“You know what's my true love? THAT N***A S**T”

-Big Pun

The late Big Pun is a great artist that had one song that has bothered me for years. The song was simply titled “N***a S**t.”

I was just unsettling to me that a Puerto Rican rapper with such respect for the game would extol “n***a s**t” as his true love, especially with all that there is to like about Black people.

Then I thought about it and realized that…everybody seems to love that “n***a s**t.” How do I know this?

Just look at the headlines – “Young Jeezy Not Stabbed; 3 Others Were At Party With Ludacris, Estelle, JD.” Well, at a party with such a wealth of talent and actual wealth, why would three people be stabbed up in the V.I.P. section? If they are a V.I.P., why are they stabbing people?

That’s that “n***g s**t.”

We talk about how we hate it, but we secretly want to see some real good, juicy, ignorant “n***a s**t” to go down to give us all a reason to shake our heads side to side in utter shame. We need something to converse, right?

I do it to from time to time.

But, here is the problem.

That “n***a s**t” is fare too often synonymous with Hip-Hop music and culture. God bless the dead, but Dolla’s slaying – however tragic – was not because he was a rapper. It was over some “n***a s**t” as far as I can tell from the reports. AllHipHop.com and other media report on these incidents, but outsiders take these write-ups as a factual statement about the Hip-Hop Nation. (Like, Bill Clinton getting his d**k sucked in the White House wasn't deemed political s**t, was it?)

We, as a community, don’t help matters. There just doesn’t seem to be any expulsion policy in Hip-Hop (unless you snitch). But, foolishness seems to be rewarded. You can really come up off of “n***a s**t” these days. MC Hammer has a reality show that’s catching a bit of flack for not having enough drama. What they mean is “Hammer, we would like more ‘n***a s**t’ if you don’t mind.” Diddy’s “Making The Band” series gave us plenty “n***a s**t” and so have others like shows from Flavor Flav and Keyshia Cole. (No shots to Diddy, Keyshia or Flav. To the credit of Rev. Run, he’s made a franchise off showing some functional familial interactions.)

So-called “n***a s**t” is nothing exclusive to Black people and crude, uncouth behavior exists in all races color and creeds. It’s also not a wholly Hip-Hop phenomenon. We don’t have a name for boorish White people called “Honkie s**t” or complimentary insults for Asians called “ch**k s**t.” “I love mayonnaise sandwiches, yo! That’s that ‘Honkie s**t, son.” SMH.

Finally, this opinion pieces is no disrespect to Big Pun, because everybody loves that “n***as s**t.”

I just wish they loved Hip-Hop and Black people just the same.

(One love to Big Pun. Please don’t make it seem like there is anything but love for the late, great Christopher Rios. R.I.P. to Dolla.)

PS: Here is some really good “n***a s**t” I just saw in the rumors section:

The F**Ked up part is that the N***a S**t is killing hip hop like it's killing us.

There goes that word again...NIGGA!!

It will all depend on how you view the word, if you get offended by its use, then you won't find some 'nigga shit' funny.  Jeff Foxworthy does the same thing with 'you're a redneck' jokes.

If a black comedian did the redneck jokes, I'm sure some redneck on a redneck website would've posted a similar column.

RIP to the G.O.A.T. Christopher Rios aka Big (PUN) Punisher.

Personally, I ain't defined/hurt by words. Of course that word has negative history but it's 2009. There are still fucking Klan rallies, racist shit, etc. It's bigger than these rappers saying it. Unfortunately, I'M A NIGGA, HE'S A NIGGA, WOULDN'T U LIKE TO BE A NIGGA TOO?

I guess we're popular again, & it's cool to be down with us.

