There is a mainstream rap track that precedes "Rapper's Delight." It was done by a popular funk band called Fatback. The name of the song is called "King Tim III." It is officially the first time Hip-Hop was ever put on record. It was a released just a few weeks before "Rapper's Delight."

But in another twist, "Rappers Delight" was copyrighted on August 25, 1979, beating out "King Tim III's" date of August 29, 1979.

For those who've never heard it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcTP4cvXSP0

FYI- Kudos to DJ TEKNISION for bringing this up first.

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

@meatwad get da money... YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT HIP HOP THAN MOST BLACK PEOPLE? let's not get too crazy.

i don't doubt that you may have a deep understanding and appreciation for the culture, but don't discount the knowledge of "most" black people because what you think you know about the culture.in addition to that, Black people have made several major contributions to music PERIOD, and everyone was not raised listening to hip hop. therefore there are many people who may not know as much about hip hop as others, because they may have been raised listening to reggae, jazz, gospel, etc. Black people are not limited to hip hop by any means, but HIP HOP is another jewel of Black/Brown culture. Its style is infectious, as most of our contributions are, and people all over the world love it and appreciate it because of the meaning and lifestlye that it encompasses.

As far as the building goes, beyond it being made into a museum, how about the people who will be forced out because they cant afford the hike in rent that is about to take place? same thing is happening in Harlem. but who knows about that? wish the Clintons would fight for the rights of those being victimized by the greed and bullying by the upper class, being that Bill is the Harlem-ite who started the gentrification movement.

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold that are too deep and exhausting to discuss thoroughly on this platform.

I am no one's nigga, calm yourself with all that.

you never know someone's situation. kudos to you for being born with a silver spoon, but some of us have had situations that do not lend to being out of the projects as of yet. Beyond that, you nor anyone else for that matter is any better than someone from the projects. the children in the pj's/ghettos didnt ask to be there, so do they deserve to deal with being put out? there are people who are orphans, living in single parent households, or plain and simple werent born with the financial security that others have. if you are at all a hip hop fan or even a conscious citizen, you would be familiar with the disparities of wealth both globally and nationwide.dont get it twisted, many are grinding to get out, and while some are complacent, most project residents are not there by choice. like most of the MC's and rappers who have made a name for themselves, some of us were born with rags and aim to gain riches, but that doesnt happen over night. As a moderate(politically), i dont believe in handouts, but definitely believe in human rights, and do not promote people's livelihood being threatened over a buy out. as far as the 80's, thats too deep to get into, you are talking about the climax of the drug trade in our community, EVERYONE was not swimming in dollars, and capitalism has victimized pools of people.

chill with your internet thuggery, apparently you dont know the true grind. if you are so anti-projects, dont listen to hip hop! side bar...most of the greats in any industry, black/white/other have come from the slum/ghetto/impoverished communities. as Jay Electronica would say "so what you sayin'?"

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

I understand where Meatwad coming from with that, you cant ask somebody else to come out they pocket. These are hard times and everybody feeling it in someways. But something should be done. But most of yall are just mentioning the newer artists. Most of them aint start rapper because what they seen back in the days. they aint concerned with that. I from down south and i cant speak for everybody, but i been listening to hip hop since i cant remember, i was born in 1980 but i didnt know it originated there. Why aint nobody mentioning the people that was actually doing something back then, people like Russel Simmons, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, LL CooL J, ect... they made a big profits back then and still amking them now. Russel simmons can easily clear that 5 mill. I can see if this was like 70 years from the origination and most of them was dead. Me being white doesnt make me a "wigger" as people call it. i grew up in the projects my family was one of like 5 families that were white. Usually people gravitate tords music that they can relate too and thats what i did i grew up on hip hop music i live what they rap about (and i know u all prolly sittin there like i bet that bitch live in the suburbs and dont know what a hard life is). i also have two sisters and both are black how can i not have an understanding of black culture when i have a black family? Some people have religion to turn to i had music. im not a religious person so i cant go ask god for help or go to church and confess my sins so i would go up in my room and listen to music and as life moved forward the music changed to material things i listened to it for the storytelling and the struggle part of it so when the music changed i went backwards to find what i wanted to hear and as it changed i appreciated the history more and more so yea i know an awful lot about hip hop but you say dont discount the knowledge of most black people and that wasnt my intent but dont discount my knowledge either based on skin color alone. i apolgize if my statement offended u that was not my intent

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

HipHopIS Love said:you did pretty well until ur last paragraph when u tried to throw an undercover blow with insulting white people while pretending ur not thats like me sayin " "yea i coulda said "shut the fuck up u ignorant mutherfucker" then again, i dont feel that woulda been a racist statement on my part by saying that because i could have said you "charcoal ass, musty smellin, pants to ur knees wearing, hoodrat, ashy elbowed bootlip" now that would be considered racist... see the difference?" " fuckin moron

for 1 uh,that was sarcastic, that last paragraph.2,you feeling like I'm a moron is a matter of opinion, and you're incorrect.3,you thought you were clever by rewording my last paragraph, but if me saying that makes me a "fucking moron",in your words, you doing it too makes you what?? hahahaha..21.your knowledge of hip hop is limited @ best, and I'm willing to bet on it.case in point-dude told you earlier on this post that fatback band's "king tim III"(personality jock) was the actual 1st rap record right? can YOU tell me what other rap record that rapper,on the fatback's song is known?? for?
now if wanna really be that moron you think I am,I'd say, don't spend your whole life on yo back..

