Okay folk’s, we have gotten through the first quarter of the season and what a 1st four weeks it has been. If the 1st four weeks have been this crazy, imagine what is in store for the remainder of the season. It is enough to make a person drink.

Thankfully, I just stocked up the old liquor cabinet, so I am good to go for the remainder of the season. We have a lot to get into, so let’s go.

Lil Wayne’s ESPN Blog

Lil Wayne is up and running again on the online edition of ESPN the Magazine. This week he talks about his pick for the World Series, Brett Favre’s performance, and the Tar Heels.

Once again, it is a solid read and if you want to check it out, click here.

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week for Week 06

Poll Answers

ALLHipHop’s NFL Game of the Week

Sunday, 10/05/08, 1pm

Washington Redskins (3-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-2)

Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA

I have been impressed the Redskins for the past two weeks. Last Sunday’s win against the Cowboys was big and it is exactly what that teams need to get their momentum going as the season continues.

The Eagles made to many mental mistakes in the Sunday Night game against the Bears. If you think Andy Reid will let their performance from Sunday Night slide, you are sadly mistaken.

The Redskins know that they have to keep that momentum going if they want to continue winning in the league’s toughest division, and with the Eagles hurting with injuries, the Skins look to be the favorite in this game.

My Pick: Redskins

Sunday, 10/05/08, 1pm games

Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) at Carolina Panthers (3-1)

Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

The Chiefs won last Sunday, Yippee! I hope that they can use last week’s win to get things going and pile some more numbers in the “wins” column. The Panthers’ offense, especially their passing game, looks to be a monster this season. It definitely helped them with their win against Atlanta last Sunday.

As happy as I am to see the Chiefs get the win, it is sad to see this victory celebration cut short.

The Panthers’ offense is starting to click in the passing game. With the league’s 8th best defense and an offense that is starting to find its place, the Panthers look to be a hell of a test for the Chiefs. Then again, some of us thought the Broncos were going to be a test for the Chiefs last Sunday.  How did that turn out?

For now, I’ll take my chances a stay with the Panthers.

My Pick: Panthers

Tennessee Titans (4-0) at Baltimore Ravens (2-2)

M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD

The Titans keep winning with solid defense and an offense that does just enough to get by.  The Ravens lost a rough one to the Steelers in the Monday Night game and are looking for redemption with a win this weekend.

Although the Ravens did not win the game, you still have to be impressed that the offense moved the ball well in the later stages of the game with rookie QB Joe Flacco.

The Titans have the 5th best defense in the league and with a veteran QB like Kerry Collins at the helm of their offense going up against a rookie QB like Flacco; the Titans have the edge in this game.

My Pick: Titans

San Diego Chargers (2-2) at Miami Dolphins (1-3)

Dolphin Stadium, Miami, FL

The Dolphins went into their bye week with a solid win against the Patriots. Therefore, you know they are going to bring that momentum with them into Sunday’s game. The Chargers are winners of two games in a row and they are riding a momentum high.

As impressed as I am with the Dolphins’ win from Week 3, the Chargers’ offense is starting to find its rhythm. We have seen what that Chargers’ offense can do once it gets going; it is not a pretty sight. The Chargers will win, but I do believe this will be a close game.

The Dolphins are ranked in the top 15 in offense and defense statistically in the NFL, so they’re coming with some tricks up their sleeves for this Sunday’s game. However, their “football” wizardry will not scare the Chargers this Sunday.

My Pick: Chargers

Seattle Seahawks (1-2) at New York Giants (3-0)

Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

With the Cowboys losing to the Redskins last Sunday, now is the time for the Giants to strike while the iron is hot and add some wins to their NFC East lead. Thankfully for the G-men, their next opponent is a banged up Seahawks squad.

The Seahawks may have had some time to heal during their bye week. It does not matter; the Giants’ defense is too strong. The G-men’s defense is looking to add some more bodies to the Seahawks walking wounded. This game is the Giants to lose.

As long as they keep attacking the Seahawks on defense and the offense doesn’t get too comfortable with their lead, the Giants should walk away with the win.