LIGHTEN UP.  ITS 2009 AIN'T THAT SERIOUS.  WE KNOW WHAT HE MEANT.  I WAS RAISED WITH P RICANS AND THEY GOT A LOT OF ISLAND RACIST PEOPLE.  IN FACT MY FATHER IN LAWS MOMS THEY USED TO CALL HER NEGRITA WHEN SHE WAS A KID.  Sorry for the caps.  Anyway they used it in a derogatory way.  Then a song came out talking mi negrita and negro and the word change. Now guys call they girl me negrita and when call their man mi negro.  See how words evolve and you take a negative and make it into a positive. Turn it into art and make it beautiful.  It means love and brother hood.  And they even seperated the love word NIGGA from NIGGER.  So don't do Pun or any other Pricans like that keep in its context.  Some people like that Nigga Shhhh.  Do you. you ain't hurting nobody.  Prescribing what those black girls did in that video as nigga is racist. Those white girls lock that one girl in a room and beat her until she turned blind in one eye. Ain't nobody call them niggers or niggas.  They were shocked they would do it.  Don't fall for the Okee doke.  Sometimes we tear down ourselves acribing to ourselves stereo types of all black people gotta like and do the same things.  Pun to me was P Rican to the heart.  But he ain't have nothing but love for black people period.  And Puerto Ricans went through alot from America from unknown forced abortions, sterilizations, land grabbing, and shipped from their country because America needed cheap labor and the list goes on you name it.  So in affect they got niggaed the same way blacks got niggaed. P RICAN FAM can call me nigga all day.  Cause we come from the same struggle.  Yes its racist Puerto Ricans. From you judging that video its racist blacks. So yo nigga and they nigga is the same.  My nigga and pun nigga is the same.  What's the difference.  Ya'll trying to look down on people cause they think that makes them more accepted.  Kinda like some uppity house negroes start thinking that just because black people do something bad oh white gone look down on them they try to low key diss black people by supposedly raising black people up.  I didn't think for 1 minute them girls action was nigga.  It was just girls fighting.  That's how white and no offense to white people at all but that kind of mentality is why Hutu's and Tutsi's can't get along. Why India still got the caste system.  Its house and field nigga mentality.  Pun like nigga shhhhhhhh.  He expalins what he like about it.  You don't like it you don't have to like it.  Cause niggas ain't all the same.  But don't go downing yo people and say cause 2 girls got into a fight that's nigga.  No nigga is said all day across America a lot more as a sign of love than hate.  And thats cause we made the word beautiful. When I hear what up my nigga.  I don't think of 2 dudes bout to fight.   What you preaching now is Hutu Tutsi house nigga trash.   MOST PEOPLE OF All colors that played that song ain't go out and did some nigga shhhhhhhhhhhh.  They was like nigga that new pun album is dope.  Get it back in context a little.

@ anybody who says PR's shouldnt use the word!

Man look, Im Puerto Rican and Ive never had a problem with the word "Nigga".  And im from Texas!!  All the Black people that i grew up with referred to me as their nigga!! Slavery was big in the South and for me to never have a problem with that says much! I know that the word has a strong and negative meaning back in the days, and to some, it still does! I think when people use it today (whether Black or Latino) , it is used in the sense that we are a minority!! The word is used now by any minority group who feels oppressed. I personally dont use the word as much as i used too. I just say partna, dogg, homeboy, etc etc!! I know that I am not Black (African American), and I am proud of my Latino culture. But the truth of the matter is that Puerto Ricans DO have an African background, heritage, root, whatever you want to call it!!  I love everybody and it just comes down to this: you respect me, im gonna respect you! Regardless of race, culture, nationality, sex etc etc.  This is just MY OPINION ON THE MATTER and hopefully you can respect that and where I'M coming from!! I didnt type this to start a big ass arguement or debate! And if somebody is upset, my bad, those werent my intentions! Im just keepin it 1000! Thats how i am. Im a real stand up dude!!
If you do your research, Puerto Ricans come from Indian (Taino), Spaniard and AFRICAN ancestry. When the Spaniards arrived to PR, they enslaved the natives that were there long before (the Tainos). Eventually they died because of the harsh conditions. This caused a problem because they depended on slavery as a means of manpower for the mines and construction of forts. Their solution was to import slaves from Africa and, as a consequence, the vast majority of the Africans who immigrated to Puerto Rico did so as a result of the slave trade from many different areas of the African continent. The Spanish decree of 1789 allowed the slaves to earn or buy their freedom, however this did little to help their situation. Many slaves eventually rebelled, most notably in an event known as the "Grito de Lares", and on March 22, 1873, slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico. Their contributions to music, art, language, and heritage has become the foundation of Puerto Rican culture.
Just go to wikipedia and look up BLACK HISTORY IN PUERTO RICO and read for yourself!! Youll be surprised what you learn!!

Unfortunately, the term "Ni**a Shit" is coined off the trails that one too many ni**as have paved. Some races love the limelight more than others, and with that comes the aftermath of they're actions, thats just the way it is.
I see Choppa in a infra red video with a bunch of guys talking that "Ni**a Shit", I see that video of that lady getting moshed in the beauty salon, and to me thats that "NS" again. When we stop acting like a bunch of "Ni**s, then maybe we'll start looking like productive members of society. i called a PR a mexican, he didn't do anything.
i called a Mexican a border jumper, he didn't even move.

That "nigga shit" might fly up on the east coast or what not, but if you look black and come off as being black...yet you want to say you're puerto rican...that shit don't fly down here in the dirty.  Especially with these racist white folks.  When they see you, they see a black person.  Point blank period.  They don't give a fuck about Puerto Rico.

