@ Maine Man Rappers Delight came out in '79 and Rapture came out in Jan. 81 so you are right, however, Rapture was the first rap inspired track to top the charts, then The Brakes which was the second to be certified gold....I am assuming Rapture is labeled as the first rap song because it was the first to go gold.....back to the subject at hand, maybe many artists aren't contributing because they don't know about it?!? See, the Pioneers need to hire Paris and get him to help them put together a business model to purchase the building and regain on their investment.

Even if it means rehousing the resdents and turning it into a hip hop museum.

They really need to think about regenerating the area, and keeping it alive that the residents can benifit from it also.

Think how many stars hip hop has had, how much parafanallia they could collect from od school artists, they could hold workshops/seminars and have walk through time exhibitions with video halls or some shit, where they could see a visual transition of hip hop.

They could also get rappers to authorise the re-print of classic tour T-Shirts each month, so it stays fresh.

Somebody need to fly me out there to talk to these cats, they coud turn that block into one of the must see things in New York.

Damn, throw a reaturant in there too, serving Milky Cereal for breakfast, have a Mr Goodbar Vending Machine and give out Pink Cookies in plastic bags at the Exit ;)

Piece of trivia for everyone. There is a mainstream rap track that precedes "Rapper's Delight." It was done by a popular funk band called Fatback. The name of the song is called "King Tim III." It is officially the first time Hip-Hop was ever put on record. It was a released just a few weeks before "Rapper's Delight."

But in another twist, "Rappers Delight" was copyrighted on August 25, 1979, beating out "King Tim III's" date of August 29, 1979.

i don't doubt that you may have a deep understanding and appreciation for the culture, but don't discount the knowledge of "most" black people because what you think you know about the culture.in addition to that, Black people have made several major contributions to music PERIOD, and everyone was not raised listening to hip hop. therefore there are many people who may not know as much about hip hop as others, because they may have been raised listening to reggae, jazz, gospel, etc. Black people are not limited to hip hop by any means, but HIP HOP is another jewel of Black/Brown culture. Its style is infectious, as most of our contributions are, and people all over the world love it and appreciate it because of the meaning and lifestlye that it encompasses.

As far as the building goes, beyond it being made into a museum, how about the people who will be forced out because they cant afford the hike in rent that is about to take place? same thing is happening in Harlem. but who knows about that? wish the Clintons would fight for the rights of those being victimized by the greed and bullying by the upper class, being that Bill is the Harlem-ite who started the gentrification movement.

Beyond that, you nor anyone else for that matter is any better than someone from the projects. the children in the pj's/ghettos didnt ask to be there, so do they deserve to deal with being put out? there are people who are orphans, living in single parent households, or plain and simple werent born with the financial security that others have. if you are at all a hip hop fan or even a conscious citizen, you would be familiar with the disparities of wealth both globally and nationwide.dont get it twisted, many are grinding to get out, and while some are complacent, most project residents are not there by choice. like most of the MC's and rappers who have made a name for themselves, some of us were born with rags and aim to gain riches, but that doesnt happen over night. As a moderate(politically), i dont believe in handouts, but definitely believe in human rights, and do not promote people's livelihood being threatened over a buy out. as far as the 80's, thats too deep to get into, you are talking about the climax of the drug trade in our community, EVERYONE was not swimming in dollars, and capitalism has victimized pools of people.

chill with your internet thuggery, apparently you dont know the true grind. if you are so anti-projects, dont listen to hip hop! side bar...most of the greats in any industry, black/white/other have come from the slum/ghetto/impoverished communities. as Jay Electronica would say "so what you sayin'?"

But most of yall are just mentioning the newer artists. Most of them aint start rapper because what they seen back in the days. they aint concerned with that. I from down south and i cant speak for everybody, but i been listening to hip hop since i cant remember, i was born in 1980 but i didnt know it originated there. Why aint nobody mentioning the people that was actually doing something back then, people like Russel Simmons, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, LL CooL J, ect... they made a big profits back then and still amking them now. Russel simmons can easily clear that 5 mill. I can see if this was like 70 years from the origination and most of them was dead. But them same people still living and if they dont care about it, then why you expect someone who basically just starrted rapping to care?