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

uh since when does white girls getting black dick on a regular basis make them an expert on black culture? There are too many people
who don't give a fuck. Milk the cow for what it's
worth.
Damn, I grew up in the 80s and early 90s.

All this was created out of nothing.

That time nobody in the world had respect of

black people. Hip-Hop has changed the world.

Thanks to that we have this culture even you

"meatwad" got a job. There are people in any

angle of society who love Hip-Hop. You can talk

to a bank executive nowadays who might be

the greatest Snoop Dogg fan ever to give an

example. Who will listen when a black or latin

dude talks. Back in the 80s Michael Jackson

even needed to change his skin and looks in

order to sell better.

I can go to any place in the world. Go to Korea

and you will see people who are in love with

Hip-Hop. India, China, Japan, Spain, Germany, France.

They probably know more about it's background

than the average dude in the hood.

What would we be without our culture.

Sure it doesn't pay our bills in the first way.

Not everybody's job is Hip-Hop related, but

it still opens doors. It brings people together

of all cultural backgrounds. I would say

Hip-Hop has done more against racism, than

any other effort has.

Like Hip-Hop is love said.

I fully cosign that. I also don't give a fuck

about religion. I ain't down with commercial

god, but Hip-Hop is something real, that we

created. Meatwad, I think you came a little heavy with the whole "fuck that shit" approach from the jump, but I feel you on basically 99% of your position. We all have a responsibility to Hip-Hop on some level, but if the first place you worked at was going out of business, would you be putting up money to get it out the red? I don't think so. Everything is a progression. Things are bor and things die. This isn't the end of Hip-Hop. I thought Hip-Hop was about evolution? I do feel for those who may be subject to eviction, but they will not be left homeless as so many of you people have conceded. They will be offered and alternative, affordable housing solution or be offered a compensatory package for leaving. In other words, niggas will be caking if they throw them out. The projects, just like all other government-funded assistance programs is intended as a stepping stone to get your money up and move out, not a god damn retirement community! I grew up in the P's too. It's not like people are thirst to stay there. This might be a good look for them in the bigger picture. Call it forced motivation, lol. But seriously, I do think Hip-Hop should set-up a museum in the BX somewhere near 1520 Sedgwick. But placing a museum at the site does not solve the housing isssue, so people making that dual argument are spitting in the wind. Doesn't even come close to making sense with that hogwash. So, don't come down so hard on the young man for making his points because alot of what he's saying makes sense. 'Meatwad, easy on the 'fucks' though, lol

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

4 those who wanna kno:it goes in this order................................1st james brown...da big payback,1974...2nd,king tim da3rd, 3rd,grand master flash and the furious five,it was a party night everybody was shakin, the house was screamin n da bass was shakin....forgot da title, but it came out in 78, then rappers delight dropped....79...i'm sure yall r surprised by that order, but listin 2 da lyrics on da big paybak...n thats y da vintage rap songs were created on alot of james brown traxxxx.....one luv...keep ol skool hiphop alive....

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

Calling KRS1:
Go and round up these rich rappers and have them buy the building.
Hova
Ciroc Obama
Fif

And all the others claiming mad loot.

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

They don't really care about us.........

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

Long story short....times have changed and people have more money so now there really isn't a such thing as a strong "Black community", just rich Blacks and poor ones and a bunch of fuckers who do nothing but talk about change but can't even help themselves. The residents there had their own website where you could make donations to help them buy the building back. The building ain't even worth that much cause some of these hip hop moguls got several times the money that building is only worth ($7.5 million). We could've saved it, but we as a people always have a million and one reasons why NOT to do something productive for our own community...and then wonder why the rest of the world is so quick to NOT take us seriously. It starts with self. In regards to culture, sometimes all you NEED is a crummy old building. We're descendants of slaves and therefore have a history of others telling us that anything related to us is irrelevant to the point where we subconciously agree. Our surroundings can change rapidly but our mentality will take much longer. I guess most of us haven't quite evolved to the point where we are willing to fight for what is ours. This should be a lesson to all of us for the next time something like this happens. But its all good right? Not attacking you, just sayin'.....

re: Hip-Hop’s Birthplace to Be Sold

2 HOT97

WORD!