When you don't look any different than blacks who don't speak spanish...that's where the problem lies...there's nothing wrong with brothas taking pride in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti, or whatever.  There just seems to be more of an issue with Ricans and Dominicans because you all have more European in your background and none of you (except Rosa Clemente) seem to embrace that African in you.  Yet ya'll use the word "nigga" more than we do.

I'm tellin' you, the that shit might fly up there, but you won't even feel comfortable enough with black folks to be using that word.  A lot of latin rappers get a pass if their music is decent, but we still don't be liking that shit.  Like, if everybody thought it would be cool to call each other spics...I guarantee that shit wouldn't fly in the Latin community.

And since so many latinos are darker skin, are they black latinos and the more mixed light skin latinos just...LATINOS???  I'm a baseball fan and a lot of the best players are LATINOS that look just like any other brother in America.  I didn't even know Ju Ju from the Beatnuts was Dominican until he said it.  I didn't know Tru Life was Rican until he said it.  Ya'll need to stop acting like ya'll ain't our brothers because you ARE muthafuckuz...

Like Black Nicholson said, "Cooning is at an all time high. This might be the wrong forum for this, but yo, let's keep it 100 percent. The word negro means "black thing." It's not even a person but refers to objects like a tool of some sort. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you say that a light-skinned person, no matter what their nationality is, has no idea what a person of darker color goes through. I ain't even the darkest brother, but I ain't got no light-skinnededed pass. Light-skin people of color can play nigg@ games all they want and when they want to stop being a nigg@, negrito or black thing, they can. This is not necessarily so with darker people whose dark skin will always be a stigma and a caution sign to the powers that be.

Look at Plies talking about being a Goon/Coon, same sh!t. Coon was short for Racoon whose eyes appeared to don a bandit's mask of sorts. My point is, it's easy for a light-skinned person to use words like nigg@ and Goon/Coon because in all accuracy such a description does not apply to them, but trust me a darker brother like Rick Ross or T-Pain (check me on this if you can) would have more internal conflict with using such a word, that hits a darker-skinned person harder than a lighter-skinned person who could shed the pain of being referred to something so denigrating, easier than most melanin rich peoples would. I'm not advocating darker over lighter, just examining how the term nigg@ from negro was applied to those who had no choice but to wear such shoes so to speak while those lighter who use the term can take it or leave it as a game that they play whenever you feel like it and when they do not want to be called nigg@ anymore all they have to do is let it be known. As soon as a darker skinned brother tries to be serious about something, because there's have more at stake, it will always be some lighter person to be like "Nigg@ please". Something's wrong there.

Peace AHH.

Oh yeah, and I do understand that the Dominican Republic is on the other side of Haiti. They share the island pretty much it seems, but still it would be wise to be sensitive to how people respond to the the negative stereotypical things we as people say. If black people with Dominican blood started calling themselves spic, there would be a lot of people upset. Who designated the black man to be the fall guy with everyone being able to call him nigg@ without back-lash, yet let the same black man say some harsh stereotypical word at any other nationality and it would be some problems.

Puerto Ricans I grew up with in the NW (Portland, Tacoma, Seattle), pledge allegiance to our regional Black community and still embrace their indigenous culture.

I'm cool with anybody who respect me, but I still keep my eye out for those who emulate my tribe but still be racist at the same time. I visit this website on a daily basis and i never comment on none of the articles but this one caught my eye. First thing i would like to say is that i love everyone no matter what color or race u are. This topic about the the use of the n word is very important me. i feel that nobody and i mean nobody should use the word NIGGER or NIGGA no matter what u do  YOU CANT CHANGE HISTORY IT IS WHAT IT IS. i feel that if you are non blk and you respect our culture SO MUCH from how we dress to the way we speak to our hair styles(waves or braids) then why would u use a word that was used to oppress a whole race of people regarless if u use it as a term of endearment. as a african american i very offended when i hear anybody use the word especially non blks because most of them hardly know anything about our culture only the cool things. if i were to call a hispanic or latino a SPIC they would be very upset but we as blk people make it ok for everybody else to use the n word. hey do me a favor if u reading this comment and u feel how i feel an your blk next time a person refers to u as a nigga and if he or she is hispanic call them a spic or if he is asian call him a chic and so on. Last thing i would like to say is that i saw a lot of hispanics making comment trying to give justification on y they use the n word. look at the end of the day we can both live in poverty and go through similar struggles but that doesnt mean SHIT because at the end of the day its all about RESPECT which show me that a lot of non blks dont have but yet they claim the LOVE BLACK CULTURE if your smart u would really think to yourself like man would i wnat a blk person calling me something deragatory and answer would be NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. SO LOOK PLEASE HAVE SOM RESPECT FOR MY PEOPLE AND MY CULTURE. AND FOR THE RECORD I WOULD NEVER BUT A BIG PUN ALBUM AND ITS NOT BECAUSE HE WASNT TALENTED. I JUST WASNT FEELING HIM LIKE THAT.

