Cosby's Artists Fire Response To Russell Simmons

Russell Simmons’ critique of Bill Cosby has struck a nerve with rappers featured on the actor/comedian’s forthcoming Hip-Hop album, Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency.

On Wednesday (Nov. 4), Simmons spoke out against Cosby’s criticism of Hip-Hop and the conduct of today’s youth in a blog about the entertainer on GlobalGrind.com

Despite expressing his admiration and respect for Cosby, Simmons feels Cosby’s attacks have undermined his “pure and good” intentions of motivating youth to realize their potential for success.

“Bill Cosby is an example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure,” the Hip-Hop mogul wrote on Globalgrind.com. “What they don’t understand is that the young people who they criticize did not create their own realities.”

Cosnarati, which features appearances from rappers Supa Nova Slom, Jace the Great, represents the comedy veteran’s efforts to bridge the generational gap and inspire social change with socially conscious rap songs.

According to Jace the Great, the television and movie star realizes the power of Hip-Hop culture as “a means to reach more youth not to condemn them."

“It is clear to see Cosby has actually moved beyond just addressing or blaming the youth,” Jace the Great told AllHipHop.com.

“He is working from an intergenerational standpoint not only by involving us emcees who come from the Hip-Hop generation and lifestyle but he also spoke openly to the elder generation about their involvement and accountability,” said the rapper. “Point blank, the problem right now is there is a state of emergency in our communities and we need to act fast."

According to Supa Nova Slom, Simmons should focus more on what Cosby is doing now rather than dwell on past comments.

“I respect Russell Simmons for all of his contributions to Hip-Hop culture but I hope that people do not get distracted and lost in his critiques of Cosby's past comments … Cosby is taking a whole other route by investing in politically charged Hip-Hop that does not condemn but instead inspires and uplifts during a time when there is next to none of that happening in the music industry,” the rapper stated.

With Cosnarati, Supa Nova Slom hopes listeners will be motivated to make changes to elevate themselves and their community. So much so, the rapper cites the past as inspiration for taking charge in the struggle for progress.

“It is all of our jobs to play a role in creating a collective movement. People need to be inspired and empowered again to get involved just as we got involved during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements,” Supa Nova Slom explained. “This CD hopefully will inspire not only conversations, but also actions, programs, and raised self-esteem."

Bill Cosby’s Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency is slated to hit stores on November 24.

Russell tries to defend what they are trying to pass off as hip hop today. Russ lost a lot of credility when he sold Def-Jam and allowed people who dont appreciate the culture help turn what used to be a tool for to tell the world about our plight into "Everybody wanna be a gangster'. It's sad that our music only reflects ignorance and decadence. For every hard time there has always been ten good times, Let hip hop once again celebrate the beauty of life and families so that we can once again jam with our children. Let us not forget that russell likes to sleep with the enemy with his ass in the air.

We can all be whatever we want to be if we are exposed to better. What could possibly be better than a dude like Bill Cosby with power and influence (and money) backing positive music....

If yall havent heard the CD yall shouldnt comment its hot..with that said if you looking for a commercial record with n***a 1000 times, cussing, references to gangs, and disrespect to women then this aint for you.

Next Bill Cosby was the closest thing to a father that alot of us had growing up....he showed us the black family in a postive light even when BET didnt....there were no positive images in Hollywood of us until then.

So even if you think Cos is wrong....or you dont like his dilivery of his message...just be quiet and listen thats your elder speaking. What has Russell Contributed to the back race?
Rap? He showed us that hes a good business man but all of his Artists got the same  garbage slave record deals that the white record labels were handing out robbing artists. He did not change the game for anybody exect himself and RUN DMC. It wasnt like he said u know what ? I'm gonna help my brothers and sisters get better deals...Im gonna teach them...cause I'm they brother.

Yeah Cos a lil mad at the rappers. You know why? He poured his heart and soul into raising black folks with black pride through his stand up and THE COSBY SHOW and rappers came and set us back further than we were before Cosby entered the scene igorant things our  favorite rappers rap about.

