DVD REVIEW: Ghostride The Whip (The Story of the Hyphy Movement

By Francesca Djerejian
Ghostride the Whip tells the real story behind hyphy’s historic evolution and diverse cultural expressions through its unsung hero, Vallejo rapper and underground legend Mac Dre. Directed by DJ Vlad, the film showcases artists at the forefront of Hyphy’s rise to popularity, such as Bay ambassador E-40 and ‘hyphy’ terminologist Keak da Sneak, who have the late Bay Area rapper to thank for championing the hyphy movement before it even had an official name.

Narrated by Sway, the film traces hyphy back to the Bay Area’s rich history as a center of nonconformity. It chronicles the southern slave migration, the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party, and the reign of drug dealers and pimps in the crack era.  Ghostride the Whip shows the influence of Bay Area pimps such as Fillmore Slim in the music of Oakland rapper Too $hort.   In the local underground, the charismatic Mac Dre embraced the Bay’s unique Hip-Hop culture, which included early hyphy music, turf dancing and car sideshows.  Footage borrowed from local DVD series such as Sideways of Bay Area natives “driving crazy” puts the more popular images of ghostriding to shame.

The documentary unravels the tragic story of Mac Dre. Mac was close associate of Vallejo’s infamous Romper Room Gang, who became notorious in the early 1990s for pizza parlor stickups and 50 armed bank robberies. In the film, Romper Room member, J-Diggs recollects how Dre’s association with the Rompers brought police scrutiny, harassment, and false conspiracy charges that culminated in a five-year jail sentence.  Neither a snitch nor a coward, Dre did the time and recorded entire albums from prison, releasing songs such as “Punk Police” that openly ridiculed the authorities.

Upon his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre shifted his music in a celebratory direction, establishing a diverse following that spread beyond the West Coast.  As MC Hammer puts it in the film, Mac Dre was “a step away from being embraced by the nation.”  But like fellow Oakland-born rapper Tupac, Dre was not without enemies. Dre became a martyr for the Bay Area Hip-Hop community when he was murdered on the way home from a concert in Kansas City. Mac Dre's death helped bring about a surge in hyphy’s popularity.

Mainstream attention has resulted in some diverse interpretations of Hyphy, and Ghostride delves into these at some length. While the attention given to crossover knockoffs is less compelling then other parts of the storyline, it nonetheless offers some choice comic moments. More importantly, the film succeeds in revealing the essence of the Hyphy movement through the tale of its folk hero, Mac Dre.

Mac Dre is the flyest rapper to ever exist.  He had the dopest flow and some of the most creative raps I have ever heard.  The ghost riding you see on tv is like E-40 said "Sugar coated and watered down" those guys are fucking crazy.  You got to see it.

Oh yeah, Tupac wasn't born in Oakland he was born in Brooklyn, but he grew up in Marin city(Bay area) and Oakland.

OK!!! so check this out, it's been n hot minute since I posted anything on here, but if it's a bay deal i'm all over it with my 2 cents...I think this is good for the bay, anything to keep an eye on the bay is good, I'm telling you these guys in the bay aren't giving up so easy this time around...there is a lot of youthful hunger to keep the  bay in the limelight, the only thing is that there is so many dudes out there trying to be rappers just because and for the attention that it brings that it's making it look hella watered down, that's when peeps stop giving love to the bay because they keep hearing a lot of bullshit music coming from out there and not really getting the real experience of how versetile the bay music is compared to the rest of the country...THIZZ just dropped 2 new cd's from mac dre with music that is fresh, and most definetly a lot of new music...they actually put out two versions of the album (Welcome_To_Thizz_World_V2.1 and 2.2) I'm telling you that if you want to understand were all this hyphy music came from you gotta listen to those 2 albums, I have listened to both album versions and I think they did a very good job at putting it together v2.1 is more on the gangsta side of music from mac dre and v2.2 is more on the hyphy side, they have some crazy ass beats to go with his crazy lyrics like usual...anyway I just really wanted to emphesize about this so you peeps that would like to understand it better, this is a good chance to with these 2 cd's they just put out... yo' Illseed I wanted to give the challenge to see if u can get these cd's review by allhiphop, I have hardly ever seen any bay area music get reviewed for the sake of music and creativity, I think these are 2 good cd's to review and give a bigger insight into the bay music and what the bay is really about when it comes to artistry that these guys put so much time to do and put it out there for the REAL and always LOYAL bay area music fans... trust me I can say this because I have been on the bay area music hype ever since the first time I heard RBL, IMP, MAC DRE, E40, SAN QUINN,JT and all them guys we grew up listening to in the 90's...

I definitely have to co-sign what pworldrydah925 said:  if you aren't from Norcal, it's almost impossible to understand the significance and influence of Mac Dre.  There are so many different era's of Mac Dre and each of the era's complete and add to his legacy.  There's the pioneer late 80's early 90's Dre where he was putting the V on the map.  Then there was the prison era in the early 90's with all the phone recorded verses.  Then there was the post prison era from the mid to late 90's where he started putting himself back on the map.  And of course, the era everyone is familiar with, when he moved to Sac in 2001, it was a wrap.  Mac Dre became the king of Norcal, by far.  He could go to any hood in any city in Norcal and be respected.  So much of his music, as dope as it is, could only be understood by people from Norcal, because the slang and inside jokes are a part of the culture.  Bottom line is, if you weren't there, it's real hard to appreciate what he meant and still means to us.  Not just rhyming, which he was cold at, and one of the funniest rappers ever, but he was extra cool and loved his fans.  Also, I don't think any rapper has brought so many different races together like Mac Dre.  Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of negatives that came from what he promoted, but I am just taking this time to speak on the positives that he brought about.  I hope this DVD does him justice.  I also have to agree that when Hus gets out, he's gonna take over the bay just like Dre did.  It's already lining up like that.  Hus is following in Dre's footsteps.