Honestly bro, ive never been called a spic!! Thats real talk!! I think when people see me and my demeanor, they can tell that i dont fuck around! Even if they get to know me, they know whats up!! Also, it dont bother me being called a wetback because that term is mainly used towards Mexicans. No disrespect but its the truth. I have a lot of Mexican friends. Especially here in Texas. The vast majority of Latinos are Mexicans! Shit, Texas was part of Mexico a long time ago. Dont get me wrong, there are other Latinos here (PRs, Dominicans, Cubans, Panamanians) but the majority are Mexicans.
I think what the problem is that the word "nigga" was adopted and accepted by the HIP HOP community (not America).  It was used so much in the late 80's and early 90's by rappers that the word basically became normal. ITS SAD but its true.  N.W.A. basically came out and said, "We calling OURSELVES niggas!" To the public, the word nigga was frowned upon and used to describe thieves, no good thugs, gangstas, pimps, drug dealers etc etc etc. Nigga was used to describe someone with no morals or values. Someone who is SUPPOSED to be ignorant! So NWA came and embraced it and was basically rapping about shit that they experienced in their lives. To them it was everyday shit but to white america it was out of the norm! Im not saying NWA were ignorant, but thats how they were perceived by non blacks. Their way of rebelling was by calling themselves "niggas" and saying "what you gonna do about it?"
I think what has unfortunately happened with the word "nigga" is that its been used and thrown around so much, that people thought it was "okay" and "cool" when in actuality its not. Its a racial epithet.  We all know that hip hop/rap has a great influence on America and its youth.
That is MY POINT OF VIEW on the word "nigga". Some of you might agree, some of you wont. Like ive said before, I personally have stop using the word as much!  And if a black person calls me "nigga" it doesnt phase me neither. Words dont have power unless you give them power.  Actions speak louder than words and as long as nobody puts they hands on me, Im good!!

On the real though, we inheritted all this hate from our subjugators. I don't know where we are going with all this, but just as for your fyi, the notion of Aryans or an Aryan race got twisted out of proportion and was really coming out of a body of intresting information. According to theosophists, Aryans were supposed to be the Fifth root race and after them comes another root race a sixth root race and that sixth root race is said to appear here on the North American continent as a mixture of all the previous races or something like that.

We are entering the age of light, the age of Aquarius, the Hopi fifth world and the Mayan 6th sun. This Mayan calendar runs out in 2012 and that is when we are supposed to officially be in the Aquarian age, the age of lesser mysteries. We'll be initiated into the lesser mysteries in order to learn the greater mysteries. Our chakras we'll be raised to the fifth chakra as the 6th Meruvian race that comes after the previous 5th Aryan race who were supposed to master raising their 4th chakra. Asd you see were are all in this world together and we will have to be more conscious if we are to be granted access to the higher levels of conscious that come from higher dimensions or higher vibrational densities.

When the Aryans arose, our planet had experienced a planetary shift signified by the great flood that knocked us from 4th dimension, the astral plan to 3rd dimension that we now now that is on it's way out if we raise our consciousness level to be as spiritual as our level of technology. We are a dimension behind currently because of our technology always surpassing our spirituality and we use our technology for destruction like with atomic and nuclear weaponry. We currently destined for 5th dimension but we are really supposed to have 6th dimension capacity by now, but all in due time.

We people of America and our lineage will be Meruvians since 2004, the new race combined from the white, the red the yellow and the black man. People we are entering a new age and we must let the hate of the old age go because we are not the same race or races that were before 1970, we are not as dark as we used to be and we are not as blonde as we used to be, so dig it, let's get with the future of Love why don't we. Happy Aquarian Age everybody. Have a happy safe and responsible weekend.

"The word never defines the people, the people define the word."
If that weren't the case all white people would be good and all black people would be bad, and we know that's not the case.  In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, we have kept the word nigga alive because it gives us motivation to be better.  It helps us remember where we once were and pushes us to reach higher, to prove to ourselves we are more than that word alone.  The sad part is, now the word is just used to promote ignorance so when it is said, you then appear ignorant.  I think we need to get back to when it motivated us, like "Nigga get yo shit right."  Nigga means being beaten down and rising up if you really think about it.  Black people are the oldest race and the dominant gene, therefore we are all niggas.

