TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: illseed

Straight up, I like ill MC's The rappers that I have always gravitated to were the dudes that made me think, "I wish I thought that" or "How the hell did he think of that?" When I crafted my list, that is what I had in mind, my favorite ill MC's. Certainly there are the standard greats from every era (Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and others like Drake - kidding!), but these are the illest that I like.

    In no particular order:

    Q-Tip

I think I want to start with Q-Tip. Q-Tip is a brother than is definitely underrated in terms of people appreciating his talents. But he fronted one of the best Hip-Hop groups of all times. Furthermore, I have to get him props for offering me and alternative to the normal rough neck rap. Still Tip could rap right along side a rapper such as Busta Rhymes or a newer dude like Lil Wayne. He wasn't a battle rapper, but he held his own for years, solo and with Tribe. On top of it all, you can see his influence in rappers to this day.

    Ol' Dirty Bastard

I know this might get some flack, but I really do love these dudes. And not because they passed away. They were the cream of the crop and tragically were taken from us too early. But, ODB was my favorite Wu Tang Member and he's certainly gave the Clan a different look. In fact, he gave them that national crossover look, along with Meth. But, ODB had no limits and he would say lyrics like "I keep planets in orbit" that were so ill and so outrageous. But, he was more than just a zany rapper, he was sharp and offered a great style to complement his lyrics. I still listen to both of his solo albums as well as his material with the Wu.

    Sticky Fingaz of Onyx

Now, this brother is definitely one of the best, but went left when he probably should have gone right. But, still he's one of the illest and that holds true to this day. Lyrically, not a lot of dudes can get with Sticky. He truly held Onyx down and I loved how he would anchor just about every song. I hate "what if" scenarios, but I have to say it. If Sticky had opted to go to Aftermath instead of his own situation with Universal, he would likely be standing next to somebody like Eminem right now. It could be said that Stick bodied Eminem on "Remember Me?" from the MMLP! His solo album was criminally overlooked and classic in the eyes of many.

    Eminem

Time tends to wear down the mind and people tend to forget what people have accomplished in their life and that long path they have traveled. So, lets take a trip back to that Slim Shady EP. Before Dr. Dre and all the Interscope hype. Eminem was an ill White kid from the Detroit Area. Dude was spazzing at all the battles, he did work with artists over at Rawkus, the Outsidaz and he actually made his own way until he got the attention of one Andre Young. Now, through the years, Eminem has continued to represent all that is great (and probably horrible) in Hip-Hop, but he's always done it lyrically and creatively. His Marshall Mathers LP can pretty much stand against any album in the Hip-Hop history and he's got a pretty impressive catalog.

    Busta Rhymes

Now, Busta Rhymes is a bit of a different dude on this list. I typically gauge rappers off of their albums, but with Busta, I don't. I look at him as the master of "showing up." I don't think you can name an appearance that Busta showed up to and didn't kill it. You can put him on just about any track, from any region with any tempo and he's going to kill it. Now, that's what being an emcee is all about. Furthermore, it is highly likely that Busta is going to steal the show - and I mean the live show. The other part about Busta I want to mention is that he's always been a larger than life character, from his personality to his clothing to his musical style. Furthermore, Busta has managed to stay relevant for so long that it puts him in the same world as other greats like Jay, Nas and LL Cool J.

    THE SIDE BAR....

Shout out to Scarface. Shout out to Big Pun. Shout out to Will Smith. Shout out to Ghostface. Shout out to Andre 3000. Shout out to Hip-Hop.

Not the greatest but truly underrated. (Except EM...LOL) Nice try big homie.

    Nothing wrong with this list.

Its like Wheel of fortune...after everyone kept saying RSTLN they starte to give you those and asked you to pick others. So after we go through PAC,BIG,JAY,NAS,???

then we have the real fabric of hip hop that kept it consistant and just good enough to be better than the sucker emcees. I think it all depends on where your from. In Germany theres a dude that does the MFdoom thing or Solar in france, I konw people that would put them up on there top stan list. these top whatever list depends on where you grew up and what you had access too.

Your list was solid other than sticky...IMO...you got top shelf MCs on here...nothing to complain about...
I riding with you 100% on ODB, niggas who say he wasnt ill never even bothered to listen FOR REAL or just go off what everybody else says...dirty IS the Wu...he was crunk before crunk even had a name! get real...
"I keep planets in orbit" wasnt no drunken babble either, it was 5% slang...you know like 360 degrees...as in completion...
Just like his name Ason Unique...all %5 talk...
Dirty was over MAAAAD niggas heads....thats what that is...