I think them Old Heads have an obligation more than anything.
They quick to say hip hop is dead now. THEY pulling the plug.

Seriously, I think alot of you "real Hip-Hop heads" just wanna argue. Meatwad, I think you came a little heavy with the whole "fuck that shit" approach from the jump, but I feel you on basically 99% of your position. We all have a responsibility to Hip-Hop on some level, but if the first place you worked at was going out of business, would you be putting up money to get it out the red? I don't think so. The projects, just like all other government-funded assistance programs is intended as a stepping stone to get your money up and move out, not a god damn retirement community! I grew up in the P's too. It's not like people are thirst to stay there. This might be a good look for them in the bigger picture. Call it forced motivation, lol. But seriously, I do think Hip-Hop should set-up a museum in the BX somewhere near 1520 Sedgwick. Long story short....times have changed and people have more money so now there really isn't a such thing as a strong "Black community", just rich Blacks and poor ones and a bunch of fuckers who do nothing but talk about change but can't even help themselves. If it was any other race that building would have been bought back already considering its historical value. So much for unity....

agrees with MOB4L, look at all these "historical landmarks" of non hip-hop relevance, that continue to exist despite no occupancy or actual function at all.....

here we have a Building that actually had residents, and is responsible for the birth of the most impactful genre of current world culture, and those who benefitted from it financially would rather spend the money on snatchery/jewelry, than to preserve this historic part of Hip-Hop's ever evolving legacy...

just goes to show how unappreciative people with paper and prestige can be unless it directly affects their financial motive and personal interests......

we all dropped the ball on this as a culture and community....

I totally agree with meatwad....

preventative measures are always the best thing. now I am all for keeping history and culture alive, but is it that actual house that is hip hop? nope.... if we as a people started handeling our business better then we wouldnt have this problem.

say what you will but keep in mind I wasnt born with a silver spoon, I went through more stuff than most of you could imagine, but there comes a time when you have to look at your past, present and future and realize what are priorities and what things are truly important. a house ... in a time when our countries business are lost is the wrong thing to think about. those who are claiming that we need to hold on to it are in my opinion "time pack rats" holding on to things for what reason ... because of a couple memories? lets be real here.... how many of us knew anything about this house before this article? Im in hip hop and i had no idea that it existed. that house never put one song down, that house never paid my bills, that house never did anything except generate a bll and now more stress for whoever lived in it.

open your minds I see what and why people are wanting to save it, now look around you and see why it doesnt matter. culture is not because f a building is it?

I don't have time to read everyone comments but this some major bullshit what is happening. yes some or all major artist should get together and buy this historic property and, I don't know maybe put a hall of fame there I'm sure Kayne would love to cry over why his is on the 3rd floor not the 5th. but this building will show the weakness in hip hop. If the fans can't even agree and have a positive discussion on something this important. Then there is no hope for hip hop maybe it is just a fad...............................

Fact is, it takes MORE than the asking price to buy this property; it takes additional monies to fund/maintain, etc. no different than any other Historical Site.

And it's not just one home that can be setup as a museum; people still LIVE here. Who funds THEM?

No one rapper is gonna give up their small amount of guap to keep this alive; projects like this require constant funding. The Jimmy Iovine's, the Doug Morris', the David Geffens, etc. wouldn't miss this money.

Ever heard of Ebenezer Baptist Church? Or maybe the SCLC building? Or Auburn Avenue for that matter?

I knew about this place more than half a year ago...they've been talking about it for quite some time. The residents there had their own website where you could make donations to help them buy the building back. The building ain't even worth that much cause some of these hip hop moguls got several times the money that building is only worth ($7.5 million). We could've saved it, but we as a people always have a million and one reasons why NOT to do something productive for our own community...and then wonder why the rest of the world is so quick to NOT take us seriously. It starts with self. In regards to culture, sometimes all you NEED is a crummy old building. We're descendants of slaves and therefore have a history of others telling us that anything related to us is irrelevant to the point where we subconciously agree. Our surroundings can change rapidly but our mentality will take much longer. I guess most of us haven't quite evolved to the point where we are willing to fight for what is ours. This should be a lesson to all of us for the next time something like this happens. But its all good right? Not attacking you, just sayin'.....
