Those who create popular art often characterize their creations as being a “reflection of reality,” a mirror image that reflects the world around us. I’ve always thought that description was somewhat misleading. Popular art doesn’t so much reflect “reality” as it reflects what we as a society believe to be real - or what we think is real.

When it comes to human beings, everything is based on perception. The creative minds behind our popular art forms are still human. The art an artist creates is largely informed by how he perceives the world around him. Perception often varies from person to person. We all have our own way of seeing the world. However, there are constants and similitudes. These similarities are what popular artists often zero in on.

Movies, in particular, have always been plugged directly into our collective Id. They don’t reflect our reality so much as they reflect what we, as a society, have on our minds, our desires and our perceptions.

Most intriguing though, is what the movies reveal about how we see each other. Over the years, films like Do The Right Thing, Crash and Babel have given us an artistic glimpse of the narrow perceptions people often have of each other, and the ways we view each other in terms of labels and categories.

Nothing is wrong with these labels in and of themselves. The problems occur when we are unable to see past these labels and put them in their proper context. We begin to see each other as types, a set of predetermined characteristics that fit neatly into a box. No form of art reflects this tendency in human beings more than the movies.

It is important to note that we, as a society, tend to be selective in terms of what stereotypes we will or won’t allow. For example, Black folks tend to rail against hood flicks and rap videos that promote stereotypical images, only to applaud so-called “positive” black films and shows that also contain stereotypical images.

The films and plays of Tyler Perry are chock full of stereotypes and caricatures, but are given a pass because they promote “positive” and Christian messages. In my mind, a stereotype is a stereotype. They all lend themselves to limited thinking, and make it easier to place those who are different from us into a box.

It’s kind of silly to get mad at our popular artists for reflecting these tendencies back to us, but I’m sure we will continue to do so. Here are a few upcoming films that are sure to offend someone in the coming months:

Tropic Thunder (August 13)

In this action/comedy directed by Ben Stiller, three self-indulgent movie stars (Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr.) are cast in an expensive epic film about the Vietnam war. The production team decides to abandon the troublesome trio in the jungle when their diva-like behavior becomes too much to bear. The actors themselves are completely unaware of their predicament. They still think they are filming a war movie, when in fact they are in the middle of a real war. Hilarity ensues.

Robert Downey Jr. plays actor Kirk Lazarus. Lazarus is cast in the role of Sgt. Osiris, a character who was originally written as African-American. Being the consummate method-actor, Lazarus decides to play the role as written. He even goes so far as to dye his skin in order to play the part “convincingly.”

I’ll start off by admitting that I find the basic idea behind the Kirk Lazarus to be quite amusing. The guy obviously takes himself and his craft way too seriously. As described, he comes off as the very embodiment of pretense. This is the kind of thing that can go either way. It will either be the funniest performance in quite some time, or the 21st century version of Soul Man.

For Robert Downey Jr.’s sake, I hope it’s the former instead of the latter. He has generated a substantial amount of goodwill via his star-making turn as Tony Stark in Iron Man. I’d really hate to see him squander that so soon.

Towelhead (August 15)

Jasinda, a young Arab Girl, is sent to live with her strict Lebanese father in a small Texas town. This living situation forces her contend with a number of social issues that cause her personal turmoil. She is confronted with racism both inside and outside her home. Her neighbors and classmates harbor prejudices against Arabs, and her Lebanese father disapproves of her Black boyfriend. As if all of this weren’t enough, Jasinda is trying to understand her budding sexuality and raging hormones.

Wow! This is such a potential powder keg... I don’t know where to start. The movie has already made quite a splash at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals. This film contains a number of issues that Americans have a hard time dealing with, not the least of which is a 13-year-old girl coming to grips with her sexuality. That alone is more than enough to send the more conservative audiences into a panic.

The film also examines how foreigners sometimes take on the bigoted attitudes of Americans not out of malice, but simply out of a desire to fit in. Jasinda’s fathers’ racism is motivated by his concern for his daughter. How will she be accepted in American society if she dates a Black man?

