Bay Area rap stars Too $hort, E-40 and MC Hammer have been tapped to serve as consultants on the upcoming docu-drama film, Weight.

Weight is based on the life story of one of Oakland’s youngest drug kingpins, Darryl “Lil’ D” Reed, who took control of the local drug trade after the incarceration of Felix "The Cat" Mitchell.

The flick is executive produced by Todd “Hollywood G.” Graham, who said the rappers have been utilized to keep the “authenticity of the project.”

Lil D, who was featured on an episode of BET’s American Gangster series, is infamous for his role in controlling the Oakland drug market in the last 1980’s.

By the time he was 18, he was making millions of dollars, but by the time he was 21, he was facing a lengthy prison sentence on federal drug dealing charges.

Lil D was eventually sentenced to 35 years in prison under mandatory minimum federal guidelines and he is currently still incarcerated, having served 20.

While the movie has yet to find a director, casting is currently underway.

Representatives for the project told AllHipHop.com that Weight is due for a theatrical release in Spring/Summer of 2010.

Yup that's what we need. More documentaries and more movies about young black men being drug kingpins. More movies and shows about black men being pimps. We need more black athletes and more black rappers. We need more black people on the Maury show making a fool out of themselves on trying to find out who their  "baby daddy" is.

Black people we seriously need to wake up. We're being played and used like a stack of cards. We can really do better than this, and it can all start by getting a simple education.

I agree we need more positive representation of members of the black communties, and there certainly are many brothas and sistas who work hard, go to school, raise their kids, etc.

There are also many people doing dirt getting that money by any means necessary, that's a reality as well. Unfortunately the negative shit sells better and not just to the black consumer but to the other ethnic groups as well. Italian Americans have complained for decades that they are generally portrayed as mafia hoodlums, but once again it sells. Nobody wants to hear about the good Italian husband who lets say runs a bakery, goes to church, and is faithful to his wife, sadly the shit doesn't sell.

@BlockLifeRecords

"instead of talkin down on tha people who fall victim of tha system-- tha ones who just take tha hand they was dealt"

Why praise those who "just take the hand they was dealt" when that's the easy way out? Why not give accolades to those who slap away the "hand that they was dealt," took the harder route, and still made it?

"why not talk down on tha government and all tha otha mu'fuckas who make it like this for us..."

So why not talk down the government because they "MAKE" it this way for us? This is why I stressed education because if a majority of us blacks in these "hoods" were educated, then the government wouldn't be able to "MAKE" it like this for us.

For example, why were the slaves enslaved for so long? Why didn't they just break free? It's because they didn't know any better. It wasn't until they were EDUCATED that they were freed. 2 years after Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation slaves in Galveston Texas were still enslaved, and didn't know they were freed. It wasn't until 2 whole years later that they were EDUCATED on the fact that they were freed. Go look up "Juneteenth"

"Education is a must"

Sorry I didn't mean to get so deep on y'all but this Blockforliferecords dude pulled it out of me.

All Im sayin is, yall talk about it, why not act on it? Why dont YOU make a movie about some of the more positive people? You cant get mad at a man for making a movie that he wanted to make. How do you know what HIS motives actually are behind making that movie? Thas his choice. Anyway. Fuck what I just said. Its irrelevant.

All we're are is asking for more stories like Chris Garner's(Pursuit of Happyness) to come out. But you don't want that. You like all the negative stuff right. It makes you feel like a thug, like a real man right? All these gangsta movies and documentaries are only show about 5 or less years out of someones life. These gangsta lifestyles are so short so why focus on it? Oh yea your name is AZ so I'm sure that you look up to these gangsta fools.

@Holla221, keep speaking the truth, thats what we need.

@AZ westsider, what kind of ignorance is that? Hip hop has long been a tool used by artists to spread positive messages, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Immortal Technique, and Paris are just a few that are still doing it, not to mention the greats like Tupac and Public Enemy and others that did it before. By corporate Amirkkka glorifying this type of story, it subliminally tells all minorities growing up in the hood that the only way to make it out of the situation were in is to be a drug kingpin. The worse thing about it is that it glorifies our own people killing eachother, through gang violence and drugs, the days them killing us are gone, they set up a system where they can watch us do it to ourselves, get smart and stop allowing them to do this to us.

@Blackliferecords, your right, the government puts us here in this situation, but its up to us to get out of it, like Malcom said, By Any Means Necessary. Whether it be by peaceful methods or by overthrowing this oppressive system. But whatever way is required, we cannot defeat our oppressors until we stop oppressing ourselves.

Oakland fucked with the NW back in the 80's so I saw shit first hand as a pup how much money was being made by some of my elders deep in the game.  Big ass Motorola mobile phones, BBS rims, Fila sweatsuits, houses, Gold nugget jewelry; was all supplied by ill-gotten gains from dope money.  98.9% of them don't have shit to show for the penitentiary chances they took.
