i can give a damn what niggaz say ll is overrated. niggaz stay sayin he got longevity which is true but that nigga dropped more duds than a motherfucker. ll was only hot from the time he came out till about 97 real talk. he had a couple of straight battles and all but mr smith was his last best album wit the hey lover, and doin it well joint. anything he did after mr smith was straight ass esp that my hat is like a shark joint fin lol. he lucky he had movies to fall back on.

I really appreciate L.'s stance on how he feels about people's opinion on what and where goes with his lyrics and music. Artistic expression is often subjective as heck, either it's subject to how the artist feels or how the recipient of what the artist produces feels. And though artists should feel free to create based upon where they are, it's rare for an artist to consistently hit with the people with everything they release.

Two people come to mind that has done this to a great extent throughout their long careers, R. Kelly and Jay-Z. People that do this are successful for the most part because they try to stay in tune with the pulse of what's going on with the people and the music while injecting where they may be personally with it all. It's a balance that's not always easy to strike.

Now...having said all of that (lol), it has been difficult for L.L. "Future of the Funk" Cool J to do just that. I've been a fan since "Jack The Ripper" and then became a fan of the rest of his other works, though I didn't always agree with his direction, both lyrically and musically.

Enter "Exit 13". Thus far, from what I've heard, he's breaking even between quality and somewhat wack songs. "Rockin With The G.O.A.T.", "You Better Watch Me" and the unofficial release of the Marley Marl borrowed track (came from Rakim's Mahogany track...lol) freestyle, that I call "I Reign Supreme" are note worthy as far as a return of the "I'm Bad" and "Jack The Ripper" lyrical depth and flow of Cool J. "You Better Watch Me", I believe would have been a lot stronger if the "I'm Bad" baseline was used, which is something he doesn't do enough of, and that's sample his own hit songs for new ones creatively. And also for the "two step", "bubbly" and "I see you" line to be left off, as it takes away from the power of the song. Buuut that may just be for the new would be fans. (lol)

The girl songs aren't coming off as strong. Maybe he's wanting to appeal to a younger (dumber...no offense intended...lol) girl fan base by approaching the lyrics and music as he has, I don't know. I guess I keep looking for something a lot less adolescent from someone with L.'s ability and age for a lady killer (or supportive) ditty (lol). And don't get me wrong, ain't nothing wrong with having fun on a track, but a certain quality still has to be present. There, I said it! (lol)

Even still, I look forward to hearing the whole album from
The G-O-A-T.
