University May Drop Gucci Mane Performance Over Lyrics

An upcoming performance at North Carolina A&T featuring Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane is drawing criticism from students and faculty members.

Gucci will be performing with artists Fabolous, Trey Songz, Keri Hilson and OJ Da Juiceman.

According to the News & Record, students have been complaining to officials about Gucci’s alleged gang ties and the reflection his appearance could have on the school.

“We are reviewing our options right now,” Chancellor Harold Martin said yesterday (September 30.) “We are trying to determine if this artist can be replaced under the existing contract, how that would be done, what the fiscal result would be.”

Reports stated that some students are divided over picking a socially conscious artist as opposed to choosing an artist who may draw a large following.

“This is frankly exactly the kind of intellectual debate we should be having at this university,” Martin said. “It is important, and it raises the intellectual climate when we ask these difficult questions about our community.”

Officials with the school said the concert will continue as scheduled on October 31, since contracts have been signed - and 6,000 tickets have been sold.

Gucci Mane’s prison stints - including one for a murder charge that was eventually dropped - almost derailed his recording career.

The rapper is currently featured on the remix to Mariah Carey’s hit single “Obsessed” and Mario’s track “Break Up.”

I'm surprised a little, because NC A&T is a Historically Black College University. Usually we don't care about what artist say in their music, for the most part.

@ world champ - Every university has the right to establish certain standards for performers so the school is well within their rights. To say they forget its entertainment makes no sense when Gucci was invited to perform not give a speech so therefore the service he's being hired to do must meet their standards or he simply can't perform.

Well this donkey is a reality that nobody wants to deal with. Don't get me wrong I truly like Gucci mane but some of his lyrics are harsh and could cause and uproar. But if they get rid of Gucci then Oj da Juice man shouldn't perform either.

But Guccci is the part of the game everyone try to ignore but ain't going no where no time soon unless he die or become ill.

Some of yall be killing me saying that this s**tis just entertainment. All rapper aren't entertainers they are block burners and they take this s**tvery seriously!!!!

The wouldn't know how to entertain if they were hit with a sambo stick. They are rappers - they rhyme and it's somebody out there listen to them that take this s**tto heart. It's their soldier grind music. Get their mind right for battle....

All forms of music ISN"T entertainment. Why u think this is school is having second thoughts now.

OJ da Juiceman and Gucci Mane is one in the same, so if they drop Gucci, i don't see why they wouldn't drop OJ da Juiceman. But i think Juiceman had a pretty good verse on that "Wasted" song, better than Plies anyway, whom they replaced the Juiceman verse with.

Gucci ain't an entertainer he's entertainment a ss hole. Use your dictionary to break down the difference. Gucci is a street thug that's doing street things and enjoying it!!!!

If every artist was the same then this genre of music would be so boring. Gucci does Gucci and he does gucci well but he ain't an entertainer he's just entertainment and soldier music to the simple and hard.

Say what you will about Gucci mane but at least he making money!
And in  some peoples opinion he might seem dumb, but he is good at what he does, and unlike other rappers who sit back and b***h gucci mane just keep putting out music.
Why is it that some of us just love to hate other people when they are doing what they love?
Yes his lyrics are not the best but at least he is original.