[VERSE 1]
I can't lie, I like to get high and figure-8 when I drive
Blow doja rope in the sky for all my cuddies that died
We can't do nothin but strive during the struggle
You want a silver spoon in your mouth, you gotta hustle
As I take another hit of the spliff that soldiers passin
The only chance I get to feel peace, I gotta have some
So see, I spark the holla a lot, it keeps me goin
Baby boy 3 steps ahead of his death, and mama knowin
So she's sayin, "Baby, change your ways"
But I was raised in the days of Uzis and A.K.'s
Where killers play their deadly game called the pistol-tag
Just let me live, I ask
But if you're caught in a cross, then I'ma off your ass
Young n***a that's tryin to have the better things in life
He went from crookin and rookin to jookin overnight
Some try to say he ain't right, but who's to say that he's wrong
That's why you're starvin, and the name of this song
Is get some Get Right

[CHORUS: Levitti
You, you need to get some get right

I feel Russel, if anyone can have an opinion about hiphop, then its Russel. I ain't knocking Bill, but im going to listen to the man who had more to do with it from the inside, then somebody from the out. Bill aways been against hiphop, it's just that in these times hiphop is in everything so in order to reach the youth, you got to f**k with it. He tried the same thing with comedy, but Rich and Eddie wasn't hearing that s**tback then. My point is you can make people live how YOU feel they should live. Just as much it's gangsta rap, it's just as much conscious music--and it always been that way.

I look at their attentions and I think Doctor Cosby really loves Black people, he's just doing what he feels in his heart, you got to respect that.

Bottom line it's ok to disagree as long as we still come together to deal with the problems!

Got damn, what happened to reading comprehension. Russell Simmons has consistently cosigned every misogynistic and disrespectful act. Unfortunately many here are embarrassed that their behavior is called out for what it is, and instead of fixing behavior, direct their anger towards Bill Cosby for telling the truth....

Cosby is 110% correct... Black women are the leading murderers of Black youth through abortion, Black men second, AIDS and disease third, and yet, Hip Hop's biggest enemy is the police? Bill Cosby points out the truth, now the uneducated / uninformed who cosign the misogyny and hate, get mad at Cosby. Simmons is full of boo boo and a cancer on the Hip Hop community masquerading as a leader, but obviously many here, lack the analytical skills to recognize cancer when we hear it....

Didn't def jam put out a whole lotta artists that rap about dope, money and murder?

For every social conscious rap group def jam put out, there were at least 5 gangsta rappers in addition to it

I don't see why some people knocking Bill Cosby cause he is trying to provide some uplifting and socially aware rap, would you knock KRS-One and Buckshot for doing it? would you knock Masta Ace & Edo G for doing it? Would you knock Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Common for doing it?

Bill Cosby is trying to do something constructive here despite whatever the f**k his previous comments may have been. It ain't about the past, it's about the present and the future. It ain't about where you from, it's where you at and where you're going to but some people clearly don't realise that. If you want to live and be stuck in the past, then do that, but don't drag the rest of your community in it with you.

Since when do we start judging an album before it comes out? Whether or not it's good rap is something we'll have to find out, regardless the idea is cool.

I co-sign Bill Cosby on this one.

Hey maybe that's why Russell sits on the board of Walmart and not even trying to get them to help raise workers pay.  Russell isn't anything more than the shut up Urban youth payout.  Kind of like AL Sharpton Jesse Jackson.  They pray off the fact that black people will follow them.  And judging from what he saying right here he doesn't want lose his demographic following that he uses to extort big companies to pay him.  And Cosby is right.  In 2009 if you want to make something of yourself you can.  And nobody saying rapper actor or football player.  Cosby saying if you want a job that pays 60,000 a year its out their go get it and if you don't have it its your own bad decisions that got you stuck.  Take ownership don't blame walmart and popeyes or the government because you went to be hoop star or a football player or an actor or A RAPPER.  And didn't take care of your paper work.  LISTEN TO BILL COSBY.  Their aren't any corporations he's extorting under your name.  He saying be more abstract and creative than just saying the F word and the B word that's easy.  Think about all the successful people in the world who made it on their own and I'm going to list Cosby's advice and I'm gonna list Russel's advice you tell me which one you should follow.

COSBY: CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO ACHEIVE GOALS
RUSSELL: BLAME SOMEBODY ELSE

You tell me which advice you should listen to and follow.

Co-sign to the fullest!  When have you heard Bill Cosby call black women (or any race of women, for that matter) nappy headed hoes?   The names Bill Cosby and Don Imus don't even belong in the same sentence!

Still, the sad thing is that negroes are still missing the bus when it comes to Hip Hop!  I know the fat, greasy white man is in his office laughing right now...while Russell Simmons, Bill Cosby, and AHH battle it out over a culture that really doesn't even exist anymore.

