TV One & BET, Its Time For: "White in America"

Kudos to CNN for "Black in America 2".


You get an A for effort and a gold star for correcting the lameness of the first installment. I even peeped a commercial for the upcoming Latino in America. Aside from them trying to educate the masses and convince everyone to empathize with our neighbors lets give CNN a round of applause for giving Soledad O'Brien something to do. It doesn't hurt that her multi-racial background makes it more acceptable for her to tackle the issue of race. No one knows what she is. I'm sure she is going to ride this "... in America" thing until the wheels fall off or until Prez Obama is out of office and no one cares to talk about race anymore.


Sidenote: If you want to see an amazing documentary about Blacks in America watch ABC New's Out of Control: AIDS in Black America. I love it when Terry Moran leaves Jesse Jackson dumbfounded.


While I was flipping the channel to purposely avoid watching B.I.A. 2, something occurred to me. I wasn't interested in watching the series because I am black and I know what life is like for me. However, I would be inclined to watch a series on what it is to be "White in America."


Don't boo or hiss just yet.


Think about, Black people have way more preconceived notions about what white people go through in America than they have about us. For the most part Black people get categorized into three groups: ghetto, criminal, ignorant. How do we categorize White people? Honestly, most people of color don't give White people's home lives much thought other than thinking they are all secretly racist or clueless when it comes to our struggles.


While watching Tyler Perry give Soledad a tour of his ATL back lot and wondering if he was hiring, I came up with an idea. Why doesn't BET or TV One answer back and create a "White in America" series. I've already done the work and drafted a letter. Just copy and add your signature at the end and send off to their respective offices.

Dear (BET / TV One) Head Honcho,


After watching CNN's series "Black in America Parts 1 & 2" my initial thought was "Why didn't (BET / TV One) do this? They are black channels, catering to black people in America. This is something that should have been right up your ally." Well, I forgive you for dropping the ball and have come up with a suggestion that will help inform your core audience.


It's time that people of color understand what it's like to be White in America. I'm talking the full experience from white collar to rednecks and everything in between. I figure the program can be split into topics:


Angry White Men - Minority and women get all the breaks. At least that is how some white men feel. Where is the white man's affirmative action or diversity programs? They are losing their grip on the controls and aren't too happy about it. It can even feature some KKK and white supremacists.


Poor White Trash - Black people are to the projects like white people are to trailer parks. I want to see some Feed The Children type -ish. Show me that not only people of color are on public assistance.


Wiggers - Show our influence on the white youth of America. Loving our music, men (and occasionally women) and swag, what is life like for a white people who identify more with black culture? You can speak to Eminem, Michael Rapaport and Kendra Wilkinson about this.


The Drug Game - Black in America talked about D-boys, who got locked up for mainly weed and crack. Let's flip it and show how the Meth-boys get it fired up. I want to see some white dudes with bandannas covering 2/3 of their faces as they show off their fancy Meth labs and show off their array of BB guns and hunting rifles spread across their NASCAR bedspread with dollar bills strewn on top.


Religious Zealots - This calls for a trip to either the Bible Belt or Utah where the religious movement is administering a beating to liberal America.


The Republicans - Now that Sarah Palin is one of the 9.7% unemployed in America, you can follow her around as she tries to claw her way back into the graces of the Republican Party. Maybe she can speak on the goal of the Republican Party in the upcoming years.


Middle America - This is a large one to cover. I personally think any state that isn't on the coast of the U.S and below the Mason Dixon line is apart of Middle America. I truly don't know what Middle American look like, what they do for a living or what they believe in but I have my assumptions. I believe the Roseanne show gave me a good idea.


Overall, White in America should set out to answer the question "Do they really have it better than us?"


There you have it.

I'd vouch for a "White In America" series, mainly because a lot of other races have this preconceived notion about white people "having it made" which isn't always true.  The real truth is...the playing field has been so leveled that White Americans have to take it to the max everyday like anyone else.  I think there are, however, underlying benefits when your skin is white (which can often proved to be a door, easy street, or pathway to opportunity)...but in international cities like NY, LA, and even ATL...it's really based on what you know and of course, who you know.  

They probably won't do a White In America series, though...or they'd fight like hell to not let it happen.  Mainly because they want you to THINK that its still a "White Man's World."   And as long as people think that, it will be.  

That's why PROPER race relations is important to fabric of our society.  It's important to do shows like that on EVERY RACE so we can eliminate stereotypes, create better understandings and relations, and reveal hidden truths.

I absolutely agree with that statement because when I grew up in Queens NY, and if we would see a White male come around in a up to date car, while wearing a suit, we would automatically think he has money. Now that I'm down south, everytime we see a while mail in a wife beater or with no shirt on in dirty jeans we automatically think he's a "redneck."

