'm wrong...but "Me Against The World" was recorded BEFORE Tupac's Death Row stint.  How the HELL did a five year old...outside the guidance of Snoop Doggy Dogg, manage to get into the studio and witness Pac record "Me Against The World."  I must be missing something.

I guess Bow Wow is gonna tell us next that HE was the one responsible for introducing Suge Knight and Snoop Dogg to Tupac, right?  Or that he was in the studio the night that Tupac got shot.  LMAO!

I think Bow Wow wants to just get accepted by the Hip Hop community.  Everyone on his list is great, but are those his true influences? The most closely aligned artist with himself would be LL, thought Bow Wow had a much better business formula.  I would think his list would consist of more money whores like himself...

Actually, Bow Wow is correct. Tupac hadn't signed official paperwork to place him on Death Row Records, but Suge bailed him outta jail so that he could record a lot of that album. Sure, he wasn't officially signed to Death Row, but that album was recorded because of Suge Knight.

Wow i'm surprised at his list. I was expecting to see wack-ass lil wayne,  TI or birdman or somethin'  lol. Pretty good list. I'm glad to see Big L recognized. On of the best lyricists to ever pick up a mic. He woulda been so big right now. Back in the day he stood up there with the best of them ect.. Big, Jay, Nas, Pac.....and they all respected him.

I'm a lyricist, so the only reason that I knew of him, livin in Florida, is because I dig in the crates (see what I did there). But it is very sad and super-shitty that Big L's impact didn't reach more people. I don't know how we're gonna do it, but we gotta start teaching these youngs the history of hip-hop. Them thinkin Lil Wayne is the best ever is blasphemous! No disrespect to Wayne, but he ain't got s**ton a Big L, Biggie, Pac, Pun, Kane, Kool G., Scarface, etc....

I'm very surprised about this list & i'm like y'all, i'm surprised he ain't  mentioned snoop but then again we would all expect that.

But to mention Big L & Special Ed, that to me speaks volume (no matter if it is Bow Wow) because of the fact that he knows hip hop. How many cats really in the game has had a career like Bow Wow & been around the true hip hop era of music since he was like 5. I mean we all can hate on Bow Wow, but you have to say he's actually been around the golden ages of hip hop in the 90's in which he did play a minor part in the game.

Big L was killed in '99. They never found who killed him i think. Don't quote me on that one. Whoever tried to kill him was actually after his older brother, but his brother was in jail, so dude went at Big L  instead. Very sad. Yes, he was maaaaad underrated. He came at a time when you had Jay, Nas, DMX, Pun, Pac, deathrow, and that whole era. He was kinda overlooked, but was about to get his just do right before he died. Was gonna sign to ROC-A-FELLA. His wordplay was sick. The orginal punch line king before Lloyd Banks.
History is in session people lol.

Since it seems like this topic turned into an ode to Big L!

My crew be deliverin hot lead when gats are clenched
Rappers I jack and lynch
Nobody can f**k with the way I be killing the s**tin rap events
Big L is the n***a you expect
To catch wreck in any cassette deck
I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet
I'm feeling like Billy Bathgate
My rap style is past great
I love to f**k a b***h from the back and watch her ass shake
I probably got your mommy strung
Niggaz hear me and take more notes than Connie Chung
My clan plans to get Guillianni hung
Never had a gassed head
Got loot cause I stash bread
Try to tax and I'ma beat your fagot ass half-dead
I stomp white cops till the life stops
For a low price hops
Cause my blood is colder than an ice box
On 1-3-9 you don't want a block war
Cause my crew will kill a n***a from the lobby to the top floor
And every time a mack eleven bucks
I'm killing at least seven ducks
I never was a follower of Reverend Butts
The b***h type I dislike, I'm rougher than a fist fight
All chicks ain't shit, ain't no such thing as Miss Right
So we can never be a couple hun
f**k love, all I got for ho's is hard d**k and bubble gum
And clown emcee's I be attacking quick
I'm on some rappin s**tand some car jackin shit
I ran up on this n***a name Mac in a black ac
And put the gat to his cap, click-clack
Sorry jack but get up out of that
My 38 works great, so make a mistake and hesitate
I can't wait to demonstrate this nickel plate
He didn't listen to what I was speakin
He started reaching
So I left him sleepin with his temple leaking

Looks like a decent list, and I was going to say it but look like someone said it already. Pac was affiliated already with Death Row before AEOM, why do you think Suge bailed him out? He was already pretty much on the team, remember he was in the video of Natural Born Killas with Cube and Dre, and he was in the ABove the Rim movie.

As far as Bow WoW knowing him, well, dont see any reason why not,  Bow Wow is in one of Snoops early video's. I think gin and Juice.

Yeah I know he had encounters with the Row before he signed with them...but if you look at those studio sessions from "MATW," they had absolutely nothing to do with Death Row.  Shock G and maybe two others were the only "West Coast" producers.  The rest were cats like Eazy Mo B.  So Bow Wow's story just doesn't add up to me.  Sorry.

Here's your asnwer @ far bottom of paragraph..................

