Essence Magazine has released its list of the 25 Most Influential of 2008 and Hip-Hop artists hold 5 of the top ten spots, with Queen Latifah leading the pack.

The list, which recognizes 25 distinguished African-Americans who have made a difference in 2008, features a cross section of politicians, journalists, activists and celebrities, with President-elect Barack Obama holding the top position.

“President-elect Obama’s historic win was the pinnacle of an amazing year in African-American achievement,” said the magazine’s editor-in-chief Angela Burt-Murray. “Essence is so proud to acknowledge the top 25 African-Americans who followed suit with extraordinary steps in news, music, film, politics, activism and fashion and emerged as the game changers of 2008.

Latifah landed at the number five position on the list, just four spots after the new Commander-in-Chief to be, and two spots behind journalist Gwen Ifill, whom she famously portrayed in Saturday Night Live’s spoof of the vice-presidential debate in October.

The pioneering rapper/actress has had a busy year helping redefine the concepts of weight loss and healthy living as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and continuing her role as celebrity spokesperson for Cover Girl cosmetics, Curvation ladies underwear and Pizza Hut.

She also enjoyed the success of three hit films in 2008, including most recently the critically acclaimed The Secret Life of Bees, alongside Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Dakota Fanning.

The list was released just days after Queen Latifah was announced as the host of the 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards, which will air on
January 7, 2009.

She is also reportedly working on a new album due out next year, which will be her first Hip-Hop release since 1998 despite two albums in between.

The new offering will feature production by Dr. Dre and Swizz Beatz with appearances by Dr. Dre, Ludacris, and Missy Elliot.

Immediately following Queen Latifah at the number six position is Will Smith, who has made his mark in the film industry both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

In addition to his starring role in this year’s anti-hero film Hancock, which grossed close to $620 million worldwide, Smith also produced the film as well as the Samuel L. Jackson crime thriller Lakeview Terrace and The Secret Life of Bees.

Closing out the Hip-Hop representation on the 25 Most Influential List were Wyclef Jean, Kanye West, and will.i.am in the seventh, eighth and ninth positions respectively.

Kanye West was recognized for his musical contribution and altruism especially since the death of his mother Dr. Donda West, while Wyclef and will.i.am were both heralded for their political and social activism.

Real positive look at Hip-Hop, if they would have said lil wayne, jeezy, ti, rick ross, Solijah boy, or anyother artist thats is less polished than the ones they selected, I would have thrown up my lunch.  All the above make entertaining music but none can influence me to do or be anything, Kanye was kinda suspect!

@ Everyone

Please don't ask Nia B to apologize for her comments about Nelly learning the hard way with the death of his sister.  Its funny because she try's to sound so perfect and good but has the nerve to imply that Cornell's sister deserved to die because the his video.  she sounds like a women scorn, with very low self esteem who looks to find joy in other people pain.  Pretty nasty lady and you cant reason with people like that, sound like one of you brothers done messed up her credit and put a rack of miles on her car.

Nia you need to go out and have a one night stand cause you got alot of built up tension!!!  And don't lie to us and say you got a man cause we aren't buying it.  Come out the bat cave mama.....................

With all due respect, how can Will Smith be after Queen Latifah? Will Smith produced Secret life of Bees, That means Queen latifah, alicia keys, jennifer hudson all work for Will Smith. Not to mention his networth is crazy, I haven't read the article but I hope Michele Obama is in there. So all u sisters out there better bring your game up because just shaking your ass ain't going to get it. (yes I said ain't)

Mr. Wicked Jones did not understand being a spokesperson to get healthier.  Diabetes is a danger for minorities.  This list is about importance, not money.  Always has to an idiot to try to shit on positivity.  Why can't you say good for the two of them?

Am I missing something here? I don't show anything about diabetes. Im not saying queen latifah shouldn't be on here because she should. I'm just saying from a position of power and influence, I can't see how she's above will smith, and Im not will smiths biggest fan. not to mention the stuff he did in africa, the school he opened here and so on. I guess LL cool J should be on here for doing Old Spice commercials. What about that black doctor on fat club, oh I forgot he's not famous enough.

You are the 2nd person 2day that trick me into calling them a DUMB ASS! Its a syndrome of disordered metabolism, usually due to a combination of hereditary and environmental causes, resulting in abnormally high blood sugar levels.....I'm sorry your the idiot

co-sign anyone askin why queen latifah is higher than will on this list, but i'm also confused by something else?

"The pioneering rapper/actress has had a busy year helping redefine the concepts of weight loss and healthy living as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and continuing her role as celebrity spokesperson for Cover Girl cosmetics, Curvation ladies underwear and Pizza Hut."

Yo u promote weight loss and healthy living, but still a spokesperson for Pizza Hut? LMAO this conflict of interest is hilarious!!
