I agree with the article 100%. What I found to be truly amazing is how the republicans call Barak Obama a superstar and compared to the likes of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, yet John McCain’s wife sported a 313,000 outfit on Wednesday only to the convention. Yes I said it 313,000 outfit. How in the hell can you relate to the plight of hard working Americans who must make a choice between keeping the lights on or skipping a month on the car note. Also how that is you can work for a billion dollar corporation like Wal-Mart and not receive health benefits but yet the government taxes your check for Medicare and you don’t receive benefits. How can billion dollar corporations pay slave wages of 8 to 9 $ an hour when the median price of a home in California alone is at 400,000 dollars. How is that I have a college degree and make 40,000 a year and have two children but on my W2 form I have to claim 4 dependents just to have less taxes taken out WOW!! So that means each year I end up owing the government money. I am ready for a change and I welcome it with open arms. In my opinion black people are the least racist people on the plant we give everyone a chance and we only respond when provoked. How can we be racist towards anyone when we have suffered the most? Are we angry? Hell yeah. Once we have resources in our community and less guns and drugs we well be much better off. So to the republicans who sport 300,000 outfits and can’t keep track of how many homes they own, cheers to you!!!!!

What I didn't like about the rnc is that they said nothing about the economy. Actually Obama said he will raise taxes on people making over 250k. (I'm assuming married couples) Some one has to pay the price. Most of these Big corporations (particullarly C corps) has huge tax loop holes. Matter of fact, What has John McCain done? On his official website bio, McCain lists that he demanded Washington to put an end to corporate loopholes and tried to reduce government spending. The last time I checked, both of those still occur so two L’s for John. The rest and the overwhelming majority of his bio talks about him being shot down lol. No disrespect to any of our troops and veterans but being a POW means you did something wrong, you got caught….mission FAILed. 0-3 for McCain.

The problem is that our government is guilty of ignoring it’s own citizens while it funds the “salvation” of others. When America was committing human rights violations,(slavery, jim crow, unequal education, denying voting rights,) did any other country invade America and provide the funding to fight for their freedom? So why does America fund 90%…that’s NINETY PERCENT of the current war? That's called hypocrisy, especially when there are more pressing needs (Darfur, China and poverty in America etc. )

The Iraq government and banks are making RECORD PROFITS while the American DEBT is growing. Anybody in any party, or of any race and gender SHOULD be able to see how FUCKED UP AND STUPID that is. Unfortunately a certain party wants to continue the waste....Fuck outta here Republicans.

I actually like McCain, from what I've seen and heard (not a lot admittedly). I believe Obama when he says, "It's not that McCain doesn't care; he just doesn't get it." I can't stand a lot of people he's surrounded by. Most of those Republicans, especially Rudy "Jackass" Giuliani, just don't show that they're good people. Palin even took some cheap shots at Obama, but Giuliani was the WORST. He spit on Obama. That's not politics, that's not being respectable and mature and professional. @ lexxdirt - i feel ya' on the big government aspect of what you're saying as many of the promises Obama has put forth fall on the side of socialism, but he is still the best choice in my opinion...

That said, the little part of McCain's speech I watched (i just couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing, it hurt!) he was semi-cordial to Obama, but that was because he let his goon-squad get at Barack; Guiliani, Palin and the rest of the click.

IMO, I don't think the healthcare plan will work unless the government creates a hospital system similar to what we have for veterans and we make immigrants pay just like the citizens; otherwise the plan will fail for lack of funding and efficient operation. And for people in the Midwest (Detroit, Ohio etc) will continue to have few job opportunities and hard times as the primary industries in those regions were blue collar industrial jobs that were union jobs (especially the auto industry) and at the end of the day we (America) can't compete with foreign countries who have cheap labor and foreign automakers (Toyota & Honda) who are non-union.

But I think Obama will do great with our foreign relations as he is extremely popular in the Middle East and abroad, he will change the culture of politics in Washington and I think he will honestly do all that he can to help stimulate the economy.
One last thing, we really shouldn't be surprised to see them folks' come at Obama like this because they really don't have anything on him besides the fact he is not in the good ole' boy network in Washington and hasn't been there for the last 30 years like McCain.

And not that anyone asked, but Biden is a bomb choice for VP as he chairs the Foreign Relations Comm. and he is on-point with what needs to happen with getting us out of this crazy war.... Keep the convo relevant like this and we may be able to wake up the hip hop masses... GREAT ARTICLE, homes!

I honestly saw some of the most disrespectful comments to come out of the mouths of some of the most "respected" individuals about Obama and people cheered like they were telling some type of truth.

The vile, hurtful, and complete slap in the face to Black America by Sarah Palin was digusting and hurtful.

The Community Organizer line was a good attack to deflect attention away from her lack of experience its not their job to admit to the weakness they posses its Obamas/biden job so if she can skip Obama being in the senate passing legislating and being an elected official for 12 years thats Obama fault not hers its her job to state her argument!

The republicans are not running any different campaign from 04 and 2000, everything they doing is what they did before nothing new attack John kerry Patriotism even though he faught in Vietnam, say he was for it before he was against it, call him a flip flopper, and then make him out to be an elitist! Whats the difference from 04-08?