My Pick: Giants

Indianapolis Colts (1-2) at Houston Texans (0-3)

Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX

I am going with the safe bet for this game and roll with the Colts. I have to be honest, the Colts are also suffering from the injury bug, but the Texans have done nothing so far this year to make me want to give them the edge.

The Colts had their bye last week; that gave them the opportunity to rest up some of their injured players. The only reason I am giving the Colts the nod for this weekend’s game is because they have the better personnel on the team and the Texans have not been able to piece things together so far this year.

My Pick: Colts

Atlanta Falcons (2-2) at Green Bay Packers (2-2)

Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI

With Aaron Rodger’s status up in the air, Ryan Grant’s rushing performance thus far, and the injuries in the Packers’ secondary, I’m going out on a limb and take the Falcons in this game.

The Falcons can run the ball and are ranked 10th in the league on offense while the Packers are ranked 26th in total defense.  The Packers’ defense is off track now and the Falcons offense may have their number this Sunday.

My Pick: Falcons

Chicago Bears (2-2) at Detroit Lions (0-3)

Ford Field, Detroit, MI

The Bears defense was on point against the Eagles and what better way to build on that confidence than to face the Lions.

The Lions are ranked 32nd on defense and 26th on offense in the league. ‘Nuff said.  It’s safe to say that this game belong to the Bears.

My Pick: Bears

4 pm games

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) at Denver Broncos (3-1)

Invesco Field, Denver, CO

The Bucs won a close game against the Packers while the Broncos handed the Chiefs their first win of the season. Do not worry Bronco fans; you will be fine this weekend.

Brian Griese is looking for a little revenge this weekend against his old team, but that will not happen because the Broncos’ defense will back up the league’s top offense.

This game will be close, but with the “Mile High” crowd backing them up, the Broncos walk out with the win this Sunday.

My Pick: Broncos

Cincinnati Bengals (0-4) at Dallas Cowboys (3-1)

Texas Stadium, Irving, TX

The Cowboys are not happy about losing last Sunday and you can best believe that they will take it out on the Bengals. The Bengals are going through some issues right now.

Between the injuries and the lack of effort from the players on the Bengals, the Cowboys should win this game. As long as there are no outside distractions, the Cowboys should put this away easily.

My Pick: Cowboys

Buffalo Bills (4-0) at Arizona Cardinals (2-2)

University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ

The Cards offense was hot for the first two games of the season. Then it just cooled off their last two games. The Bills have been finding ways to win games this year and are making a serious case for the AFC East title this year.

The Cards’ offense took a serious hit last week in the Jets game and thankfully, things are all right off the field. On the field, things will not be all right against the Bills this weekend. The Bills offense is doing well and with the Cards’ defense spotting the Jets 56 points last week; look for the Bills to come into Arizona hoping to double that score.

My Pick: Bills

New England Patriots (2-0) at San Francisco 49ers (2-2)

Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA

The 49ers could not move the ball on offense this past Sunday against the Saints. So do you think they have a chance against the veteran defense of the Patriots? I am going to have to say no to that one.

Bill Belichick will not allow his team to lose two games in a row. The Pats were off last week, so they are well rest and prepared for this Sunday’s game. Sorry Niner fans, this may be a bad weekend for us.

My Pick: Patriots

Sunday Night Football, 8pm

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2)

Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, FL

In a rematch from one of last year’s Wild Card match-ups, the Steelers roll in to Jacksonville after a great over time win from Monday Night.

The Jags rushing offense is beginning to step up at the right time.  Their offense is ranked 15th in the league while their defense is ranked 18th. The Steelers’ defense is ranked 2nd in the league while their offense is ranked 29th.  The Steelers’ offense is hurting in the rushing department and with the Jags having the home field advantage, I going to roll with the Jags in this one.

My Pick: Jaguars

Monday Night Football, 10/06/08, 8:30pm

Minnesota Vikings (1-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-2)

Superdome, New Orleans, LA

The Vikes gave up 30 points to the Titans. That is something the 4th ranked defense in the league should not do. The Saints scored 31 points against the 49ers. That is something the 4th ranked offense in the NFL should do.

The Saint’s offense is too much for the Vikes “shell shocked” defense. The Vikes may have the 6th best defense in the league, but the Saints have the 3rd best offense in the league and is too much for the Vikes “shell shocked” defense.