I have never responded to anyone’s Top 5 but yours demands it. This is a list you simply have to respect. It is your list to write and everyone has their own opinion. The artists on the list are very diverse and all were very creative and innovative. The side bar even has a twang to it! (Face) Big ups Illseed. While reading the list, I got the felling I was watching Brown Sugar the movie. All the love for hip hop as a music returned.  (No Homo)

*No disrespect to Sticky or ODB, but I seriously doubt if those 2 would even make my top 20 "MC LYRICISTS"
*30 years of Hip-Hop and ALL MC'z that emerged to date.

*Props for throwin' Q-Tip up in there. (We've seen Busta and Em on plenty of lists.) This lists def'ly stands out though! Not what I expected from "ILLSEED", but def'ly see ya "vibe" now!

Sticky AND Busta are top tier ill MCs. How can you even question that? Busta's new album, is not his best, but dude puts in WORK.  you gotta be kiddin me...and sticky messed up at the universal / aftermath crossroads but he's ill to to this day. his onyx work alone had him head and shoulders abv most rappers of the time. people used to say they changed and all that, but lyrically, i like dude.

    q-tip...no questions
ODB died too soon, but while he was here....cccccrazy...even his second CD.

    1 more thing...
Why is everybody so confused about Busta Rhymes?
Its not like hes wack? if so since when? Bust Been bringin it since PTA/LONS days, thats OVER 15yrs when most cats is 1 and done...how in the world do you get confused about that?
This is why record sells are down the way they are!
People scared to step out their pigeon hole and let the music be the music. We already know about Rakim, KRS, Kane, etc etc THERE ARE other people though...
everybody stuck on that #1 dude and cant wait to forget about #2, 3 4 and 5 niggas...
If we stayed stuck that Kane/Rakim is the illest nobody is fuckin with them, cats like a busta rhymes or De la soul wouldve never blown up...how bad would that have been if we was thinking with our heads up our ass in the late 80's early 90's like niggas do nowadays? riiight....
wouldnt be a top 5 list.....
You new niggas need to get out of your own way....
Its like if lil wayne or whoever is your #1, then whos your #2? lol
We can do these list all year long and its always gonna be a discussion for us...thats what the 90's means...thats what REAL hip hop is...shit doesnt have a freshness date...cant say that shit for niggas in 2020...you tear shit down before it even gets a chance to develop...this is why I think niggas get confused about names like Busta or Q Tip and think illseed is the one buggin...

plus you gotta break these list up into catergories...just to be fair...
You really cant compair scarface/DOOM/Dre 3000 in 1 list...just sayin...

Finally a list that doesnt include the obvious....Seed I got to give you some props on this list you are going to catch flak but guess what??...its YOUR list...I would agree with everyone on the list but I must say even though ATCQ is my favorite group and Q-tips Album Renaissance is a classic he lost some points with me with that Vivrant Thang and Breathe and Stop. I mean I expected him to go left and to me he sold his soul with them shyts....even though they were club bangers why would he make some bullshyt like that??....Other than that Tip gets Love cause of his production classics as well. Busta I been telling cats dude is maaaaaad slept on. What other Emcee besides LL comes out every year with a banger or three and sounds fresh like he just got in the game?? I would of probably took Sticky Fingaz out I was never really a Onyx cat but nevertheless nice list.

and jigga CANT fuck with em in a battle...hence Eminem calling him out time and time again in that 04-05 range and jay-z not saying SHIT back...some subliminal, some pretty obvious, jay doesnt wanna get beat by Em, he feels lucky he got outta that shit with Nas with no solid decision

Em's the best alive by far...its not hard since there are only like 5 rappers alive that TRY to be 'good' and not lean wit it rock wit it

pretty good list overall, i was tellin my brother even tho its dead or alive, i think that you gotta completely take pac n big outta the picture...they are pretty much a given for EVERYONE's top 5...so that makes everybody's list top 3 which sucks when almost half the spots are solidified in a top 5...start naming the top 7 and just leave out Pac n Big...

and get outta here with fuckin KRS and these BS dudes gettin on a top dead or alive just cuz they were the first ones to do it...its not a list of who is illest in their time period, yet we think that since they were the first they get a slot, gtfoh...like i said before, its like saying Bob Cousy would take Kobe Bryant to school...AINT HAPPENIN...yeah cousy was a great in his time, but he wouldnt start on any team in the NBA now...krs one has dudes that weren't even born when he was 'ill' that could whip his ass in a battle on that lyrical shit

Thats what so great about opinions. Each EMCEE listed has to be given serious consideration. I like the fact he put Sticky Fingaz (Queens Stand Up) in there. The Black Trash album is probably the best 'conceptual' album ive ever heard. And Busta is MAD underrated! Q-Tip as well. Nuff Respect......