Bill Cosby has a point--he always does--but I think he bricked with this one.  You can't just go snooping in unfamiliar territory without getting the blessing / approval of it's leaders.  Why didn't Bill reach out to Russell initially...after all, Russell was more recently responsible for the Obama mixtape, which was a positive project.

At the same time, Russell didn't have to air him out...why didn't he reach out to Bill Cosby when he first heard of the project?  Bill Cosby announced this project back in 2007.  Why wait two years when it's about to be released and air out one of the most respected black figures in television history?

The whole situation is plain ol' screwy to me!  They can keep this Hip Hop / Hip Not shit...I think I'll just wait for Master P's BBTV.

First off, I would like to say i admire and respect, the contributions, Bill Cosby has made for the Black cause. I support Bill Cosby in this.
I have no problem with Gangsta rap. I grew up on this Music.
But Rap Music needs diversity. At the moment it's all a 1 way street.
Just few are thinking out of the box. There is no message in the music anymore. And here Mr. Cosby has a point. It's not about him hating Hip-Hop. If so, he would be on O'Reilly every time as a co host and put more fuel in the fire. This man as been critic, because he loves his people. He knows we can do better. And he knows we can do better with our artform. Why should we let corporate sharks marginalize us? Because they give Russel or Jay some money as board members? Are they giving you anything? Apart from Albums, where you can skip 2/3rds of the tracks? Where the beats are hot, but the lyrics are garbage? Where the rapper lists exactly the same 100 consumer products, the last rapper also listed before?

Let's break it down like this!!!

I am tired of hearing Rappers rapping about expensive Drinks, that I would never buy, just because I'm not an Idiot and I respect hard earned money.

I'm tired of hearing rappers promoting brands, that ain't even interested in us for buying their overpriced shit.

I'm tired of rappers talking about Maybachs, a car that even Mercedes Benz sees as a flop and considers folding the brand. Come on. A Maybacj is nothing but an old S-Class for 3 times the price, because of some gadgets for retards.

And I'm tired of rappers whose lyrics sounds like copy and paste from some other rappers that don't know what creative means.

Corporate America thinks we are stupid.
In this case Bill Cosby has a valid point.

Don't continue to let Russell Simmons, Sean "Puffy" Combs and Jay-Z etc. lead the black community and hip-hop into a downward spiral while they shake hands with big corporate wigs. Notice that all they promote and endorse in hip-hop is the worst of the worst from the black community!

We should @ least give Bill Cosby a chance to influence us in positive way since all we hear in hip-hop nowadays is sex, drugs, violence, gang affiliation etc. There is more to the black community and hip-hop that white people and foreigners don't see on a regular basis.

I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our lord, one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First , I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the of the colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me in my modest plantation in the West Indies where I have experimented with some of the newest and still the oldest method for control of slaves. Ancient Rome would envy us if my program is implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious KING JAMES, whose BIBLE we CHERISH, I saw enough to know that our problem is not unique. While Rome used cords or wood as crosses for standing human bodies along the old highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasion.

I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree a couple of miles back. You are losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed, Gentleman,...You know what your problems are; I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them.

In my bag, I have a fool proof method for controlling your slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed it will control the slaves for at least three hundred years. My method is simple, any member of your family or any OVERSEER can use it.

I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves, and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use FEAR, DISTRUST, and ENVY for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies, and it will work throughout the SOUTH. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On the top of my list is "AGE" but it is only there because it starts with an "A"; The second is"COLOR" or shade; there is INTELLIGENCE, SIZE, SEX, SIZE OF PLANTATION, ATTITUDE of owner, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, east or west, north, south, have fine or coarse hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences, I shall give you an outline of action- but before that, I shall assure you that DISTRUST IS STRONGER THAN TRUST, AND ENVY IS STRONGER THAN ADULATION, RESPECT OR ADMIRATION.

The black slave, after receiving this indoctrination, shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.

Don't forget you must pitch the old black VS. the young black males, and the young black male against the old black male. You must use the dark skinned slaves VS. the light skin slaves. You must use the female VS the male, and the male VS, the female. You must always have your servants and OVERSEERS distrust all blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us.

Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control, use them. Never miss an opportunity. My plan is guaranteed, and the good thing about this plan is that if used intensely for one year the slave will remain perpetually distrustful.