Lakeview Terrace (September 19)

Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington play Chris and Lisa Mattson, an interracial couple who have just moved into their dream home. Their next door neighbor, LAPD Officer Abel Turner (Samuel L Jackson), doesn’t approve of interracial marriages. He starts harassing the Mattsons on a regular basis, and as it escalates into outright terrorism, the young couple has no choice but to retaliate.

Again, one cannot avoid parallels to an older film. In this case it would be 1992's Unlawful Entry, in which Ray Liotta played a mentally disturbed cop who begins stalking a rich couple after responding to a break in at their home. That film was something of a guilty pleasure in its day, as essentially a well made B-movie. With the backing of Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment, Lakeview Terrace looks to be very much in the same vein, only this time the antagonist is Black. Could that be considered a sign of progress?

Maybe, on some level, I guess it’s good that Hollywood now sees its way clear to allow Black actors to portray villains in B-Level thrillers. The motivation of the Abel Turner character is also interesting. Now, Black villains are allowed to be just as hateful as their white counterparts.

Someone will definitely have an issue with Tropic Thunder, especially if it "crosses the line".   I wouldn't be surprised if some black actors had a problem with it also.  I can see them getting upset at the fact that a white man dresses in black face and takes a role that could have been theirs...kind of like insult to injury since Hollywood isn't throwing many roles their way in the first place.

I haven't heard about the other 2 movies but I'm sure somebody somewhere will find something to be pissed about.

Such hypocrites!!!  How come Dave Chapelle, Eddie Murphy, Martin, etc. do white face and there not be any retaliation???  Hell, even T-Pain did white face!  We have got to stop chasing racism!  If you're going to claim racism at every turn, make it apply to all forms of racism, not just that against black people.

That's the funny thing about some people.  They claim to hate racism, but they really only hate it when it's focused towards them.  A black person can say "that white boy" but God forbid a white person say "that black boy".  A black person can call a white person any derogatory name in the book (honkey, cracker, etc.) but don't like it when someone calls them a nigger, coon, etc.  It's just ass backwards to me.

I might say "that white guy from work", but I wouldn't get mad if someone referred to me as "that black guy from work".  I don't call white people derogatory names, so I don't expect them to do it to me.

From what I've seen of the Tropic Thunder trailers, the writers/actors know the impact of how offensive an actor performing in blackface is, and they seem to be addressing it within the film. Brandon Jackson plays more of the "voice of reason" as he's questioning Downey's character about various things.

I agree with the author, Malice, on this when I say I hope that this isn't a step back for Robert Downey Jr. too. Given his amazing career, I don't think he'd do something that doesn't make sense... I guess we'll see when the movie comes out.

They permit and deny certain entertainment visions. 'X' by Spike Lee was almost shut down because of road blocks in the business that didnt want him remembered. Lee later had to raise the money for the film himself through various private lenders. 2Pac was printed in the paper as a ' rapist', in the end he was only ever charged with assault of the buttocks, touching a gals booty on a dance floor!! An he was put in jail with a million dollar bail? Hell the media even had yall against Michale Jackson sayn hes a child molester and he bleaches his skin. Man has a skin disorder and a disney style ranch for sick kids cuz when he was young his childhood was robbed by the fame he had in Jackson 5, on top of that his dad boned all the groupies 12-25 and forced him to watch. Still Chappell did a skit on him and so did the Wayans brothers. When he was in court no fuckin rappers were doin support songs cuz the system had blanketed him and manipulated our own intuition. Did O.J do it? Only GOD knows, but I will tell you over 1000 innocent Iraqis have been murdered by in this 'war on terror', but will the news report it like it is?  EVERYONE is brainwashed into this or that and a white dude playin a black guy is comedy, now go laugh at a black guy playin a white guy u fkn lame hypocrites.

I think the movie Whiteboyz showed a lot more than white kids just wanting to be "black" - I think it also showed the ignorance that keeps some white kids perpetuating the negative stereotypes of what they think Black people are supposed to act like or be, thinking that's what it takes to be "down."