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i feel what you're saying, but i just dont see it.... Busta has had his moments in hip hop, but all i see is a washed up artist that continues to co-sign the latest bullshit trends in hip hop.... he went from Leaders of the New School, to the "Looney Tunes"/Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See years, to the Captain Steroid era and now he's in his "Dopeboy" mode....

he hops on songs that are "hot" at the time, despite the fact they are temporarily crippling/crippled hip hop.... i'll never forget that "Laffy Taffy" remix he did.... as a pioneer of hip hop, thats just inexcusable for him to co-sign that....

as far as Sticky is concerned, i'll admit that i should withold my judgement on him, because i havent listened to a full album yet.... the first one im going to check out when i get off work is "Blacktrash: The History of Kirk Jones".... hopefully, it wont disappoint....

"Your mama name Peter, papa name Cita

That was an original list! As long as there is justification on why they were picked. Most individuals pick their list based on popularity or album sales. That is no indication of dopeness!!

    My list would be:

A.Z. (Anthony Cruz) On Nas' level without the commercial success

Kool G Rap (Nas is a combination of Rakim and Kool G)

C.L. Smooth (No wack verses ever- listen to "straighten it out")

Scarface (a lyricist, not just a southern lyricist- Lyricist)

Buckshot Shorty (not the first to sing/rap but definitely one of the earliest "got'cha open RMX")

All of these artist continue to record with very strong material that does not cross over into sales. Sad but true! Everyone claims to be real but in reality people want a fantasy life- most of today's music allow an escape from their reality which is most likely mediocre.

If your gonna base your choices on record sales then add Vanilla Ice and Hammer to your list!!!

YESSSSS! It is about time someone finally mentioned Sticky Fingaz!! Sticky is one of the best ever at knowing HOW to use his voice... And he's always been original, from his flows, delivery, to the sh*t he talks about. His debut solo was definitely slept on, and he kinda did slip after that, but the 1st 3 Onyx albums(especially "Shut 'Em Down), and his debut solo are enough to have him in this list.
I also always bring up that point about him turning down Aftermath. When "Get Rich.." came out, I used to say, "Man, Sticky must be watching MTV and saying 'That should've been me!'"

Props on Em too. Because, content aside, whether you can relate or not, when it comes to actually "rapping" and how to rap, putting words together, flippin flows, coming up with rhyme patterns and schemes, Em does it better than anybody.... ever.

I heard all of Eminems shit and that guy is thee farthest thing away from the greatest rapper alive...thats complete bullshit to me...
but people feel that way...cool...I know I gave Em a chance though...from Infinite all the way to his new 1...Ive yet to be blown away by him on ANY track...but thats just me...
everybody doesnt feel the same about a scarface, 3 stacks, Jay Z or spice 1 like you or I do...It is what it is man...
Half the niggas on here recognize ODB for his brilliance, the other half acting like Dirty was horrible! cool. Thats on you, but its also like where the fuck you from man? Brooklyn Zoo sucked? LOL...yeah in 2009 on the internet in your little bubble it sucked...
half you niggas co sign fruity shit anyway so I could care less about your new niggas opinions and taste in ANYTHING...

    Great List Illseed.

    all these artists are originals.

    For Busta

he is in a league of his own.
    He is off competition.
    Can't nobody touch him.

    Q-Tip

    Great voice and creative head.
    His music is creative without
feeling gay at all like some
    creative artists nowadays.
    Yes speaking of Kanye, etc.

    ODB

People who don't know his music
shut up. This man is the reason
why the WU was big. After he
went to jail and they began
recording without him it was a
    wrap. That's like Chuck without
Flav. You need that crazy factor
    for greatness. The other Wu
rappers are all great MCs but
    they are craftsmen not artists.
    Everything Dirty did was art.
Even if it might have not even
    always been his intention.

    Good Job Illseed

    Keep rockin.

Damn Illseed, much respect to the list; I was just about to give up on you after the "Why Rick Ross is winning" and "Alfamega: yall aint gonna do shit" editorials. But this top 5 shows to me that you are as much a student of the game as a gossip nigga lol, props. Here is my list in order:

    1. Busta Rhymes
    2. Eminem
    3. Redman
    4. Bun B
    5. Snoop Dogg

so it appears that we have very similar tastes in MC's no homo. Most of the niggas on here scratching they head over the Busta pick prolly haven't seen him live: dude RIPS it. But perhaps my biggest criteria for favorite MC's is stacking vocals, or lack thereof. To me, being a dope MC means you can pick up a mic at ANYTIME and rip it like you would in the studio, without voice equalizers and whatnot. Just your voice and dope lyrics, and that's it. But anyways, much respect Ill, you totally redeemed yourself in my eyes lol.