When the government acknowledges that slavery and the kidnapping of Africans from the mother continent is wrong, then it shouldn't be so hard for people that have come after the fact to realize that words like nigg@, that arose from the trafficking of kidnapped Africans by Spanish and Portuguese Imperialists, is wrong as well. Understand the educationality disparity between the descendants of kidnapped Africans and the descendants of other immigrants to America is so huge, it is not right.

Imagine if you were educated in your native Africa AND when you were kidnapped to America colonies you were not allowed to practice your native educated tongue AND when you couldn't speak English or Spanish or Portuguese you were disrespected out of the frustration of your captor's inability to understand your language so you were denigrated to being called a thing, a negro at that, a black thing.

Only education will solve these gaps of progress in our human evolution and until we can all reckon with the responsibilities to correct the situation, even those who were not kidnapped no matter what color they are, they will not evolve any further because only together will we reach the higher levels of consciousness. Together or not at all. You ever wonder how much they get paid on Star Trek for being apart of the crew, their pay is enlightenment from the experience of the journey. Peep the formal apology:

The U.S. Senate on Thursday apologized for slavery, making it the second body in Congress to approve such a measure. The vote comes a year after the U.S. House of Representatives apologized for slavery.

The unanimous vote by the upper chamber of Congress also came one day before many African Americans commemorate Juneteenth, the day when word finally reached slaves in Galveston, Texas that the Civil War and slavery had ended.

The resolution says that "the legacy of African-Americans is interwoven with the very fabric of the democracy and freedom of the United States" but recalls that "millions of Africans and their descendants were enslaved in the United States and the 13 American colonies from 1619 through 1865."

The resolution admits that Africans were "forced into slavery" where they were "brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized, and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their names and heritage." And it acknowledges that many enslaved families were "torn apart after family members were sold separately."
Although the resolution decries the "visceral racism against people of African descent" that became "enmeshed in the social fabric of the United States," the nonbinding measure does not authorize reparations for descendants of African American slaves.

"Nothing in this resolution authorizes or supports any claim against the United States or serves as a settlement of any claim against the United States," the resolution states.

The failure to permit reparations is all the more stunning considering the resolution specifically admits that descendants of African American slaves "saw the fleeting political, social, and economic gains they made during Reconstruction eviscerated by virulent racism, lynchings, disenfranchisement, Black Codes, and racial segregation laws that imposed a rigid system of officially sanctioned racial segregation in virtually all areas of life."

The Senate resolution even acknowledges that these Jim Crow laws "officially existed until the 1960s--a century after the official end of slavery in the United States." But still no reparations for those who suffered through Jim Crow until the 1960s.

Nor does the resolution provide compensation for those African Americans who "continue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow laws--long after both systems were formally abolished."

Slavery was abolished in the U.S. with the ratification of the 13th amendment to the Constitution in 1865. During the Civil War, President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery in states that were in rebellion against the federal government, but that order had little immediate effect on the vast majority of slaves, who were held in Confederate states at war with the U.S.

This is not the first time the federal government has stepped into the issue of slavery. In 2003, President George W. Bush made a trip to Goree Island, Senegal, a former slave port, where he described slavery as "one of the greatest crimes of history." The bill also notes that President Bill Clinton addressed "the deep-seated problems caused by the continuing legacy of racism against African-Americans that began with slavery, when he initiated a national dialogue about race."

"An apology for centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed and a formal apology to African-Americans will help bind the wounds of the Nation that are rooted in slavery and can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help the people of the United States understand the past and honor the history of all people of the United States," the resolution states.

Although the House passed a similar resolution apologizing for slavery in 2008, the new version of the Senate resolution will reportedly be sent to the House for its approval as well.

Six states (Virginia, Alabama, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina) have already apologized for slavery.

The use of the word nigg@ was meant to stimulate one to rise out of the despot position of a subservient one rather than to wallow in one's servitude and eminent demise. To be a nigg@ was to be suicidal because if you stayed in a nigg@'s position, it was understood that you had a deathwish or felt obligated to carry out the will of your captor.

In order to build the new world the negative ways and structuring of the old world must subside. That which is worth preserving must needs be preserved sort of like a time capsule or a Noah's ark.

peace my fellow human beings.

My feel is if you are not African American then you shouldn't use the word.  I am very clear about how it has evolved into a term of endearment but it is a word WE flipped into a word of endearment because of the oppression WE endured.  I know that PRs are African as well but they don't embrace that part and they know it.  NONE of the Latino community embrace it. Look at how they treat the Black Ecuadorians. They didn't start embracing it until hip hop. Our shit.

