Hughes Brothers' Pimp Drama Under Fire By City Of Oakland

The Hughes Brothers’ latest project Gentlemen of Leisure has come under fire by city officials who worry about the effect the new HBO drama will have on the world’s view of Oakland.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the controversy is putting the new show’s shooting location in jeopardy, as members of the Oakland City Council and others debate whether or not to approve a film permit for the production.

Originally announced in July, Gentlemen of Leisure follows the life of a legendary Oakland pimp, as he struggles to leave the hustle.

The series, written by Evan Reilly, delves into the overall hustlers’ subculture by examining the conflict between old-school pimps and the younger guys whose approach incorporates the violence of the drug culture.

The City of Oakland’s concern is that the show will take advantage of the negative reputation already associated with the Bay Area hub and create an environment that will lead to the further exploitation of women.

That image would stand in exact opposition of Mayor Ron Dellums’ plan to create a “model city.”

The Hughes brothers, however, argue that their aim is to do for Oakland what The Wire did for the city of Baltimore by staying as true to reality as possible.

“It’s The Wire meets The Sopranos set in Oakland in a crime element never used before,” Allen Hughes told The San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s not just about pimps and prostitutes, but also about the history of a city that never got it’s due. Like Detroit or Miami and a lot of other cities, Oakland is steeped in heavy street industry, in rackets. I’m just going to say it, Oakland is a pimpin’ town. It’s flourished there. And whenever and wherever street life is celebrated, the city gets a shout out.”

In previous interviews about the project, Allen Hughes explained that Gentlemen of Leisure would be a departure from the traditional portrayal of pimp culture and would explore the human conditions it creates.

“This isn’t something we take lightly and we’re not doing a show about a tawdry pimp,” Hughes added recently. “The city is the star of the show, and characters spring forth from that.”

Even if they are denied permission to shoot in Oakland, the Hughes Brothers plan on starting production on Gentlemen of Leisure in the fall.

The show is executive produced by Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Polly Anthony for Interscope’s TV unit.

Iovine has voiced his interest in tying the drama heavily to Hip-Hop music.

Wire was a multi-faceted show, not one-sided like this special seems to be. I don't blame oakland on this call.

"Iovine has voiced his interest in tying the drama heavily to Hip-Hop music".....Of course he does....He exploits black artists and music..Which is part of the reason why most of our music glorifies violence....

I don't know though..9 times out of 10 these types of movies negative side out shines the positive...

I just hope they feed us a balance diet, and display a lesson at the end of the film.

idk about this one. i think of The Wire and how it portrayed Balitmore. Even though some of it was fabricated it showed the blood lines of the city and i think The Hughes series will do the same thing. But why hide whats already out there. We know Oakland, Frisco and The Bay Area is not going to change anytime soon. All of this nonsense from the killing of Oscar, drugs, prostitution and crime has been instill in Oakland since the days of Felix. It's not going anywhere. People outside of the Bay think WE all listen to Hyphy music, and that's not true It has been stapled in their mind, just like the names that Oakland has seen over generations. We make small steps to improve, but then we turn aorund and its back to begining of the equation. While the show most likely will be entertaining, it will also put another wrinkle in The Bay Area.

So lets, see. We can talk about Obama, we can talk about Sara Palin dumb ass, we can talk about all this other shit that doesn’t have anything to do with hip-hop, but now mention of Oscar Grant. This dude was in his early 20s, work a regular 9-5 at fucking trader joes and was shot close range by a fucking 2yr rockie BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) while laying face down with 2 other officers on top of him. No mention by allhiphop because its not hip-hop. Hip-hop is supposed to represent the urban life the good and the bad. I mean look at the fucking video. They fucking executed this dude in front of a close to 50-60 other people witch 3-4 of them used cell phones to capture it on a train at 2:30am new years day. Oakland is currently ranked 5 in the US for murder rate, but ranked last for actually solving these crimes and you mean to tell me the fucking Hughs Brothers want to film a show about Pimps in my city. Yeah, Oakland was put on the map for many things, yeah pimpin start in the Oakland streets and in SF, but so was the fucking Black Panthers, how about making a movie illustrating how the fucking Oakland Police ( called themselves the “night riders”) was charge and found guilty for a civil law suite back in 2003-2004 for police riding around planting dope, guns, and stolen shit on people just so they could arrest them. They would actually extort hustlers by taking they stash, then selling it back to them days later. The Oakland police department was taking dope from the evidence room and selling it back to on the streets. This went on for years, and many people complained about it, but it fell on deaf ears until marked money and kilos started coming back into the police station. “What you mean, this money with the serial numbers of *&(*^&*%% was at what house, this money is already in our evidence room” that’s how all this shit came to light. The Oakland police department was found guilty and was forced to pay out millions of dollars to families, release people from jail that was falsely accused, and a few of the officers that was found guilty fled the country and have not been seen since 2004. You mean to tell me the Hughes brothers can’t think of anything else to make a show about besides fucking pimpin. No, it sounds like the Hughes Brothers are the ones getting Pimp.

