i read a piece on richard collier on espn.com back when he initially got shot but i never heard anything in follow-up until i read about the number of rounds he took, paralysis, and the amputation last week....thats a terrible thang man..smh...my prayers are with him and his family...that is a true tragedy.

my condolences go out to the bryant family as well...matt showed tremendous strength going out and performing his job at the same level.

i want to touch on something alot of you cats may not know. matt bryant is a recent example, but probably the most memorable example of what i'm about to drop is bret farve's miracle game on monday night football (i believe, i'm doing this off the top of my head ya'll). alot of fans believe that these guys go out and play football with heavy hearts after the death of an immediate family member due to a "love for the game," or some kinship with their team mates....in some respects, that may be true, but the main factor is probably that the nfl is the only professional sport in the united states that does not provide grievance time off for its players...the nba does it, major league baseball does it, as well as the nhl.

I found this article from 2007 when Jags WR Troy Williamson, had an issue with the Vikes when his grandmother, who raised him, passed away and the Vikes docked him a game check.

"Finally, the NFL has a collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association (the players union). Bereavement leave, like 100s of other benefits and conditions of employment, is a negotiated topic. To secure this benefit for the players, the NFLPA must bargain and then negotiate the benefit. If they didn't do that on behalf of their membership, then that's part of the deal in being organized. It's the NFLPA's responsibility, not the NFL's."

Truthfully speaking, Bereavement Leave shouldn't have to be negotiated in a Union Contract or a players contract. If it is negotiated, it should be the amount of time taken during the leave depending on the situation and the relation to the deceased.

For example, if one of my parents were to pass away, Lord forbid, I get 3-5 business days. If it's an auntie or uncle in N.C. I see maybe once or twice a year, then I get 1 day for Bereavement Leave and the rest comes out of my vacation.

NFL players should be given a certain amount of time for Bereavement Leave. You can make the argument that they only work 6 months out of the year, but when you look at the other things they may do outside of playing football (speaking arrangements, appearances at other engagements, etc...), then they should be allowed for time. Some of these guys don't even live in the same city that they play for, so you gotta allow sometime.

I will say this, it will have to be regulated. Even if it means that there is a person from the league that regularly checks on the player and makes sure his ass ain't "making luv in the club" and is handling family business.

Whoever the next head of the Player's Union will be, needs to seriously take this situation to the table when the discussions for the CBA come up. If the Average Joe can have ample amount of time to take care of deaths in their family, the players should as well.

LOL. I know people who are Correction Officers. Sometimes when they're out on workers' comp, there's a person who calls and checks on them at random times to make sure they're not faking or fucking around and doing dumb shit like a side job or partying.

If Corrections can do that, the league can implement something similar to make sure that dudes aren't wasting their team's time.

I remember that Williamson got that money back, but he got it after the Vikes got a lot of criticism from news outlets.