I'm pretty much in the boat with those who say it doesn't boil down to race and race alone. Still, if there's any racist rhetoric coming from the GOP (at least with regard to blacks), it's because they know that generally, they can get away with it. Why should they try to placate us when our votes--when they count--are pretty much unwavoringly democratic; what do they have lose? Meanwhile, Democrats can feed us shit and sweep us under the rug when they feel it necessary, because at the end of the day, our vote is secure.

The end of stuff like Jim Crow and overt racial oppression was achieved largely because the US stood to lose a lot internationally if those systems continued. Right now, the black vote is expendable, and as long as politicians feel they have nothing to lose with regard to us, our concerns will be largely ignored.

Although I respect everyones opinion at the end of the day I feel like our opinions really don't matter. Our GOVERNMENT is so CORRUPT and DECEITFUL that it doesn't even matter if OBAMA has 2 MILLION more VOTES than McCain, as much as I HATE to say it McCain will still become the next President of The USA. Think about it, HOW IN THE HELL DID BUSH GET RE ELECTED?? HOW DID HE GET ELECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE?? THE GOV'T DETERMINES WHO WILL BE OUR PRESIDENT NOT THE CITIZENS OF OUR COUNTRY!! As far as the DNC and the RNC there was clearly a BIG DIFFERENCE. The DNC addressed issues(economy, war, health care, education,etc.), not only that but there were supporters from many RACES. It was a sense of UNITY and NOT DIVISION as if everyone was on the same page REGARDLESS of RACE,SEX or RELIGION. When I heard OBAMA deliver his message it gave me GOOSE BUMPS!! OBAMA represents UNITY and ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE!!!

As far as the RNC it was a complete SNOOZEFEST, VERY BORING and a BUNCH OF BS!! McCain spoke mostly about being a veteran,a POW and OBAMA. It seems as if he was MORE CONCERNED WITH HIS PAST WAR EXPERIENCE and THROWING DIRT ON OBAMAS NAME THAN ADDRESSING THE ISSUES WE HAVE IN OUR COUNTRY. Just by watching the RNC WE CAN CLEARLY SEE WHO SUPPORTS HIM AND WHO HE SUPPORTS!! There was a TREMENDOUS LACK OF DIVERSITY at THE RNC and did anyone NOTICE how the cameramen MADE SURE THEY GOT FOOTAGE OF THE 10 BLACK SUPPORTERS THAT WERE PRESENT AMONG 70,000 SUPPORTERS.

Did a Mississippi Raid Protect Rightwing Politicians?

Laurel, Mississippi - On August 25, immigration agents swooped down on Howard Industries, a Mississippi electrical equipment factory, taking 481 workers to a privately-run detention center in Jena, Louisiana. A hundred and six women were also arrested at the plant, and released wearing electronic monitoring devices on their ankles if they had children, or without them if they were pregnant. Eight workers were taken to Federal court in Hattiesburg, where they were charged with aggravated identity theft.

Afterwards Barbara Gonzalez, spokesperson for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stated the raid took place because of a tip by a “union member” two years before. Other media accounts focused on an incident in which plant workers allegedly cheered as their coworkers were led away by ICE agents. The articles claim the plant was torn by tension between immigrant and non-immigrant workers, and that unions in Mississippi are hostile to immigrants.

Many Mississippi activists and workers, however, charge the raid had a political agenda - undermining a growing political coalition that threatens the state’s conservative Republican establishment. They also say the raid, which took place during union contract negotiations, will help the company resist demands for better wages and conditions.

Jim Evans, a national AFL-CIO staff member in Mississippi and a leading member of the state legislature’s Black Caucus, said he believed “this raid is an effort to drive immigrants out of Mississippi. It is also an attempt to drive a wedge between immigrants, African Americans, white people and unions - all those who want political change here.” Patricia Ice, attorney for the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA), agreed that “this is political. They want a mass exodus of immigrants out of the state, the kind we’ve seen in Arizona and Oklahoma. The political establishment here is threatened by Mississippi’s changing demographics, and what the electorate might look like in 20 years.”

In the last two decades, the percentage of African Americans in the state’s population has increased to over 35%, and immigrants, who were statistically insignificant until recently, are expected to reach 10% in the next decade. Mississippi union membership has been among the nation’s lowest, but since the early 1980s, workers have joined unions in catfish and poultry plants, casinos and shipyards, along with those at Howard Industries.

Evans, other members of the Black Caucus, many of the state’s labor organizations, and immigrant communities all see shifting demographics as the basis for changing the state’s politics. Over the last seven years their growing coalition has proposed legislation to set up a Department of Labor (Mississippi is the only state without one), guarantee access to education for children of all races and nationalities, and provide drivers’ licenses to immigrants. MIRA organized support in the state capitol for those proposals, and Evans, who sponsored many of them, chairs MIRA’s board.

Earlier this year, however, the legislature passed, and Governor Haley Barbour signed, a law making it a state felony for an undocumented worker to hold a job, punishable by 1-5 years in prison and $1,000-10,000 in fines. Employers are given immunity for employing workers without papers, so long as they vet new hires through an ICE database called E-Verify. It is still not known whether the people arrested at Howard Industries will be charged under the new state law. Evans says the law and the raid serve the same objectives. “They both just make it easier to exploit workers. The people who profit from Mississippi’s low wage system want to keep it the way it is,” he alleged.