-WILLIAM LYNCH-1772
The letter above is one of the major problems of the African-American race today. And with this knowledge we as a race can and will over come. So with this letter still in your mind I ask that you enlighten someone else and send this letter to as many brothers and sisters. We as a race must start somewhere in learning our problems what better place than the document that started the destruction of our MOST POWERFUL RACE!!!

I respect what Cosby is trying to do, but, in my opinion he is no different than Don Imus for the idiotic comments he made about hip-hop. <<<< EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY RIGHT THERE

To say one person is exactly like another (not in a specific category, but as a whole) based on comments about a SPECIFIC segment of society is purely ludicrous.

You're basically saying you respect Don Imus in the same sentence. SMH

Cosby is right.... The so-called "Black" culture needs to awaken on a new plane.... Hip-Hop is like chemo-therapy, designed to help, but it also kills healthy cells. Your oppressors is using your weapons on you.... But I saw a video that explained our extinction that can take place in 20 years given a natural disaster doesn't speed things up... Hip-hop is like eating candy for the mind.... People need more veggies up there.... Start playing more Native Tongues, RZA based music, early KRS, Marvin, Sam Cooke, Miles, more Cosby, but most importantly more Richard Pryor... But have your mind open in your favor.

Jchilla,

Did I touch a nerve? Are you afraid of the truth?

I'm the first to supportive of a real cause and I understand Cosby's humanity, however, he's never made amends for his flaws as he expects of others.

In other words, he's living the same life that he's criticizing hip hop for.

Whether or not Cosby's accused of sexual assault or not, the fact of the matter is that he had one child out of wedlock and was accused of fathering another. He had to take a DNA to figure out one child wasn't his meaning, HE WAS SMASHIN'.

All I'm asking for is a standard bearer. If you get out of pocket with the accusations, make sure you've swept in front of your own front door.

Since we want to talk about respecting our elders or forefathers,  one of our forefathers said "let he who is amongst you, without sin, cast the first stone".

Think about that.

Willie Lynch is Dead (1712?-2003)
There are many problems with this document — not the least of which is the fact that it is absolutely fake.

By William Jelani Cobb
Africana.com

I long ago stopped listening to sentences that begin with "The problem with black people is," or end with "and that's why black people can't get ahead now," which partly explains my initial indifference to the now-famous William Lynch Speech.

In the few years since the speech on how to train slaves first appeared, it has been cited by countless college students and a black member of the House of Representatives, along the way becoming the essential verbal footnote in barbershop analysis of what's wrong with black people. The rapper Talib Kweli laments on the song "Know That," "blacks are dyin'/how to make a slave/by Willie Lynch is still applyin'," and one professor at a Midwestern university made the speech required reading for her class. Of late, the frequency of its citations seems to be increasing — at least three people have asked me about it in the last month.

According to the speech's preface, Master Lynch was concerned enough with the fortunes of his slave-holding brethren in the American colonies to present a lecture on the bank of the James River, explaining how to keep unruly servants disunited. The old, he argued, should be pitted against the young, the dark against the light, the male against the female and so on. Such disunifying tactics "will control the slaves for at least 300 years," he guaranteed. And that, it seems, is why black people can't get ahead now.

There are many problems with this document — not the least of which is the fact that it is absolutely fake.

As a historian, I am generally skeptical of smoking guns. Historical work, like forensic science, isn't some flashy field — it depends on the painstaking aggregation of facts that lead researchers to the most likely explanation, but rarely the only one. Slavery was an incredibly complex set of social, economic and legal relations that literally boiled down to black and white. But given the variation in size of farms, number of enslaved workers, region, crops grown, law, gender-ratios, religion and local economy, it is unlikely that a single letter could explain slave policy for at least 151 years of the institution and its ramifications down to the present day.

Considering the limited number of extant sources from 18th century, if this speech had been "discovered," it would've been the subject of incessant historical panels, scholarly articles and debates. It would literally be a career-making find. But the letter was never "discovered." Rather, it simply "appeared" on the Internet — bypassing the official historical circuits and making its way directly into the canon of American racial conspiratoria.
================================================

Stop blaming the white man, he don't give two rat fucks about black people.

But take responbilty for your own actions. We as a people need to

make a change, its muthaf**kin 2009 if we don't do good for

ourselves sooner or later we gonna be blaming his ass in 2090 too!