I have to apologize for talking to you not for this list, you nincompoop.
    here is your list (georgee):

    Top five my list ok
    1.Jay Z
    2.LL COOL j
    3.Biggie
    4.Pac
    5.Rakim
    -------------------------------
this is the safest, most generic list EVER created on the face of EARTH. Get the hell out of here. I could create an alternate generic list to go against yours. Take out jay, add nas...take off rakim, put up Kane, keep pac and biggie, b/c THATS THE MOST BASIC, TYPICAL MOVE EVER and put somebody with longevity like Jay back on for LL. WHOA...you blew everybody away.

My list of MCs can take yours lyric for lyric and most of them dont have the body of work of your list so thats a mighty claim on MY PART. WORD... even sticky fingaz and ODB!!! eminem, you already know and his recent ass in face situation has nothing to do with his raps.  WAKE UP. You  been watching too much VH1 behind the music, boy.

is only me thinking it? or do people get
conservative here. The list is great and
It's you personal one. Not everybody
    having the same taste.
But when it comes to creativity and
    uniqueness, your list is straight.

None of those you mentioned can
be 100% copied. Asher Roth tried to
copy EM, but he badly failed.

Nobody in the world could copy ODB
rap like Busta. They all truly originals.

And I say it again. The WU without ODB
    is like PE without Flav.

A good MC is not only a craftsman
who is good ad assembling rhymes.

A good MC must also be able to enternain
and needs a larger than life personailty.

That's why people will still listen to
Bob Marley in two hundred years,

but Jay-Z will be forgotten in 20.

if illseed really thought eminem raps was all that he would never have to apologize for him like this.

your card pulled seed.  never put money over art.
    -------------------------
what are you pontificating about now? nobody apologized for eminem and nobody puts money over art. you u read or what? I said people need to remember an artist full body of work - not just their LAST album.
    ----------------------

pontificating thats a SAT word right there lol.

1st if eminem 'body of work' stand on its own then why refer to him as: "Eminem was an ill White kid"?  thats already moving away from his "work" to both giving him a pass for weaker raps & commercially patronizing a market.

it is absolutely no way you can support eminem is in the 5 best or greatest or illest rappers of all time.

2nd you promoted mccain for president ads on your page.  if that isnt putting money over art i dont know what is.

i dont remember eminem LAST album cuz i didnt pay it no mind.  or the one before that.

the dude got skill for nothing.  he about nothing.  & he will soon be forgotten.

On the first of two tracks purportedly recorded in 1993, an audibly young Slim Shady raps, "All the girls I like to bone have big butts/ No they don't, 'cause I don't like that n----- sh--/ I'm just here to make a bigger hit." The second track featured Eminem rapping about a black girlfriend he broke up with. "Blacks and whites, they sometimes mix/ But black girls only want your money, 'cause they're dumb chicks," he rhymes. Later in the freestyle Em raps, "Never date a black girl, because blacks only want your money/ And that sh-- ain't funny."

The first track was only a few lines long, but the second track went on for several minutes with Em seemingly rhyming off the top of his head repeatedly saying he did not like black girls and that they were only out to get money. Both tracks sounded amateurish.

Eminem’s early collaborators aren’t afraid to talk to The Source and the story that emerges is a far cry from what you’ll see in his Academy Award-winning movie “8 Mile.” As The Source Editor-in-Chief Kim Osorio notes in the cover story on Eminem, “Understanding Marshall Mathers’ past – his life before the Black community accepted him – explains how a rapper of his caliber could have something like the racist recording hidden in his closet.” On tracks recorded in 1993 by Eminem’s four-man, all-White rap crew, under the title “The Racist Rap Hour with Bassmint Productions,” with the Eminem’s four-man, all- Wwhite collectivewhich were known as Bassmint Productions and leaked to The Source by three White Hip-Hop fans from Detroit who were associates of Eminem in from the early ’90s, Eminem calls Black women “dumb chicks” and opposes dating Black women “cause I don’t like that nigger shit.” On a third song, newly discovered by The Source, Eminem calls Black people “moon crickets,” “spear chuckers” and “porch monkeys.” ”

