i think he'll fare well...but just do the artists rights. we all know about the market research and the this and the that. i believe if you invest in an artist you will get it back. cats like Ghost, red, meth, the roots are viable artists on a number of levels. lets get back to something called "artist developement" and take a few risks. Here is a risk: get rick ross and foxy to do an album together. whoa!

Why didn’t Reid just give him the President Title, or even Chief Operating Officer? Anyway. Shakir Strewart is a formidable exec who will bring good things to def jam as its new leader. However I think that for years some serious problems at Def Jam is continuously overlooked by upper management. One of these problems is that Def Jam is overflowing with artists. What needs to happen is that Reid & Stewart needs to comb through the current roster and trim it by at least 40%. Most of the artist on Def Jam are artists who have already blown their load and their fan base for the most part have moved on. It is these said artists who complained during the Carter administration about their albums flopping. What these and many artist fail to understand is that, a label can do but so much to try and convince the music public to buy their albums. But at the end of the day, its up to the actual product that will help the music public in deciding if they should buy the album or not. Even sometimes when an artist creates a good product, it falls flat even with the label pushing it hard. Sometimes artist need to face the reality that, there time may have passed.

First and foremost I'd like to say that we in the Bay Area are very proud of Mr. Stewart(who's from Oakland Ca,) and his accomplishments in music and business, but in the same breath I and many others are equally disappointed. Here's why, Shakir was out in the San Francisco to hold auditions for the Def Jam Mega Star Search in which he claimed to be looking for the next Keisha Cole, Toni Tony Tone, En Vogue etc. to come out of the
Bay. Which to me only makes since for the simple fact that he finds bonifide talent in other areas for Arista and now Def Jam and fo one from his own backyard which is so rich with talent. Now what was sad to me is that he sent unproven Jr. A&R's down to seek out talent at the auditions and they made plenty of mistakes with their choosing of artist that made it to the final round of the competition. One of my acts made it and the other(the most talented of the 2 submitted) didnt make it much to the suprise of myself, other competitors that made it, and the organization that marketed the event, until it dawned upon me when I went to the finals to check out who made it and noticed that almost everyone who did had had either a single on the radio (whether it was good or bad) or had their music pressed up which my act Jenelle did. There were also acouple ladies who sang covers to other music that should'nt even had been in the building because they sucked! Shakir who was there for the finals to judge(which I respect ended up choosin a couple of great talents in My girl Netta B. who's very hot, and my boy Drew who's the white Jay Z for real. My problem is a lot of talent was left by the waist side including my guys Fiveten (if you dont believe check out myspace.com/fivetenmusic and judge for yourself) amongst many others. Because of file sharing and i-tunes sales are down in the music industry nation wide and labels are now lazy and want guys to generate there own buzz so they can pay you shit and do very little marketing because you already busted you ass to build a following and a fan base. I don't have a problem with that as long as artist are compensated for their hard work on their indie hustle. Too many time they are not ( ask Shakir about 360 deals) and labels are now trying to make more money off artist too make up for the money they're losing. So heres my advice to upcoming artist trying to sign that big recording contract that'll keep them in debt until there album goes Platinum plus (if not if your lucky enough not to get dropped they'll give u another advance to get you further in debt for your next project) or they make money back by now getting some of your tour money which was before unrecoupable. Bend over and take it like a man or roll up your sleeves and grind independently so when labels do come knockin you can name your price and if they don't accept stay independent, you'll make more $ that way. As for me and my acts, its going to be a hot summer in the Bay baby and the price has gone up for labels. Hit me @ chezshoppa@comcast.net if you feel me!

I just hope that he can help these newer artist out. They probably don't have much experience on the major level so he needs to focus on them to get them where they need to be. This would not only help the new roster but the company as a whole would see a growth.

I'mma hafta agree w/ Morchez Frazier about dude and the A&Rs--I was one of the people who auditioned in San Francisco, and dude literally said (in monotone voice),"Here are the rules..Go." I was hyping for DLabrie, the 1st act of the 1st day. B/C we gave a shout out to the Bay in the song, he said he was looking 4 a more regional sound but no one tells Lil Jon or Ludacris not to shout out Atlanta in their songs. Then he told DLabrie that I was more hyped than him and he wasn't feelin that..isn't that what the hype man/woman for? Chuck D did not have more energy than Flav. All in all, I definitely wasn't feelin the whole environment and auditions in that lil stuffy room w/ 25 expressionless faces staring at u while u runnin all over the stage tryna "tear da club up". Guess u can't always take feedback straight to the face, just take what u can use and discard the rest. Neither myself or DLabrie are "hyphy" artists, we just happened to perform a song w/ energy and in the song, it shouted out the Bay. DLabrie's song "Vote For Barack" played on CNN on that big Tues while the news reported Hip-Hop's endorsement of Obama. Check DLabrie out in the very tops on my myspace, and check me out as well.

Finally Def Jam has someone in the house who will help all the artists and not just a chosen few. Jigga is great, but IDJ put him in a bad spot. They should've given him a zillion dollars as an artist. How was he supposed to oversee his interests and a roster of 80 to 100 others? This brother can concentrate on the roster without the conflict of interest of his own music. Now all the excuses are off the table. The rightfully angry rappers are going to have to step up. No more garbage LL. Please!!!
