That's what made Rap special. Incredible lyricism and going against the grain, breaking new ground and shit.

Nowadays so many niggas done crossed over and went pop that hip-hop is damn near ruined. MC'ing and freestyling is going to be like breakdancing. I was watching Beat Street the other day you had straight real street niggas breaking, banging through dancing and shit, now nothing but squares do that shit. That how MC'ing and freestyling's going to be too. Once real niggas used to do it, then pretty soon its going to be nothing but square ass back-pack niggas freestyling and shit. While the rest of these niggas be on some R&B singing type shit. With all these Rap records floppin' its only a matter of time before majors stop making rap music a priority.

Hip-Hop ain't dead, it just sold its soul and gave our music away to the mainstream and now its dying. Hip-Hop's all about the streets, you take it to a place outside of the streets it ain't gonna last.

But from what I understand it was damn near the same way in '86, until Eric B is President, I Ain't No Joke, and My Melody dropped, and Rakim showed and proved a style that ended a gang of A-B-C rappers careers. Its gonna take a 2008 version of Rakim to save hip-hop. A chosen MC to show and prove what true hip-hop is....

A lot of people give fans of lyricism attitude but you have to understand that the spoken word is more powerful then anything on this earth.Words change times, set off wars, creates families, lead faith, inspire the lost.If beats and dancing in the club is all you want to do then thats fine.Say so and you'll be left alone but dont hide behide age as reason why Soulja boy doesnt have lyrics cuz as Gza pointed out thats a weak cover up.And if you want to deal solely with numbers(album sales)then hey that your business.But when the labels start looking elsewhere its still going to be the words of hip hop leaders that cause things to happen.

Yeah I feel you on that. Niggas like 50 think they're legends and their records are classics because of record sales. But these niggas ain't in tune with the streets. Most of their fans are white suburbian muthafuckas. The streets don't really fuck wit their music.

Like KRS-One said back in the day with that "Original Lyrics" song off the Edutainment CD.

Nigga was out of touch like a muthafucka. The streets stay fuckin wit LiL Wayne for the past 5 years. Nigga had mixtapes classics in the hood. LiL Wayne's a true MC that'll smash 50 on some rap shit....At the end of the day your legacy will be determined by how nice you are on the Mic, not by how many records you sale..Cause if it went by that my nigga MC Hammer will be the best rapper of all time.

I cant believe how long its been since the WU came out. A full lifetime for the new recruits buyn up product or should I say downloading. Its to the point now that you arent respected unless you use ammo or cook crack to make it in life. GZA is a teacher, far from the bully dopeboy skippin class with his rag hangin low. Who do you choose to support trails into who continues to set the stage, same goes for ALL purchases. If you want change than safeguard that money an think where your change goes.

Great interview. Pro Tools, my opinion is the best album this year so far. Don't think anything else could top this. The way he puts words together, and puts them in a rhyme is incredible. I don't know how he comes up with some of his shit. Another thing i love about his work is that you can listen album 6 months from now, and hear something different. Emcees take lessons from this man.

Well said, I couldn't agree more. For me I can tell if an artist is a true lyricist when you hear a verse, feel it and it just gives you chills. Then you got to go back and listen to it again.
I think sometimes lyrics and spoken words can be more powerfull and better at telling a story than a book or movie. You look at someone like Biggie who IMO was one of the best story tellers ever. For example, Ready to Die from beginning to end I could feel and picture.

I love the fact that the question of these MC's so called say they do not write ryhmes. Even though Lil Wayne claims he does not write his, and yeah he sold some records to me he still has no classic material, jay-z is another one his only real classic CD is Reasonble Doubt it is the only CD I can play all the way through without skipping songs. They say that Biggie did it and if true than he has one hell of and imagination and memory and both of albums are classics.

Gza n the whole Wu-Tang defined a whole generation of Hip-Hop...they were holding the East up on their backs for a minute...they are real hip-hop...real lyricism. Hip-Hop is about having a voice..it was created as a vehicle for urban youth/people to get their voices heard by people who wouldn't other wise hear them...its about creating awareness about whats going on...its about a message....all this is something that is sadly and drastically lacking in todays music. Hip-Hop in its purest form is dead...its been reincarnated to the crap thats on the radio today....With an exception to rappers still around from teh 90's (Jay, nas, mobb deep, Common, eminem etc..) and some new commers (Lupe, Game and Kanye) dudes is wak...they have no lyrical skills. Hip-Hop was about creativity...there is nothing creative about what 50 Cent raps about...nothing at all...he sells records but like my man said before, If records sales really gauged a mans talent, then MC Hammer would be the best rapper ever. LiL Wayne he aint got no message to his music or even real substance...but atleast he got real creativity...he got real word play...50 dont got none of that...he should have kept his word and done us all a favor and retired when my man Kanye beat him in record sales.

It kills me to see what rap has become...remember the lyrics of Tupac in changes, brenda got a baby, etc...that was real hip-hop...remember Biggie...remember the word play of my man (and fellow boriqua) the late great Big Punisher...dead in the middle of little italy, little did we know that we riddled to middle man who didnt do diddley....that is real hip-hop...i remember the lunch line rappers...duded battling in teh cafateria, on teh ball court...Hip-Hop was live...now its all about hoppin on a party beat and gettin some corny and catchy hook.

GZA is that dude.....He touched on what needed to be touched in the interview. Everyone always mentions the big guys doing they thing but nobody thinks about the little cats...Ehzli, Blu, Little Brother, Termanology, Torae, Skyzoo.....The list goes on and on. Yeah Kanye and Game and Lil Wayne doing they thing but they already where they need to be. We need to help the starving artists that do this everyday.....The cats that live this shit. I used to buy into this "hip hop is dead" idea until someone pointed out to me that without soulja boy, we couldn't appreciate nas. And like wise vice versa if that's your taste.

The reason why rap has survived is that it's a diverse and versitale music form. IT'S BIG ENOUGH FOR EVERYBODY. If everybody sounded like GZA, Nas, Budden, Pap we'd be bored with it. The artform would have died because everybody would have sounded the same.

But since we have Jeezey, we have E40s , we have Waynes, we have variety, the differences between artist stand out and make them that much more appealing and unique.

Rap is big enough for everybody, hip hop is not dying anytime soon.

The problem is that many of these rappers these days would rather make a song about being drunk in the club with their heads clouded with liquor and weed, grinding on some hoodrat. They rather make money bragging about selling poison to their own people for a new maybach or a transformer chain. They would make songs for children and like The Genius said, would use their ABC rhymes to breainwash them into a life of crime like certain rappers *coughjeezycough*.

Good thing is that these rappers are selling less and their tour money aint long as it use to be. Im also glad that the record companies are dropping these rappers and making them broke because those people with that ignorant mentality need to STFU.

Fact of the matter is I'd rather see souljah boy doing his thing on an international tip gettin' real dough and relevant business knowledge as opposed to working at mcdonald's during the summer.

ok ill say this much GZA is the truth. What can niggaz do with a car that they will probably never see in REAL life? Niggaz fall in love with fantasy but hate reality!