The feature on Eminem’s hidden past – where one of his old rhyming partners tells all about The Racist Rap Sessions of 1993 – and an interview with one of the White Hip-Hop fans from Detroit who drove across the country in order to bring Eminem’s racist tracks to light anchor the package on racism. Features editor Jerry Barrow weighs in with an essay on race; Hip-Hop players from Irv Gotti to Suge Knight to Crazy Legs speak their minds on the controversy; and Benzino asserts that The Source is “the last line of defense” against the forces that will destroy Hip-Hop: greedy record labels, mainstream media with a “double standard” towards race and rappers like Eminem who threaten to completely co-opt an African-American art form. Benzino’s statements are backed up in “The Making of a Hip-Hop Monopoly”, which outlines exactly how with a detailed diagram, corporate control of radio, retail, distribution and a concentration of major recording artists under one record label (Interscope) has marginalized independent artists and stolen Hip-Hop from the Black and Latino communities that gave birth to it. The power of Interscope to bias the media, and influence recording artists is further demonstrated by Russell Simmons reactions to the release of the racist tracks in “Politics as Usual: Russell Simmons’s Comments.”

February’s issue culminates The Source’s yearlong investigation of forces corrupting Hip-Hop, which began in March 2003 with a package, “Hip-Hop Under Attack.” Among the other shocking revelations in this month’s issue“The Real Slim Shady”:

    • Between 1988 and 1993, Eminem formed an all-White rap collaborative known as Bassmint Productions that produced “The Racist Rap Hour with Bassmint Productions.” Fellow MCEminem’s rhyming partner in Bassmint Productions, White MC Chaos Kid, provides The Source with an exclusive interview where who was therehe describes first- hand how thesethe racist recordings were made and why he refused to be a part of themit.describes first-hand how these recordings were made and why he didn’t participate saying,

    • Eminem tried to cover up other racist recordings held by Bbrothers DJ Butterfingers and Manix, both partthe other members of Bassmint Productions, which have yet to surface. Chaos Kid saidsays Eminem “asked Manix to destroy it.”“I refused to even get on it… I didn’t feel comfortable about being a part of [it], so I didn’t rap on it.”

    • Eminem hid his racist tracks from his first Black producer and record label owner, Champtown, who was responsible for introducing Eminem to Detroit’s Black Hip-Hop community and who helped shape him to be the superstar he is today. Champtown was shocked to hear some of Eminem’s racist tracks for the first time in 2000. “I definitely heard some tapes with Slim [using] words like ‘moon crickets’ and shit like that on it. And there was ‘spear chucker’ on it… and ‘porch monkeys,’” said Champtown.

    • Champtown and Eminem’s older friends dispute Eminem’s claim that his breakup with an “African-American girlfriend” is what caused him to record “Foolish Pride” where he rants, “Black girls are bitches” among other things. Said Champtown, “I don’t believe it. He was with Kim for the whole time I knew him. I never knew him to date any Black women.” Chaos Kid doesn’t remember his Black girlfriend either: “This whole story about him going out with a Black girl – I don’t know.”

    • Brothers DJ Butterfingers and Manix, both part of Bassmint Productions have much more unreleased Eminem material. Chaos Kid said “[Eminem] asked Manix to destroy it.”

    • Members of Detroit’s Hip-Hop community view Eminem’s management as racist. Of Paul Rosenberg, who has managed Eminem since 1998, Champtown says, “I feel that Paul Rosenberg is prejudiced. I heard from inside the camp about how Blacks are being underpaid…I know who introduced [Rosenberg] to Eminem and he is no longer on the map. He was fired. He was the last Black survivor with any authority in the camp and he was fired recently.”

    • Chaos Kid says, “To me he’s reached a point where he’s put the dollar before his conscience, and unfortunately, it is going to be his downfall.”

This comprehensive examination of racism in Hip-Hop also features comments from Hip-Hop players fromleading entrepreneurs, artists, scholars and activists such as Irv Gotti, Mack 10, to Suge KnightDr. Michael Eric Dyson toand Crazy Legs sounding off on Eminem and racism;, an interview with one of the White Hip-Hop fans from Detroit who drove across the country in order to bring Eminem’s racist tracks to light;, and an insightful essay on perceptions of race and racism across three generations of one African-American family by fFeatures eEditor Jerry Barrow. In addition, in a wide-ranging and frank interview, Benzino, who was the first person to stand up and question racist and monopolistic practices in Hip-Hop, faces down those who have attacked him and explains how these latest discoveries vindicate his beliefs. VH 1 specials, MTV and “8 Mile” would have you believe that Eminem grew up in one of Detroit’s poor Black neighborhoods. The reality is Eminem went to Lincoln High School, a predominately White school in Warren, Michigan that was known as “War-n-tucky for its reputation as a hotbed of racism.”