Howard Industries, like most Mississippi employers, has a long record of opposing unions. Workers there chose representation by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on June 8, 2000, by a vote of 162-108. Employment at the plant, which manufactures electrical ballasts and transformers, grew considerably after the election, and the company now employs over 4000 workers at several locations in Mississippi. In 2002 it received a $31.5 million subsidy for expansion from the state government, and at one point state legislators were all given HI laptop computers. “The company is very well-connected politically,” says Evans, who noted that its owners donated to the campaigns of former Democratic governor Ronnie Musgrove, and then to Mississippi’s current Republican governor Haley Barbour.

As it grew, the company hired many immigrant Mexican and Central American workers, diversifying a workforce that was originally primarily African American and white. The company has declined to comment, and released a press statement that said, “Howard Industries runs every check allowed to ascertain the immigration status of all applicants for jobs. It is company policy that it hires only U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.”

During the organizing drive, the union filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging intimidation and violations of workers’ rights. After the union and company agreed on a contract, more charges followed. NLRB Region 15 issued a complaint against the company for violating the union’s bargaining rights. Roger Doolittle, attorney for IBEW Local 1317, says other charges allege that the company threatened a union steward for trying to represent workers in the plant. In June, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced it intended to fine the company $123,000 for 36 violations of health and safety regulations at the Pendorf plant, where the raid took place, and another $41,000 in fines for a second Laurel location.

Tension between the company and union increased after the collective bargaining agreement expired at the beginning of August. According to one immigrant worker, who was not detained because he worked on swing shift and did not want to be identified, the union was asking for a wage increase of $1.50/hour and better vacation benefits. Company medical benefits are also an issue among workers, he said, because family coverage costs over $100/week, putting it out of reach for most employees.

Mississippi is a right-to-work state, and labor contracts cannot require that workers belong to the union. Instead, unions must continually try to sign workers up as members. In past years, according to other union sources, IBEW Local 1317 had a reputation as a union that did not offer much support to its immigrant members.

To increase its ability to negotiate a contract, Local 1317 began making greater efforts to sign up immigrant members. Spanish-speaking organizers were brought in, and they handed out leaflets in Spanish explaining the benefits of membership. They visited workers at home so they could talk about the union without being overheard or seen by company supervisors. According to the swing shift worker, many began to join, especially the immigrants who’d been hired most recently. IBEW’s national newspaper, Electrical Worker, reported that over 200 had signed up last April, according to Local 1317’s African-American business manager Clarence Larkin. “It’s a constant process to keep the union alive and growing,” he told the paper.

That’s when the plant was raided. Local 1317 will now have to try to negotiate a contract after the loss of many of its members, who were among those detained.

Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, explained that “raids drive down wages because they intimidate workers, even citizens and legal residents. The employer brings in another batch of employees and continues business as usual, while people who protest get targeted and workers get deported. Raids really demonstrate the employer’s power.” The Hattiesburg American reported Friday that Howard Industries sent a letter to customers two days after the raid, assuring them that production would be back to normal by the end of the week, and noting that the company has not been charged.

Spokesperson Barbara Gonzalez claimed ICE waited two years after receiving a call from a “union member” before conducting the raid, because “we took the time needed for our investigation.” She declined to say how that investigation was conducted, or what led ICE to believe their tip had come from a union member. The picture of a plant in which union members were hostile to immigrants was reinforced after the raid by media accounts of an incident in which workers “applauded” as their coworkers were taken away. But on August 29, when Cintra and the braceleted women sat in front of the plant for a second day, demanding more paychecks, African American workers came up to them as they left work, embraced the women, and told them they supported them.

John McCain has done scores and scores of work in AZ. He created and proposed over 40 different bills in the senate including the McCain-Feingold act. Comparatively Senator Obama has proposed/co-authored only 5 bills and has an absentee record that is only slightly better than Howard Dean, missing or refusing to vote on over 70% of all Senate measures. Comparatively McCain has refused to vote on less than 10% of all measures in the senate. He has one of the lowest absentee records and also one of the best attendance records in the entire senate, even in an election year.

These are your tax dollars at work. Do you care how good someone looks or what color they are if they don't have substance?

Even if Obama gets elected, or McCain gets elected... we're looking at more of the same...

The Democratic party lies to you and claims to be less biased than the Republican party... when the reality is... they're both based around money, like everything in this world. They want your tax dollars. They could care less what color you are. But it happens to be that the white people have the money. And so it becomes a battle that is class based, not race based, and people vs. government, not people vs. people.

The government is what is holding us down and until we get a government composed entirely of middle class citizens, we are doing ourselves an injustice.

Obama is not a black man, or a white man, he's a politician.
McCain is not a white man, or a hispanic man, he's a politician.
Palin is not a woman, she is a politician.

Becoming a politician immediately nulls any value you have to society. They are all the enemy of the people. Believing that one organization is inherently racist when the two organizations have the same basic purpose and premise is short-sighted.

A time is coming when we will rise up and form a people's party, a party that will not revolve around money but rather the will of the people themselves.

Votes do count, the problem is the way the vote is counted. If I vote for Obama (in New York), it does not matter, I feel, because New York almost always goes to the Democrats. But in Virginia, a Democratic vote is more important because it is historically Republican. Texas is a Republican strong hold, so if you from Houston and you vote for Obama and he doesn't win; not enough votes broke the Republican hold. If you live in a battle ground state or a historically Republican state (you can check MSNBC/CNN/FOX/ABC for the breakdown) I suggest get busy with helping everyone you know get registered and when the time comes getting out and voting.