Yes, to some extent it was over the top, but I think everyone has known someone like that in their lives. Stereotypes suck, but they stem from truth.

------First off it doesn't necessarily matter which actor plays what part. Whether it's a black man playing a white man or a white man playing a black man. If it is about C.O.M.E.D.Y. than why should it really matter? I would understand if it was a racially driven movie that had a lot to do with downing the opposite race but this is clearly not the case. Far too many times to I see white people down Dave Chappelle for potraying a white male. Shit I'M WHITE AND I FIND IT FUNNY AS HELL. Then you hear black people complain about certain acts of violence that automatically put the "you're racist" label on the white race. It all gets old as fuck after a while. It's almost as if we have nothing better to do with our lives than to sit on our lazy asses and try to blame others for something that shouldn't really be blown out of proportion. Each of us (meaning both sides of the race) have something to complain about. When do we shut the fuck up and just go on about our business? I'm getting really tired of seeing Al Sharpton run his cock sucker about something completely stupid. Personally I hope someone assasinates that bitch. I would be happy as fuck if that happend. It's not a matter of me being racist, it's a matter of me getting sick and tired of both races going at each other. I FUCKING HATE Bill O' Rielly (or however you spell his name) Shit the same person who assasinates Al Sharpton needs to do Billy Boy in also. Both are "powerful figures" for both races and both annoy the living fuck out of me. It's time to stop complaining and go on about our ways. The whites "abused" the blacks for hundreds of years and the blacks in turn took the NBA from us and made it fun to watch. So now we are even!!-------------

A friend of mine sent me this thread and now I feel obliged to give my opinion.  Thanks Nicole (sarcasm).

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry – great premise and made the point that we need to give same sex relationships the same rights as heterosexual ones.  Problem was, you had Rob Schneider playing an Asian guy right out of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (offensive).  Second problem was, they promoted prejudice by manipulating the system.  The big speech at the end tried to rectify that but after an hour and fifteen of manipulation, it still left a half-baked attempt at a pro gay right’s film.  Better than nothing right?  Maybe.

White Chicks – funny movie and yes, I can see how this would be offensive to white women.  Weird how this didn’t get any national “offensive” press.

Tyler Perry movies do offend me with their stereotypes and I therefore, STOPPED SUPPORTING THEM.  But guess what?  These stereotypes need to be shown because these stereotypes exist and need to cease and desist.  Welfare mothers (who abuse the system) need to be a thing of the past.  Drug dealers killing people needs to be a thing of the past.  Black people, rappers, actors, etc. saying nigger-this and nigger-that needs to be a thing of the past.  My point is that the stereotypes don’t bother me.  It’s the way they are portrayed in his movies.  I just don’t like his movies.

Chappelle Show – Satire - the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices.  He not only made fun of white people, but African-Americans, Asians, etc.  Everyone found this show funny because everyone could relate.  It related to everyone because it was well written and well done.

“Nappy headed ho’s” – Imus and his producer needed to be fired for being stupid not racist.  Did I find his comment offensive?  No.  Did my mother?  Hell yeah she did and when she explained why, I understood.  Mom – “Calling a woman a “ho” is offensive and sexist (true – are you reading this rappers out there?), calling a woman a “nappy headed ho” is racist because he was referring specifically to black women AND it is HISTORICALLY racist.  He is of the age where he knows better.”  My mom was right.  I can’t believe after all these years; she still manages to be right all the time.

Team America – Political Satire – Made fun of all people and races AND, in my opinion, like the Chappelle Show, this is the only satire that works.  You have to go all the way, take a risk and hope it works.  They did.  Did I find the Asian terrorist funny?  Not really, but I saw their point.

New Yorker Magazine cover – Satire (so they say).  Problem is, no one knows it’s satire without a caption or explanation on the damn cover!  Therefore, I find it offensive.  And, please, someone explain to me why they put an afro on my man’s wife?

