The Beat Melee: Champ Meets Challenger

What up beat bangers?  Last week's competition scorched up like a tar roof in Texas.  The homies Denada and Underground Lab Productionz went head up for the vacant title.  In the final tally, Denada took the belt under some public scrutiny. Denada earns the title of "Casio Banger" for his first victory.

This week Denada returns to defend the crown with some new tracks against a formidable opponent.  All comments and critiques are welcome.  With those constructive ideas, all producers and beatmakers can grow and perfect the craft.  Remember the criteria producers.  Variety of tracks, arrangement, and originality are key.  Add some drops and changes to your beats.  A nice hook, a beat break, extra snare kick, or a change in melody can mean the ultimate difference in selection.

Without further ado, let the battle rage on.

Without getting into specifics like i did last beat battle.....

Challenger:

At first i was feeling JRB because of his sound choice but the more and more i listen to all of his music it doesnt seem like "music" anymore....Just seems like he was trying to place a bunch of sounds that "sound good" together, together......No musical structure/ or artistic expression whatsoever..

Anybody can sit at a keyboard/comp and go through sounds and pick out the best ones and bang on the keyboard with no knowledge and call it a hit....but to sit there and intelligently, artisticly know what your doing with "Music",  a real musician can tell what the deal is........
JRB im sorry...Wonderful sound/synth choice man, but all in all this sounds like someone who has no musical knowledge desparately trying to imitate a "sound".

Just because you have access to music creation tools doesnt mean your a musician...Just like everyone that talks cant necessary sing....

Champion:

Now D i remember you from last battle...and it seems like you have took heed to some of us "critics' out here and stepped up a little....You already know how i feel about the sampling thing..But unlike the challenger you DO know exactly how to sample and what your doing...Your not throwing the samples in there and calling it a beat..Its being done intelligently,artistically.... that i respect. This week you stepped up your game in all aspects...The only thing i would like to see from you is original work...I know you got talent man...Lets see it...Also get those mixes sounding right...Get those drums up a little louder.

At a first glance/listen I was going with JRB all the way..But instead of letting the amazing sound choice make my decision I listened a little closely and noticed the lack of authenticity/art/musical structure in his "sequencing". There are too many "non" musicans in music already taking shine from the true artist that should be out. Imitation and "being something you clearly are not" I dont respect. Specially when it comes to art.

Denada....2-0
(just try to get away from the sampling a little though man)

Why does everybody have something against sampling?  If you use a keyboard/synth YOU ARE using samples as well.  Those sounds that are already added into ur synth are sampled sounds fyi.

I gotta go with Denada again on this one.  The beats just have more soul and emotion going on in them.  Jrb has sum good pop kinda beats and the mixes are real nice....Just not my style of music though.

The only reason i voted for him was clearly because I feel as though there is nothing worse than a imposter...

Yes I voted for Denada...I refuse to vote for an imposter...Denada knows what he is doing...Even if it is for "4bars"

JRB

I got mad respect for dude as a music producer. as a rap producer tho??? i dont know bout that. The first track "murder everything moving" was the only hip hop/rap track out of the three. the other two were straight pop/techno. He has originality, but his beats lean more toward pop than rap

Denada

Again his Beats are better. but like i said last week he lacks originality. I love that Deadly Melody track. that shit is fire! but on the real, it sounds like a DJ Premier track.

Oh and this whole discusion on usin samples vs a midi controler. I mean, its all good to use either one. i dont knock a nigga that use samples at all. But i trip out when niggas that do use samples diss a nigga like me who dont use them. Its all in preference. When i first started I used samples, but then i stopped bcuz all the niggas that I knew that produced used samples and jus wanted to stand out from them. but i noticed a lot of them couldn't put together a real dope track when they didnt use samples. they weren't good composers. Im tryin to master both. right now i use a midi and will continue to  til i feel that i have perfect ma own unique style. then i'll go back to samplin'. But good music is good music.

JRB.... Murder everything moving is what I call a track... That song was the best out of your 3.  Your drums are great your sound is ready for Radio. I think if you shop your music you can make some real money doing what you do.