Conspiracy theories are dangerous because it kills hope. When people say "The government is too corrupt" so it doesn't matter what we (the people) want; why would anybody try and get involved in government?

We are the government (believe it or not). This is one of the reasons I think Obama's election is important for the country. Looking at his rise from middle America, the sacrifices he had to make along the way and then to see him get to a point as high as President is inspiring (don't use this to think that is the only reason I support him, and accuse me of blindly following a politician who has done nothing and so on). Also, Michelle Obama is amazing. She is a strong, independent minded, brilliant woman who America respect.

Conspiracy theories are debilitating because they excuse inaction. As a citizen of these United States you should vote, and if you dont see anyone out there worth voting for, then as a wise man once said, "Become the change in the world you wish to see".

If you are black, your were not a Democrat before segregation[much like the republican party looks now]. If you tried to join the democratic party then, you were lynched and much worse. Five of the 10 cities with the highest poverty rates (Detroit, Buffalo, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Newark) have had a Democratic stranglehold since at least 1961: more than 45 years. Two of the cities (Milwaukee and Newark) have been electing Democrats since the first Model T rolled off the assembly line in 1908.

Two cities, 100 years, all Democrats.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, the asylums in those cities must be as full as the soup kitchens.

Not too long ago, I had the great honor of being invited to a charity dinner hosted by Chris Gardner. He's the guy whose rags-to-riches life was portrayed by Will Smith in the movie "Pursuit of Happyness." Chris had been on my show a few times, and I've always admired his story and his message of hope through personal responsibility.

As I prepared for the dinner and looked into Chris' charity, I started to get nervous. The roster was filled with liberals, most of whom would probably hate me. Hillary Clinton, Mario Cuomo, Alan Alda, Kenneth Cole and Charles Grodin were just a few of the people I was worried about running into.

But the question I kept asking myself was, why? Why can't people from wildly different political stripes come together in support of a common cause without feeling alienated? Why is an issue like poverty "owned" by one political party?

I consider myself a conservative, but I consider myself an American and a human being first. When people whom I normally agree with screw things up, I call them on it. Yet the people in these cities apparently don't. Newark keeps drinking the Kool-Aid, electing the same people with the same ideas, slipping down the poverty list (along with the "Places Never to Visit Unless it's the Airport" list) and wondering why.

We've talked a lot about "change" in this country recently, but there's a much more important catchphrase that we've neglected: "All politics is local." Maybe instead of focusing so much on who we put in charge of our country, we should focus more on who we put in charge of our cities.

Oh, and before I forget. The hateful politician who suggested that we should be "driving" or "leading" the poor out of poverty? It was Benjamin Franklin.

Although I've been a victim of direct and indirect racisim, I had to move from my original home town to another city/ state, to another city/ state that is racially diverse. Get some white friends under my belt to say this.

I'll cautiously say that, what we call racisim in some cases is correct. But alot of cases, more than not, we are being treated the same way whites treat other whites. I mean, in my opinion, most whites treat and look at everybody equally fucked up. Blacks on a whole, are a community loving, group gatherthing type of people. We take easy offense to different types of treatment cause it is not how we would treat each other. Whites on a whole are opinionated and flat of fearfull of each other. If there aint any blacks living in a particular neighborhood, then they accuse the people of bringing down the neighborhood as the renters up the street, or the young couple with alot of kids, or the family with a lot of dogs and cars in the yard. In my "opinion" whites are fearfull and opinionated about anybody and everybody. With them it will always be some "group" causing problems to their perfect little existance.

They accuse blacks of being a violent race, and in alot of cases they are correct. We are a emotional race and we have a predisposition to react off of those emotions, first, then think second. Whites are so fearfull, they will think first then react, but their reaction will be to "erradicate the problem" instead of just kicking someones ass.

The GOP just happens to be a political party with a heavy concentration of whites who have either shielded themselves or grew up in conditions that shielded them from "common people", white, black or brown. Their decision making tends to continue to protect the "class" which they grew up in from the outside "dangers". Again its their fear reaction, think first erradicate next. History has told this tale, time and time again.

I hope and believe that Obama winning this presidency would bring a togetherness in a American social structure that is so broken up. Whites arent that much different than us in alot of ways and by me living in a very, very racially diverse city I have found that Obama has ALOT (I mean alot) of white supporters. There are whites that really, reallly wish they could leave the mistakes of their ancestors in the past and build a future of cooperation with blacks.

And I know its hard to forget the pains, my great grandparents were share croppers who were sons and daughters of slaves. I was told stories when I was really young (1979-1985) by family members in their 90s who directly experienced racisim at its worst. I've seen the scars, I've felt the anger of asking "how could they do this to my family" I have that pain, but I will shed it to help build a new future where my kids will only know friendship with other races.

