TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE PRODUCERS: DJ Premier

By Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur
DJ Premier aka Preemo is the standard by which all Hip-Hop producers strive to be. The notion is absolute, like it or not. From his innovativeness to his uncompromising style to his tour of duty – Preem is it. He’s done it all from his professional debut in 1987 with Gangstarr to his modern work with Christina Aguilera and the innumerable acts in between.

Only a select few can match the repertoire that Preemo has cultivated over the last 20 years. But, this is an intro about those beat maestros that Premier loves and respects. Understand, Premier is no child so his influences and Top 5 is reflective of his background.

Without further delay, DJ Premier’s Top 5 Dead or Alive…

LARRY SMITH

“Larry Smith is a producer that used to work with Kurtis Blow, Run DMC with “Rock Box” and all that. He did a lot of the Whodini records. Very, very, very good producer.”

[Early in his Hip-Hop career, Smith crafted songs for Kurtis Blow and Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, rap’s early super stars. He later produced Run DMC’s first two albums, their self-titled debut (1984) and King of Rock (1985). Additionally, Smith wove a string of hits for Whodini, including their 1984 debut Escape with hits like “Friends.” – source AllHipHop.com]

“Jam Master Jay” – Run DMC (Produced by Larry Smith)

“Freaks Come Out At Night” – Whodini (Produced by Larry Smith)

MARLEY MARL

“Marley Marl is my idol of Hip-Hop. He’s like the James Brown of Hip-Hop.”

“At Your Own Risk” – King Tee (Produced & remixed by Marley Marl)

QUINCY JONES

“Quincy Jones is a no-brainer too. He did movie soundtracks back in the 50’s and 60’s when he was a young cat and all the way up until he produced “Thriller” for Michael and all that. He broke the code of music theory and created his own lane on how to count and start on the “2” and not always on the “1.” You gotta watch him to know when to change up, because he’s so unorthodox with his production and his talent as an artist.”

“Summer In The City” - Quincy Jones (Sampled by Pharcyde and Black Moon)

“If I Ever Lose This Heaven” – Quincy Jones (featuring Minnie Ripperton) and “I’m Gonna Miss You In The Morning (featuring Luther Vandross and Pattie Austin)

JAMES BROWN

“James Brown is just super ill.”

James Brown Master Mix With Various Samples

“The Boss” – James Brown (sampled by Nas and Ice-T)

RICK RUBIN

“Rick Rubin is a major, major reason – no disrespect to Russell, because we know Russell’s that dude… Rick Rubin did a lot of them beats that transcended…hard reality of production. And to be a founder of Def Jam Records when it was Def Jam…before it got soft and watered down. Signing groups like Public Enemy and the Junk Yardband. Showing that they can sign a Go Go act. All the way to all the old Beastie Boy records when they used to have the purple label. When MCA and Berzootie and Jimmy Spicer. Even with Russell and Jazzy Jay with the record Def Jam. LL Cool to be the first official artist that they signed with “I Need A Beat.” T La Rock “Its Yours” on the Party Time label which is really the official first Def Jam record ever. That’s how far back it goes so shout out to Rick Rubin too.”

“Give It Away” - Red Hot Chilli Peppers (produced by Rick Rubin)

Rock The Bells” – LL Cool J (produced by Rick Rubin)

Preemo Bonus – GEORGE CLINTON

“On some real s**t, I gotta make it six. George Clinton, Parliament Funkadelic, Booty’s Rubberband, Eddie Hazel, Parlet, the Brides of Funkenstein. He [George Clinton] was James Brown spaced-out – on some other s**t. James Brown was spaced out anyway, but George Clinton living is just the epitome of funk and all that other s**t.“

“Paint The White House Black” George Clinton – featuring Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Flavor Flav, Yo-Yo, MC Breed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kam and others

“One Nation under a Groove” - George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic (1978)

Interesting list. Can't be mad at that list. Larry Smith also did some BDP beats.

