Very informative and well thought out peice. I like that you took the time to support your views with some statistics. I see so many 'lost' children everyday where I live. It's written all over there faces. It's not like the times when I was growing up as a child in the hood...and that was only 10 years ago. I think alot of these children's behaviors are attributed to so many kids having kids. Not that because some parents are young they will automatically fail, it just becomes that much more crucial for them to have a more positive relationship with family to build a stronger foundation for their children. I couldn't begin to tell how many times I've seen parents place themselves before the well-being of their kids. I'm so hurt by this.

Just last weekend, I just had to explain to my sixteen year old neice, who's 7 month's pregnant, that her life is no longer only hers. Whatever she does from this point forward MUST BE for the sake of that unborn child. I also told her that her life isn't over just because she's decided to have this baby, but, she does have to realize that this is a life long sacrifice that she's decided to make, for better or worse, to make sure that that baby grows up strong, healthy, and intelligent. That it would be up to her to see that her child gets everything that it needs. Most importantly, I let her know that though I am disappointed in her choices, I'm there to help her. Along with the rest of my family.

Many of these kids out here are so lost. They don't believe in anything...not even their own self worth, and I think that all starts at home. God bless the kids. The hood needs help...

I co-sign this to the fullest. Parental communication is definately a major issue wit these youngins out here, most of them couldnt sit down and talk to their parent(s) if they wanted to. Just as was said sum are afraid to cuz they dont want to get reprimanded. Also alot of parents gotta stop being so damn naive bout they own kids. Alot of times when sumthin goes down and they child is involved, the parent be like "oh no it couldnt have been my kid, my kid would neva do that". Come on be real, u aint wit ur kid 24/7. U dont kno what he/she is into when they not around yo ass. I dun did so much shit that my mom and dad would neva eva think i would do. Thank god that i have both my parents first of all and also thank god that i have common sense. Wit out that, that dumb shit i used to do would have gotten me in sum deep shit, and MY parents woulda been sayin oh no it couldnt have been him, he wouldnt do nuttin like that. Being a new parent myself im glad i read dis.....not that i really needed this, but it will def keep me on my toes in the future

My niece & Lil' Brother came to spend 3 weeks this summer and automatically i see the misguided generation before me. Nowadays, everything influence these children. So, ONE positive influence will make a difference. Well written article.

True. I happen to be one of those teens (19 y.o.) who never had a real relationship with my parents, despite growing up with both parents until my father died when I was 6. Not just my own, but most, if not all parents I knew as a child were either neglectful or abusive to their children (Btw, they were all in their 30s-40s when they had us, so don't give me that "Only young parents screw their kids up" crap). My parents never told me about issues like sex and drugs. I found out about them through school, TV, and so on. But I had enough common sense to separate good from bad, and I've been clean for almost two decades. Most of my childhood friends couldn't do that, and now they're somewhere portraying at least two teen stereotypes.

1. My childhood best friend (who was abused) drinks, smokes, belongs in a gang, and supposedly got someone pregnant.

2. The most intelligent person I grew up with (who was abused) quit school at age 17 and got pregnant at 20.

3. Another friend wants to form a gang, smokes, and quit school at age 16. Plus, he never learned how to read.

I know parents who refuse to teach their children about drugs, drinking, etc. "until they're old enough", usually meaning when they're about 13 years old. I know parents who would call their preteen daughters sluts just for asking about what sex is. I know parents who, instead of actually teaching their children about important issues, would just say, "If I ever catch you _______, I'll kick your ass." Those people are usually the first to talk about how stupid teenagers and kids are. Though I'm no stranger to ignorant and lazy parents, it sickens me to hear that shit.

Some parents need to stop acting like their job is over just because the woman isn't pregnant anymore. Too many people are out there screaming, "I made you" or "I'm the father/mother", yet they don't really do anything. Buying video games, nice clothes, and giving your kids some decent allowance doesn't necessarily make you a good parent. If that were true, then rich people would make the most perfect parents, wouldn't they? The 50 Cent vs. his ex is a good example of my point. Back on topic, if you're not talking to your children about what the lady who wrote that article said, keep your mouth closed.