Denada, your sound quality is holding you back something awful, but your beats are dope as hell. I love all 3 of the songs. Your music lacks that crossover appeal, but it doesnt seem as if you care, and I like that about you.

Once again Im rolling with Denada.

Listened to both contestants. Wasn't really feeling the JRB dude. That "Murder everything moving" joint was your only decent beat, but too bland for my tastes overall. Good job on that joint though regardless.

Denada I have a bias towards sample based production, i'll admit that right now but wasn't really feeling your stuff that much either. I did like that "Deadly Melody" joint though. Sounded like some vintage Wu-Tang.

"So Slick" wasn't so bad either but way too repetitive and boring sounding after awhile. Denada you are the clear winner this week though. Great job.

you brothers gotta recognize the genre and formula of hip hop.

hip hop is made upon samples.

but they gotta song called "put ya hands together"

"the records is used from moms and pops collection.
find a break from a dope selection.
then go to the store and you buy one more
so my DJ can mix cause that's what his hands are for..."

each genre of music has a format.
hip hop music ain't country music.

country music ain't classical music.

classical music ain't heavy metal.

the genre of hip hop -- in it's purest form -- come from dope break selection and manipulation.

now, that's me talking right?

okay, leave me outta of it.
and go dig up the 3 best purest hip hop songs of all time.

go look at what people call the best and purest era of hip hop music.
simply pull 3 songs from then.

and tell me what the format of those tracks are.
hip hop production is clearly defined.

you not gonna change what hip hop is.
you can try tho.
but the shit wont work.

throw on some wack shit, then throw on wu-tang clan aint nuntin to fuck with or t.r.o.y or the world is yours by nas and pete rock and watch your reaction and the people's around you reaction.

simple.

listen to the best who ever did it from the greatest era.

not this wack shit on the radio for the last 13 years or the shit you see on myspace.

try to be the best.

denada wins again.

congratulations to both of yall for making the cut.

why pittin straight urban pop beats against hip hop shit?
the dude jrb is alright on the urban pop tip.
for real he alright.
he ain't that weird.

but the shit wasn't a hip hop jawn.

you should be battling hip hop head vs hip hop head.

for instance, if the tables was turned and this was a contest about who could get a pop radio hit on the radio with miley cyrus or usher or justin timberlake then jrbtheproducer got this.

but this hip hop music.

it make it seem like you tryna tell us anything made with a beat machine and or software is hip hop.

and that ain't the case man.

these was entirely two different producers.

it's like comparing a bollywood producer to a emo or grunge producer and then asking us to pick which one is hip hop?????

come on man.

yall tryna confuse people and dilute the definitions.
hip hop production is defined, man.

yall not gon trick us into thinking "well everything is hip hop".

no it's not.

denada, that was a ill scratch with greg nice and from the gangstarr dwyck jawn.

I like that JRB stuff.

Anybody playing keyboards and instruments knows

If you cannot play keys, you will never be good on
the keyboard.

Denada, I don't feel him. Anybody can pick a
sample, pitch a voice here and there.

but it takes a master like Preemo, Qtip or Pete Rock
to make it a whole.

Listen to tribe and you'll find many tracks that sound
better than the original sample. That's what's up
Mixing loops from any sample is not the Art.
Making them better than the original is.

Trust me BlackPeople 1, these beat dynasty dudes are bias and fraudulent when it comes to these beat melees (IMO). They pulled this same crap last year or the year before when they did these melee beat battles. They don't really represent this allhiphop producer battle contest that well.

I do tune in due to the fact that I'm also a fellow producer and like to see up and coming producers in action. You can always usually learn a thing or two from other producers. But a lot of the selected contestants beats be wack (More so then not) or the beats selected sound too poppy or more something else then hip-hop.

Thank to everyone for listening , I tried to take your criticism in mind when submitting this new batch, I hope it reflected in the music. I understand that some of this stuff sounds repetative to some, but I made them with an MC in mind, so please forgive the basic format. Alot of cats want me to change it up and maybe not sample as much, its all good, but thats what I do though, Im a sampled based producer, and I stay in my lane. If I tried to do what  JRB does it wouldnt sound as dope, knowing this, I stick to what I know and Love. Thanks again to everyone for the positive/ negative feedback........