George Clinton is who Dr.Dre got his inspiration from. He is a genius.

Everybody forgets about Rick Rubin's impact in the 80's.

Shout out to Premo, one of my top five.

Props to George Clinton too he's Genius.
Quincy Jones goes without saying - that
name is synonymous w/ real Production.

.........I can't front, all that "give it away,
give it away, give it away now" shit was
gangsta too, lol. Marley Marl deserves a
mention just for 'Ain't no half Steppin' &
'Young, Gifted and Black' alone.

I can't necessarily say that I agree with all his picks...I think Larry Smith and Rick Rubin are somewhat the same and reiterats the point he was trying to make.  But his picks are definitely a testament to his own talent because each of them are very talented and are in a lane of their own.  Just like Premo is.

Premo is definitely one of the GOATs of hip hop production, if not THE GOAT.

Then everyone should just stop rappin too! Because they're 'sampling' each other stories! There is nothing NEW under the sun. Its a repetitive cycle. Premier took bits and pieces to create his own collage. I hope none of these new producers are considered 'original'. All of the music sounds the same; just listen to the radio. I admire cats who are different and dont stick to the status quo.

SAMPLING HAS A PLACE IN HIP HOP; TRUE... I APPRECIATE WHEN A PERSON CAN TAKE A SAMPLE AND YOU NOT EVEN KNOW WHERE IT CAME FROM..BUT MY POINT IS IF YOU ARE TWISTING IT SO MUCH THEN WHY ARE YOU EVEN SAMPLING IT... IF THE ORIGINAL ARTIST CREATED THE MUSIC, WHY CAN'T YOU.. RAPPERS GENERATE THOUGHTS FROM THEIR HEAD, THAT IS NONTHING LIKE SAMPLING WORK THAT'S ALREADY BEEN PRODUCED... IF THAT'S THE CASE I SHOULD TAKE A JAY VERSE AND THROW A COUPLE WORDS HERE AND THERE AND CHANGE THE PRONUNCIATION AND THERE YOU GO I HAVE SAMPLED HIM...WHAT'S THE POINT...PREME IS DOPE BUT COMPARED TO PEOPLE LIKE JAMES BROWN..IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH MENTIONING...THERE IS NEW STUFF UNDER THE SUN, MY LIFE EXPERINCES ARE SIMILAR TO YOURS BUT THEY ARE ALSO DIFFERENT..CATS ARE TOO LAZY NOWADAYS...BOTTOM LINE IS PREME IS DOPE BUT I APPRECIATE PEOPLE WHO CAN CREATE ORIGINAL MUSIC MOORE AND YOU SHOULD TOO.. THEY POSSESS MORE TALENT...

I agree. I prefer creative cats too. But alot of dudes are too lazy to be creative. I was listening to some of Preemo's early Gangstarr stuff; alot of the samples he was using are now well known within the hip hop community. But at that time, we were like 'WOW'. If you've listened to any of his newer material, his samples are more difficult to recognize. BTW, I like the message in your song 'Tell me why'. Good shit.

I would expect nothing less from the man , he came outside the box with it , but he came correct

He came from the perspective that if the East didn't sample James Brown so much back in the day they wouldn't have that signature sound
[ a sound they seem to have abandoned if you listen to mainstream hip hop today ]

Ha came from the perspective that if the West didn't come at it from the George Clinton P Funk , Psycodelic , More Bounce To The Ounce angle with groups like Digital Underground
[ although EPMD CAME WITH IT FIRST ]
They too wouldn't have had that signature sound that put them on the map