This is not about hatred.  And it's not about how talented Pun was/ was not. It's about MUCH respect and a little fucking compassion. Now. For all who need to know. N***A is a very painful, powerful and effective word.  Many lives, many deaths, many denials, many rapes, many robberies, many, many many injustices, in THIS country for being Black=negro=n***ers=n***as=us. I don't consider myself one in reference to what the rest of the world has stereotyed.  But in reference to the FACT that no matter how many degrees, cars , jewels, homes , etc.., when a black man walks into to room, even if it's a corporate conference room on Wall Street, all others in the room see a ni88a.  I'm not saying that they are racist. I'm saying that the sterotype is so imbedded into the psyche of our society that dark skinned people are just considered ni88as; they say african americans because its politically correct but they are thinking "ni88as" as they wonder just what type of ni88a you are.  a good ni88a or a bad ni88a, smart ni88a, dumb ni88a, etc...  Once again this is just what I've observed. My people have gone through a lot.  Many won't admit it but we didn't really start getting our respect until WE created hiphop(due to our American Struggles). Pardon my ignorance of world music, but I'm unaware of any people of color (particularly black) who created ANYTHING (particularly music) that has influenced the world the way hip hop has. Pardon me again but I don't think any music anywhere has done what hip hop has done. All started in the hoods, with the little, nobody, good for nothing, lazy, shiftless, thieving, lying, stealing, whoring, hustling, pimping, begging, fighting, stabbing, killing, baby-making, welfare "NIGGAS" of New York City. Wow.

I'm not advocating the word it is just a reality of the world.  People are struggling everywhere.  Someplaces worse than others.  It's just that We turned ours into music that made the world want to be down. and that's an understatement. I don't even want to talk about the money it generates.

The fact that a big deal is being made about these chiks fighting and calling it ni88a shit is silly because when I saw the white girls fighting I immediately thought "cracka shit".  Straight up. On this blog latinos are ready to kill if someone calls them spic but think it's OK to use the word N***a. Strange. But then again not really. Once again it's the power of hiphop.  Part of the reason the world love us so much (pardon me: our swag and style, and music) is because of our swag and ability to create slang, style and and all that other fly shit.  As was mentioned because there are host of words that could've been used to represent the struggle, PUN didn't have to use the most painful one.  Yes WE flipped it to be a way showing love but the word is many other things to those of us whose ancestors were kidnapped from our home forced into slavery, bought, sold, raped , beaten, sodomized, demoralized all in the soils of this country.  The very structures of our nation's capital were built by the free slave labor of my people.  The world's financial heartbeat stands on the graves of my people. Others cultures don't understand the pain all they know is the hihop hype.

I know many of my brothas and sistas use the word in a very casual manner and they even embrace other cultures with it.  But it isn't Ok for one reply with it or use it. EVER.

This editorial is just a cheap way at getting some attention; creating a disturbance online with some bullshit perspective for the sake of shock value. The simple fact that this writer actually posted this shows the lack of understanding he has on what it's like to live this "nigga shit."

"Nigga shit" is in the hood. Does "nigga" mean African-Americans? "Nigger" is the slur used against African-Amercians, but the true definition of the term doesn't entail being African-American. If I call you a dick, does it mean you're really a physical penis? No. It's slang that we use to describe inconsiderate & rude people. Calling an African-American man "Black" is as ridiculous, too. Black is a color. As dark as some cats are, I never seen someone with black skin - just really dark brown. I say that to say this: shut up, nigga. "Nigga Shit" is fire.

I'm Puerto Rican myself. I say "nigga" & do "nigga shit," but it's not because I'm trying to be "Black;" it's because of I came up in the hood, where "nigga shit" goes down; it's what I saw, learned, & did as a result. It's called being a product of your environment. You could be African-American & take offense to "Nigga Shit," but maybe, you just don't know about nigga shit. Maybe you're "Black," but being such doesn't mean you can relate to shit that goes on in the hood; you don't understand it, therefore you find a problem with it. You're looking at the face value of the record. The song is an ode to the things we do - that nigga shit - nothing more, nothing less.

I could bet BLACK Thought, Wyclef, & other "Black" rappers found the song to be relatable, not ignorant or offensive. Most people criticize out of jealousy. Maybe you're a Black guy, but a corky, corny, loser of a Black guy & you really wish you could relate to the song. You find that you can't relate, so you just find an aspect of the song to hate on. The best part of this article is my response to it. I should take your job, in all reality.

I bet you wouldn't check a Puerto Rican in the street for saying "nigga," though. You should try it. The ass-whoopin' you would receive could help you relate; you'd finally be a part of some "nigga shit."

Stop adding to the racial rifts we already suffer in this world. Try to get the point before you basically call Big Pun an irresponsible emcee for making "Nigga Shit." That's not Hip-Hop. This is AllHipHop.com, right? Oh ok - because this article is not Hip-Hop; it's a waste of 2 mins.