I personally cannot give any more of my own energy to hate towards another person over something that was done so long ago. We have become so distracted towards pointing out every form of racisim we have been blindsided by the lack of advancement of our own people. We are always saying that we didnt get something because of racisim, then failing to try any harder to get around it because of that same claim. Then pointing the finger at whites for the lack of improvement in our own family structures. Do you think our grandparents and great grandparents would have gotten as far as they did by putting the blame on whites, then, refusing to try harder? I personally know that my family did not take no for an answer and that thought process climbed the generations, unitl it got to me in my early teens. I blamed the world and every white person in it for my "lack of this and my lack of that" It wasnt until I realized that this wasnt getting me no where that I changed my thoughts. This is not a an easy task (changing a thought process) and I had to work very, very hard at it. Everybody does not have that ablity for change. I will put up the effort to help any others to change for positive reasons. This negative thought process has been like a cancer in the black community for my generation, the one before it and it is currently infecting the current generation.

We CAN NOT spread this "infection" to our own children if we intend to live in a better society. If Obama wins, then we, as black people, need to WORK HARD towards fixing the problems with in our own social structures.

Forget about waiting on someone else to change first, we gotta do something now. And this will not make us weak as a race of people, it will actually make us even stroger and tougher than we are now. Let the other races try to undermine us, They would never be able to crack though the basis of our stength. Right now, today, at this moment, we are weak and easily (very easily) divided. Its time to man up, and take responsibilty in OUR hands.

We owe it to Obama for what he is achieving. Do you know, black men like Obama, as kids in school, are usually ridiculed by other blacks for not being black enough. Just because he wants to try harder and be some body. He is usually not invited to all of the popular kids activities cause he is considered a nerd or not "real". You know how I know???? Cause I was one of many who ridiculed others like him when I was younger.

We are intelligent people, intelligent enough to point out how whites have systematically preprogramed us, and we are intelligent enough to stop blaming them and repair the years of misinformation that was done by whites and other blacks.

Obama just paid off student loans less then 4 years ago. He could have gone to work on Wallstreet after graducating at the top of his Harvard class [and he would've been one of my stepdad's family's firm group, lawyer, for sure], but he passed on it.

To go back and help the less fortunate. McCain married well and don't even know how well! He can't remember.

I would rather have someone leading me who put PEOPLE above his own POCKETS.

And guess which one of the surviving presidential candidates likes pork the most? And the least?

She inserted a whopping 281 individual spending projects into bills for the benefit of New York interests at the cost of taxpayers everywhere.

He may also bring it up if his opponent is Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who may be a freshman senator but still isn't shy about inserting special earmarks into legislation cataloged by the taxpayer group's annual report. He accounted for 53 special earmarks, totaling almost $97.4 million.

I don't see a continued military action without a drastic increase in the military, which hasn't been easy so far.

I admit, I don't know too much about politics, I'm still learning, but this election will be historical not just for me, but for the nation, that's why I'm trying to understand both sides policies. Now I'm only 21 and this will be my first time voting for prez, I wish back in 04 I was 18 just so I can punch my ballot for Kerry to get Bush out of office, eventhough I didn't really vibe to well with Kerry. But I digress. I'm telling right now that I'm voting for Obama not because he's black, but because he has a strategy. Not to say that McCain doesn't but during Obama's speech @ the DNC, I felt like he was talking to me because I work two jobs just to help pay my tuition because financial aid says that my folks still make too much even though their divorced, bullshit. But Obama said he would help make it possible that every one has an oppurtunity to get a higher education. Obama also stated a lot of other things as well that I would like to see happen. Now for McCain, I myself didn't hear a plan at all. All I heard was constant bashing of Obama, not necessarily from him, but from other Repubs that represent his vote. I find it odd that McCain didn't even have a plan if he was prez. I say I find it odd because it sounds like they Repubs got something brewing to pull some bullshit during the election, I don't know, I could be wrong, but I could be right. Like Wolf said, Obama showed respect and was humble when he acknowledged McCain for his service but yet his running mate and every Repub took vicious jab at the man. They ride on Obama for not having experience. Well everybody knows about McCain VP so I'm not even going to reiterate, but they also ride on Obama for being all talk and no show. Now how could Obama prove anybody wrong or right when he has no position of power? same for McCain, but he failed us because he voted 90% of the time when Bush dumb ass did some shit that fucked up America. I admit, I was skeptical about Obama in the beginning, but he got me with three words..."Eight is Enough!" I refuse to habe four more years of being fed bullshit from our government that doesn't even care about not just blacks, but every minority. To everybody who thinks their vote doesn't count, that counts more than ever now. HELLRAISER said it best, the Electoral College determines who wins prez, so if you don't vote and the candidate that you don't want to be in office gets in office, don't be crying like a bitch, oppurtunity knocked and you was either sleep, beating off (no homo) or playing Madden. Not every person of color voting for Obama is doing so because he is a person of color. That is an ignorant and irresponsible statement to make.

The current economic plan includes tax cuts for "Big Business", and unemployment is at an all time high. Do you suggest we "make permanent" these tax cuts? So you're afraid Big Business will come and get you?

I believe the Obama tax cuts will give an opportunity to the majority. An opportunity we can use to better ourselves. Connected to increased emphasis on early childhood education, and accessibility to higher education and so on.

I also beleive we are in the trouble we are due to the complacent attitude of your average Americans. Lack of emphasis on family and tomorrow. Living for the moment has its draw backs... The Future.

Obama represents a change. Dramatic? No, but enough to help guide us on the right path.

The fact the presidential campaign is less about substance is not McCain or Obama's fault. This does not, however, mean they are without substance.