==================================================
YOU MUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW OR WHY HIP HOP WAS CREATED!!
YOU SOUND LIKE SOMEONE THAT JUST PURCHASED REASONS AND STARTED PRODUCING,  BEFORE THERE WERE COMPUTER  PROGRAMS HIP HOP WAS A MUSIC THAT THE PEOPLE CREATED BY USING WHAT THEY ALREADY HAD. AND THAT WAS RECORDS!!   EVERYONE NOW THINKS BECAUSE THEY USE REASONS THEY ARE STARTING FROM SCRATCH.  I HATE TO BREAK THE BAD NEWS TO YOU THE SOUNDS IN REASONS ARE PRE PROGRAMED .AND EVEN THE SOUNDS IN REASONS WERE SAMPLED FROM RECORDS.  REASONS JUST DID THE JOB YOU SHOULD HAVE TOOK THE TIME TO DO YOURSELF!!

THE ARGUMENT BETWEEN SAMPLING AND NOT TO SAMPLE IS MUTE, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE MACHINE YOU USE IT'S THE MIND BEHIND THE MACHINE.AND JUST LIKE TRE03 SAID, THAT IS THE REASON EVERYTHING SOUNDS A LIKE TODAY.  EVERYONE IS USING THE SAME PRE PROGRAMMED SOUNDS IN REASONS.  SAMPLING FORCES YOU TO LISTEN TO OTHER MUSIC, LIKE JAZZ ROCK&ROLL,BLUES AND ETC
SO YES PREMO IS ONE OF THE GREATEST, BECAUSE HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST TO CREATE SOMETHING FROM WHAT HE ALREADY HAD... NOW THATS HIP HOP!!!

Alot of up-and-coming producers dont have the means to get a Roland, Triton, or Yamaha keyboard. Therefore, they're forced to use what they have available. All I had was Fuityloops, but I made whatever was in my mind or just feeling at the moment. No disrepect, but I cant tell the difference between a Play and Skillz, Cool N Dre, or a Dream beat!

GREAT POINT ON HOW HIP HOP STARTED AND USING RECORDS YOU ALREADY HAD TO EXTEND THEM TO INSTRUMENTALS..BUT IT'S 09 AND I THINK MAYBE THAT'S WHY HIP HOP DOES SOUND ALIKE BECAUSE OF A LACK OF CREATIVITY..PEOPLE NEED TO STOP RELYING ON OTHERS AND LEAD THE WAY...I DON'T PRODUCE EITHER AND I UNDERSTAND HOW REASON WORKS...

Preemo doesn't have to explain his list at all because hell its Preemo.

I say a comment the other day that some dude who was making comparisons to Preemo & Dr. Dre and no disrespect to Dr. Dre at all because the man is so damn gifted & talented but real talk people, even though Preemo hasn't signed an Eminem nor has the bucks that Dre has, magnitude of respect that everyone has in the game for Preemo is sickening! Not to many people know that he's done work outside of hip hop to transcend his game to another level like (and i can't believe i'm mentioning them) Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguerla (screw it if i spelt it wrong) but just to name a few that this man has helped.

"PHARELL, JAZZE PHAE, TIMBALAND, SCOTT STORCH AND TARIK CRANKE"

Fact, timbaland has sampled from quite a few different people, one song I can think of that has a sample that he got sued for and lost was big pimpin.

Also anyone who uses Korg, Yamaha,Roland or any of these computer based programs use samples.

All the sounds that are in these keyboards are all sampled from the real instruments.True it's not the same as a 1 or 2 bar loop taken from a record, but still its a sample & all these guys you named use these products.

