Dark Knight Nears: Batman Flix Redux

A mere mortal relying as much on wit and intelligence as he does brawn, DC Comics’ Batman is a character ranking up there in popularity with Superman and Spiderman. The Batman franchise of films has been much beloved and much maligned. A tricked out Batmobile, yes. Nipples on the frikkin’ Batsuit, negative.

With the upcoming release of The Dark Knight, here is a look at some past Batman flicks to get you set for that highly touted sequel to Batman Begins you are sure to be watching sometime on Friday, July 18.

Batman: The Movie  (1966)

Save for those die-hard Batman junkies, many didn’t realize when watching Adam West’s Batman TV show, and it’s subsequent movie, the show was essentially Batman Lite.

Yeah, the “detective” elements where mildly present and the “Pow” and “Bam” animations, just about all of Robin’s dialogue and the campy jokes were nothing like the Dark Knight Batman creator Bob Kane intended. But hey, watching Adam West’s Batman battle a shark is entertaining, in a ridiculous sort of way.

Batman  (1989)

Michael Keaton donned the cowl for Tim Burton’s lauded film adaption of Batman. But the star of this movie was Batman’s arch nemesis The Joker, masterfully played by Jack Nicholson. Though purists were thrown for a loop by some of the movie’s plot turns (Joker does in Bruce Wayne’s parents, since when?), the film was the start of a profitable franchise for Warner Brothers. And Prince’s Batman soundtrack wasn’t that bad.

Batman Returns  (1992)

Danny Devito as The Penquin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman - not a bad deal. And with critics and parents groups having a hissy fit saying the film was too dark, the movie couldn’t have been that bad. It didn’t blow away 1989’s film, but Keaton’s last turn as Wayne/Bats was a pretty good look.

Batman Forever  (1995)

And this is where it starts to go downhill. Keaton had dipped because he wasn’t feeling Warner Bros. decision to make Batman more “family friendly.” Val Kilmer was decent, but the villains in this turn—Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face, Jim Carrey as The Riddler—stole the show. Not necessarily a bad thing, but let’s not forget the much mentioned travesty of the Bat suit having nipples. Nipples B! One highlight, Method Man’s “The Riddler” on the soundtrack was dope.

Batman & Robin  (1997)

Cali’s current governor as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, Chris O’Donnell back as Robin and Alicia Silverstone joining the fray as Batgirl. Sounds decent on paper… but real rap, this movie was plain garbage. Holy wackness Batman! After this sole turn as Batman, George Clooney would redeem himself with Ocean’s 11 and Thurman in Kill Bill. The rest of the cast, not so much. Oh, and Coolio makes a cameo.

Batman Begins  (2005)

After the nonsense that was Batman & Robin, the series was way past due for an overhaul, and Batman Begins was the “reset” the franchise needed. Christian Bale does his thing as a brooding, soon to be trained assassin and prodigal son of Gotham City Bruce Wayne.

Based on a few of the beloved Batman series of comics including Batman: Year One and Batman: The Long Halloween, the Batman had finally been translated to the film screen in the incarnation its creator Bob Kane intended. The only faux pas is a hella annoying Katie Holmes playing Rachel Dawes—bless you fast forward button.

The Dark Night  (2008)

The sequel to the near perfect Batman Begins is receiving much hype. Early word is it will trump its stellar predecessor. With Bale and Gary Oldman reprising their roles as Wayne/Batman and Commissioner Gordon, respectively and along with Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/”you ought to know already” and the late Heath Ledger as The Joker, see this movie.

I am and have always been a true Batman fans since... forever and im not talking about the movie. But chea from a real hardcore life long Batman fan.. I shall give you the rundown...

Best Batman Actor:

Keaton = 1
Bale = 2 (But might steal number one with The Dark Knight)
Kilmer = 3 (Honorable Mention)
Clooney = Kill me...
Adam West = ... no comment but better then Clooney

Best Batman Movie:

Batman (Keatons Version) = Hands down probably the best, Batman Begins is hot too but it didnt hit me the same way the original one did.

Best Batman Villain:

Jack Nicholson = So far Nicholson is absolutely, unquestionably, by far, the best Batman villain ever BUT... from the previews and reviews I think Heath Legder is about to dethrone the current king.

ummmm Dark_Knight86, I'm simply voicing my opinion and IMO Keaton is the best Batman.  You don't have to disrespect me by calling me a "retard" or a "fool."  Maybe if you take Christian Bale's dick out of your mouth you can treat people with more respect.  This is blog.  State your opinion, don't downgrade mine.  Thank you.

The Batman and Joker is one thing but I'm curious if they'll be able to just as successfully pull off Two Face in future films. Tommy Lee was horrible casting for that role bacc in 95 and they made Two Face more of a schitzo lunatic then the cold,  hard mobster he truly is.

My favorite Batman movie is either Batman begins or the Batman 1989 version with Keaton. It's impossible for me to choose. True, in Batman they got the story wrong, well from the comics, and Keaton is not the best man to play Matman physically, but he was dope. and Nicholson???... Dog, OFF THE METER as Joker. Plus the score was ill as hell. The Batman theme was nasty.