And yes T-ROCK, PAC did slap the shit out of one them fools on the set of a movie, I believe it was Menace 2 Society". Pac was actually supposed to play Cain, which he was hooked up with through Jada Pinket. He didn’t like the direction of the film and a few comments one the brother made, so he slapped the shit of dude a few days into shooting the movie and left the set. They actually threaten to sue him over it, but later dropped the charges.

So my point is, if we can talk about politics, if we can talk about Jennifer Hudson tragic situation, if we can talk about gena 6, if we can talk about Sean Bell, if we can talk about fucking movie reviews, why cant we talk about a cop shooting an unarm Blackman in his back while laying face down on his stomach with two officers restraining him? And who gives a shit about the fucking “Wrestler” movie with Mickey Rourke.  Did he play in any hip-hop movies?

The problem is, back in the 70s, we had no other way of getting on the big screen unless it was a black exploitation film. Back kids was not getting accepted into Call Berkley, we wasn’t getting any 9-5 jobs. Its now 2009, we have the ability to go to college and get high paying jobs. My brother just graduated from Laney City College with a 4.00GPA that he maintained for 2 years and got a full time scholarship to Call Berkley, majoring in Political science. We have a black elected president, and you don’t see anything wrong with “one more” black exploitation film?
I’m born and raised in Oakland, live in the east, did dirt on 71st, and even been to jail a few times. My brother has inspired me so much, that I have enrolled in school and will have my AA in Computer Information System (CIS) in May, and will have my BA by 2011. I also have several Microsoft certifications all because I was inspired by what my brother is doing. Imagine if just one solid movie or “HBO special” was filmed and centered in Oakland how much of an impact that would have on my community or anywhere else for that matter.

By the way, the footage of the cop shooting Oscar as he was laying face down on the ground can be seen here, http://www.ktvu.com/video/18409133/?taf=fran

As far as this movie, one of the twins said "’m just going to say it, Oakland is a pimpin’ town. It’s flourished there. And whenever and wherever street life is celebrated, the city gets a shout out." I think that is the problem right there that Oakland officials are talking about, why does street life have to be celebrated to this degree yet again? Yeah The Mack was filmed in Oakland but that was almost 36 years ago yet here we are in 2009 and pimpin is still being celebrated. Oakland has such a rich history of music from jazz and blues and helped pioneer funk with groups like the legendary Tower of Power all  components that laid the foundation for hip hop. Oakland is about so much more than street life or pimps and hos.

yeah his family may/will get some money, guess where that money is coming from...the taxpayers....

also this show will be about a 'pimp' who's trying to change.  i say let it be filmed and some of these kids can get a break into filmmaking, or just being a gaffer. they can see the making of a show, etc. I see a silver lining in this.

do you know how antoine fuqua got interested into film...some movie was being filmed neear his projects in philly and was allowed to be on the set, play with the cameras, etc.

what flim was being made? don't know. don't care.

the mayor has other shit to worry about, let this show go about.

whatever happened to the wayans brothers who wanted to have a film studio at the old base? didn't the City Council dead that also. that would have create plenty of jobs, they wanted a little 'hollywood'

We've seen this movie before...It was called "Hustle and Flow." We don't need another film about pimps, or pimps getting out the game, or us robbing banks, or being a Menace to Society. These types of images is what makes most of America turn a blind eye to brothers like Oscar Grant or give the cops the benefit of the doubt because in the eyes of many in America, and around the world, we are animals. We're America's Gangsters, we're pimps, our women are whores. And they have that image of us because that's the image we project of ourselves through mediums like film. I suggest we change that image. There is so much more for us to write about. So many more films that we could make that would project a more positive image of us as a people and give opportunities to those of us that seek that opportunity.

Yeah, the city hated on the Wayne Brothers over some weak shit. There studio would have brought a lot of job opportunities and enrichment to the city of Oakland. The old Naval base is just sitting dormant for the most part. I mean, they have hella housing units that was used by service personnel as living quarters just sitting boarded up. But, the actual reason which was just talked about on the news last night, they plan on building more million dollars home. If you are familiar with Alameda, you might have seen or heard about the new homes they built about two years ago which are priced at 800,000-1 million dollars. These homes are fucking trash. I’m talking 2-4 bedrooms, no back yard and they all look the same. One of my co-workers has a friend that bought one a few months after they became available, and had a party for there son. I was like “I’ll go just to check out the house”. Man, when I got inside I couldn’t believe how small it was on the inside, and they paid 900,000 for the damn thing, with a mortgage of three grand a month.
So, that’s what to the how ordeal with the wayn brothers attempts to bring a movie production studio to the bay area. Instead of helping create stability and giving people job opportunities, the city would rather build 1 million dollars that only a selected few can afford.