I feel you 1000% where you tryin to come from, I really do...
Problem is when you have no knowledge about something and you try to out think it...you sound very nieve...especially when talkin about something like hip hop that was created WITHOUT boundaries or true instruments! Hip hop was INVENTED in NYC in the 70's by niggas with NOTHING.
Its genius to make a complete instrumental out of 2 records when your in the middle of the PJs dead broke....70's broke not 2009 broke... AND your not "trained" to be a DJ or mix, that didnt exist like kids got nowadays...
My thing is who are you to come out of nowhere in 2009 questioning ANY legend ? are you kidding me man? like...who you supposed to be...
That youtube clip you got up there is sampling the "why cant we live together" joint...like completely... get the fuck outta here man...
tim thomas I believe....c'mon LOL....
the "poser" joint sounds like you sampled willie hutch "mama" or something...yup... it is...and you talkin about you wanted to be a skater hangin with white boys??? oooohhh...ok....I understand now...completely...while hip hop was going on you wasnt involved...gotcha....might be wise to just play the back with open ears instead of criticizing ANYBODY on ANYTHING hip hop when your not even apart of the culture, especially preemo....
And tell whoeve makes your beats to step it up ASAP, or be prepared to pay HEAVY on them samples....LOL....ah boy....

This is one of the best lists I've seen so far and the remark by RMoney that everybody on the list is garbage except Rubin is hands down the funniest and most ignorant comment on here.

Quincy Jones has over 50 years of experience in the entertainment industry, you clearly know nothing about music if you think a man who holds the record for the most Grammy nominations at 79, is a musician, composer, director, producer, bandleader and the first black man to ever be nominated for an Academy Award is garbage you are completely lost and you should be embarrassed to even participate in a conversation about music because you're ill-equipped. Quincy Jones is a producer's producer, a director's director and a composer's composer. You can't say that about anybody alive in hip hop today, nobody that even comes close to what Q has done and he's still working. James Brown and George Clinton are also garbage? Dr. Dre and the west coast funk as we know it doesn't exist without George Clinton and the Parliament sound, you can't possibly be this stupid. James Brown is the most sampled artist in all of hip hop but somehow he's garbage? You're just a fool who knows nothing about the history of music.

Cosign Illseed, Larry Smith and Rick Rubin were different kinds of producers and didn't have a similar sound at all.

how many melodies did these clowns compose? most of those tracks were polished drum breaks, but yeah, they were awesome...and then sampling tracks, now thats talent right there, hearing a hot sound and putting drums behind it, whew! nas's beats always have and always will be awful, if he put out an acapella cd, i would actually purchase it...x that, i would dl it cuz i bought God's Son so he owes me one...9th Wonder? you have got to be shitting me...that guy cant put anything but drums behind samples, he cant even play his own bassline behind a sample...and his shit always sounds unmastered and awful

My Top 5
1. Dr. Dre
2. Timbaland
.
.
.
Nobody really compares to those two...yeah timbo samples, but he has proven himself without sampling so its cool...with dre i dont wanna hear that g-funk george clinton shit...george clinton is ridiculous, and dre basically stole his sound at the start, but those early dre beats are my least favorite of his...still better than preeeeeeeeeeeemo tho...

its hard to name people after that...mainly because everybody im gonna mention still has 20 years to catch up to dre and almost as many to catch up to tim...

Just Blaze WILL BE known as one of the greatest of all time...and i know he heavily samples but lately he's been doing his thing without, plus he has years to get more under his belt...he has THE sickest drums of anybody ever...i dont mean in thumping sound quality, i mean he puts drums on a track that ?uestlove can go and actually play out behind the track, REAL drums, and his drum patterns are great...

RZA...a lil before my time, but WAY ahead of his time...and he is STILL putting out sick shit

Havoc...his beats are what u want if you are goin for that grimey, gutter sound...i have yet to think 'man that beat was wack' when i heard a Havoc beat

Pete Rock...A lil before my time also, but he is probably the best sampler...and he actually flips his shit instead of just looping (cough kanye)

whats that, 6? since i am only claiming two of my top five spots i will add a couple more to this...

The Neptunes...nevermind, just chad the chink...that dude is fucking ILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL i dont care that i havent really heard his shit since he left pharrell cuz pharrell was gettin all the shine...skateboard p - garbage, chad - sick

Dj Toomp...just listen man...enough said.

um lets see...one more...imma reach on this one

Rockwilder - all his shit is sick, straight up, head bangers, barely any samples...dude is ill

oh one more...