Tropic Thunder – I, nor most of you, haven’t seen it.  I hope it is satire.  It looks like it could be a funny satirical movie on the obnoxious behavior of out-of-control actors.  I can watch the local news for this, but some may want to pay $10 for the pretty colors. Let’s just hope they accurately portray the Vietnamese people.  We (Americans) have a history of not portraying races, other than white, accurately.  WHICH IS WHY DOWNEY, JR. IN BLACK-FACE COULD BE A VERY BAD IDEA, especially if the writer, director, producer is white, and last time I checked, Ben Stiller is white.

People need to remember that whites in this country have a HISTORY of portraying black people in a negative light.  Blackface is HISTORICALLY offensive.  Therefore, Tropic Thunder, damn well better address that or it will be offensive.  I have to believe they will until someone tells me otherwise or it comes on cable because I am not going to give the movie my hard earned money.

Off-topic, Thin-skin means you let things get to you.  Thick-skin means you have thick skin and things bounce of you and don’t affect you.

Everyone in this thread has a valid point and they have a right to be heard.  I do believe there is an answer that will make everyone happy.  The answer doesn’t lie in someone like REV. Al Sharpton or REV. Jesse Jackson (in light of his recent comments, the reverend prefix is now obviously a joke).  The answer doesn’t lie in John McCain or Barack Obama, who has already begun to weather racism from whites and blacks alike.  The answer doesn’t lie in musicians, actors, rappers who are in service for themselves and for money.

The answers lie in the mothers and fathers who say,  “Don’t let me ever hear you say that again,” when someone says the word “Nigger or Cracker or Sand Nigger or Bitch or Ho or Faggot, or Muslim (Joke folks:  since when is Muslim a negative word?  Since American’s made it one; see how that works New Yorker Magazine?).”

If one of my friends says, “Cracker or Nigger or Nappy Headed Ho,” it’s the last thing they say in my presence.  I believe this is the answer.  If EVERYONE stops tolerating and supporting bull#@!!, there will be no more bull#@!!.  Segregation would still be legal if people didn’t say, “Hold up, this ain’t gonna go down anymore!”  Women not being able to vote would still be legal if people tolerated it.  Gay bashing would still be okay if people tolerated it.

These wrongs only existed in the first place because people didn’t say, “Hold up, this ain’t gonna happen.”

Let’s stop trying to ignore, downplay and justify things we know are offensive to others.  Everyone has a right to be sensitive, even “overly” sensitive.  Let’s not forget the history behind the sensitivity.  I thought my mother was being “overly” sensitive until she explained to me why what Imus said offended her.  I’m not a black woman that grew up in the sixties.  But I can understand how a black woman who grew up in the sixties would be offended by Imus’ comment.  I can now understand how any woman could be offended by that comment.

We all know right from wrong.  Funny or not we know right from wrong.  A white man in black-face is wrong because of the HISTORY of it.  IF Downey, Jr. being in black-face is in the service of showing how and why it’s wrong.  If Tropic Thunder does that in a comedic way, then more power to it.  I hope it does because, like many of you, I am a fan of Robert Downey, Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black.  If you read all this….WOW.

“None of us made the world the way it is, but all of us can change the way it is.  And we can do it in a day as long as all of us stand up and say, “No More No Way.” …rm

In response to your question,  although not exactly the same circumstance  Jamie Kennedy played a white rapper trying to act the way he thought he needed to be to fit in with a certain group.   admittedly in the movie that group was black rappers.    So again not exactly the same but the entire movie made fun of a stereotype of the worse (stupidest) part of the hip-hop culture.
I also think  The-R made a better example with White Chicks.
the point is, a comedy makes fun of certain races, situations, events, stereotypes etc.  especially true with stand up comedy.  So if we can make fun of ourselves (our own race)  why can we not in good sport make fun of each other?   As long as they arent out there dropping the N word every other word then I think it should be taken as it was intended, as entertainment.