Aside from that, Big Pun is dead. To question the art you call him great for is hypocritical & foolish. You need to write a children's book or something. This Hip-Hop shit is clearly not your forte.

I love how the song has been bothering you for years, LOL. Better than than is how you said "That Nigga Shit ain't Hip-Hop." It isn't?! Have you heard a rap record before?! You probably can't wait for Drake's album, LOL - some REAL music for once, right? SMH.

You dont see white people reffering to baseball as "our sport". Before Jackie Robinson, it was just whites!! But you dont see white people talkin about "man, this is OUR sport. We started this shit! Basically, the word N***** is a historically racist word but we as black people have chosen to use it to in ways to greet each other. Actions are but based on intentions so if u INTEND to offend someone using that word it aint hard to tell and if u say it just in greeting among the minorities or even in some cases white people based on your surroundings, then take it as it is. It's just like calling someone stupid versus saying they got stupid money. Same word, different intention.

You mentioned that u were puerto rican now can u mention anything in your culture where u include aa's please enlighten me because  i would really like to know. As for you mentioning that whites dont go around saying that baseball is our sport might be true but in my experience i have heard  hispanics go around saying that baseball is OUR SPORT. i remember when i was in college and i was thinking about trying out for the baseball team and i  mentioned it to somebody who was hispanic and the look on their face was priceless kind of like  R U SERIOUS and i have had  conversations about baseball and a lot of them seem shocked to know that i had knowledge on the sport. But their reactions kill me because if they knew american history they would know blks were playing baseball WAYYYYYYYYYYY before they even step on a baseball diamond. Sometimes individuals dont need to use comments to show how they feel about certain things because a persons first reaction is usually their most honest one and action does speak louder than words.

Gabe254 what  point are you trying to make by making a list of rappers that are half hispanic ???? Come on now  lets be logical as well as realistic DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT THESE LIST OF RAPPERS  WILL EVER GET RESPECT FROM important aa's whether they be biracial or fully African american such as our president, al sharpton, jesse jackson, michelle obama, maya angelou, booker t washington, martin luther king jr malcolm X, corey booker, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tugman and the list can go on. All of these people i just named didn't have to refer to each other as a NIGGA do you really think that aa's who are important in my culture would have accomplished anything by refering to each other as a nigga as a matter of fact if it wasnt for some of these IMPORTANT AA'S you as well and i would not have any freedom and see thats the problem with non aa's especially hispanics they LUVVVVV so many aspects of our culture but dont really know shit about us but yet people in your culture want to refer to me as a NIGGA. People like you might have the up most respect for these rappers you made a list of  and i dont if its because one side of them are part of your culture but it really doesnt matter because my beef is just not with non aa's its with anybody who uses the n word. So look PLEASE STOP TRYING TO MAKE A JUSTIFICATION FOR PEOPLE USING THE N WORD ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN BECAUSE THE WORD WAS USED TO OPPRESS AA'S NOT HISPANICS. IF IM NOT MISTAKEN HISPANICS WERE NEVER CALLED NIGGER BACK IN THE DAY AA'S WERE AND IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY THEY ARE STILL REFERED THAT WAY. AND I KNOW THERE ARE HISPANICS WHO ARE AS DARK AS MYSELF BUT ITS STILL NO JUSTIFICATION BECAUSE A LOT OF THOSE BLK HISPANICS WERE NOT BORN IN AMERICA. WHICH IS WHY THERE ARE NOT AA THEY ARE HISPANIC THEY HAVE AFRICAN ANCESTORS BUT LETS BE REAL DO THEY REALLY CLAIM THEIR AFRICAN ANCESTORY ON DAILY BASIS.  Oh yeah and one more thing in my last comment i asked the person who had the screen name AHH 4:20 to name something in the PR culture that includes aa's and he never responded back and i know u read my last comment so can u please answer that for because i still waiting for answer ???????

If the word is so bad why the fuck would u say that it is a part of your culture. Its 2009, the word has nothing to do with color any more, but you love living in the past. The only color is green. When your in a poor neighborhood all that color shit is out the window because your all going through the same shit. Its funny how when someone else wears baggy jeans or "MJs" they're trying to be black but when a black person wears clothes that fit or a dressed up nicely they aren't considered trying to be white. How the fuck does a color of people have a right to ignorance? Your talking all intelligent and how your above others yet your making all these ignorant comments.