Dylan from making the band.

i love drums, i just dont think u can call someone that lays down drum patterns as the basis of his beats one of the best hip hop producers of all time...if that were the case travis barker would be the greatest hip hop producer of all time

oh yeah, and Rick Ruben's fuckin hippy on another planet ass.

people are missing the point. several true hip hoppers elaborated. hip hop started with two turn tables and a mic. premo is the best at that.he obviously gave credit to his inspiration. yeah we all know dre is dope. timbo is a beast. but when it comes to producin' in the traditional hip hop form preemo is that guy. we all know he respecs folks that are in the game today. dre, timbo, rock etc. but he took it to the essence. thats why hip hop is dead in many folks minds. no one is taking it to the essence. like my man teknison said. it started from nothing. two turntables and a mic. preme has mastered that. Im waiting for some of these busters to even imitate that. cause hip hop aint where it should be. there is a big difference from taking an instrumental like puff might do. and flipping a sample. Marley marl showed you that. do yall lisen to music or just skim through it? real recognize real. I bet you James Brown respects preme, I bet you Quincy respects Rza. remember he was in the triumph video. Yall who say preme or rza is before your time. log off. Not because you aint hip hop. but because you dont know your history. Premo is history pay homage. you little bustahs.

@ MONOLITHICPAW, exactly for me its a respect thing. Preemo's list is a reflection of his influences and proof of how wide his musical tastes are and clearly that just makes some people uncomfortable because they can't fathom why Quincy Jones is there and not Dr. Dre or James Brown instead of himself. The real truth is a guy like Quincy is in another stratosphere in terms of where he has taken his music and he's laid out a pattern that producers like the Rza and Pete Rock are following in terms of composing film scores and producing other genres like Preemo. As far as mutual respect among each other as producers the proof speaks for itself, Rza and George Clinton have worked together, in '65 Quincy did a jazz cover of one of James Brown's biggest hits Papa's Got a Brand New Bag so the respect is there. It's just unfortunate that same level of respect and historical acknowledgment is so easily ignored today.

RMoney your a funny guy
....you like who you like, great...your list aint nothing special though...and everybody on your list would disagree with your sampling theory handsdown....
You put Dre up there like he don't sample then you said "those early dre beats are my least favorite of his"...huh?
You mean to tell me dre is 1 of your favorites but you dont like the classic shit that made him who he is today?
You dont like Dre day? always into something? straight outta comton? nothing but a G thang? pump pump? murder was the case? but dre is your #1?
I really hate new age niggas like you man, sorry yo...
You only exist on the internet and your waaaay too opinionated for your own good...
You hate everything and you write stupid shit just to get niggas talkin, then when you got everybodys attention you write idiot shit in response...
you pretty much picked a handful of obvious niggas and then complained about random shit...
You wanna talk about DJ premiere Just peep Gang starr "take it personal" or "royalty" and ask me again who dont make their own melodies....or you wanna see his diversity...peep "doobie ashtray" by devin the dude or the christina agulara joint he did...
You probably didnt even know that all those "generic" sounding preemo beats that you hate him for are his cheap beats, meaning the lowest costing joints...cheapest preemo beat was between 8-10 G's back then...
I mean you wanna talk about Dre...LOL...you do know that he dont play all his shit right? ever heard of Mel man? Denaun Porter? focus? all Dre understudies and magic little helpers...
Half of Dres melodies are samples replayed..and sometimes by the original artist he sampled not him....
Dre gets props for his ear, his equiptment (he recorded in dolby surround sound 1st) as well as being the 1st to do what he did...
But you do know that Dre still studied cats like Q Tip...Extra P...premo...Dilla...ALL sample based PRODUCERS...you do know that right? lol...
Wanna talk Timbaland a devoted ASR 10 user to this day...even he takes it back to the essence when making beats by beatboxing...then sampling it...he still samples even if its a babys voice or a rain drop...hes sampling...your just gonna have to fuckin deal with it...ANY producer loading sounds is using some .wav file that is a sample from some record 9 outta 10....
You new age guys need to yank your head out your ass with this sampling shit always fuckin cryin, your like decades late...for every cat who loves true school hip hop and everything about it you got a new guy who wants to discredit niggas and talk shit ...always tryin to put one of your new guys against proven vets...
none of that trendy shit is designed to last anyway when will yall newbies realize this...shit comes & go's...year in & year out...
what would the neptunes be without the 80's synth sound anyway? damn near every pharell melody is a play off some 80s funk shit or michael jackson....
Rockwilder? lol...you'd have to put eric sermon before him...And I'd go with DJ Scratch or alchemist if your gonna just "reach" like that....
Justblaze? lol....that guys sounds like EVERYBODY ELSE right now...u serious? yeah his drums is straight BUT...he digs for his drums with MADLIB and even gets some of his shit from the nigga!!! lol...
Travis barker? the white cat? look man..before you talk any white boys on any level you gotta talk THE BEASTIE BOYS 1st...and when you talk beastie boys your talkin RICK RUBEN production!
"paul revere" would shut down whatever point your tryin to make about this travis barker guy..."brass monkey", "so whutcha want"...maaan please...he couldnt fuck with it...live drums or sampled...
White boys wouldnt know how to fit in to hip hop if werent for the beastie boys...
Man I could go on and on all night...this guy just had me buggin though...

