BREAKING NEWS: Rap Pioneer Mr. Magic Dies Of Heart Attack

By Nolan Strong

Legendary DJ Mr. Magic has died from a heart attack, AllHipHop.com has confirmed with various sources.

Mr. Magic was a legendary DJ who debuted in 1979 on a pay-to-play broadcast on WHBI 105.9's "The Mr. Magic Disco Showcase."

In 1983, he launched "Mr. Magic's Rap Attack," in New York City which featured a young DJ Marley Marl in addition to future Co-Chillin Record label owner Tyrone “Fly Ty” Williams.

Mr. Magic, born John Rivas, was also a co-founder of the legendary Hip-Hop collective The Juice Crew, which featured Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Marley, Marl, MC Shan, Craig G., Kool G. Rap and Masta Ace.

Mr. Magic’s radio show influenced countless of artists, ranging from rappers like Tupac Shakur, KRS-One, Biggie Smalls, Nas, Eric B. and Rakim, DJ Premier and countless others.

“He paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mix shows,” DJ Premier said via his blog. “Also sparked the career of Boogie Down Productions due to the diss he showed when they came to shop their demo to him and was turned away which then sparked “South Bronx” and “The Bridge is Over.”

Mr. Magic was featured as a DJ on 2002’s Grand Theft Auto’s fictitious radio station Wildstyle Pirate Radio.

Mr. Magic meant so much to me hearing his recorded broadcasts in 1985 and 1986... My cousin Andrew Kimbrough from Harlem would go home for the summer and bring his tapes back... Mr. Magic, Nasty Nes (The Rap Attack - Seattle), Julio G (LA) and Nancy G (KAOS FM Olympia) were all great influences on me and my career in broadcasting... I was overwhelmed with emotions when I read this headline.  Much love and respect to Mr. Magic for being an influence in my life and in the lives of millions of New Yorkers and Hip-Hoppers beyond the Big Apple.  Peace and blessings to his loved ones...

For those who often refer to me as the queen of hip–hop radio, a title that I accept with great pride and appreciation, know that my heart is heavy because I have truly lost my king…….…Mr. Magic.

Mr. Magic was not only my dear friend but he was the only person with whom I've had a synonymous career. At the pinnacle of Hip-Hop’s most significant and historic time, we were the only radio personalities that rocked it on the airwaves. We took “digging in the crates” seriously. There were no hip-hop stores, no hip-hop stations, and no hip-hop promoters. We had to endure the wrath of station management, unearth diamonds in the rough and fight to get them on the air.  Needless to say we had a lot in common. What we definitely shared, beyond any shadow of a doubt, was the way we lived, loved and defended this genre to the fullest. At a time when it was considered a fad, trend or an entity that would soon fade, we risked our careers to make sure that hip-hop would prosper.

Mr. Magic was inspiration for many of us.

Many knew him and many loved him for his talent, his tireless dedication and joyfully accepted his outrageous personality.

The smile is gone. The microphone is silent. For me, something that was whole is truly just a half now. Mr. Magic was a true hip-hop pioneer, and I can only pray and wish upon hope, that today’s current hip-hop community know of, remember and most importantly, respect his legacy forever. We have lost a true Hip-Hop icon.

Rest in peace Juice, I’ll miss you dearly

Love

Your sister Lady B