Batman Begins captured the Dark Knight from the comics better, so it was truer in that sense. Plus, Bale is taller and a little more muscular, which is good. Plus I think he's just as good of an actor, actually if not better, than Keaton. The new Batman franchise was off to a bangin start, but then I realized Joker was gonna have to be in the next one. I was like aw man, WHO is gonna play JOKER better than Jack Nicholson??? But I've heard how much heath Ledger put into the role, and I think this Joker is gonna be a little different. From the looks of it, I think Ledger's Joker is gonna be a little more grimey and gutter with it, some lunatic thug, as opposed to the gangster dropped in a vat of chemicals who went a little crazy with a serious makeover.

I can say this: I'm HYPED to see Dark Knight.

I saw The Dark Knight earlier today and this is definitely the best Batman movie of all time... Heath Ledger absolutely blows Jack out of the water in this role, even though they took 2 diff approaches to their roles. Bale is solid as Batman/Wayne once again. I think he kinda over-did it with the deep voice with the bat-suit on though lol... Was his voice that deep in Batman Begins? Who knows... But anyways, I gotta go see this shit again... I see movies for free anyway cuz Im the Boss!!!

I agree that Batman the animated series was raw. Batman Beyond was straight too. I think Batman with Michael Keaton was the best. Number 1 villian was Jack Nicholson when he played the Jokeer. 2nd was Catwoman. One thing about the old Batman movies I didn't like he was weak to the females he let them know who he was.

The 1966 one wasn't that bad.  I liked the "Pow" and "Wham" animations in the film.  Plus, there were a gang of bad guys and all of them were interesting.

Clearly, the Batman movie that is coming out in less than 24 hours is going to be not only the best Batman film ever, but probably the best super hero movie ever with the best villain performance ever (Heath Ledger playing the joker).  This is a must see in I-MAX, on the first day of release type of film.  You need to be there 30 minutes before the film starts because obviously, seats will be filled early, but their are two trailers that everybody has been waiting on.  Terminator 3 (no Arnold, so this is refreshing) and the highly anticipated comic book turned film Watchmen.  Be there or else.

Peace and more hair grease,

I was just having this convo with me auntie the other day, so I've got to get in on this one...

I'ma make my decision of who is the best what (Keaton vs. Bale & Jack vs. Heath). I think that Keaton brought a very dark and deeply withdrawn feel to Batman that is the core of Batmans character. Plus Keaton (the younger one) was regarded as one of hollywoods good looking men. Point is, billionaire playboys get old too and I think thats where Tim Burton was coming from. Bring older more seasoned actors in for his films.

I feel both Keaton Batman movies were the best. I was in the 5th grade when the first movie came out and the promotion around it alone makes it the hands down best. Everyone and they mama had a Batman shirt or hat. Haven't seen that with anyother Batman movie since, including this new one.

Bale is going to equal or be greater than Keaton depending on his performance in this one. I think he's going to take it. One thing people are forgetting is that Bale played in American Psycho. He played a witty playboy broker who was crazy as hell (perfect Wayne/Batman). He is also phsycially fit for role of Batman as seen in AmPsy.

As far as villians are concerned. For me it's Jack's Joker and Danny's Penguin. Nigga's is frontin on Danny for that role. He did his thing and Catwoman was on point too. I think that Tim Burton was the perfect fit for making the Batman movies. Warner Brothers fucked up when they couldn't come to an agreement on the 3rd film with Burton. Plus Billy Dee Williams was suppose to play 2Face (hence the older feel of the cast to tie into what I was saying about Keaton. Think about it everyone that played in the first 2 Batmans were older but fit their roles to the tee.) but was turned down after Burton left. He would have been the best 2Face. Think about how his smooth ass turned ugly in Lady Sing's The Blues. Plus with his Domestic past you know he can smack a bitch. Carey as the Riddler was the only keeper that Warner included from Tim Burton's time with the film. So Tim still gave the Batman Forever it's only properly placed Star and it's best character.

I feel that Heath will put Jack's Joker to rest and cause long debate about who was actually better.

I, My Wife and Kids will be there tommorow.

LMAO @ this statement.  Are you serious!  I liked Michael Keaton as Batman....after him, the rest sucked until Bale took over the role.  Bale is cold as hell, and this latest Batman (especially to those of you who posted this WITHOUT seeing the latest one) is definitely right there with the first one w/Jack and Michael Keaton.

I won't go as far as to say which is better.  I'll just give it a tie....but Heath deserves an Oscar.  Dayum he did his thing w/The Joker. Him and Jack did the damn thing with those roles.

Clooney was worst Batman ever...in fact, I'm STILL PISSED the one with Awnald (w in there on purpose:), Jim, Uma turned out to be so dayum bad...

THis latest one though...instant CLASSIC.

Deep...dark...and makes you truly think.  Mad messages/meanings to this one.  Two Thumbs UP...way Up