I'm moving out of the country, cause you niggas/crackas get on my damn nerves everyday with this racial shit. Can't even watch a fuckin movie or tv show without someone getting their feelings hurt! That's why we have freedom of press! On a more serious note though...

We all give certain shows/movies/music passes on their sterotypes otherwise we wouldnt have shit to watch or listen to. Think about this, who would want to watch a movie that wasnt "real" to some degree? Imagine tryin to watch boondocks, south park, or family guy without any type of sterotypes? There wouldnt be any! I like to see niggas acting stupid such as in boondocks but I like seeing niggas being successful such as Dennis Haysbert playing the part of P.O.T.U.S in 24.

Blasphemy....

Black Face is not the case here, I refuse to co-sign that shit.

I saw Tropic Thunder last night, and I must say that I went in skeptical about how the Kirk Lazaruz character would come off playing the role of an African American in the film. RDJ did an excellent job of playing a white man who was stereotyping a Black man's character... it'll make more sense when you actually see it. Brandon Jackson does a good job of being offended for everyone, and it all ends up being pretty funny.

That said, full review is coming closer to the film release. Word to Tom Cruise...

letting him act like he's black. so what? we are too sensitive we're so worried about the white worlds view of us that we don't give a fuck about how we view each other. we really need to stop giving a fuck about anything white people say or think about us. police brutality is one thing but this ain't shit but a movie. we talk about white folks all the time. they talk about us. we have a love/hate relationship. i'm to the point where they can say whatever the fuck they want but firing 51 bullets at our brothers and sisters is where our outrage should go. fuck how anyone views of us. we need to become isolationists and just focus on our community and our growth. we've been making money in this country long enough to have major financially independent thriving african centers in this nation but were so ashamed of where we come from we can't but a house in the hood. our celebrites and rich can't build banks in the hood but can build fucking custom car shops and slave food restaurants. we don't invest positively in the growth of our communities. we litter our streets. our neighborhoods don't have to look shitty. we gotta stop trying to catch up to white folks in one stimulus check and start investing in our community and ourselves. fuck what they think. FUCK WHITE PERCEPTION! if we don't like how white people portray us in white movies fuck white movies. we can make our own movies. i don't care if hollywood isn't offering black jobs we can create our own film jobs. we don't have to spend our money on this film or in hollywood. just like with music our actors and actresses sell out. do some bafoonery for cotton with white slave masters on them. we don't have any confidence in anything black. maybe if we started focusing our art on our people, our culture, our heritage, our skin, our soul and not always victimizing ourselves and our surroundings we wouldn't cry about how white people view us because we wouldn't even be paying attention. because regardless of the power of this government it's OUR community and any barrier they place in our way we can break. we just have to get over the white perception of our people.

Hey Malice so I saw Tropic Thunder last night and put your bad memories of C. Thomas Howell in black face away cause it's not even close lol. The thing about this movie is yeah RDJ is in blackface but it's handled tastefully at least enough so that I don't see black folks that sit through the film getting all aggy. If anybody is going to be pissed it's hollywood in general. I didn't expect this to be a satire of the complete system but it is and that's why I'm somewhat surprised a major studio okayed it.

Everybody gets shitted on throughout the flick. From washed up one note comedians (Ie: Mike Myers and yes as much as it saddens me to say 2000-era Eddie Murphy) to the effeminate action heroes that this decade has produced (Matt Damon, Orlando Bloom). To of course method actors (like Daniel Day-Lewis and the late Heath Ledger which is what RDJ's role is all about) and the reason some actors will get cast against type.

Most importantly the real villain of the piece is a studio bigwig if you're familiar with hollywood CEO stories and the evil they contain he will probably be the funniest character to you. It also helps that the actor they got is a huge star who probably took the role cause he's had some backlash these past couple of years. Coincidentally he also runs a studio right now which is why I'm more surprised he took the part but he has a new found respect from me for even doing it. I didn't recognize him under the prosthetic make up at first but it's such a nice surprise that I won't ruin it