Why is it that it's OK for us to have preconceived notions about white people, but the second that a white people thinks a Black male is a thug because he's sagging his pants and wearing baggy clothes, they're racist? Can't you see the double standard here?

Anyway, good idea; and who knows what BET and TV One have in store. They haven't really represented Black people well if you asked me. They just represent the entertainment side of Black folk.

i think they should do a show and explore the more non generic life a white person. Personally i grew up in newark NJ a city thats like 75% black, and I have grown up with white guys that dont fit in the typicall white dude mold. And i dont call them wiggers cuz they not they grew up in the same neighbor hoods and had alot of the same financial struggles.

We shouldnt be so closed minded to our fellow man it only creates bigger boundaries to tackle.

That paragraph is kind of harsh, but let me feel you in on something. The same way you claim they are supporting and funding the same music that is destroying them. True that!  I live in a pretty affluent area, I think most ppl don't know that some rich parents do cut-off their spoiled children.


Overall this is an outstanding idea, and if these networks want to make good quality television they need to hire Chloé A. Hilliard.  I'm tire of reality television that isn't real at all.

Mtv is filming the real world DC right now, and that shit far from real.

Again, completley offensive if a white person flipped this and said it. And if you truly beleive that, try going to Beverly Hills or any other high-income city and see how many white girls holla at you. I'm not saying that some white girls aren't down with the swirl (just like some black girls) but most white girls I know wouldn't date a black man. OK I'm the "Wigger", well not really... I don't buy black clothes, but listen to some hiphop. I grew up Rich, then poor, now upper middle class. I did the gang thing as a kid because I had to, or get beat up on the way to school... not a nerd, but school was 20% white (I was a minority, everybody look at me!!!).

You want to know what being white is like... it's BS, I tried to get a job with the police after high school - I go from being #2 after testing to #32 after race and sex extra credit. I try to get a job on a road crew, sorry there are 100 white guys applying, but we need a minority to meet quota... problem, no minorities or women applied...

But the truth is, it's not being white or black that's BS - its being poor and uneducated...

I work in IT now, and own a clothing company... that's how I got to this site, while researching urban clothing...

Stop worrying about your skin, start worrying about learning and doing... everyone has the same amount of time in a day - what do you do with yours? Watch TV? Hangout with Deadbeats? Chase Tail? How about learning something new, meeting someone new, doing something to help the world...

You want to know what being white is like... and I want to understand why black women talk so loud in public... maybe we can meet up and swap notes, and learn at the same time - I'm in the southside of chicago...

All one needs to do to explore "white in america" is turn on the tv and look around you.  There's a reason why they are considered the majority!  Everything in the country is based off white culture from religion to politics.  I think this idea proves a very valid point though.  None of us really know anything about each other.  We all need to talk and engage instead of watching a program on what its like to be white, black, or latino in america.

Exactly!!!  I'd suggest to everyone who dresses with sagging pants and baggy clothes to try on a suit or casual wear for a day, and see the difference it makes!!!!!  People will suddenly look at you like a civilized human being, rather than someone who just got out of jail or is about to commit an armed robbery!!!  I myself dress in baggy clothes sometimes, due to my upbringing on hip-hop!!!  It's just like if a white punk rocker is decked out in piercings and ripped jeans, he's going to be viewed as a meth-addict, pill-popper!!!  But if that same white guy dresses casual without the piercings, he now seems respectable!!!!  It's not really a racial issue, it's a personal issue!!!  What image do you want to portray????????//

If there was a "White America" show, I guarentee you would find that whites and blacks have way more in common than they have different. If your editorial on allhiphop.com was meant in jest, then it was in poor taste.

Further more, I don't enjoy programs that single out a specific demographic and show them as if they were a display at a museum. BIA is meant to educate but only segregates. The initial intentions of channels like BET ,TV One, or just general "black entertainment" were meant to give exposure and opportunity to those that were denied. But the unexpected side affect is that now those channels just lump programming with African Americans as programming only for African Americans. Being white, I watch movies and TV shows with African Americans not because I want to be black but because they are American shows, and I am an American. "Black music", "Black cinema", "Black fashion" is 100% American music, cinema, and fashion. Jazz and baseball are equally American. When the NBA Dream Team put on uniforms, Lebron James and Larry Bird both wore jerseys that said "USA" on them. What aggrevates me the most is when you go to a store that sells music and Rhianna is put into the R&B catagory while Britney Spears remains in the pop section. It's the same music, and I have seen black music artists say that Britney's music comes from black music (most American music does). Why was the song The Seed by the Roots considered R&B when it was a rock song? Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra both gave renditions of the same songs. Is one soul and the other isn't?

Yes, there are the stereotypes that you described out there. Those individuals ruin it for all of us. Yes, racism is still a major problem in our country. Trust me when I say I get into arguments wth ignorant white Republicans all the time. However, unifying and equally sharing culture while giving respect to its orgination is what must be done in order to advance and defeat racism.