For those that want to know more about the faulty shit Oakland Police Department has been doing, which would make a better movie then a Pimp that wants out of the game, read this link. It talks about the police officers called “ the RIDERS” that did all kinds of shit to Oakland residents for years before getting caught. Once of the defendants that testified against them was killed Shorty after he took the stand. This article was published by the LA Times.

Plaintiff in Oakland Police Abuse Case Is Killed
By Joel Rubin
June 19, 2003 in print edition B-8
A 19-year-old Oakland man who was recently awarded more than $100,000 in a civil settlement of “the Riders” police corruption case has been killed in an apparent carjacking.
Matthew Watson was shot about 9 a.m. Tuesday on Chester Street in West Oakland. He was transported to Highland Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Watson’s 1990 gray Cadillac Seville was taken from the scene of the shooting, according to Sgt. Brian Medeiros of the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Division. The car was found abandoned Wednesday afternoon by police in nearby Richmond.
Police offered few other details of the killing and would not comment on whether Watson’s killers had targeted the young man specifically.
John Burris, the lawyer who represented Watson – as well as scores of other plaintiffs – in the police corruption case, said Watson may have been killed because of the settlement money he received.
“I had been warning him that when he got the money, people were going to know,” Burris said in a phone interview.
Watson had testified in the criminal trial against now-fired Oakland police officers Clarence Mabanag, Jude Siapno and Matthew Hornung. Dubbed “the Riders,” the three have been charged with the kidnapping, assault and false arrest of suspected drug dealers in West Oakland in 2000. A fourth officer, Frank Vazquez, is thought to have fled to Mexico to avoid the charges against him. The jury in the Riders trial is in its third week of deliberations.
Burris said the former officers picked Watson up off the street, took him to an isolated location and beat him before arresting him on drug possession charges. Watson suffered a badly blackened eye and swollen face at the hands of the accused officers, said Burris, adding that Watson spent several days in jail on the drug charges.
The attorney said it appeared that Watson was killed over a car he purchased with money that he received from the police corruption settlement.
“He didn’t have any other money,” Burris said. “He had wanted to buy a car; it was a big deal for him.”
Given Watson’s young age, Burris considered him to be the most vulnerable of all the plaintiffs in the Riders case, but he also thought Watson might have had a brighter future ahead.
Burris said he had formed an especially close father-and-son like relationship with the young man who, Burris said, had lived an “unstable” and “harsh” life.
“I would take him for a meal at McDonald’s and he would point out the drug dealers,” Burris said. “He would say, ‘I can’t even leave my house.’ ”
Burris said he had encouraged Watson to pursue an education and enroll in the military.
“I thought he had a chance to make it – to survive – and to get out of his community,” Burris said. “But he just couldn’t see himself beyond Oakland, or even beyond West Oakland.”

I don't think Oakland could any worse of a reputation then they already have to be honest.  They have been infamous for high crime rates over the last few decades.  Chances are only people familiar with Oakland will even realize that it's Oakland.  As far as the mayor saying it stops his city from being a model city, it doesn't.  What stops his city from being a model city is the high crime rates, poverty, low property values, etc.  He needs to first address those issues and then worry about how a tv show or movie will effect the view of his city from outsiders.

I knew you are an OG for using the display name of thunder bird and coolaid. Thats some oldschool shit right there. I know you have seen Oakland come a long way through the highs and lows, but I just think this movie or HBO special will not help our situation at all.

@PACER_4_LIFE,
I agree with your statement. Change has to come from within first, but what if that change was happening? Do you think the media would provide any coverage? Do you think the movie would be a bad idea if that was the case?

Just wondering

Once again, another day goes by and I don't see Allhiphop.com talking about Oscar Brown.

They talkeda bout Jena 6 and no disrespect Jena 6 was a nose on a tree.

A black man got shot in the back and killed by Police!!!!

Hip Hop's first real big song was "The Messages".

Public Enemy, NWA and other rappers talked about "Fuck the police" and "Fight The Power". That's more hip hop than who's the best Top 5 dead or alive. As a matter of fact 2 of most everybody's top 5 was killed by senseless gunfire, one of them MIGHT have been murdered by LAPD. get it "PD"!!

Post something about Oscar Grant allhiphop.com or to me you're "Somehiphop.com" and other "Bullshit.com"!!

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

I really didn’t have any resolutions, but now I do. I am going to keep doing what I do. Here we go. Oakland subway police are tripping. A BART police officer was trying to handcuff a man and apparently was overwhelmed at the task. Why? Well, the officer aborted the mission of handcuffing 22-year-old Oscar Grant III and stood above him and fired a shot killing him. This idiot cop did this in front of a bunch of other cops AND a person on a train caught the footage on tape. Grant was facedown on his stomach when this coward killed him. The family has already sued for $25 million and they are hoping to get the city to file murder charges against this rogue cop. How did this happen? Well, about five cops responded to claims of a fight on the train. Grant got up in the mix, but they haven’t stated if he was in the fight.