The average American (my definition of that would be ask 10 people from different walks of life a question, then average the answer)is not interested in politics. Not understanding or not liking the way politicians operate is never a sufficient excuse to ignore the policies of our government.

I will concede that there are a number of people that will vote for Obama only because he is a minority (black to me, but that is another discussion) but that number is matched, if not surpassed but those who will vote against him for that very same reason.

Oh, I think this discussion will be more productive if we stop attacking peoples intelligence levels and so on. Really just a waste of space.

In May, Hillary Clinton described many of her core supporters as "hard-working Americans, white Americans." Primary voting in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia confirmed her surmise. Her remark seemed, without saying so, to claim an advantage over Obama that was due to his race. But there's more we need to know. We can see how being a farmer or a bond trader or a gun collector might influence your vote. And we understand why black Americans would want a person of their race in the Oval Office. But just what is there about being white that might incline someone toward one candidate instead of another?

Senator Clinton implied that this identity was salient for some voters and that she could appeal to it. Polls showed that some 15 to 20 percent of white voters in those three states said that "race" was a factor in their vote, and we are left to wonder just how much of a factor and how many more would have said the same if they had been frank with the interviewer. People are uneasy talking about the subject of race, but the feeling persists that Obama's half-ancestry could tip the scales on November 4.

Barack Obama can only become president by mustering a turnout that will surpass the votes he is not going to get. This may well mean that more black Americans than ever will have to go to the polls, if only because the electorate is predominantly white, and it isn't clear how their votes will go. Obstacles to getting blacks to vote have always been formidable, but this year there will be barriers—some new, some long-standing—that previous campaigns have not had to face.
New York Review Books Classics

For many years, the momentum was toward making the franchise universal. Property qualifications were ended; the poll tax was nullified; the voting age was lowered to eighteen. But now strong forces are at work to downsize the electorate, ostensibly to combat fraud and strip the rolls of voters who are ineligible for one reason or another. But the real effect is to make it harder for many black Americans to vote, largely because they are more vulnerable to challenges than other parts of the population.

Licensed to Vote

In a 6–3 decision in April written by John Paul Stevens, Crawford v. Marion County Election Board , the Supreme Court upheld a 2005 Indiana law requiring voters in that state to produce a government document with a photograph at the polls. In practical terms, this meant a passport or a driver's license. Since less than a third of adults have a passport, the Indiana case focused largely on how many adults lack a license to drive. During oral arguments, several justices pressed the plaintiff's lawyer for an answer. For reasons I cannot fathom, he kept using the number 43,000, for a state whose voting-age population is 4.6 million. In fact, the Federal Highway Administration, in an easily obtained report, says that 673,926 adult residents of Indiana have no license, which works out to a not trivial 14.7 percent of the state's potential electorate. Had that percentage been stressed, we can conjecture that Justices Stevens and Anthony Kennedy might have shifted their position.

Requiring a driver's license to vote has a disparate racial impact, a finding that once commanded judicial notice. To apply for the state ID card that Indiana offers as an alternative, moreover, nondrivers must travel to a motor vehicles office, which for many would be a lengthy trip. While licenses do not record race, Justice David Souter cited relevant studies of the race of license-holders in his dissent, which was joined by Justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In one survey, made by the Department of Justice in 1994, black residents of Louisiana were found to be four to five times more likely not to have the official photograph needed for an identifying document. (Not to mention access to a car; recall how many couldn't leave as Katrina approached.) A Wisconsin survey published in 2005 was more precise. No fewer than 53 percent of black adults in Milwaukee County were not licensed to drive, compared with 15 percent of white adults in the remainder of the state. According to its author, similar disparities will be found across the nation. [1]

The Indiana decision will not only make it harder to add new people to the rolls; many who had previously voted without photo identification are now required to produce an official photograph. If Marion County (Indianapolis) has the same proportion of unlicensed voters as Milwaukee County, I count it as having more than 44,000 black residents who will be needing transport to motor bureaus to ensure that each item in their nondriver ID application has been properly filled in. Extended nationwide, this means that a lot of on-the-ground assistance is going to be needed.

Purging the Rolls

In 2002, Congress passed the amiably titled Help America Vote Act, presumably to thwart the recurrence of butterfly ballots and dimpled chads. To ensure that voters won't face problems at their polling place, each state is required to maintain an electronic "statewide voter registration list," to be linked to every precinct. States were also mandated to keep their lists current, eliminating the people who die or move away. One method is to mail letters to everyone on the rolls and expunge the names on those letters returned because the addressee could not be found. But black families tend to move more, especially in cities, and few think to notify election officials. When Ohio purged 35,427 returned names in 2004, a review found that the addresses were in "mostly urban and minority areas." [2] Here too, getting back on the rolls can be like mending a mistaken credit rating.

Florida doesn't depend on mailings. Rather, it uses computers to match registrants' names against their Social Security numbers, which are then sent to Washington (actually Baltimore) to see if they match. Whoever devised this system should have known that the Social Security Administration is unable to match submitted names with numbers in 28 percent of the cases sent to it: for example, because they are maiden names of women who married or changed them back after a divorce. [3] Not to mention keyboard operators getting a single digit wrong. Florida also uses the help-the-voter act to check felony records, since convicted criminals there can't vote. Oddly, it only requires that 80 percent of the letters in your name match with the name of someone with such a record. So if there's a murderous John Peterson, the software disenfranchises everyone named John Peters. In view of the racial rates for incarceration, black voters are more apt to have names closely resembling those with felony histories.