Man harlem16, you making this too personal. At first this was just a lil discussion amongst us expressing our thoughts and views but now you taking it too far. All this from a sorry ass Big Pun song!!  DROP THE SHIT!! IM NOT TRYING TO MAKE A JUSTIFICATION FOR ANYTHING!! I dont have the "upmost respect" for ANY rappers!!!
You said "Lets be real, do they really claim their african ancestry" in regards to black hispanics. YEA BRO, THEY DO..  I know and my Parents have known dark/black Puerto Ricans who get shitted on by the fair skinned or light skinned Puerto Ricans too. They get fucked with so much that all they claim is their African side. They dont even say theyre Puerto Rican here in the states. They just say they Latino! That could be anything BUT Puerto Rican. We have racism within ourselves too.
I didnt make that list to get a response! It wasnt even directed to you, dogg. i just made it to show that even though AA's feel disrespected and offended by Puerto Ricans, there are Puerto Ricans that love AA's enough to have children with them and live a normal life. And VICE VERSA!!  I know that I, Gabriel Aviles, am NOT a racist and never will be.  Im sorry if YOUR enviroment shows YOU different. I cant talk for you and I dont know you. If the Puerto Ricans in YOUR environment use the word "nigga", then ohh fucking well!! Thats their problem and their perogative in that environment but its not a problem for the rest of the Puerto Ricans in the world. I know Puerto Ricans who dont use the word and hate the shit just like you!  Not all Latinos dislike all AA's!!
Here are a couple of things in our culture that include AFRICAN cultures and influences. We have "Bomba" and "Plena". Those are the two most famous musical styles from Puerto Rico and are African. "Bomba" consist of dances (hip and hand movements) and use of traditional African drums. In Bomba shows, the typical apparel worn by the dancers is what slaves may have used in social gatherings.  'Plena" consists of hand drums and other African instruments used to produce beats and rhythm. It was originated in Loiza, an all black city in Puerto Rico.  These are just a couple of instances where African culture are and always will be included in Puerto Rico and its culture. Whether people like it or not!!  i dont know about NYC!! Maybe you havent been able to travel. Maybe youve been stuck in NY all your life and all you know and see is whats going on in YOUR city or borough. But its not like that EVERYWHERE bro!!
I know after you read this you gonna come back with some other shit and frankly i dont care!  Youre gonna find a way to manipulate what i said and turn it into something bigger and blown out of proportion!!! Like you did when i asked ILLSEED if he wouldve bought up the topic if the song was called "Spic Shit". You came in and started talking about marches and beatings back in the 30's and other shit that was happening before you and I were even born. Just save your breath and time!  Im gonna move on and not dwell on the past!!   The past cant be changed! It is what it is!!

**Sidenote**
I think that EVERYBODY in the world needs to move on and forget about the PAST. ALL races of color or ethnicity has faced racism and oppression of some sort since day one of its existence.  Racism continues to this day because it is always brought up. Its SAD and its Evil. But we as people must try and move on. Its not fair for ME to blame some random Spaniard guy because his race came to PR and made my people slaves centuries ago. Its not fair for an African American to blame some random Caucasian guy because his race made Africans into slaves centuries ago. All this happened before WE AS A PEOPLE TODAY, were even around.  Nobody in todays youth or generation was ever a slave! The people of today had no control or no part in what went on in the world centuries ago! We should learn from and be thankful for ALL our ancestors (regardless of race or color) for their sacrifices. The different races, different cultures and different ethnicities are and will always be around, but the INDIVIDUALS wont be.  Just think about it?  We wouldnt want OUR FUTURE civilization (50, 100, 200, 300 years from now) of people to suffer and go thru racism, based upon OUR actions of today!  Would it be fair for some Latino or African American kid in year 2587 to hate on a race because of some shit thats going on NOW? No it wouldnt be fair, because THEY werent around to experience the shit. Their race was but not that specific individual!!  Thats whats happening with us NOW in todays world. We are bitter and dislike certain cultures and backgrounds because of some shit that happened centuries ago!!  THIS RELATES TO ALL RACES, NOT JUST AFRICAN AMERICANS AND LATINOS!!! Peace and I love all of yall!!

It's nice to want to diffuse a volatile topic like this one, but down south, homey, there are slave quarters just mere miles away from the rest. How you gon' forget that unless you from up n'oth? Yeah forget about the past and flunk out of history. As a matter of fact don't pick up your check from last week, you needed that money last week, but that was in the PAST. ONLY African Americans can use that word because it was when falling from their lips that the horrendous meaning of it was diffused. Personally I don't like anybody to use that word with me. AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW, NOW YA KNOW...............YOU JUST GOTTA KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Either we learn from the past or we will be forced to repeat those mistakes in the future until we learn to properly remember. A part of growing is remembering. Remember that game from back in the day called Memory, where you flip over cards and try to match two, but you have to remember where you last saw a card's match? Some of y'all probably don't cause y'all are practicing forgetters. We can forgive and make peace, but it is an insult to the mind that God gave you to forget.