oh yeah, half of dre's shit is replayed samples, you are right *sarcasm* idiot...check his production credits...and dre's early beats are basically premier beats, except he put a melody on top...premier is trash, he is like a drummer, but he cant play drums...no talent...

you are an idiot if you think most of dre's shit is sampled...he produced all but one of em's new cd...and i believe he interpolated (you probably dont know what that means) 3...so what, 3 outta 15 or so is sampling most his melodies right? mel man, no never heard of him, scott storch, never heard of him, mike elizondo, never heard of him, kon artist, never heard of him, hi tek, never heard of him...

PREMIER IS TRASH

wow u showed me by saying those guys sample...really way to go, since i didnt say that timbo samples all the time...

premier basically steals drums, and then puts it out as his beat, sample drum breaks and make drum based beats, wow he's good...

www.reverbnation.com/sevenproductions

travis barker, u missed the point on that, i said he's the best producer ever because he is the best drummer i know of...and since dj premier is a pretend drummer and is 'the best', why wouldnt the best REAL drummer be the best hip hop producer...

i have no problem with sampling, i have a problem with garbage beats, aka all of premiers, and all of his list...those are drumbreaks, but they passed them off as beats...trrrraaaaaash

pharrell is wack, said that...

thanks for reading my entire post and hanging on every word...keep thinking that premier is good...then go listen to the shit he 'sampled' aka stole...that motherfucker is trash...ever since hip hop started actually caring about having a melody to their shit, he disappeared

dre is the best ever

premier wouldnt make my top 15

but to nas dickriders - awesome

seriously go listen to what he sampled, then say its talent, 9th wonder is better than that clown premier

DJ Premeir, the hip-hop producer that ever did it, regardless of sales, spins, labels and all the other variables you want to throw in there. I have absolutely no problem with his list. Let's remember, this dude just turned 43, I believe, so he has been around longer than Hip-Hop itself. His foundation and upbringing was based on REAL music. Anybody frontin' on Quincy Jones, George Clinton and especially James Brown either are too young to know better, too ignorant to know better, don't know shit about music or all three. It's crazy that Rick Rubin's didn't start ringin' bells with this generation until 99 Problems.  Dude beeen a problem. And Larry Smith gave you one of the gulliest Hip-Hop joints of all-time (Run-DMC's Rock Box) and one of the smoothest (Whodini's Friends).  Basically, Preme knows what time it is.