Florida's system for purging the voting lists was approved by a 2–1 ruling in federal circuit court this spring, Flor-ida State Conference of the NAACP v. Browning . The dissenting judge, Rosemary Barkett, a Clinton appointee, was the only one to spell out the disparate racial impact. She noted that while black voters made up 13 percent of the scanned pool, they comprised 26 percent of those who were purged; while whites were 66 percent of the pool, they were only 17 percent of the rejected group. Again, if you have plenty of time, you can claim that the computer was mistaken and try to find documents that show you exist and were never a felon.

Voteless for Life

Proportional to the population, the United States leads the world in putting people behind bars, and currently has 2.3 million in its jails and prisons. Among inmates, black men and women outnumber Hispanics by more than two to one and whites by nearly six to one. This is another reason why a much higher ratio of black citizens will be unable to vote this year, because they are among either the 882,300 who are currently incarcerated or the two million who have served sentences but continue to be disenfranchised. According to Restoring the Right to Vote , a report by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School, 13 percent of black men cannot cast votes; in three states 20 percent cannot because they are locked up or formerly were.

Some states specify felonies that condemn the citizen to disenfranchisement for life. Alabama includes soliciting a child by computer, possession of obscene matter, and treason. Yes, some crimes are heinous; but completing a sentence is supposed to signify that a debt has been paid. Indeed, a desire to vote can be seen as showing a willingness to accept a citizen's obligations. Virginia takes an especially harsh view of drug offenses, which is mainly why so many black Americans are imprisoned there, not least because it's so easy to make such arrests. Released offenders must wait seven years before they can file a petition for their vote, which must be accompanied by seven documents and several supporting letters, plus another to the governor detailing "how your life has changed" and specifying "why you feel your rights should be restored."

Mississippi has a similar regimen: with 155,127 men and women released between 1992 and 2004, only 107 petitions to have the right to vote restored were approved. The disenfranchisement of former felons in Kentucky has reduced its potential black electorate by 24 percent. [4]

According to the Brennan Center report, only Maine and Vermont allow inmates to vote (as they can in Israel and Canada). Thirteen states, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, allow former convicts to vote upon their release from prison, while twenty-five bar voting until such ex-prisoners have completed their probation or parole. The other ten, like Alabama and Virginia, make the process of reattaining the right to vote so arduous that most people don't try. Nor does there seem to be much sentiment in those states for removing the bans or lowering the barriers. So allowing one-time inmates to become full citizens will be a long-term campaign; it will not likely have much effect on the next few elections.

While a high black turnout will obviously help Obama, whether he becomes president will hinge on the decisions of white voters. (Most Hispanic-Americans list themselves as white or don't designate a race.) In all, 94.2 million white Americans took part in the 2004 presidential election, as compared to only 13.5 million blacks; and 58 percent of whites supported George W. Bush against just 41 percent for John Kerry. So the Obama campaign, even if helped by external events, will have to change a lot of white minds.

There are already danger signs. In three states, race will in effect be on the ballot. Colorado and Nebraska are giving their residents a chance to ban affirmative action. The measures in both states carry the title " civil rights initiative ," at the urging of the black political activist Ward Connerly, who succeeded in outlawing affirmative action in California and has inspired similar campaigns in other states. The signs are that both measures will pass with votes to spare. This is what happened in California (1996), Washington (1998), and Michigan (2006), which tend to be liberal states. The reason isn't hard to find. Putting affirmative action on a ballot encourages white majorities to identify themselves by their race. It's their rights they are voting to restore.

What is seldom openly said is that a lot of white Americans feel racially aggrieved. They were represented by Barbara Grutter and Jennifer Gratz, whose petitions to end affirmative action reached the Supreme Court in 2003. [5] Their claims were that places which would otherwise have been theirs at the University of Michigan were given to less qualified black applicants. Thus, they argued, they were rejected because they were white, and there was an official preference for other races. In separate decisions, the Court narrowly upheld the law school's affirmative action method, while striking down the undergraduate admissions procedure.

What is rarely mentioned is that neither Grutter nor Gratz were outstanding candidates. To put it crudely, they weren't high on the "white list." And a lot of whites see themselves in the same situation. They are the ones who don't get admission or promotions, and thus feel they bear the brunt of affirmative action. Nor are they wrong about this, as Obama observed in his Philadelphia speech. Moreover, such feelings about affirmative action appear to be nationwide, even in states where it hasn't been on the ballot. Obama's word "bitter" may describe a good many blue-collar and middle-income families whose children have been rejected by their state's university.

This explains why close to 65 percent of white voters in California, Washington, and Michigan supported the bans, and why similar proportions are expected to in Colorado and Nebraska this November. So a task of Obama's campaign is to ensure that this white cause—which is what it is—does not carry over to the presidential contest. While only fourteen electoral votes are at stake, they could make a difference. Two Democratic senators, Patty Murray of Washington and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, may have some useful advice. In 1998 and 2006, it was clear that many voters whose support they needed would also be supporting repeal of affirmative action. Yet Murray managed to win with 58 percent of the total, while Stabenow's margin was 56 percent. How they managed to keep separate their own election and the vote on affirmative action, for example, by emphasizing economic issues, could be instructive.

