The new kings of comedy have made their impact felt and for the old dogs in the game, namely Ben Stiller, his smart-alecky comedic attempt to reclaim the crown, Tropic Thunder, undeniably provokes a few laughs, but mainly one that comes after a nervous cough.

The star-studded farce makes every effort to be outrageous and controversial (see the blackfaced Robert Downey, Jr. below), as it pokes fun at Hollywood and its stereotype of self-indulged, spoiled drug-abusing thespians. But in Tropic Thunder, Stiller and Jack Black find themselves outshined by Iron Man in a pretty startling and out-there role as Australian Academy Award winner Kirk Lazarus.

The plot is simple as it is a parody of shining stars and their faults. The gags are exaggerated to prove such a point. Black's comedic timing does little to save him as Jeff "Fats" Portnoy, a funnyman-turned-druggie. Black's usually spastic antics are co-signed by the fact that he's such a physical character. In Tropic Thunder, though, Black lacks that same punch that he's known for in solo turns in films like School of Rock and Nacho Libre.

Think of Tropic Thunder as a Rambo-ized version of Zoolander, but without the gut-busting laughs and cathchphrases. Stiller's co-writers, Justin Theroux and Ethan Cohen, pen a nutty tone with each character a stereotype of some sort. If Jack Black is the king of flactulence, Robert Downey, Jr. is the Oscar darling, Brandon T. Jackson plays the seriously-delusional-aspiring hip-hop guy du jour, Alpa Chino. Stiller saves himself best for last as the action-adventure superstar Tugg Speedman...

My girl won some passes off the radio to a sneek preview last night. It definitely had its moments and Robert Downy Jr had alot of respect playin a black cat. From a black perspective I can honestly say he did a really good job. Its sad that the blacks doin comedy are only good at stand up. I havent seen a Waynes or an Eddie Murphy flick that really made me laugh since the days of In Living Colour. That white chicks movie was so cliche and dry I turned it off after the first half hour. On the other hand Tropic Thunder was a good watch, for free mind you. 7/10

Personally, im not offended by Downey playing a black character. David chappell played a white corny ass tv reporter on his show. People need to stop being so butt hurt and taking everything racially, on both sides. But besides all that, the movie look aight, imma tough movie critic. Ill prolly just wait til its out the theater to see it, less my girl wants to, lol

This movie was hilarious. There was never any part where I was offended. If you want to judge the movie and call it offensive without seeing it that's cool, but there was nothing racially motivated about the character.

I'm seeing it, tonight.

I was thinking the same way some folks on here are thinking.  "I'm not watching no movie with someone wearing black face."  I had to read some reviews of this movie first to see if its offensive or not and the majority of the reviews were cool.  However, i will be keeping a eye on white folks, in the theater, around me to see how hard they laugh at Downey Jr.'s character.

Peace and more hair grease,

Hey, i just got back from seeing Tropic Thunder.  I didn't think Downey Jr.'s character was offensive, at all.  My opinion, Downey Jr.'s character wasn't as funny as people said it was.  Every character in the movie had their moments, especially a famous actor playing a hollywood producer.  I think that actor stoled the movie.  Go see it, people.  You will start laughing when it first comes on.

Peace and more hair grease,

I will say that the only demographic that this movie went hard at was the mentally ill.  People with mentally ill folks might catch some feelings.

This movie was toooo damn funny!!!  "You m-m-m-m-make me happy".  They really did go hard at the mentally disabled, but it was funny and in a light-hearted way.  They were really just making fun of all of the people that played mentally disabled people in the past (i.e. Rain Man, Forrest Gump, Sam I Am, etc.).  It makes you think, "Should those people who played the mentally disabled be critiqued as offensive in their roles."  They went just as far or further than Ben Stiller in this movie, the only difference being this is a comedy and the others were dramas.

RDJ is a reborn star!  He killed his part, for real!  His whole swag in the film was crazy.  He wasn't being offensive at all in the role.  The best part was that they had a black guy say the things to him that we would say about him in the theater.

One of the funniest movies I've seen in a very, very long time.  I can't remember the last time I laughed through almost an entire movie.

ALL HOPE IS ALMOST GONE...IT'S GOING TO BE HARD FOR OUR DREAMS OF FINALLY HAVING A MINORITY IN THE PRESIDENTIAL SEAT SINCE OBAMA HAS ANNOUNCED Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. OBAMA's first step to gain ground against MCCAIN is confusing but I hope it was the right decision. I was personally hoping he would have pick Hillary Clinton. I will not be surprised if Hillary Clinton end up back in the election just to take votes from Mccain. That's the only way I can see OBAMA winning.