Here is what a couple witnesses said to policelink.com:

“First, an officer grabbed Oscar by the neck and pushed him against the wall. Oscar didn’t fight him, but he didn’t go down either. He was like, ‘What did I do?’ Then another officer came up with his Taser and held it right in his face. Oscar said, ‘Please don’t shoot me, please don’t Taser me, I have a daughter,’ over and over again, real fast, and he sat down.”
“One officer was kneeling over his neck and head, and another standing over him,” Burris said. “He was not kicking, and one officer was pulling on his arm. The standing officer pulled out his weapon and, within moments, fired the gun into Mr. Grant’s back.”

My family was deep in that drug game with the Flower boys and Felix n them. The thing is, Oakland won't change until people my age (18 and younger), get a better since of direction. I was blessed to have the right people around me to keep me out of all that bullshit. I'm in college because of it. My potnas aint been so lucky. The OG's aint running the blocks no more it's the young niggas. We gotta find an alternative for these kids, so they turn away from the turf. Otherwise I don't see anything changing.

P.S. I knew Oscar Grant I played basketball and went to church with him back in the day. This shit has left a sour ass taste in my mouth. People wonder why cops get shot at everytime they drive down Seminary. This is why.

The Hughes Brothers’ latest project Gentlemen of Leisure has come under fire by city officials "who worry about the effect the new HBO drama will have on the world’s view of Oakland."
***************************

Ok, so let I get this straight  (not a typo):

Killing an unarmed 22yr old Black father/BART passenger on New Years' Eve, after being cuffed & detained, face down & shot in the back, is a small issue in regards of the world's view of Oakland...... compared to a(nother) movie about a pimp??

A Black man's life still ain't taken seriously... not even after that life as been seriously taken.

I lived in The Town, Hayward & Tracy for the better part of 10yrs & rode BART more times than I can count.  This coulda easily been me, sumone I know, sumone you love, etc

Personally, I could give a shit-less if the movie is made or not.  I believe it woulda been more newsworthy if the Town residents took a grassroots approach & wanted to boycott the movie in efforts to denounce the "City of Dope/Pimpology' stigma... but for city officials to stand up & speak against it NOW is pretty fucked up.

But since they're so concerned with the outside world's opinion of Oakland, I say this:

Justice for Oscar Grant..... or ressurect Huey.

Choose wisely, becuz the world IS watching.

@E.S.O. Boy ,
You are so right. Its not the current generations fault for being so mentally lost, its there elders fault. All the OG's that ran the block with some kinds of sense is dead or in jail. Nobody bothered to teach them the pros/cons of the game. They seen them making money and ran with it. You got out of that situation, good for you and bless you parents and family for making sure you stayed focused and didn't stray to far left. I'm only 30 years old, and I seen the game change so much sense I was running the streets in the early 90s. I pray and hope your generation and the generation that will come from your generation will see this is nothing more then genocide.

There will be a protest at fruitvale Bart today at 3pm, and also a conference at the Alameda court house in downtown, plus Oscars funeral is today.

Come on you gotta be kidding me why these dudes love pimpin so much. The town (Oakland for you the tardy folks) does have a deep history in pimpin but so does the  City (SF). Probraly more of a history than the town they definetly have the most famous pimp.. Oakland is where the Panthers started at where the rock cocaine experiment was launched you can talk about many other things than pimpin. What is that movie going to do make all the young black men stop lkilling each other and pimp? Please. Everytime these dudes do a black movie it has to be negative.
Cops shooting brothas while they laying face down and they want to do a pimpin movie I hope them town niggaz run them out the city.

RIP to Oscar Grant. That pig stole his life.  Majority of cops be on a power trip.  I've been stopped walking, driving, and riding a bike. Another thing is the cops are from the peer group; now I got do deal with punk police the same age as me--compared to when I was a teen and they had that elder authority over me.  My blood pressure rise every time I encounter a police officer. First thing that register is "Enemy" when I make eye contact with the so-called peace officers.  Fools be looking at me like they want to murk ya boy while I'm heading to my job.

They killed a brother in my town named Jahar Perez back in 2004 for nothing.  The whiteboy was same age as us; a punk ass sheltered coward who's following the blueprint designed by his elders.  One cop tasered Jahar right after he got shot by another devil cop after disputing why he was pulled over.  The man was strapped in his seat belt according to plenty of eye witnesses when the pigs killed him.  Unfortunately these stories are not unique and never make it to national headlines because they happen in smaller cities.  Be safe black men and anybody else who know somebody who's been murdered or victimized by those who suppose to protect and serve.