As I write, several polls give Obama about 47 percent and McCain about 45 percent, a decline of several points for Obama from the polls of May and July. The rest of the respondents say they are undecided. At the same time the state-by-state estimates by pollster.com show Obama leading in electoral votes, with 102 such votes a "toss-up." The numbers will probably have changed by the time you read this. Yet now and later, there's a chance that the real percentages will be the reverse of those I've cited. Some people who are telling pollsters they're for Obama could actually be lying.

Such behavior has been called the "Bradley Effect ," after Tom Bradley, a black mayor of Los Angeles who lost his bid to be California's governor back in 1982. While every poll showed him leading his white opponent, that isn't how the final tally turned out. Things haven't been far different in some other elections involving black candidates. In 1989, David Dinkins was eighteen points ahead in the polls for New York's mayoral election, but ended up winning by only a two-point edge. The same year, Douglas Wilder was projected to win Virginia's governorship by nine points, but squeaked in with one half of one percent of the popular vote. Nor are examples only from the past. In Michigan in 2006, the final polls forecast that the proposal to ban affirmative action would narrowly prevail by 51 percent. In fact, it handily passed with 58 percent. That's a Bradley gap of seven points, which isn't trivial.

Pollsters contend that respondents often change their minds at the last minute, or that conservatives are less willing to cooperate with surveys. Another twist is that more voters are mailing in absentee ballots, and it's not clear how those early decisions are reflected in the polls. Yet the Bradley gap persists after voters have actually cast their ballots. Just out of the booth, we hear them telling white exit pollers that they supported the black candidate, whereas returns from these precincts show far fewer such votes. Thus they lie to interviewers they don't know and will never see again. Barack Obama wants to think "white guilt [over treatment of blacks] has largely exhausted itself in America." [6] I'm less sure. Almost all people who reject black candidates say they have nonracial reasons for doing so. And many undoubtedly believe what they're saying. So I'm not persuaded that the Bradley gap won't emerge this year. The Obama campaign would do well to print signs to post prominently in all its offices: ALWAYS SUBTRACT SEVEN PERCENT!

Since 1968, the Democratic Party has not been able to muster a majority of white Americans. Al Gore fell twelve percentage points behind among white voters in 2000, and John Kerry had a seventeen-point gap four years later. It all started with Richard Nixon's strategy, which was initially aimed at the South. With the opening of electoral rolls to blacks, the then-dominant Democrats were becoming a biracial party, which disconcerted many whites. So Nixon invited them to join the Republicans, assuring them that they would not press to integrate their party. The formula continued to work when it moved north with the emergence of Reagan Democrats. By the 2000 GOP convention, there were only eighty-five black faces among the 2,022 Republican delegates. Some unknown proportion of white voters doesn't want to support a party to which black Americans are drawn—"any more," as Darryl Pinckney has noted, "than they would go on living on a street that got too integrated." [7]

I've been careful so far not to use the word "racism." The term itself has become an obstacle to understanding. Once white people hear it, they tend to freeze, and start listing reasons why it doesn't apply to them. After all, most Americans admire Oprah Winfrey, like Tiger Woods, and respect Colin Powell. Yet racism persists, albeit not publicly voiced, especially in the belief that one's own is a superior strain. Here, however, not many whites regard Barack Obama as their inferior; effete or arrogant perhaps, but they don't fault him on intellect. To some, indeed, he may seem too much the intellectual. Resentment of perceived black privilege is also involved, as we have seen with respect to affirmative action, and even fear of some kind of racial payback. Over half of a largely white sample told a Rasmussen poll that they feel Obama continues to share at least some of Reverend Jeremiah Wright's positions on America.

On underlying sentiments, surveys aren't much help. For example, in an ABC News /Washington Post poll in June, 20 percent of the whites who responded said a candidate's race would factor heavily in their vote, while 30 percent admitted to feelings of racial prejudice. If the Bradley Effect was at work, as many as one third of the voters may count race as important. (We know of whites who are for Obama because they'd like to have a black president, which is also a racial reason.) In July, 70 percent of whites told a New York Times/ CBS News poll that they felt the country "is ready to elect a black president." Of course; that's what people feel obliged to say today. Yet some might have followed it up with "but not Barack Obama." The surveys can't measure white apprehensions over having a black man at the head of their government.

Michael Tomasky has said that to win, Barack Obama "will need to build multiracial coalitions." What seems more needed, in my view, are two parallel campaigns: a quiet one to assure a maximum black turnout, and a more public one to make the most of the white backing the Obama-Biden ticket already has. His rallies, appearances, and advertisements would benefit from featuring white faces, and they should be accompanied by endorsements from white military veterans, union leaders, police chiefs, and firemen. His black supporters will know what is going on, and not take this as a rebuff.

I pose this question if you had the money to start your own business anywhere in the world and your own country is taxing the mess out of you what would you do? Most companies would leave the country because they can maximumize their profits and guess who loses out? Ask those people in Detroit. Middle class average is about 40K a year and if you make over 100k you will be trying for every tax write-off you can get. Either way we will have a problem. With all that said I do like Obama but I'm afraid of being taxed. It not fun working the first 5 months of the year for free, trust me.