Death

Big L was shot and killed in Harlem on the night of February 15 as he was shot in his head and chest multiple time in 1999. Early implications led man to believe he was killed because of a debt owed by his brother Leroy Phinazee by Gerard Woodley one of Big L's childhood friends who mistakenly thought he was his brother. Woodley was arrested in May for the crime. Woodley was later released and the murder case remains unsolved. Sometime after his release from prison Leroy was murdered on the same street as his brother as he attempting to find out who had killed his younger brother.

Lyrics to I Don't Understand It :
[Verse 1]
There are too many MC's who are overrated
You ask me, they wasn't even supposed to make it
In the rap biz, they don't know what rap is
So give it up, become a actor or a actress
Or a producer, cause you fail to use the
Mic right, so take flight before I bruise ya
For sayin those bull crap wack raps on wax
You need to get smacked, sit back and rip that contract
Hey yo, I'm serious, Big L ain't playin games
I should get foul and buck wild and start sayin names
But deep down inside you know who you are
Your rhymes are not up to par, you fake superstar
And that really gets on my nerve
When a rapper gets the credit that he don't deserve
Goin platinum and don't have no soul
Some rappers are mad nice and don't even go gold
I don't like the way it's goin down
Because it should be the other way around
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
How MC's take this rap game for granted

[Verse 2]
MC's - what's goin on?
I don't understand, man, how rappers cold transform
One minute you're hardcore and raw
That's what you was known for, but not no more
You changed, you rearranged
You're not the same, your raps are blame
That explain why you lost your fame
Used to be on top, then you fell like rain drops
You turned pop, now you no longer gain props
Who's fault is that? Nobody's but your own, black
Used to make fat tracks, jack, but now you're stone wack
So MC's, don't ever step out your range
Remain the same
And only change with the time
Unless you get dropped like a dime
Go for yours like I'm goin for mine
But if you're rough, stay rough, if you're dap, stay dapper
And never try to look or even sound like another rapper
Just fulfill your own needs
Some rappers wore gold chains, and now they're wearin beeds?
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
How MC's take this rap game for granted

[Verse 3]
This is how it should be done
I'm not the one, and my raps is strong like gum
But some MC's grab the mic and sound dumb
Plus slum (How come?) Rap skills they have none
And I wonder how the hell they records sell
They raps are stale and frail
They're forced like fairy tales
Your technique and everything you speak's weak
You got a little airplay because of your beats
Your fame and your name, but your lyrics are lame, black
Step to this and get ran over like train tracks
Your raps border wack, and you went on tour with that
Crap, don't understand it, cause rhyme skills you lack
I got more soul that Nike Airs, givin MC's nightmares
Rappers be frontin hard, and rhymes they don't write theirs
But still call themselves MC's
Please, how could that be?
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
I don't understand it (I don't understand it)
How MC's take this rap game for granted
I don't understand it

This was knowledge that is true to day.. THAT CLASSIC HIP HOP

that's your opinion, and i respect that. i grew up in the 90's, and i know that era was great, but every era is great to the people of it. ask someone older than you, and they will say the 80's. i think most hiphop heads say this era is wack, bcuz the NYC fell off so bad. its not fair. it was alot of bulls**t in the 90's as well. the fact is you got bulls**t, and you got greatness everywhere.  in 2020 we will be saying this era was great, and the new era is wack. thats just how s**tgoes. so in 2020 when you go back and listen to the tip's, and the mixtape weezy it will sound classic. so i don't knock you my dude for saying that. but i'm down with this era, and i think it's good music poppin. its all hiphop to me 90' 80's 00's its all for the time it was made.

Anyone who doesn't put Jay-Z in there top five list is a hater: plan and simple. Though I love Big, I couldn't put him in my top five for the simple fact we didn't get to hear enough material. I personally don't think that Bow Wow knows enough about hip hop to have a top five.. He's pop: always has been and always will be.  I can respect the LL pick, the 2Pac and the Big L  pick,  but Special Ed over greats like KRS One, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim. This lil guy doesn't know hip hop: or better yet, he wasn't around when these legends were here.

I think people are a bit too harsh on Bow Wow, sure he can act like a real goofy prick with his "oh so camp/tough guy" acts on his video blogs but, as far as his top 5 it's pretty much the type of list that you would expect from someone over 30-35 not a man of his age so, I guess what he listens to during his down time is pretty solid.

For the doubters, remember Lupe Fiasco's "ATCQ" incident? Remember what he said about never hearing or listening to Midnight Marauders? I guess it can swing both ways, we Hip Hop heads can get a little too precious sometimes but, I will personally give Bow Wow some credit on this one, although it don't mean I'd buy one of his records.

Racist comments, that are sometimes posted, aside, that is the most ignorant thing I've ever seen written on this site in all the years I've been on here.

How many classical musicians that are alive today were when Chopin and Beethoven were alive? Does that mean they shouldn't listen to or be influenced by their compositions?

Hip hop has a wealthy back catalogue which should never stop being explored, cause if it does the essence will die.