My Pick: Saints

Prayers and Blessings

Before we get go, we want to extend our prayers to the families of Richard Collier and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant.

Collier and former teammate Kenneth Pettway was involved in a shooting on September 2, 2008. Collier suffered numerous injuries and his doctors reported that he is now paralyzed below the waist and has had his left leg amputated.

Before the Bucs took on the Packers last Sunday, Matt Bryant lost his 3-month old son last week Wednesday. Despite the lost in his family, Bryant played last Sunday and kicked an important field goal late in the game that helped the Bucs in their victory.

Both of these men and their families have a difficult path ahead of them during the healing process, but their strength will see them through and their story will be inspiration for all.

Once again, our hearts and prayers go out to Richard Collier and Matt Bryant.

Teams with Bye weeks: Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, New York Jets

Philadelphia Eagles

San Diego Chargers
New York Giants
Indianapolis Colts
Green Bay Packers
Chicago Bears
Denver Broncos
Dallas Cowboys
Buffalo Bills
New England Patriots
Jacksonville Jaguars
New Orleans Saints

i read a piece on richard collier on espn.com back when he initially got shot but i never heard anything in follow-up until i read about the number of rounds he took, paralysis, and the amputation last week....thats a terrible thang man..smh...my prayers are with him and his family...that is a true tragedy.

my condolences go out to the bryant family as well...matt showed tremendous strength going out and performing his job at the same level.

i want to touch on something alot of you cats may not know. matt bryant is a recent example, but probably the most memorable example of what i'm about to drop is bret farve's miracle game on monday night football (i believe, i'm doing this off the top of my head ya'll). alot of fans believe that these guys go out and play football with heavy hearts after the death of an immediate family member due to a "love for the game," or some kinship with their team mates....in some respects, that may be true, but the main factor is probably that the nfl is the only professional sport in the united states that does not provide grievance time off for its players...the nba does it, major league baseball does it, as well as the nhl.
tell me fam, what do ya'll think about that? is that some bullshit? would you go back to work the day after loosing an immediate family member?

------------------------------------------------------------
I found this article from 2007 when Jags WR Troy Williamson, had an issue with the Vikes when his grandmother, who raised him, passed away and the Vikes docked him a game check.

http://www.hrcapitalist.com/2007/11/worklife-balanc.html

here's an excerpt:

"Finally, the NFL has a collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association (the players union).  Bereavement leave, like 100s of other benefits and conditions of employment, is a negotiated topic.  To secure this benefit for the players, the NFLPA must bargain and then negotiate the benefit.  If they didn't do that on behalf of their membership, then that's part of the deal in being organized.  It's the NFLPA's responsibility, not the NFL's."

Truthfully speaking, Bereavement Leave shouldn't have to be negotiated in a Union Contract or a players contract. If it is negotiated, it should be the amount of time taken during the leave depending on the situation and the relation to the deceased.

For example, if one of my parents were to pass away, Lord forbid, I get 3-5 business days. If it's an auntie or uncle in N.C. I see maybe once or twice a year, then I get 1 day for Bereavement Leave and the rest comes out of my vacation.

NFL players should be given a certain amount of time for Bereavement Leave. You can make the argument that they only work 6 months out of the year, but when you look at the other things they may do outside of playing football (speaking arrangements, appearances at other engagements, etc...), then they should be allowed for time. Some of these guys don't even live in the same city that they play for, so you gotta allow sometime.

I will say this, it will have to be regulated. Even if it means that there is a person from the league that regularly checks on the player and makes sure his ass ain't "making luv in the club" and is handling family business.

Whoever the next head of the Player's Union will be, needs to seriously take this situation to the table when the discussions for the CBA come up. If the Average Joe can have ample amount of time to take care of deaths in their family, the players should as well.

LOL. I know people who are Correction Officers. Sometimes when they're out on workers' comp, there's a person who calls and checks on them at random times to make sure they're not faking or fucking around and doing dumb shit like a side job or partying.

If Corrections can do that, the league can implement something similar to make sure that dudes aren't wasting their team's time.

I remember that Williamson got that money back, but he got it after the Vikes got a lot of criticism from news outlets.