It really pains me when people try to tell other people what hip-hop is... Hip-Hop in it's purest form is what the artist make it. Hip-Hop is a culture not just music.

Now if I was going with some of the logic that is posted this beat battle would simply consist of sampling. Some people even have references for their opinions (i.e. Eric B. And Rakim, Pete Rock)... But it is still just their opinion. What about Stetsasonic? What about the Beastie Boys? They didn't use samples every time they made a song. Afrika Bambaataa and Newcleus used heavy synth... And nobody on this thread or planet can tell me they are not hip-hop.

To all you self proclaim hip-hop heads attempting to school everybody on what hip-hop is... It's all hip-hop. Yeah, some of it sucks (maybe a lot of it sucks) but it is still hip-hop. It's like that crack head aunt... You may not admit that she is a family member but no matter what you say she is a family member. -capice-

With that said... Denanda, I have to say that your beats are better. You chopped up the samples nicely, It's not noisy, and it's very melodic. I can even hear Nas killing the "So Sick" track.

First dude was a mess of noise, I can see where he was tryna ride with it, but nah. As was mentioned, stacking cool sounds isn't enough to make a good song.
Second dude just sounded like some basic loop samples, with minimal additions. Though it sounded quite nice, it's elementary.

I'd have to go with the second dude though, I really found the first beatmerchant's wares to be quite messy.

it's like slowly but surely they tryna erode the definitions of hip hop.

like everything is music.
"it's all hip hop"
no the fuck it aint.

next thing you know somebody gon be playin some shit with bagpipes and a marchin band and they gonna try to say it's hip hop.

Also trust me... Sampling is very much Hip-Hop. If it wasn't for sampling we wouldn't have so many of the classic hip-hop albums and songs we so much cherish today, dating back from artists like Run DMC, Stetsonics, EPMD, BDP, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, NWA, Ice Cube, Mobb Deep, Dr Dre, Wu-tang, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, ATCQ, Eric B and Rakim. The list goes on and on..

Also it's good to be creative and different as well, just try to be original and bring a whole new perspective to the listeners with your music whether it be with sampling or composing your songs on a synth or with a live band. If you truly want to be a producer learn what a producer really is.

Someone who works with an artist (usually in a studio that charges you per hour) from beginning to end, selecting songs for said artist, picking the right tracks to use on the album for said artist, and also talking the said artist through the whole recording process. Telling the artist how to properly structure a song and how to deliver the song vocally etc...

A beatmaker is someone who just programs the beat and plays the melody on the keyboard and usually sells or leases the beat to an artist with no further involvement (There is a huge misconception when it comes to what a producer really is in hip-hop).

Also learn about music theory, song structures, tempos, key signatures and quantization (over time of course). Those are important things as well to raise up your skill level as a true producer.

If there was No Sampling Allowed, Even though I can't hear the Beats, this would be irrelevant.

Whats going on people?

Jrb, i have to say that murder everything moving was the best track. I could hear eminem spitting on that one. The other joints didnt really grab me much. But thats just keeping it real. Im not making comments to put anyone down. That joint was tight. But i have to say that in my opinion denada took this competition, not by much though.

I think its almost a draw, based on both of yall having one track out of the 3 that grabs me.

Denada, ima say that track, Herb Garden was the one that made me role with you on this competition. It brought me back to that underground 90s feel, like similar to the beatminez production. I could hear Buck shot on that one.

My advice to you is try to add more change ups in your tracks.

Also, i must say that i dont see anything wrong with sampling, as long as you can be versatile. Meaning you can be nice on playing some notes on the keyboard, and also finding the right samples and chopping them right, sequencing them correctly. But yall keep doing what you do. The learning process never really stops with production. Theres always something we all could improve on!

Anyone can feel free to comment on some of my tracks by visiting the link above. I also have more tracks at myspace.com/Mocredible
